Abstract:We propose a new scenario to implement spontaneous symmetry breaking in the space-time of an arbitrary dimension (D>2) by introducing the non-minimal coupling between the scalar field and the gravity. In this scenario, the usage of the familiar lambda Phi ^4 term, which is non-renormalizable for D >= 5, can be avoided altogether.

Abstract:Spontaneous symmetry breaking occurs when the underlying laws of a physical system are symmetric, but the vacuum state chosen by the system is not. The (3+1)d $\phi^4$ theory is relatively simple compared to other more complex theories, making it a good starting point for investigating the origin of non-trivial vacua. The adaptive perturbation method is a technique used to handle strongly coupled systems. The study of strongly correlated systems is useful in testing holography. It has been successful in strongly coupled QM and is being generalized to scalar field theory to analyze the system in the strong-coupling regime. The unperturbed Hamiltonian does not commute with the usual number operator. However, the quantized scalar field admits a plane-wave expansion when acting on the vacuum. While quantizing the scalar field theory, the field can be expanded into plane-wave modes, making the calculations more tractable. However, the Lorentz symmetry, which describes how physical laws remain the same under certain spacetime transformations, might not be manifest in this approach. The proposed elegant resummation of Feynman diagrams aims to restore the Lorentz symmetry in the calculations. The results obtained using this method are compared with numerical solutions for specific values of the coupling constant $\lambda = 1, 2, 4, 8, 16$. Finally, we find evidence for quantum triviality, where self-consistency of the theory in the UV requires $\lambda = 0$. This result implies that the $\phi^4$ theory alone does not experience SSB, and the $\langle \phi\rangle = 0$ phase is protected under the RG-flow by a boundary of Gaussian fixed-points.

Space-time approach to spontaneous symmetry breaking in the Abelian-gauge interaction

Abstract:Spontaneous symmetry breaking is examined by regarding it as a phenomenon in the eternal intermediate state due to sequential perturbations. The concept of the relativistic many-body state is applied to this intermediate state occurring in the collision of massless Dirac fermions. Time in the relativistic many-body state should evolve while maintaining the direction of time in each particle, even if the particles are viewed from any inertial frames. This kinematical requirement leads to spontaneous symmetry breaking in the vacuum of these states, which gives a different meaning to the results of the Higgs model. In this vacuum, massless fermion-antifermion pairs and coherent collection of gauge bosons condense, which determine each other's mass. When a local excitation of the condensed gauge bosons propagates in space, a Higgs-like boson appears. The effective coupling of this Higgs-like boson to gauge bosons is calculated as a one-loop process. With this coupling, the total cross section of the pair annihilation of fermion and antifermion to gauge boson pair is calculated. Renormalizability of this model is discussed using the inductive method. Since the Higgs Lagrangian is not assumed, the divergence we must renormalize is only the logarithmic divergence, not the quadratic one.

Abstract:We generalize the recently introduced extended scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet (ESTGB) theories and their close relatives to include spontaneous growth of nonscalar fields such as vectors. This is analogous to the program that developed spontaneous tensorization from the original spontaneous scalarization theory of Damour and Esposito-Farèse (DEF). The new larger family of theories conserves the appeal of the DEF theory in terms of conforming to weak-field tests and also providing large signals in strong gravity. Moreover, they provide a much richer phenomenology including spontaneous tensorization of black holes as in ESTGB. These theories, together with other possible future extensions that we discuss, testify to the ubiquity of spontaneous growth in gravity. We also note that theories with derivative coupling require special attention since they can lead to potentially problematic higher derivatives in the equations of motion.

Abstract:We consider dynamics of a scalar field in compactification scenario of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet cosmology. It is shown that if the field is non-minimally coupled to curvature, its asymptotic value under certain conditions may be shifted from the minimum of its potential. This means that due to influence of extra dimensions a scalar field with $\lambda \phi^4$ potential can stabilise away from $\phi=0$ stable point which means an effective symmetry breaking occurs in such a system.

Abstract:It has been shown previously, that the spatial thermal variation of a thermal medium can be recast as a variation in the Euclidean metric. It is now extended to temporal variations in temperature, for a non-relativistic thermal bath, which remains in local thermal equilibrium. This is achieved by examining the thermal field theory in a five-dimensional space-time-temperature. The bulk thermodynamic quantity, namely the energy density, is calculated for a neutral scalar field with a time-dependent Hamiltonian. Furthermore, the concept of recasting thermal variations as a variation in the metric is extended to thermal systems in a gravitational field. The Einstein field equations, in the 5-D space-time-temperature, is determined. It is shown that the resulting Ricci scalar can lead to spontaneous symmetry breaking, leading to the Higgs mechanism. In essence, the asymmetry in the distribution of temperature in space-time can translate to spontaneous symmetry breaking of particle fields, in a very strong gravitational field.

Spontaneous Supersymmetry Breaking in Inhomogeneous Supersymmetric Field Theories and BPS Vacua

Abstract:We study spontaneous supersymmetry breaking in inhomogeneous extensions of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric field theory models in 4-dimensions. The ${\cal N}=1$ Abelian Higgs model with the inhomogeneous mass parameter and the FI coefficient that are dependent on spatial coordinates, as well as the O'Raifeartaigh model with all its parameters being dependent on spatial coordinates, are studied in detail. In the presence of inhomogeneous parameters, half supersymmetry can be preserved by adding appropriate inhomogeneous deformations to the original Lagrangians. The inhomogeneous deformations often break the R-symmetry explicitly. In cases where the inhomogeneous deformations do not break the R-symmetry explicitly, we demonstrate that spontaneous breaking of the R-symmetry is infeasible. We argue that those models can not be spontaneous supersymmetry breaking models, according to the Nelson-Seiberg argument. We comment on this issue in the context of a generic ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric model as well.

Abstract:We consider a Yang-Mills type gauge theory of gravity based on the conformal group SO(4,2) coupled to a conformally invariant real scalar field. The goal is to generate fundamental dimensional constants via spontaneous breakdown of the conformal symmetry. In the absence of other matter couplings the resulting theory resembles Weyl-Einstein gravity, {with the Newton constant given by the square of the (constant) vacuum expectation value of the scalar, the cosmological constant determined by the quartic coupling constant of the scalar field and the Weyl to Einstein transition scale determined by the Yang-Mills coupling constant.} The emergent theory in the long-wave-length limit is Einstein gravity with cosmological constant. As an illustrative example we present an exact spherically symmetric cosmological solution with perfect fluid energy-momentum tensor that reduces to $\Lambda$FRW in the long-wavelength limit.

Abstract:A bstract We study spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking and the Higgs mechanism in nonlocal field theories. Motivated by the level truncated action of string field theory, we consider a class of nonlocal field theories with an exponential factor of the d’Alembertian attached to the kinetic and mass terms. Modifications of this kind are known to make mild the UV behavior of loop diagrams and thus have been studied not only in the context of string theory but also as an alternative approach to quantum gravity. In this paper we argue that such a nonlocal theory potentially includes a ghost mode near the nonlocal scale in the particle spectrum of the symmetry broken phase. This is in sharp contrast to local field theories and would be an obstruction to making a simple nonlocal model a UV complete theory. We then discuss a possible way out by studying nonlocal theories with extra symmetries such as gauge symmetries in higher spacetime dimensions.

Hairy Black Holes by Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking

Abstract:We study hairy black hole solutions in Einstein(--Maxwell)--scalar--Gauss--Bonnet theory. The scalar coupling function includes quadratic and quartic terms, so the gravitational action has a U(1) symmetry. We argued that when the effective mass of the scalar field is at the critical value, the non-hairy black holes transform into hairy black holes in a symmetry-broken vacuum via spontaneous symmetry breaking. These hairy black holes are stable under scalar perturbations, and the Goldstone bosons are trivial. Moreover, we found that the spontaneous symmetry breaking associated with local U(1) is unlikely to occur in this theory.

Abstract:We discuss spontaneous symmetry breakdown (SSB) of both global and local scale symmetries in scalar-tensor gravity with two scalar fields, one of which couples nonminimally to scalar curvature while the other is a normal scalar field. In case of a global scale symmetry, by moving from the Jordan frame to the Einstein frame, a normal scalar field becomes massive while the dilaton remains massless after the SSB. In case of a local scale symmetry, we take a gauge fixing condition for the local scale invariance, $a R + b \phi^2 = k$, which was found in our previous study of a Weyl's quadratic gravity. Together with locally scale invariant potential terms in a classical action, this gauge condition generates a Higgs potential whose vacuum expectation value (VEV) produces the Einstein-Hilbert action with an $R^2$ term in the lowest level of approximation. One interesting aspect in this model is that a massless Nambu-Goldstone boson associated with a scale invariance is absorbed into the metric tensor field and consequently an $R^2$ term is induced in the action.
Symmetries and Conservation Laws in Horava Gravity

Abstract:Horava gravity has been proposed as a renormalizable quantum gravity without the ghost problem through anisotropic scaling dimensions which break Lorentz symmetry in UV. In the Hamiltonian formalism, due to the Lorentz-violating terms, the constraint structure looks quite different from that of general relativity (GR) but we have recently found that "there exists the case where we can recover the same number of degrees of freedom as in GR", in a rather general set-up. In this paper, we study its Lagrangian perspectives and examine the full diffeomorphism (Diff) symmetry and its associated conservation laws in Horava gravity. Surprisingly, we find that the full Diff symmetry in the action can also be recovered when a certain condition, called "super-condition", which super-selects the Lorentz-symmetric sector in Horava gravity, is satisfied. This indicates that the broken Lorentz symmetry, known as "foliation-preserving" Diff, is just an "apparent" symmetry of the Horava gravity action and rather its "full action symmetry can be as large as the Diff in GR ". The super-condition exactly corresponds to the tertiary constraint in Hamiltonian formalism which is the second-class constraint and provides a non-trivial realization of the Lorentz symmetry otherwise being absent apparently. From the recovered Lorentz symmetry in the action, we obtain the conservation laws with the Noether currents as in covariant theories. The general formula for the conserved Noether charges reproduces the mass of four-dimensional static black holes with an "arbitrary" cosmological constant in Horava gravity, and is independent of ambiguities associated with the choice of asymptotic boundaries. We also discuss several challenging problems, including its implications to Hamiltonian formalism, black hole thermodynamics, radiations from colliding black holes.

Abstract:We consider a simple scale-invariant action coupling the Higgs field to the metric scalar curvature $R$ and containing an $R^2$ term that exhibits spontaneous breaking of scale invariance and electroweak symmetry. The coefficient of the $R^2$ term in this case determines the self-coupling of the Higgs boson in the Einstein frame, and the scalaron becomes a dilaton weakly coupled to the Higgs boson. Majorana mass terms for right-handed neutrinos can be generated in a scale-invariant manner by using the Higgs-field invariant; in this case, the existing experimental limits on the Higgs-boson total width rule out Majorana mass values in a certain range. The model inherits the naturalness issues of general relativity connected with the smallness of the gravitational and cosmological constants.

Hamiltonian formulation for scalar model of spontaneous spacetime symmetry violation in gravity

Abstract:The focus of this article is on a modification of General Relativity (GR) governed by a dynamical scalar field. The latter is able to acquire a nonzero spacetime-dependent vacuum expectation value, which gives rise to a spontaneous violation of spacetime symmetries. Based on the (3+1) decomposition, we demonstrate how to develop the Hamiltonian formulation for this model. Having done so, our primary interest is to understand how spontaneous spacetime symmetry violation manifests itself in such a setting. In particular, we find that the constraint structure of GR is preserved, although the constraints are clearly modified by the scalar background field. These results emphasize the beauty of spontaneous spacetime symmetry violation in gravity from the viewpoint of the Hamiltonian formulation. They may pose the base for further studies of more sophisticated models of vector and higher-rank tensor fields. Moreover, the description developed can bear fruits when applied within phenomenological quests for spacetime symmetry violation in gravity, in particular, at cosmological scales.

Abstract:In gauge theory, Higgs fields are responsible for spontaneous symmetry breaking. In classical gauge theory on a principal bundle P, a symmetry breaking is defined as the reduction of a structure group of this principal bundle to a subgroup H of exact symmetries. This reduction takes place iff there exists a global section of the quotient bundle P/H. It is a classical Higgs field. A metric gravitational field exemplifies such a Higgs field. We summarize the basic facts on the reduction in principal bundles and geometry of Higgs fields. Our goal is the particular covariant differential in the presence of a Higgs field.

Generalized Symmetry in Dynamical Gravity

Abstract:We explore generalized symmetry in the context of nonlinear dynamical gravity. Our basic strategy is to transcribe known results from Yang-Mills theory directly to gravity via the tetrad formalism, which recasts general relativity as a gauge theory of the local Lorentz group. By analogy, we deduce that gravity exhibits a one-form symmetry implemented by an operator $U_\alpha$ labeled by a center element $\alpha$ of the Lorentz group and associated with a certain area measured in Planck units. The corresponding charged line operator $W_\rho$ is the holonomy in a spin representation $\rho$, which is the gravitational analog of a Wilson loop. The topological linking of $U_\alpha$ and $W_\rho$ has an elegant physical interpretation from classical gravitation: the former materializes an exotic chiral cosmic string defect whose quantized conical deficit angle is measured by the latter. We verify this claim explicitly in an AdS-Schwarzschild black hole background. Notably, our conclusions imply that the standard model exhibits a new symmetry of nature at scales below the lightest neutrino mass. More generally, the absence of global symmetries in quantum gravity suggests that the gravitational one-form symmetry is either gauged or explicitly broken. The latter mandates the existence of fermions. Finally, we comment on generalizations to magnetic higher-form or higher-group gravitational symmetries.

Spontaneous and Explicit Spacetime Symmetry Breaking in Einstein-Cartan Theory with Background Fields

Abstract:Explicit and spontaneous breaking of spacetime symmetry under diffeomorphisms, local translations, and local Lorentz transformations due to the presence of fixed background fields is examined in Einstein-Cartan theory. In particular, the roles of torsion and violation of local translation invariance are highlighted. The nature of the types of background fields that can arise and how they cause spacetime symmetry breaking is discussed. With explicit breaking, potential no-go results are known to exist, which if not evaded lead to inconsistencies between the Bianchi identities, Noether identities, and the equations of motion. These are examined in detail, and the effects of nondynamical backgrounds and explicit breaking on the energy-momentum tensor when torsion is present are discussed as well. Examples illustrating various features of both explicit and spontaneous breaking of local translations are presented and compared to the case of diffeomorphism breaking.

Abstract:A number of approaches to gravitation have much in common with the gauge theories of the standard model of particle physics. In this paper, we develop the Hamiltonian formulation of a class of gravitational theories that may be regarded as spontaneously-broken gauge theories of the complexified Lorentz group $SO(1,3)_C$ with the gravitational field described entirely by a gauge field valued in the Lie algebra of $SO(1,3)_C$ and a `Higgs field' valued in the group's fundamental representation. The theories have one free parameter $\beta$ which appears in a similar role to the inverse of the Barbero-Immirzi parameter of Einstein-Cartan theory. However, contrary to that parameter, it is shown that the number of degrees of freedom crucially depends on the value of $\beta$. For non-zero values of $\beta$, it is shown that three complex degrees of freedom propagate on general backgrounds, and for the specific values $\beta=\pm i$ an extension to General Relativity is recovered in a symmetry-broken regime. For the value $\beta=0$, the theory propagates no local degrees of freedom. A non-zero value of $\beta$ corresponds to the self-dual and anti-self-dual gauge fields appearing asymmetrically in the action, therefore in these models, the existence of gravitational degrees of freedom is tied to chiral asymmetry in the gravitational sector.

Gravity from Symmetry Breaking Phase Transition

Abstract:The paper is devoted to the memory of Dmitry Diakonov. We discuss gravity emerging in the fermionic vacuum as suggested by Diakonov 10 years ago in his paper "Towards lattice-regularized Quantum Gravity". [1] Gravity emerges in the phase transition. The order parameter in this transition is the tetrad field e μ a , which appears as the bilinear composite of the fermionic fields. The similar scenario of the symmetry breaking takes place in the B-phase of superfluid 3 He, where the real part of the spin-triplet p-wave order parameter matrix A ai plays the role of the emerging tetrad (triad). In Diakonov theory this symmetry breaking gives 6 Nambu-Goldstone modes; 6 gauge bosons in the spin-connection fields, which absorb 6 NG modes and become massive gauge bosons; and 6 Higgs fields. In 3 He-B, these Higgs collective modes correspond to 6 massive gravitons, while in the emerging general relativity the Higgs collective modes give rise to two massless gravitational waves.
Spontaneous Generation of a Crystalline Ground State in a Higher Derivative Theory

Abstract:The possibility of Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in momentum space in a generic Lifshitz scalar model - a non-relativistic scalar field theory with higher spatial derivative terms - has been studied. We show that the minimum energy state, the ground state, has a lattice structure, where the translation invariance of the continuum theory is reduced to a discrete translation symmetry. The scale of translation symmetry breaking (or induced lattice spacing) is proportional to the inverse of the momentum of the condensate particle. The crystalline ground state is stable under excitations below a certain critical velocity. The small fluctuations above the ground state can have a phonon like dispersion under suitable choice of parameters. At the beginning we have discussed the effects of next to nearest neighbour interaction terms in a model of linear triatomic molecule depicted by a linear system of three particles of same mass connected by identical springs. This model is relevant since in the continuum limit the next to nearest neighbour interaction terms generate higher (spatial) derivative wave equation, the main topic of this paper.
