Abstract:For a NIP theory $T$, a sufficiently saturated model $\mathfrak{C}$ of $T$, and an invariant (over some small subset of $\mathfrak{C}$) global type $p$, we prove that there exists a finest relatively type-definable over a small set of parameters from $\mathfrak{C}$ equivalence relation on the set of realizations of $p$ which has stable quotient. This is a counterpart for equivalence relations of the main result of the paper "On maximal stable quotients of definable groups in NIP theories" by M. Haskel and A. Pillay which shows the existence of maximal stable quotients of type-definable groups in NIP theories. Our proof adapts the ideas of the proof of this result, working with relatively type-definable subsets of the group of automorphisms of the monster model as defined in the paper "On first order amenability" by E. Hrushovski, K. Krupinski, and A. Pillay.

Abstract:We study the structure of infinite discrete sets D definable in expansions of ordered Abelian groups whose theories are strong and definably complete, with particular emphasis on the set D' comprised of differences between successive elements. In particular, if the burden of the structure is at most n, then the result of applying the operation taking D to D' n times must be a finite set (Theorem 1.1). In the case when the structure is densely ordered and has burden 2, we show that any definable unary discrete set must be definable in some elementary extension of the structure (R; <, +, Z) (Theorem 1.3).

Abstract:I study definable sets in affine continuous logic. Let $T$ be an affine theory. After giving some general results, it is proved that if $T$ has a first order model, its extremal theory is a complete first order theory and first order definable sets are affinely definable. In this case, the type spaces of $T$ are Bauer simplices and they coincide with the sets of Keisler measures of the extremal theory. In contrast, if $T$ has a compact model, definable sets are exactly the end-sets of definable predicates. As an example, it is proved in the theory of probability algebras that one dimensional definable sets are exactly the intervals $[a,b]$.

Abstract:We study the definable topological dynamics (G(M),SG(M)) of a definable group acting on its type space, where M is either an o-minimal structure or a p-adically closed field, and G a definably amenable group. We focus on the problem raised in [13] of whether weakly generic types coincide with almost periodic types, showing that the answer is positive when G has boundedly many global weakly generic types. We also give two “minimal counterexamples” where G has unboundedly many global weakly generic types, extending the main results in [21] to a more general context.

Abstract:We prove that externally definable sets in first order NIP theories have honest definitions, giving a new proof of Shelah's expansion theorem. Also we discuss a weak notion of stable embeddedness true in this context. Those results are then used to prove a general theorem on dependent pairs, which in particular answers a question of Baldwin and Benedikt on naming an indiscernible sequence.

Abstract:We introduce a proof-theoretic method for showing nondefinability of second-order intuitionistic connectives by quantifier-free schemata. We apply the method to confirm that Taranovsky's "realizability disjunction" connective does not admit a quantifier-free definition, and use it to obtain new results and more nuanced information about the nondefinability of Kreisel's and Połacik's unary connectives. The finitary and combinatorial nature of our method makes it more resilient to changes in metatheory than common semantic approaches, whose robustness tends to waver once we pass to non-classical and especially anti-classical settings. Furthermore, we can easily transcribe the problem-specific subproofs into univalent type theory and check them using the Agda proof assistant.

Abstract:Abstract We continue our study from Peterzil et al. (2022, Preprint , arXiv:2208.08293) of finite-dimensional definable groups in models of the theory $T_{\partial }$ , the model companion of an o-minimal ${\mathcal {L}}$ -theory T expanded by a generic derivation $\partial $ as in Fornasiero and Kaplan (2021, Journal of Mathematical Logic 21, 2150007). We generalize Buium’s notion of an algebraic D -group to ${\mathcal {L}}$ -definable D -groups, namely $(G,s)$ , where G is an ${\mathcal {L}}$ -definable group in a model of T , and $s:G\to \tau (G)$ is an ${\mathcal {L}}$ -definable group section. Our main theorem says that every definable group of finite dimension in a model of $T_\partial $ is definably isomorphic to a group of the form $$ \begin{align*}(G,s)^\partial=\{g\in G:s(g)=\nabla g\},\end{align*} $$ for some ${\mathcal {L}}$ -definable D -group $(G,s)$ (where $\nabla (g)=(g,\partial g)$ ). We obtain analogous results when T is either the theory of p -adically closed fields or the theory of pseudo-finite fields of characteristic $0$ .

First-order definitions of rings of integral functions over algebraic extensions of function fields and undecidability

Abstract:In this paper, we study questions of definability and decidability for infinite algebraic extensions ${\bf K}$ of $\mathbb{F}_p(t)$ and their subrings of $\mathcal{S}$-integral functions. We focus on fields ${\bf K}$ satisfying a local property which we call $q$-boundedness. This can be considered a function field analogue of prior work of the first author which considered algebraic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$. One simple consequence of our work states that if ${\bf K}$ is a $q$-bounded Galois extension of $\mathbb{F}_p(t)$, then the integral closure $\mathcal{O}_{\bf K}$ of $\mathbb{F}_p[t]$ inside ${\bf K}$ is first-order definable in ${\bf K}$. Under the additional assumption that the constant subfield of ${\bf K}$ is infinite, it follows that both $\mathcal{O}_{\bf K}$ and ${\bf K}$ have undecidable first-order theories. Our primary tools are norm equations and the Hasse Norm Principle, in the spirit of Rumely. Our paper has an intersection with a recent arXiv preprint by Martínez-Ranero, Salcedo, and Utreras, although our definability results are more extensive and undecidability results are much stronger.

Abstract:This work deals with the definability problem by quantifier-free first-order formulas over a finite algebraic structure. We show the problem to be coNP-complete and present two decision algorithms based on a semantical characterization of definable relations as those preserved by isomorphisms of substructures, the second one also providing a formula in the positive case. Our approach also includes the design of an algorithm that computes the isomorphism type of a tuple in a finite algebraic structure. Proofs of soundness and completeness of the algorithms are presented, as well as empirical tests assessing their performances.

Abstract:We prove some technical results on definable types in $p$-adically closed fields, with consequences for definable groups and definable topological spaces. First, the code of a definable $n$-type (in the field sort) can be taken to be a real tuple (in the field sort) rather than an imaginary tuple (in the geometric sorts). Second, any definable type in the real or imaginary sorts is generated by a countable union of chains parameterized by the value group. Third, if $X$ is an interpretable set, then the space of global definable types on $X$ is strictly pro-interpretable, building off work of Cubides Kovacsics, Hils, and Ye. Fourth, global definable types can be lifted (in a non-canonical way) along interpretable surjections. Fifth, if $G$ is a definable group with definable f-generics ($dfg$), and $G$ acts on a definable set $X$, then the quotient space $X/G$ is definable, not just interpretable. This explains some phenomena observed by Pillay and Yao. Lastly, we show that interpretable topological spaces satisfy analogues of first-countability and curve selection. Using this, we show that all reasonable notions of definable compactness agree on interpretable topological spaces, and that definable compactness is definable in families.

A topological approach to undefinability in algebraic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$

Abstract:For any subset $Z \subseteq \mathbb{Q}$, consider the set $S_Z$ of subfields $L\subseteq \overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ which contain a co-infinite subset $C \subseteq L$ that is universally definable in $L$ such that $C \cap \mathbb{Q}=Z$. Placing a natural topology on the set $\text{Sub}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})$ of subfields of $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$, we show that if $Z$ is not thin in $\mathbb{Q}$, then $S_Z$ is meager in $\text{Sub}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})$. Here, thin and meager both mean "small", in terms of arithmetic geometry and topology, respectively. For example, this implies that only a meager set of fields $L$ have the property that the ring of algebraic integers $\mathcal{O}_L$ is universally definable in $L$. The main tools are Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem and a new normal form theorem for existential definitions. The normal form theorem, which may be of independent interest, says roughly that every $\exists$-definable subset of an algebraic extension of $\mathbb Q$ is a finite union of single points and projections of hypersurfaces defined by absolutely irreducible polynomials.

Abstract:We study approximate equivalence relations up to commensurability, in the presence of a definable measure. As a basic framework, we give a presentation of probability logic based on continuous logic. Hoover's normal form is valid here; if one begins with a discrete logic structure, it reduces arbitrary formulas of probability logic to correlations between quantifier-free formulas. We completely classify binary correlations in terms of the Kim-Pillay space, leading to strong results on the interpretative power of pure probability logic over a binary language. Assuming higher amalgamation of independent types, we prove a higher stationarity statement for such correlations. We also give a short model-theoretic proof of a categoricity theorem for continuous logic structures with a measure of full support, generalizing theorems of Gromov-Vershik and Keisler, and often providing a canonical model for a complete pure probability logic theory. These results also apply to local probability logic, providing in particular a canonical model for a local pure probability logic theory with a unique 1-type and geodesic metric. For sequences of approximate equivalence relations with an 'approximately unique' probability logic 1-type, we obtain a structure theorem generalizing the `Lie model' theorem for approximate subgroups. The models here are Riemannian homogeneous spaces, fibered over a locally finite graph. Specializing to definable graphs over finite fields, we show that after a finite partition, a definable binary relation converges in finitely many self-compositions to an equivalence relation of geometric origin. For NIP theories, pursuing a question of Pillay's, we prove an archimedean finite-dimensionality statement for the automorphism groups of definable measures, acting on a given type of definable sets.

One-dimensional subgroups and connected components in non-abelian $p$-adic definable groups

Abstract:We generalize two of our previous results on abelian definable groups in $p$-adically closed fields to the non-abelian case. First, we show that if $G$ is a definable group that is not definably compact, then $G$ has a one-dimensional definable subgroup which is not definably compact. This is a $p$-adic analogue of the Peterzil-Steinhorn theorem for o-minimal theories. Second, we show that if $G$ is a group definable over the standard model $\mathbb{Q}_p$, then $G^0 = G^{00}$. As an application, definably amenable groups over $\mathbb{Q}_p$ are open subgroups of algebraic groups, up to finite factors. We also prove that $G^0 = G^{00}$ when $G$ is a definable subgroup of a linear algebraic group, over any model.

Abstract:In this paper we obtain two results using amalgamation classes and Fraïssé limits. First, we construct a decidable theory T whose types are all decidable yet whose prime model is not decidable. Millar [15] constructed such example but his example uses an infinite language in an essential way. Our example uses one binary predicate symbol, that is, the models we construct are graphs. Second, for any finite lattice $\cal F$ we construct a theory T with countably many models such that the fundamental order determined by T is isomorphic to $\cal F$. As a by-product of this example, we propose the investigation of computable and decidable models of T by connecting them to the fundamental order of T.

Abstract:We show that including degrees of a particular kind of provability in the search target for any theorem-prover in sufficiently powerful formal systems over finite-sized statements preserves well-definition and a sufficient consistency while establishing completeness. Moreover, the union of such degrees is isomorphic to such a system's {\aleph_0} statements and permits the construction of a best-possible (up to a quadratic term) finite-time theorem knower, {\phi}', while still subject to limitations in these formal systems. These results, owing to the fact that {\phi}' may arise through the behavior of any unbounded inductive computation, establish results on the eventual behavior of a class of computational processes.

Abstract:We show that separability and second-countability are first-order properties among topological spaces definable in o-minimal expansions of $(\mathbb{R},<)$. We do so by introducing first-order characterizations -- definable separability and definable second-countability -- which make sense in a wider model-theoretic context. We prove that within o-minimality these notions have the desired properties, including their equivalence among definable metric spaces, and conjecture a definable version of Urysohn's Metrization Theorem.

Abstract:Using the Feferman-Vaught Theorem, we prove that a definable subset of a product structure must be a Boolean combination of open sets, in the product topology induced by giving each factor structure the discrete topology. We prove that for families of structures with certain properties, including families of integral domains, the pure Boolean generalized product is definable in the direct product structure. We use these results to obtain characterizations of the definable subsets of —in particular, every formula is equivalent to a Boolean combination of formulae.
