Abstract:Although data mining and knowledge discovery techniques have been used to clinical medicine frequently, little research has been conducted on hospital decision-making. Decision-making is a crucial part of hospital management, and it goes the whole process of medical behavior. Medical data in hospital information system is always complicated and especial, and this consequently aggravates burden on data analysis. In this paper, we explore how data mining and knowledge discovery can be applied to hospital management, and propose a modified data mining method that is appropriate for mass data in Hospital Information System. We first build a model based on inpatient fees theme, and then analyze it in three aspects: medical insurance fee, department annual fee and fee compositions. The knowledge discovery and analysis is based on Intersystem BI tool DeepSee.

Abstract:The paper aims at investigating health information technologies impacts on electronic business in quality and revenue hospitals. Specifically, first, a hospital electronic customer chain (HECC) model is built to analyse details on how health information technologies are integrated in the hospital business to improve quality and revenue. Second, the HECC model was further decomposed to derive standardised electronic business solutions. Data was collected from two groups of hospitals with succeeding on quality and revenue, respectively. Third, a comparison was conducted to investigate the electronic business implementation pattern in both quality and revenue groups. The results from two-sample t-test show that the majority of the e-business solutions of the revenue group have the average score less than or equal to that of the quality group. The findings will help hospitals to accelerate the health information technologies adoption in the hospital electronic business. Theoretical and practical implications are also presented.

Abstract:Based on the information construction and taking a hospital as an example, this paper analyzes the current situation, existing problems, and reasons for financial management. This paper puts forward the scheme of optimizing hospital financial management and points out that accounting, asset management, cost management, and performance are all based on accounting. Even though with the continuous improvement and development of hospital informatization, various infrastructures have been built, the problems are more prominent. This can be solved by improving the focus on the products, and processes by reducing waste, or by increasing the quality. In hospitals, the core layer of hospital information technology is the financial management construction and development, and it is also an indispensable factor. It is better to improve the hospital's financial fine management level and promote the hospital's sustainable development. It is not enough to improve the assessment management and comprehensive budget management. It is necessary to integrate the perfect Health Information System, enterprise resource planning system, scientific research system, and structured query language database, establish a comprehensive financial management platform, and obtain data information and indicators of various economic operations in hospitals. Experiments show that the consumables sorting optimization algorithm in this paper can improve the equipment management of medical finance to some extent. In other aspects, this system also incorporates information technology to make enhancements to the original financial management.

Abstract:Existing management information systems (MIS) in hospitals are often inadequate. This has occurred because of a variety of antecedents, including past funding mechanisms, organisational structure and the accepted role of management. A variety of new pressures, including demands for increased accountability, greater resource control and changing relationships between physicians and hospitals are demanding improved MIS to enable the hospital to manage. This paper explores these influences on past and future hospital MIS. It describes the design of a MIS that enables patient care to be costed in clinically meaningful ways. Patient costs may be aggregated to cost specific diagnoses and procedures, Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG), a clinician's case load, a clinical unit or a division. The information can be used for clinical budgeting, flexible budgeting, utilisation review and quality assurance.

Abstract:In late 2006, a 340-bed, not-for-profit, tertiary-care medical center implemented an electronic nursing inpatient documentation system. The computerized software replaced the paper nursing documentation system and was intended to efficiently capture inpatient healthcare information at the point of care. Preimplementation and postimplementation surveys were administered to evaluate nursing staff attitudes and satisfaction levels and their reactions to computers and the system implementation. A modified Stronge-Brodt Nurses' Attitudes Toward Computers questionnaire was used for this quasi-experimental study that included a convenience sample of nurses from seven different nursing units. Attitudes were measured using the Nurses' Attitudes Toward Computers questionnaire, and satisfaction was measured using a researcher-developed visual analog scale. Findings included decreased overall satisfaction with and a decrease in positive attitudes toward computerization from the presurvey through postsurvey. Recommendations for future studies and successful electronic medical record implementation were identified.

Abstract:This paper aims at reviewing the strategic advantage of automated system of remittance in extensive network of healthcare institution in terms of cost-effectiveness and efficient financial operation. Quantitative data of various healthcare organisations’ financial performance are also combined with qualitative data collected from multiple stakeholders of the organisations. These findings reveal that mechanized staying remarkably decrease the significant expenses, increases the payment cycle by as much as 40% and optimize sojourning receipts. The work also reveals the issues of linking, functioning, and updating of automated systems with existing IT equipment. Nonetheless, based on these difficulties, the study implies efficiency of applying automation in large healthcare networks to maximize the overall returns and fix costs in the long run. This study shows the generality of automation in healthcare finance and lays a context for more extend the automation to small healthcare facilities and introducing more elements of technologies such as the AI.

Abstract:Background The process of manually recording the consumption of medical materials can be time consuming and prone to omission owing to its detailed and complicated nature. Implementing an information system will better improve work performance. Objective The Information System Success Model was adopted as the theoretical foundation. The opinions of nursing staff were collected to verify the impact of the system intervention on their work performance. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted at a regional teaching hospital. Nursing staff were invited to participate in the field survey. A total of 296 questionnaires were collected, and of these, 284 (95.9%) were valid and returned. Results The key findings showed that two critical factors (“subjective norm” and “system quality”) had significant positive effects (both P<.001) on user satisfaction (R2=0.709). The path of “service quality” to “user satisfaction” showed marginal significance (P=.08) under the 92% CI. Finally, the explanatory power of the model reached 68.9%. Conclusions Support from the top management, appointment of a nurse supervisor as the change agent, recruitment of seed members to establish a pioneer team, and promotion of the system through the influence of opinion leaders in small groups were critical success factors needed for implementing the system in the case hospital. The target system was proven to be able to improve work performance, and the time saved could be further used for patient care, thereby increasing the value of nursing work. The positive experiences gained from this study could lay the foundation for the further promotion of the new system, and this is for future studies to replicate. The example of the successful experience of the case hospital could also serve as a reference for other hospitals in developing countries like Taiwan with regard to the promotion of nursing informatization.

Abstract:Background: Financial statements provide vital information to department chiefs and hospital leadership alike. They reflect departmental performance and guide critical financial decisions for their teams. However, financial statements can be inherently difficult to read and interpret and require time and attention, understandably challenging for busy clinicians. Methods: Here, we aimed to demystify the several types of financial statements, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements, and explain what they reveal (and ignore). We describe key performance indicators based on these statements that are routinely used by hospital administrations. This work targets clinicians, team leaders, academic faculty, and administrators alike, recognizing that all of them share the same goals. Results: Mastering the basics of financial statements and using the information within them creates a healthier clinical practice. In turn, it enhances provider satisfaction and enables the team to deliver patient care without financial anxiety. Conclusions: Understanding financial statements helps shared decision-making between clinicians and their administrators-strengthening partnerships that synergistically drive revenue, profitability, and growth.

Abstract:Software development in biomedicine continues to face challenges due to many factors including the complexity of the field, communication difficulties between healthcare professionals and software developers, and lack of standards that would facilitate communication among multiple institutions. In this work, approaches to dealing with biomedical decision making are discussed with implications in modeling the status of each patient on an individual basis. The software is based on an intelligent agent structure that incorporates a number of reasoning paradigms and a variety of input parameters ranging from text description to numerical data. The methods are illustrated in an application for cardiac diagnosis.

Abstract:As health-care consumers face increasing responsibility for medical care costs, health systems have launched innovative programmes to help patients successfully engage in the financial process from pre-service to final billing. Both national and regional organisations are employing automation, optimised workflows and dedicated patient teams to improve transparency and communicate more personally with patients as they make important financial decisions. This article explores how to leverage processes, technology and automation to give patients the full financial picture, access to affordability tools and the ability to self-serve. A host of important steps were used to measure patient preferences with the desired outcome of enabling patients to make self-service payments. Other target outcomes included moving a significant proportion of patients onto self-service payment plans, with the goal of reducing accounts receivable (A/R) days and collection costs while improving patient satisfaction. Also envisioned were digital patient engagement tools that would allow patients to view their entire financial picture, understand costs, self-enrol in payment plans and access critical information, providing convenience and ease of access and making it easier for patients to financially engage while improving the overall patient experience.

Abstract:Physician practices as well as hospital and other health care institutions must work diligently to maintain viability given the economic severity of today's health care arena. Operational reviews, system reviews, and periodic internal audits all contribute to helping a practice be as efficient and effective as possible. Practices must make a conscious and continual effort to work toward meeting their established objectives. Versatile and flexible computerized systems seem to be a frequently chosen alternative for practices of all sizes to maximize reimbursement and streamlining the operational aspects of the practice. If the decision is made to purchase a computer system, it will require a team of energetic, enthusiastic people committed throughout the scope of the project. System conversion and implementation may take from two weeks to six months depending on vendor, practice size, and specialty. Ample training, conversion, and installation assistance must be arranged with the vendor. Dedication, hard work, and long hours are crucial to ensure success. The system's return on investment can be realized, yielding financial controls and operational stability. The end result is to make the practice more efficient, giving the physician more time to concentrate on the optimal mission--patient care.

Abstract:Healthcare knowledge management systems can mitigate hospitals' operational inefficiency. As a healthcare information technology, the electronic health record (EHR) receives much attention from medical institutions due to its considerable impact on operational cost performance. This paper focuses on EHR systems to address operational inefficiency by which patients pay more for health care services, and many U.S. hospitals are filing for bankruptcy. From the theoretical perspective of the practice-based view, this paper introduces a path to implement EHR systems for improving cost performance. The empirical investigation is archival data of 200 hospitals collected from the U.S. healthcare agencies. Findings contribute to prior work by hypothesizing moderating and mediating roles in EHR systems implementation. This paper introduces absorptive capacity and monitoring mechanisms as enablers of implementing EHR systems. The results showed that hospital monitoring strengthens the relationship between absorptive capacity and electronic health record systems implementation, which results in better operational cost performance. Theoretically, this study supports the long-term potential benefits of EHR adoption, and its findings are consistent with optimizing efficiency through data standardization and interoperability. From a practical perspective, this study supports hospitals' investments in evolving healthcare information technology systems through the development of a knowledge-based system employing EHR, particularly when hospitals are merging or need a financial strategic plan to control expenses.

Abstract:The hospital's management system includes improved profitability, improved administration, and better patient care. The goal of this study is to create a digital management system that will boost the hospital's effectiveness and systems integration standards. It was able to produce a module that would provide some facilities, like booking doctors, booking lab test slots, pharmacy services, and getting health programs. This system consists of an admin handling part, which means admin can manage users, pharmacy systems, health program management, and manage booking of doctor's appointments and lab tests. And through this system, the admin can generate multiple reports according to his needs[7]. A module that would manage the admission bills and pharmaceutical payments; and a module that could monitor the medicine inventory of the hospital pharmacy. Problem statement because hospitals are associated with ordinary people's lives and daily routines the manual handling of the record is time-consuming and highly prone to error. The purpose of this project is to automate, or make online, the process of day-to-day activities. Each phase guided the researchers in the development of the study and helped them organize the workflow of each task. In conclusion, the researchers found that the system could speed up the working progress and productivity of hospital employees. It could also generate hospital reports that could help the users to provide an overview of the hospital transaction within specific date. It also provided the facility for searching for the details of the inquiring patient in the receptionist module. The system could reduce the workloads in the hospital, resulting in better management and working performance. In general, the study resulted in a better improvement of hospital transactions. It has been recommended that there is a need to enhance the frontend design of the system.

A decision support system for quantitative measurement of operational efficiency in a blood collection facility

Abstract:A decision support system (DSS) is presented that allows users to input, analyze, and output data derived from blood banking operations. The DSS developed is a hybrid system that is both data and model driven. The system provides information, models, and data manipulation tools to assist users in the quantitative measurement of the operational efficiency in a blood collection facility. A relational database was developed to address the four major variables, which impact the cost per unit of blood being collected. Using visual basic, a user interface and mathematical model were developed establishing the relationships to analyze cost per unit of collected blood. Using inputs from users and historical financial data, the DSS calculates the cost per unit as each of the major variables is altered. Real life situations by the mobile operations team at a blood collection facility were used to test the DSS.

Abstract:Radiology tests, such as MRI, CT-scan, X-ray and ultrasound, are cost intensive and insurance pre-approvals are necessary to get reimbursement. In some cases, tests may be denied for payments by insurance companies due to lack of pre-approvals, inaccurate or missing necessary information. This can lead to substantial revenue losses for the hospital. In this paper, we present a simulation study of a centralized scheduling process for outpatient radiology tests at a large community hospital (Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky). Based on analysis of the central scheduling process, a simulation model of information flow in the process has been developed. Using such a model, the root causes of financial losses associated with errors and omissions in this process were identified and analyzed, and their impacts were quantified. In addition, "what-if" analysis was conducted to identify potential process improvement strategies in the form of recommendations to the hospital leadership. Such a model provides a quantitative tool for continuous improvement and process control in radiology outpatient test scheduling process to reduce financial losses associated with process error. This method of analysis is also applicable to other departments in the hospital.

Abstract:After 2 years of experience with a basic computerized system for documenting care, the nursing leaders in an inner city hospital undertook a redesign process to create an effective and efficient system for documentation that also provided data for monitoring care processes, patient outcomes, and staff performance. The basic system was a source of frustration and dissatisfaction for nurses, physicians, and managers. The redesigned system has exceeded the expectations of staff and physicians and delighted managers. Managers can now access the clinical data collected by the staff to create meaningful reports describing the patient population, identifying patients needs, monitoring staff compliance with care standards, and tracking improvements in care processes.
