Abstract:In this paper we consider the class of l-bijective C-systems, i.e., C-systems for which the length function is a bijection. The main result of the paper is a construction of an isomorphism between two categories - the category of l-bijective C-systems and the category of Lawvere theories.

Abstract:We show that the category of countable Borel equivalence relations (CBERs) is dually equivalent to the category of countable $\mathcal{L}_{\omega_1\omega}$ theories which admit a one-sorted interpretation of a particular theory we call $\mathcal{T}_\mathsf{LN} \sqcup \mathcal{T}_\mathsf{sep}$ that witnesses embeddability into $2^\mathbb{N}$ and the Lusin--Novikov uniformization theorem. This allows problems about Borel combinatorial structures on CBERs to be translated into syntactic definability problems in $\mathcal{L}_{\omega_1\omega}$, modulo the extra structure provided by $\mathcal{T}_\mathsf{LN} \sqcup \mathcal{T}_\mathsf{sep}$, thereby formalizing a folklore intuition in locally countable Borel combinatorics. We illustrate this with a catalogue of the precise interpretability relations between several standard classes of structures commonly used in Borel combinatorics, such as Feldman--Moore $\omega$-colorings and the Slaman--Steel marker lemma. We also generalize this correspondence to locally countable Borel groupoids and theories interpreting $\mathcal{T}_\mathsf{LN}$, which admit a characterization analogous to that of Hjorth--Kechris for essentially countable isomorphism relations.

Abstract:C-systems were defined by Cartmell as the algebraic structures that correspond exactly to generalised algebraic theories. B-systems were defined by Voevodsky in his quest to formulate and prove an initiality conjecture for type theories. They play a crucial role in Voevodsky's construction of a syntactic C-system from a term monad. In this work, we construct an equivalence between the category of C-systems and the category of B-systems, thus proving a conjecture by Voevodsky. We construct this equivalence as the restriction of an equivalence between more general structures, called CE-systems and E-systems, respectively. To this end, we identify C-systems and B-systems as "stratified" CE-systems and E-systems, respectively; that is, systems whose contexts are built iteratively via context extension, starting from the empty context.

Abstract:We give an elementary description of $2$-categories $\mathbf{Cat}\left(\mathcal{E}\right)$ of internal categories, functors and natural transformations, where $\mathcal{E}$ is a category modelling Lawvere's elementary theory of the category of sets (ETCS). This extends Bourke's characterisation of $2$-categories $\mathbf{Cat}\left(\mathcal{E}\right)$ where $\mathcal{E}$ has pullbacks to take account for the extra properties in ETCS, and Lawvere's characterisation of the (one dimensional) category of small categories to take account of the two-dimensional structure. Important two-dimensional concepts which we introduce include $2$-well-pointedness, full-subobject classifiers, and the categorified axiom of choice. Along the way, we show how generating families (resp. orthogonal factorisation systems) on $\mathcal{E}$ give rise to generating families (resp. orthogonal factorisation systems) on $\mathbf{Cat}\left(\mathcal{E}\right)_{1}$, results which we believe are of independent interest.

Categorifying computable reducibilities

Abstract:This paper presents categorical formulations of Turing, Medvedev, Muchnik, and Weihrauch reducibilities in Computability Theory, utilizing Lawvere doctrines. While the first notions lend themselves to a smooth categorical presentation, essentially dualizing the traditional idea of realizability doctrines, Weihrauch reducibility and its extensions to represented and multi-represented spaces require a separate investigation. Our abstract analysis of these concepts highlights a shared characteristic among all these reducibilities. Specifically, we demonstrate that all these doctrines stemming from computability concepts can be proven to be instances of completions of quantifiers for doctrines, analogous to what occurs for doctrines for realizability. As a corollary of these results, we will be able to formally compare Weihrauch reducibility with the dialectica doctrine constructed from a doctrine representing Turing degrees.

Categorified Open Topological Field Theories

Abstract:In this short note, we classify linear categorified open topological field theories in dimension two by pivotal Grothendieck-Verdier categories. In combination with recently developed string-net techniques, this leads to a new description of the spaces of conformal blocks of Drinfeld centers $Z(\mathcal{C})$ of pivotal finite tensor categories $\mathcal{C}$ in terms of the modular envelope of the cyclic associative operad. If $\mathcal{C}$ is unimodular, we prove that the space of conformal blocks inherits the structure of a module over the algebra of class functions of $\mathcal{C}$ for every free boundary component. As a further application, we prove that the sewing along a boundary circle for the modular functor for $Z(\mathcal{C})$ can be decomposed into a sewing procedure along an interval and the application of the partial trace. Finally, we construct mapping class group representations from Grothendieck-Verdier categories that are not necessarily rigid and make precise how these generalize existing constructions.

Abstract:Extending the theory of systems, we introduce a theory of Lie semialgebra ``pairs'' which parallels the classical theory of Lie algebras, but with a ``null set'' replacing $0$. A selection of examples is given. These Lie pairs comprise two categories in addition to the universal algebraic definition, one with ``weak Lie morphisms'' preserving null sums, and the other with ``$\preceq$-morphisms'' preserving a surpassing relation $\preceq$ that replaces equality. We provide versions of the PBW (Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt) Theorem in these three categories.

Abstract:Information systems with witnesses have been introduced in [D. Spreen. Generalised information systems capture L-domains. <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1610.02260v2" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1610.02260v2">arXiv:1610.02260v2</a>] as a logic-style representation of L-domains: The category of such information systems with approximable mappings as morphisms is equivalent to the category of L-domains with Scott continuous functions, which is known to be Cartesian closed. In the present paper a direct proof of the Cartesian closure of the category of information systems with witnesses and approximable mapppings is given. As is shown, the collection of approximable mappings between two information systems with witnesses comes with a natural information system structure.

A systematic approach for invariants of C*-algebras

Abstract:We define a categorical framework in which we build a systematic construction that provides generic invariants for C*-algebras. The benefit is significant as we show that any invariant arising this way automatically enjoys nice properties such as continuity, metric on morphisms and a theory of ideals and quotients which naturally encapsulates compatibility diagrams. Consequently, any of these invariants appear as good candidates for the classification of non-simple C*-algebras. Further, it is worth mentioning that most of the existing invariants could be rewritten via this method. As an application, we define an Hausdorffized version of the unitary Cuntz semigroup and explore its potential towards classification results. We pose several open lines of research.

Abstract:We propose a categorial grammar based on classical multiplicative linear logic. This can be seen as an extension of abstract categorial grammars (ACG) and is at least as expressive. However, constituents of {\it linear logic grammars (LLG)} are not abstract ${\lambda}$-terms, but simply tuples of words with labeled endpoints, we call them {\it multiwords}. At least, this gives a concrete and intuitive representation of ACG. A key observation is that the class of multiwords has a fundamental algebraic structure. Namely, multiwords can be organized in a category, very similar to the category of topological cobordisms. This category is symmetric monoidal closed and compact closed and thus is a model of linear $\lambda$-calculus and classical linear logic. We think that this category is interesting on its own right. In particular, it might provide categorical representation for other formalisms. On the other hand, many models of language semantics are based on commutative logic or, more generally, on symmetric monoidal closed categories. But the category of {\it word cobordisms} is a category of language elements, which is itself symmetric monoidal closed and independent of any grammar. Thus, it might prove useful in understanding language semantics as well.

Abstract:We establish the equivalence between Levitt-Ranicki's theory and Brumfiel-Morgan, Madsen-Milgram, Morgan-Sullivan, Rourke-Sullivan, Sullivan's theories. This answers Brumfiel's question on the equivalence. These two theories are fundamental tools to study the existence and uniqueness of $TOP$ bundle reductions for spherical fibrations, which is equivalent to the existence and uniqueness of manifolds in a homotopy type.

Abstract:The consistent systems of idempotents of Meyer and Solleveld allow to construct Serre subcategories of $Rep_R(G)$, the category of smooth representations of a $p$-adic group $G$ with coefficients in $R$. In particular, they were used to construct level 0 decompositions when $R=\overline{\mathbb{Z}}_{\ell}$, $\ell \neq p$, by Dat for $GL_n$ and the author for a more general group. Wang proved in the case of $GL_n$ that the subcategory associated with a system of idempotents is equivalent to a category of coefficient systems on the Bruhat-Tits building. This result was used by Dat to prove an equivalence between an arbitrary level zero block of $GL_n$ and a unipotent block of another group. In this paper, we generalize Wang's equivalence of category to a connected reductive group on a non-archimedean local field.

Abstract:Following ideas of Lawvere and Linton we prove that classical varieties are precisely the exact categories with a varietal generator. This means a strong generator which is abstractly finite and regularly projective. An analogous characterization of varieties of ordered algebras is also presented. We work with order-enriched categories, and introduce the concept of subexact category and subregular projective (corresponding naturally to the ordinary case). Varieties of ordered algebras are precisely the subexact categories with a subvarietal generator. This means a strong generator which is abstractly finite and subregularly projective.

On a general notion of a polynomial identity and codimensions

Abstract:Using the braided version of Lawvere's algebraic theories and Mac Lane's PROPs, we introduce polynomial identities for arbitrary algebraic structures in a braided monoidal category C as well as their codimensions in the case when C is linear over some field. The new cases include coalgebras, bialgebras, Hopf algebras, braided vector spaces, Yetter-Drinfel'd modules, etc. We find bases for polynomial identities and calculate codimensions in some important particular cases.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of weak Lie 2-bialgebra. Roughly, a weak Lie 2-bialgebra is a pair of compatible 2-term L∞-algebra structures on a vector space and its dual. The compatibility condition is described in terms of the big bracket. We prove that (strict) Lie 2-bialgebras are in one–one correspondence with crossed modules of Lie bialgebras.

Abstract:Circuit algebras, introduced by Bar-Natan and the first author, are a generalization of Jones's planar algebras, in which one drops the planarity condition on "connection diagrams". They provide a useful language for the study of virtual and welded tangles in low-dimensional topology. In this note, we present the circuit algebra analogue of the well-known classification of planar algebras as pivotal categories with a self-dual generator. Our main theorem is that there is an equivalence of categories between circuit algebras and the category of linear wheeled props - a type of strict symmetric tensor category with duals that arises in homotopy theory, deformation theory and the Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization formalism.

Abstract:We present a new method of establishing a bijective correspondence - in fact, a lattice isomorphism - between action- and coaction-invariant ideals of C*-algebras and their crossed products by a fixed locally compact group. It is known that such a correspondence exists whenever the group is amenable; our results hold for any locally compact group under a natural form of coaction invariance.

We call such objects {\it word cobordisms}. A key observation is that word cobordisms can be organized in a category, very similar to the familiar category of topological cobordisms. This category is symmetric monoidal closed and compact closed and thus is a model of linear $\lambda$-calculus and classical, as well as intuitionistic linear logic. This allows us using linear logic as a typing system for word cobordisms. At least, this gives a concrete and intuitive representation of ACG. We think, however, that the category of word cobordisms, which has a rich structure and is independent of any grammar, might be interesting on its own right.

Abstract:In this paper,we use the language of categories to describe representation theory of vertex operator algebras.The category of all vertex operator algebras and the category of modules of a vertex operator algebra are discussed.A homomorphism between two vertex operator algebras should preserve the Virasoro vectors,which is equivalent to commuting with the operators L(n) for all n ∈ Z.We expand the morphisms of this category so that morphisms are semi-conformal in the sense that they commute with those L(n) with n ≥ 0.This expansion does not change the classification of problem and makes the category into a tensor category.Thc coset construction becomes more natural in this category and relations between the module categories of vertex operator algebras can be described in terms of Hom-functors.As an application,we also construct the corresponding Jacquet functors.The semi-conformal vertex operator subalgebras plays the role of the Levi subgroups of a reductive group.
