Abstract:Let $\varphi$ be a normal state on the algebra $B(H)$ of all bounded operators on a Hilbert space $H$, $f$ a strictly positive, continuous function on $(0, \infty)$, and let $g$ be a function on $(0, \infty)$ defined by $g(t) = \frac{t}{f(t)}$. We will give characterizations of matrix and operator monotonicity by the following generalized Powers-St\ormer inequality: $$ \varphi(A + B) - \varphi(|A - B|) \leq 2\varphi(f(A)^1/2g(B)f(A)^1/2), $$ whenever $A, B$ are positive invertible operators in $B(H).$

Abstract:We give new characterizations for matrix monotonicity and convexity of fixed order which connects previous characterizations by Loewner, Dobsch, Donoghue, Kraus and Bendat--Sherman. The ideas introduced are then used to characterize matrix monotone functions of arbitrary order on general subsets of the real line.

Abstract:Let $(X,\tau_X)$ and $(Y,\tau_Y)$ be locally convex spaces, $c(X)$ and $c(Y)$ the $X$-valued and $Y$-valued convergent sequence spaces, respectively, $A_{ij} \in L(X,Y)$ and $A=(A_{ij})$ an operator-valued infinite matrix. In this paper, we characterize the matrix $A=(A_{ij})$ which transforms $c(X)$ into $c(Y)$. As its applications, we introduce the chi function $\chi$ on locally convex spaces, and show that a conservative matrix is conull if and only if $\chi$ (A)=0$.

Abstract:Several aspects of the interplay between monotone operator theory and convex optimization are presented. The crucial role played by monotone operators in the analysis and the numerical solution of convex minimization problems is emphasized. We review the properties of subdifferentials as maximally monotone operators and, in tandem, investigate those of proximity operators as resolvents. In particular, we study new transformations which map proximity operators to proximity operators, and establish connections with self-dual classes of firmly nonexpansive operators. In addition, new insights and developments are proposed on the algorithmic front.

Abstract:In this paper, we study operator mean inequalities for the weighted arithmetic, geometric, and harmonic means. We give a slight modification of Audenaert's result to show the relation between Kwong functions and operator monotone functions. Operator mean inequalities provide some analogs of the geometric concavity property for Kwong functions, operator convex, and operator monotone functions. Moreover, we give our points across by way of some examples which show the usage of our main results.

Abstract:In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the boundedness of the multidimensional Hausdorff operator on weighted Lebesgue spaces. In particular, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the boundedness of special type of the multidimensional Hausdorff operator on weighted Lebesgue spaces for monotone radial weight functions. Also, we get similar results for important operators of harmonic analysis which are special cases of the multidimensional Hausdorff operator. The results are illustrated by a number of examples.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to establishing relationships between global and local monotonicity, as well as their maximality versions, for single-valued and set-valued mappings between finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional spaces. We first show that for single-valued operators with convex domains in locally convex topological spaces, their continuity ensures that their global monotonicity agrees with the local one around any point of the graph. This also holds for set-valued mappings defined on the real line under a certain connectedness condition. The situation is different for set-valued operators in multidimensional spaces as demonstrated by an example of locally monotone operator on the plane that is not globally monotone. Finally, we invoke coderivative criteria from variational analysis to characterize both global and local maximal monotonicity of set-valued operators in Hilbert spaces to verify the equivalence between these monotonicity properties under the closed-graph and global hypomonotonicity assumptions.

Abstract:An operator mean is a binary operation assigned to each pair of positive operators satisfying monotonicity, continuity from above, the transformer inequality and the fixed-point property. It is well known that there are one-to-one correspondences between operator means, operator monotone functions and Borel measures. In this paper, we provide various characterizations for the concepts of positivity, betweenness and strictness of operator means in terms of operator monotone functions, Borel measures and certain operator equations.

Abstract:In this paper we present equivalence results for several types of unbounded operator functions. A generalization of the concept equivalence after extension is introduced and used to prove equivalence and linearization for classes of unbounded operator functions. Further, we deduce methods of finding equivalences to operator matrix functions that utilizes equivalences of the entries. Finally, a method of finding equivalences and linearizations to a general case of operator matrix polynomials is presented.
