Abstract:Plastics have revolutionized our lives; however, the exponential growth of their usage has led to a global crisis. More sustainable strategies are needed to address this dilemma and transform the plastics economy from a linearity to a circular model. Herein, we systematically summarize the recent progress in renewable energy‐driven plastic conversion strategies, including photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and their integration. By introducing the significant works, the design principles, mechanisms, and system regulations, we decipher and compare the various aspects of plastic conversion. These approaches show high reactivity and selectivity under environmentally benign conditions and provide alternative reaction pathways for plastic conversion. Plastic upcycling as a chemical feedstock can yield value‐added chemicals and fuels, contributing to the establishment of a sustainable and circular economy. Additionally, several innovations in reaction engineering and system designs are presented. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of sustainable energy‐driven plastic conversion technologies are comprehensively discussed.

Abstract:Today, discarded plastics in nature have caused serious "white pollution", however these plastic wastes contain abundant carbon resources that could serve as the feedstock to produce commodities. Because of this, it is requisite to convert these plastic wastes into valuable chemicals. Herein, the state-of-the-art techniques for plastic conversion are divided into two categories, those performed under violent conditions and mild conditions, in which the conversion mechanisms are discussed. The strategies under violent conditions are closer to practical application thanks to their excellent conversion efficiencies, while the strategies under mild conditions are more environmentally friendly, showing enormous development potential in the future. We summarize in detail the pyrolysis, hydropyrolysis, solvolysis and microwave-initiated catalysis for bond cleavage in plastic wastes at temperatures ranging from 448 to 973 K. Also, we overview the photocatalysis, electrocatalysis and biocatalysis for bond cleavage in plastic wastes at near and even normal temperature and pressure. Finally, we present some suggestions and outlooks concerning the improvement of current techniques and in-depth mechanisms of investigation for conversion of plastics into valuable chemicals.

Abstract:Plastic wastes have posed serious threats to the environment, including decrease of soil nutrient effectiveness and agricultural production as well as emerge of ecological instability. Fuel conversion from plastic waste is regarded as a promising strategy for its disposal and energy utilization. Plastic wastes can be converted into target fuels by adjusting cracking of chemical bonds. Currently, numerous technologies regarding fuel conversion from plastic wastes have been reported, including conventional pyrolysis, novel heat treatment and advanced oxidation. However, systematic summary and comparative analysis of different technologies are still scarcely reported. In this review, fuel conversion from plastic wastes was summarized comprehensively, highlighting novel heat treatment and advanced oxidation technologies reported in recent years. Furthermore, the superiority and drawbacks of each technology were analyzed, and future prospects of technology application were proposed. With lower reaction temperature and higher-value fuel, novel heat treatment of plastics is more popular than traditional one. Advanced oxidation can be controlled to convert plastics into fuels under room temperature and pressure, guiding the new normal in energy utilization of plastic wastes. This review aims to provide inspiration for energy utilization of solid waste, addressing the issues of white pollution and energy shortage.

Abstract:Due to the ever-expanding uses of plastics and shortage of rational waste management, plastic wastes have accumulated in the global environment and reached 6,300 million metric tons. Considering the large amount of CO2 and microplastics (MPs) emissions throughout the cradle to grave of plastics, there has been a notable surge in interest regarding the utilization of these carbon-rich wastes as feedstocks for the reclamation of valuable chemicals. Here, state-of-the-art technologies of catalytic plastics conversion driven by heat, light, electricity, and enzyme toward various valuable chemicals are summarized. Selective C–H, C–O, and C–C bond transformations in the plastics conversion are highlighted, which will uncover the reaction pathway and optimize the product selectivity. Innovations in catalysts and catalytic systems for circumventing harsh conditions and constructing low-carbon recycling systems are also discussed. Finally, outlooks for the future development of selective plastics-to-chemicals conversion in contributing toward carbon neutrality and zero plastic wastes are proposed.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The unsuitable disposal of plastic wastes has caused serious environmental pollution, and finding a green manner to address this problem has aroused wide concern. Plastic wastes, especially polyolefin wastes, are rich in carbon and hydrogen, and chemical recycling shows distinct advantages in their conversion into olefins and realizes a closed-loop cycling of plastic wastes. Plastic wastes should be labeled before disposal. The necessity for, and methods of, pretreatment are introduced in this paper and the whole recycling process of polyolefin wastes is also summarized. As the core technology pyrolysis, including thermal, catalytic and solvolysis processes, is introduced in detail due to its potential for future development. We also briefly describe the feasible strategies of pyrolytic oil refining and life cycle assessment of the chemical recycling process. In addition, suggestions and perspectives concerning the industrial improvement of polyolefin chemical recycling are proposed.

Abstract:The imbalance between the extensive production and recycling of plastics has resulted in severe environmental and resource issues. A promising solution to mitigate this issue involves using chemical recycling methods to convert plastic products into high-value aromatic chemicals. However, the complexity of reaction mechanisms and the diverse array of reaction systems in this field hinder the establishment of unified principles. Addressing this challenge, we provide a comprehensive review of the current state of preparing aromatic chemicals from plastic wastes. This review discusses the reaction pathways for polyolefin and polyester plastics in the production of aromatics and summarizes the catalysts’ design and reaction mechanisms. Finally, we offer insights into the future of this field, with particular focus on the catalyst design for C–H activation, anticoking, selectivity of aromatics, and cascade reaction. These novel plastic recycling strategies present new perspectives for the green and sustainable development of society and the environment.

Abstract:Sustainable conversion of plastic waste to mitigate environmental threats and reclaim waste value is important. Ambient-condition photoreforming is practically attractive to convert waste to hydrogen (H2); however, it has poor performance because of mutual constraint between proton reduction and substrate oxidation. Here, we realize a cooperative photoredox using defect-rich chalcogenide nanosheet-coupled photocatalysts, e.g., d-NiPS3/CdS, to give an ultrahigh H2 evolution of ∼40 mmol gcat-1 h-1 and organic acid yield up to 78 μmol within 9 h, together with excellent stability beyond 100 h in photoreforming of commercial waste plastic poly(lactic acid) and poly(ethylene terephthalate). Significantly, these metrics represent one of the most efficient plastic photoreforming reported. In situ ultrafast spectroscopic studies confirm a charge transfer-mediated reaction mechanism in which d-NiPS3 rapidly extracts electrons from CdS to boost H2 evolution, favoring hole-dominated substrate oxidation to improve overall efficiency. This work opens practical avenues for converting plastic waste into fuels and chemicals.

Abstract:The accumulation of plastic waste in the environment has led to a global crisis with severe consequences for wildlife and ecosystems. Upcycling offers a promising solution for reducing plastic waste by converting it into valuable chemicals and fuels. Real-life plastic waste exists as complex mixtures of different types of plastic, which poses a key challenge for efficient upcycling. Here, by using sunlight as the sole energy source, we report a thermocatalytic approach for transforming a plastic waste mixture collected from daily usage into methane and HCl using an earth-abundant Ni-based catalyst. This process successfully converted 1.03 g of a plastic waste mixture, containing five types of polyolefin, polyester and polyvinyl chloride, into 1.08 g of methane (yieldC 98%) and 0.045 g of HCl (yieldCl 91%). Catalyst deactivation caused by chlorine poisoning is prevented through the temperature-ramped process driven by the diurnal sunlight cycle, ensuring sustained catalytic activity over a period of 10 days. Real-life plastic waste exists as complex mixtures, posing a challenge for efficient upcycling. Now a sunlight-powered thermocatalytic process using a Ni-based catalyst converts a plastic mixture into CH4, H2O and HCl. Notably, chlorine poisoning is minimized through temperature modulation driven by the diurnal sunlight cycle.

Abstract:The earth faces a pressing environmental challenge with the annual pollution of millions of tons of plastic waste. This issue is exacerbated by the inherent characteristics of plastics, including their high thermal stability and low biodegradability. In response, the scientific community has dedicated significant efforts to combat plastic pollution and develop environmentally sustainable soft materials. A promising approach is the creation of soft materials that can be efficiently recycled within a closed-loop system, thereby minimizing their chemical impact on the environment. This study introduces polyacylhydrazones as a novel class of soft materials with the potential for closed-loop recycling. Closed-loop polymers are sought after as sustainable materials of the future. Dynamic covalent polymers have the potential to act as closed-loop materials because of their reversible linkages. However, very few materials currently exist. Polyacylhydrazones have been explored as dynamic covalent polymers with multiple uses. Herein we demonstrate the first study that shows their potential as closed-loop materials. We show novel synthetic techniques that produce hydrophobic polyacylhydrazones with unique length and morphology under kinetic control. We demonstrate preliminary potential applications. Finally, we show the facile decom-position of a benzylic hydrazone bond down to monomeric units and extraction-based separation, without the need for chromatography. This work advances our understanding of these innovative materials and validates benzylic polyacylhydrazones as “closed-loop” materials for a more sustainable future.

Abstract:Abstract The accumulation of waste plastics has caused serious environmental issues due to their unbiodegradable nature and hazardous additives. Converting waste plastics to different carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) is a promising approach to minimize plastic pollution and realize advanced manufacturing of CNMs. The reported plastic-derived carbons include carbon filaments (i.e. carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers), graphene, carbon nanosheets, carbon sphere, and porous carbon. In this review, we present the influences of different intrinsic structures of plastics on the pyrolysis intermediates. We also reveal that non-charring plastics are prone to being pyrolyzed into light hydrocarbons while charring plastics are prone to being pyrolyzed into aromatics. Subsequently, light hydrocarbons favor to form graphite while aromatics are inclined to form amorphous carbon during the carbon formation process. In addition, the conversion tendency of different plastics into various morphologies of carbon is concluded. We also discuss other impact factors during the transformation process, including catalysts, temperature, processing duration and templates, and reveal how to obtain different morphological CNMs from plastics. Finally, current technology limitations and perspectives are presented to provide future research directions in effective plastic conversion and advanced CNM synthesis.
