Abstract:Some formulae are given for the enumeration of certain types of dissections of the convex (n+2)-gon by non-crossing diagonals. The classical Schroeder and Motzkin numbers are addressed using a cataloguing tool, the "reversive symbol". The elementary details are referred to three Web addresses.

Abstract:This paper proves explicit formulas for the number of dissections of a convex regular polygon modulo the action of the cyclic and dihedral groups. The formulas are obtained by making use of the Cauchy-Frobenius Lemma as well as bijections between rotationally symmetric dissections and simpler classes of dissections. A number of special cases of these formulas are studied. Consequently, some known enumerations are recovered and several new ones are provided.

Abstract:The Catalan numbers $C_k$ were first studied by Euler, in the context of enumerating triangulations of polygons $P_{k+2}$. Among the many generalizations of this sequence, the Fuss-Catalan numbers $C^{(d)}_k$ count enumerations of dissections of polygons $P_{k(d-1)+2}$ into $(d+1)$-gons. In this paper, we provide a formula enumerating polygonal dissections of $(n+2)$-gons, classified by partitions $\lambda$ of $[n]$. We connect these counts $a_{\lambda}$ to reverse series arising from iterated polynomials. Generalizing this further, we show that the coefficients of the reverse series of polynomials $x=z-\sum_{j=0}^{\infty} b_j z^{j+1}$ enumerate colored polygonal dissections.

Generalized Dissections and Monsky's Theorem

Abstract:Monsky's celebrated equidissection theorem follows from his more general proof of the existence of a polynomial relation $f$ among the areas of the triangles in a dissection of the unit square. More recently, the authors studied a different polynomial $p$, also a relation among the areas of the triangles in such a dissection, that is invariant under certain deformations of the dissection. In this paper we study the relationship between these two polynomials. We first generalize the notion of dissection, allowing triangles whose orientation differs from that of the plane. We define a deformation space of these generalized dissections and we show that this space is an irreducible algebraic variety. We then extend the theorem of Monsky to the context of generalized dissections, showing that Monsky's polynomial $f$ can be chosen to be invariant under deformation. Although $f$ is not uniquely defined, the interplay between $p$ and $f$ then allows us to identify a canonical pair of choices for the polynomial $f$. In many cases, all of the coefficients of the canonical $f$ polynomials are positive. We also use the deformation-invariance of $f$ to prove that the polynomial $p$ is congruent modulo 2 to a power of the sum of its variables.

Commutative Properties of Schubert Puzzles with Convex Polygonal Boundary Shapes

Abstract:We generalize classical triangular Schubert puzzles to puzzles with convex polygonal boundary. We give these puzzles a geometric Schubert calculus interpretation and derive novel combinatorial commutativity statements, using purely geometric arguments, for puzzles with four, five, and six sides, having various types of symmetry in their boundary conditions. We also present formulas for the associated structure constants in terms of Littlewood-Richardson numbers, and we prove an analogue of commutativity for parallelogram-shaped equivariant puzzles.

Abstract:We define a far-reaching generalization of Schnyder woods which encompasses many classical combinatorial structures on planar graphs. Schnyder woods are defined for planar triangulations as certain triples of spanning trees covering the triangulation and crossing each other in an orderly fashion. They are of theoretical and practical importance, as they are central to the proof that the order dimension of any planar graph is at most 3, and they are also underlying an elegant drawing algorithm. In this article we extend the concept of Schnyder wood well beyond its original setting: for any integer d>2 we define a ``grand-Schnyder'' structure for (embedded) planar graphs which have faces of degree at most d and non-facial cycles of length at least d. We prove the existence of grand-Schnyder structures, provide a linear construction algorithm, describe 4 different incarnations (in terms of tuples of trees, corner labelings, weighted orientations, and marked orientations), and define a lattice for the set of grand Schnyder structures of a given planar graph. We show that the grand-Schnyder framework unifies and extends several classical constructions: Schnyder woods and Schnyder decompositions, regular edge-labelings (a.k.a. transversal structures), and Felsner woods.

Abstract:We derive combinatorial identities, involving the Bernoulli and Euler numbers, for the numbers of standard Young tableaux of certain skew shapes. This generalizes the classical formulas of D. Andre on the number of up-down permutations. The analysis uses a transfer operator approach extending the method of Elkies, combined with an identity expressing the volume of a certain polytope in terms of a Schur function.

Abstract:This is the second part of the article on doubly symmetric diagrams and strongly positive amphicheiral knots. We develop an enumeration strategy for prime knots given by doubly symmetric diagrams and determine all cases up to 18 crossings in the doubly symmetric diagram. A digression covers the origin of Gauss words for long curves and explains how Gauss marked non-realizable words.

Abstract:We prove a formula which gives the number of occurrences of certain labels and local configurations inside two-step puzzles introduced by Buch, Kresch, Purbhoo and Tamvakis from the work of Knutson. Puzzles are tilings of the triangular lattice by edge labeled tiles and are known to compute the Schubert structure constants of the cohomology of two-step flag varieties. The formula that we obtain depends only on the boundary conditions of the puzzle. The proof is based on the study of color maps which are tilings of the triangular lattice by edge labeled tiles obtained from puzzles.

Abstract:The cross‐ratio degree problem counts configurations of n points on P1 with n−3 prescribed cross‐ratios. Cross‐ratio degrees arise in many corners of combinatorics and geometry, but their structure is not well‐understood in general. Interestingly, examining various special cases of the problem can yield combinatorial structures that are both diverse and rich. In this paper, we prove a simple closed formula for a class of cross‐ratio degrees indexed by triangulations of an n ‐gon; these degrees are connected to the geometry of the real locus of M0,n , and to positive geometry.

Enumeration of corner polyhedra and 3-connected Schnyder labelings

Abstract:We show that corner polyhedra and 3-connected Schnyder labelings join the growing list of planar structures that can be set in exact correspondence with (weighted) models of quadrant walks via a bijection due to Kenyon, Miller, Sheffield and Wilson. Our approach leads to a first polynomial time algorithm to count these structures, and to the determination of their exact asymptotic growth constants: the number $p_n$ of corner polyhedra and $s_n$ of 3-connected Schnyder labelings of size $n$ respectively satisfy $(p_n)^{1/n}\to 9/2$ and $(s_n)^{1/n}\to 16/3$ as $n$ goes to infinity. While the growth rates are rational, like in the case of previously known instances of such correspondences, the exponent of the asymptotic polynomial correction to the exponential growth does not appear to follow from the now standard Denisov-Wachtel approach, due to a bimodal behavior of the step set of the underlying tandem walk. However a heuristic argument suggests that these exponents are $-1-\pi/\arccos(9/16)\approx -4.23$ for $p_n$ and $-1-\pi/\arccos(22/27)\approx -6.08$ for $s_n$, which would imply that the associated series are not D-finite.

Abstract:Consider k x n matrices with rank conditions placed on intervals of columns. The ranks that are actually achievable correspond naturally to upper triangular partial permutation matrices, and we call the corresponding subvarieties of Gr(k,n) the _interval positroid varieties_, as this class lies within the class of positroid varieties studied in [Knutson-Lam-Speyer]. It includes Schubert and opposite Schubert varieties, and their intersections, and is Grassmann dual to the projection varieties of [Billey-Coskun]. Vakil's "geometric Littlewood-Richardson rule" [Vakil] uses certain degenerations to positively compute the H^*-classes of Richardson varieties, each summand recorded as a (2+1)-dimensional "checker game". We use his same degenerations to positively compute the K_T-classes of interval positroid varieties, each summand recorded more succinctly as a 2-dimensional "K-IP pipe dream". In Vakil's restricted situation these IP pipe dreams biject very simply to the puzzles of [Knutson-Tao]. We relate Vakil's degenerations to Erd\H os-Ko-Rado shifting, and include results about computing "geometric shifts" of general T-invariant subvarieties of Grassmannians.

Abstract:Involution words are variations of reduced words for involutions in Coxeter groups, first studied under the name of "admissible sequences" by Richardson and Springer. They are maximal chains in Richardson and Springer's weak order on involutions. This article is the first in a series of papers on involution words, and focuses on their enumerative properties. We define involution analogues of several objects associated to permutations, including Rothe diagrams, the essential set, Schubert polynomials, and Stanley symmetric functions. These definitions have geometric interpretations for certain intervals in the weak order on involutions. In particular, our definition of "involution Schubert polynomials" can be viewed as a Billey-Jockusch-Stanley type formula for cohomology class representatives of $\mathrm{O}_n$- and $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}$-orbit closures in the flag variety, defined inductively in recent work of Wyser and Yong. As a special case of a more general theorem, we show that the involution Stanley symmetric function for the longest element of a finite symmetric group is a product of staircase-shaped Schur functions. This implies that the number of involution words for the longest element of a finite symmetric group is equal to the dimension of a certain irreducible representation of a Weyl group of type $B$.

On the Okounkov-Olshanski formula for standard tableaux of skew shapes

Abstract:The classical hook length formula counts the number of standard tableaux of straight shapes. In 1996, Okounkov and Olshanski found a positive formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape. We prove various properties of this formula, including three determinantal formulas for the number of nonzero terms, an equivalence between the Okounkov-Olshanski formula and another skew tableaux formula involving Knutson-Tao puzzles, and two $q$-analogues for reverse plane partitions, which complements work by Stanley and Chen for semistandard tableaux. We also give several reformulations of the formula, including two in terms of the excited diagrams appearing in a more recent skew tableaux formula by Naruse. Lastly, for thick zigzag shapes we show that the number of nonzero terms is given by a determinant of the Genocchi numbers and improve on known upper bounds by Morales-Pak-Panova on the number of standard tableaux of these shapes.

Abstract:Egge and Mansour have recently studied permutations which avoid 1243 and 2143 regarding the occurrence of certain additional patterns. Some of the open questions related to their work can easily be answered by using permutation diagrams. Like for 132-avoiding permutations the diagram approach gives insights into the structure of {1243,2143}-avoiding permutations that yield simple proofs for some enumerative results concerning forbidden patterns in such permutations.

Abstract:Fang and Fourier defined the symplectic Dellac configurations in order to parametrize the torus fixed points of the symplectic degenerated flag varieties, and conjectured that their numbers are the elements of a sequence of integers (1, 2, 10, 98, 1594, ...) which appears in the study by Randrianarivony and Zeng of the median Euler numbers. In this paper, we prove the conjecture by considering a combinatorial interpretation of these integers in terms of the surjective pistols (which form a well-known combinatorial model of the Genocchi numbers), and constructing an appropriate surjection from the symplectic Dellac configurations to the surjective pistols.

Counting 3-uple Veronese surfaces

Abstract:This paper culminates in the count of the number of 3-Veronese surfaces passing through 13 general points. This follows the case of 2-Veronese surfaces discovered by Coble in the 1920's. One important element of the calculation is a direct construction of a space of "complete triangles." Our construction is different from the classical ordered constructions of Schubert, Collino and Fulton, as it occurs directly on the Hilbert scheme of length 3 subschemes of the plane. We transport the enumerative problem into a 26-dimensional Grassmannian bundle over our space of complete triangles, where we perform Atiyah-Bott localization. Several important questions arise, which we collect at the end of the paper.

Abstract:In order to study two-sided skew braces, we introduce the notion of weakly trivial skew braces. We give a classification of such skew braces and show that they are essential in the study of two-sided skew braces. As an application, we obtain new and generalize known results relating the additive and multiplicative group of two-sided skew braces. Further, we show that two a priori different notions of prime and semi-prime skew braces, as introduced by Konovalov, Smoktunowicz and Vendramin, coincide for two-sided skew braces.

Abstract:A crown diagram of a smooth, closed oriented 4-manifold can be thought of as the projection of a link in the product of a closed surface and the circle, with chords in the circle direction connecting the strands of each crossing. This paper uses a straightforward assignment of integers to these chords to show that the smooth structures on the topological 4-manifold underlying a pair of Fintushel-Stern knot surgery 4-manifolds which are known to have the same Seiberg-Witten invariant are not isotopic. A natural question is to determine if the argument may be strengthened to show these manifolds are not diffeomorphic.
