Abstract:We present the characterisation of three Cryogenic Sapphire Oscillators using the three-corner-hat method. Easily implemented with commercial components and instruments, this method reveals itself very useful to analyse the frequency stability limitations of these state-of-the-art ultra-stable oscillators. The best unit presents a fractional frequency stability better than 5e-16 at 1 s and below 2e-16 for integration times less than 5,000s.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the problem of characterizing the frequency stability of Cryogenic Sapphire Oscillators (CSOs) in a very short time (integration times τ = 1...10,000 s). Specifically, the authors used the three - corner - hat method to analyze the individual short - term frequency stability of three CSOs. This method can reveal the limiting factors of the frequency stability of these state - of - the - art ultrastable oscillators. Through this method, the researchers found that the best CSO has a fractional frequency stability better than \(5\times10^{-16}\) within 1 second and lower than \(2\times10^{-16}\) within \(τ < 5,000\) seconds. The main contributions of the paper are as follows: 1. **Method verification**: It shows how to use commercial components and instruments to implement the three - corner - hat method to analyze the frequency stability of CSOs. 2. **Performance evaluation**: It provides detailed performance data of three CSOs, especially their frequency stability on different time scales. 3. **Optimization suggestions**: By comparing different CSOs, it points out possible optimization directions, such as temperature control and the design of thermal systems. Through these studies, the paper provides important experimental evidence and technical guidance for improving the frequency stability of CSOs.
