Abstract:We take an elementary approach to derive a generalization of Kunth's formula using Lassalle's explicit formula. In particular, we give a formula for the Kostka numbers of a shape $\mu\vdash n$ and weight $(m,1^{n-m})$ for $m=3,\;4$.

Abstract:The classical hook length formula counts the number of standard tableaux of straight shapes. In 1996, Okounkov and Olshanski found a positive formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape. We prove various properties of this formula, including three determinantal formulas for the number of nonzero terms, an equivalence between the Okounkov-Olshanski formula and another skew tableaux formula involving Knutson-Tao puzzles, and two $q$-analogues for reverse plane partitions, which complements work by Stanley and Chen for semistandard tableaux. We also give several reformulations of the formula, including two in terms of the excited diagrams appearing in a more recent skew tableaux formula by Naruse. Lastly, for thick zigzag shapes we show that the number of nonzero terms is given by a determinant of the Genocchi numbers and improve on known upper bounds by Morales-Pak-Panova on the number of standard tableaux of these shapes.

Abstract:The enumeration of standard Young tableaux (SYTs) of shape {\lambda} can be easily computed by the hook-length formula. In 1981, Amitai Regev proved that the number of SYTs having at most three rows with n entries equals the nth Motzkin number M_n. In 2006, Regev conjectured that the total number of SYTs of skew shape {\lambda}/(2, 1) over all partitions {\lambda} having at most three parts with n entries is the difference of two Motzkin numbers, M_{n-1} - M_{n-3}. Ekhad and Zeilberger proved Regev's conjecture using a computer program. In 2009, S.-P. Eu found a bijection between Motzkin paths and SYTs of skew shape with at most three rows to prove Regev's conjecture, and Eu also indirectly showed that for the fixed {\mu} = ({\mu}1,{\mu}2) the number of SYTs of skew shape {\lambda}/{\mu} over all partitions {\lambda} having at most three parts can be expressed as a linear combination of the Motzkin numbers. In this paper, we will find an explicit formula for the generating function for the general case: for each partition {\mu} having at most three parts the generating function gives a formula for the coefficients of the linear combination of Motzkin numbers. We will also show that these generating functions are unexpectedly related to the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.
Hook-length Formulas for Skew Shapes via Contour Integrals and Vertex Models

Abstract:The number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape $\lambda/\mu$ can be computed as a sum over excited diagrams inside $\lambda$. Excited diagrams are in bijection with certain lozenge tilings, with flagged semistandard tableaux and also nonintersecting lattice paths inside $\lambda$. We give two new proofs of a multivariate generalization of this formula, which allow us to extend the setup beyond standard Young tableaux and the underlying Schur symmetric polynomials. The first proof uses multiple contour integrals. The second one interprets excited diagrams as configurations of a six-vertex model at a free fermion point, and derives the formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape from the Yang-Baxter equation.

Minimal skew semistandard tableaux and the Hillman--Grassl correspondence

Abstract:Standard tableaux of skew shape are fundamental objects in enumerative and algebraic combinatorics and no product formula for the number is known. In 2014, Naruse gave a formula (NHLF) as a positive sum over excited diagrams of products of hook-lengths. Subsequently, Morales, Pak, and Panova gave a $q$-analogue of this formula in terms of skew semistandard tableaux (SSYT). They also showed, partly algebraically, that the Hillman--Grassl map, restricted to skew semistandard tableaux, is behind their $q$-analogue. We study the problem of circumventing the algebraic part and proving the bijection completely combinatorially, which we do for border strips. For a skew shape, we define minimal semistandard Young tableaux, that are in correspondence with excited diagrams via a new description of the Hillman--Grassl bijection and have an analogue of excited moves. Lastly, we relate the minimal skew SSYT with the terms of the Okounkov-Olshanski formula (OOF) for counting standard tableaux of skew shape. Our construction immediately implies that the summands in the NHLF are less than the summands in the OOF and we characterize the shapes where both formulas have the same number of summands.

Tableau formulas for skew Schubert polynomials

Abstract:The skew Schubert polynomials are those which are indexed by skew elements of the Weyl group, in the sense of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0812.0639" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0812.0639">arXiv:0812.0639</a>. We obtain tableau formulas for the double versions of these polynomials in all four classical Lie types, where the tableaux used are fillings of the associated skew Young diagram. These are the first such theorems for symplectic and orthogonal Schubert polynomials, even in the single case. We also deduce tableau formulas for double Schur, double theta, and double eta polynomials, in their specializations as double Grassmannian Schubert polynomials. The latter results generalize the tableau formulas for symmetric (and single) Schubert polynomials due to Littlewood (in type A) and the author (in types B, C, and D).

Abstract:We derive combinatorial identities, involving the Bernoulli and Euler numbers, for the numbers of standard Young tableaux of certain skew shapes. This generalizes the classical formulas of D. Andre on the number of up-down permutations. The analysis uses a transfer operator approach extending the method of Elkies, combined with an identity expressing the volume of a certain polytope in terms of a Schur function.

Abstract:The Naruse hook-length formula is a recent general formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of skew shapes, given as a positive sum over excited diagrams of products of hook-lengths. In [A. H. Morales, I. Pak, and G. Panova, Hook Formulas for Skew Shapes I. $q$-Analogues and Bijections] we gave two different $q$-analogues of Naruse's formula: for the skew Schur functions, and for counting reverse plane partitions of skew shapes. In this paper we give an elementary proof of Naruse's formula based on the case of border strips. For special border strips, we obtain curious new formulas for the Euler and $q$-Euler numbers in terms of certain Dyck path summations.

Abstract:An element of a Weyl group of classical type is skew if it is the left factor in a reduced factorization of a Grassmannian element. The skew Grothendieck polynomials are those which are indexed by skew elements of the Weyl group. We define set-valued tableaux which are fillings of the associated skew Young diagrams and use them to prove tableau formulas for the skew double Grothendieck polynomials in all four classical Lie types. We deduce tableau formulas for the Grassmannian Grothendieck polynomials and the K-theoretic analogues of the (double mixed) skew Stanley functions in the respective Lie types.

Abstract:We study k-Schur functions characterized by k-tableaux, proving combinatorial properties such as a k-Pieri rule and a k-conjugation. This new approach relies on developing the theory of k-tableaux, and includes the introduction of a weight-permuting involution on these tableaux that generalizes the Bender-Knuth involution. This work lays the groundwork needed to prove that the set of k-Schur Littlewood-Richardson coefficients contains the 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants; structure constants for the quantum cohomology ring.

The Latin Tableau Conjecture

Abstract:A Latin tableau of shape $\lambda$ and type $\mu$ is a Young diagram of shape $\lambda$ in which each box contains a single positive integer, with no repeated integers in any row or column, and the $i$th most common integer appearing $\mu_i$ times. Over twenty years ago, Chow et al., in their study of a generalization of Rota's basis conjecture that they called the wide partition conjecture, conjectured a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a Latin tableau of shape $\lambda$ and type $\mu$. We report some computational evidence for this conjecture, and prove that the conjecture correctly characterizes, for any given $\lambda$, at least the first four parts of $\mu$.

Skew Schur Functions of Sums of Fat Staircases

Abstract:We define a fat staircase to be a Ferrers diagram corresponding to a partition of the form $(n^{\alpha_n}, {n-1}^{\alpha_{n-1}},..., 1^{\alpha_1})$, where $\alpha = (\alpha_1,...,\alpha_n)$ is a composition, or the $180^\circ$ rotation of such a diagram. If a diagram's skew Schur function is a linear combination of Schur functions of fat staircases, we call the diagram a sum of fat staircases. We prove a Schur-positivity result that is obtained each time we augment a sum of fat staircases with a skew diagram. We also determine conditions on which diagrams can be sums of fat staircases, including necessary and sufficient conditions in the special case when the diagram is a fat staircase skew a single row or column.

Abstract:We introduce a new combinatorial object, semistandard increasing decomposition tableau and study its relation to a semistandard decomposition tableau introduced by Kraśkiewicz and developed by Lam and Serrano. We also introduce generalized Littlewood--Richardson coefficients for products of Schur's symmetric functions and give combinatorial descriptions in terms of tableau words. The insertion algorithms play central roles for proofs. A new description of shifted Littlewood--Richardson coefficients is given in terms of semistandard increasing decomposition tableaux. We show that a "big" Schur function is expressed as a sum of products of two Schur $P$-functions, and vice versa. As an application, we derive two Giambelli formulae for big Schur functions: one is a determinant and the other is a Pfaffian.

Abstract:The $K$-$k$-Schur functions and $k$-Schur functions appeared in the study of $K$-theoretic and affine Schubert Calculus as polynomial representatives of Schubert classes. In this paper, we introduce a new family of symmetric functions $\mathcal{F}_\lambda^{(k)}$, that generalizes the constructions via the Pieri rule of $K$-$k$-Schur functions and $ k$-Schur functions. Then we obtain the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for the generalized functions. The rule is described explicitly in the cases of $K$-$k$-Schur functions and $k$-Schur functions, with concrete descriptions and algorithms for coefficients. Our work recovers the result of Bandlow, Schilling, and Zabrocki for $k$-Schur functions, and explains it as a degeneration of the rule for $K$-$k$-Schur functions. In particular, many other special cases and connections promise to be detailed in the future.

Abstract:We prove Stanley's conjecture that, if delta_n is the staircase shape, then the skew Schur functions s_{delta_n / mu} are non-negative sums of Schur P-functions. We prove that the coefficients in this sum count certain fillings of shifted shapes. In particular, for the skew Schur function s_{delta_n / delta_{n-2}}, we discuss connections with Eulerian numbers and alternating permutations.

Abstract:In chemistry, Cyvin-Gutman enumerates Kekulé numbers for certain benzenoids and record it as $A050446$ on OEIS. This number is exactly the two variable array $T(n,m)$ defined by the recursion $T(n, m) = T(n, m-1) + \sum^{\lfloor\frac{n-1}{2}\rfloor}_{k=0} T(2k, m-1)T(n-1-2k, m)$, where $T(n,0)=T(0,m)=1$ for all nonnegative integers $m,n$. Interestingly, this number also appeared in the context of weighted graphs, graph polytopes, magic labellings, and unit primitive matrices, studied by different authors. Several interesting conjectures were made on the OEIS. These conjectures are related to both the row and column generating function of $T(n,m)$. In this paper, give explicit formula of the column generating function, which is also the generating function $F(n,x)$ studied by Bóna, Ju, and Yoshida. We also get trig function representations by using Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. This allows us to prove all these conjectures.

Abstract:We give explicit formulas for the recently introduced Schur multiple zeta values, which generalize multiple zeta(-star) values and which assign to a Young tableaux a real number. In this note we consider Young tableaux of various shapes, filled with alternating entries like a Checkerboard. In particular we obtain new sum representation for odd single zeta values in terms of these Schur multiple zeta values. As a special case we show that some Schur multiple zeta values of Checkerboard style, filled with 1 and 3, are given by determinants of matrices with odd single zeta values as entries.

Abstract:The Littlewood-Richardson (LR) coefficient counts among many other things the LR tableaux of a given shape and a given content. We prove, that the number of LR tableaux weakly increases if one adds to the shape and the content the shape and the content of another LR tableau. We also investigate the behaviour of the number of LR tableaux, if one repeatedly adds to the shape another shape with either fixed or arbitrary content. This is a generalisation of the stretched LR coefficients, where one repeatedly adds the same shape and content to itself.

Abstract:We give a Pieri-type formula for the sum of $K$-$k$-Schur functions $\sum_{\mu\le\lambda} g^{(k)}_{\mu}$ over a principal order ideal of the poset of $k$-bounded partitions under the strong Bruhat order, which sum we denote by $\widetilde{g}^{(k)}_{\lambda}$. As an application of this, we also give a $k$-rectangle factorization formula $\widetilde{g}^{(k)}_{R_t\cup\lambda}=\widetilde{g}^{(k)}_{R_t} \widetilde{g}^{(k)}_{\lambda}$ where $R_t=(t^{k+1-t})$, analogous to that of $k$-Schur functions $s^{(k)}_{R_t\cup\lambda}=s^{(k)}_{R_t}s^{(k)}_{\lambda}$.

Rhombic staircase tableaux and Koornwinder polynomials

Abstract:In this article we give a combinatorial formula for a certain class of Koornwinder polynomials, also known as Macdonald polynomials of type $\tilde{C}$. In particular, we give a combinatorial formula for the Koornwinder polynomials $K_{\lambda} = K_{\lambda}(z_1,\dots,z_N; a,b,c,d; q,t)$, where $\lambda = (1,\dots,1,0,\dots,0)$. We also give combinatorial formulas for all ``open boundary ASEP polynomials'' $F_{\mu}$, where $\mu$ is a composition in $\{-1,0,1\}^N$; these polynomials are related to the nonsymmetric Koornwinder polynomials $E_{\mu}$ up to a triangular change of basis. Our formulas are in terms of rhombic staircase tableaux, certain tableaux that we introduced in previous work to give a formula for the stationary distribution of the two-species asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on a line with open boundaries.
