Abstract:The Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) is a large scientific project initiated and hosted by China, fostered through extensive collaboration with international partners. The complex comprises four accelerators: a 30 GeV Linac, a 1.1 GeV Damping Ring, a Booster capable of achieving energies up to 180 GeV, and a Collider operating at varying energy modes (Z, W, H, and ttbar). The Linac and Damping Ring are situated on the surface, while the Booster and Collider are housed in a 100 km circumference underground tunnel, strategically accommodating future expansion with provisions for a Super Proton Proton Collider (SPPC). The CEPC primarily serves as a Higgs factory. In its baseline design with synchrotron radiation (SR) power of 30 MW per beam, it can achieve a luminosity of 5e34 /cm^2/s^1, resulting in an integrated luminosity of 13 /ab for two interaction points over a decade, producing 2.6 million Higgs bosons. Increasing the SR power to 50 MW per beam expands the CEPC's capability to generate 4.3 million Higgs bosons, facilitating precise measurements of Higgs coupling at sub-percent levels, exceeding the precision expected from the HL-LHC by an order of magnitude. This Technical Design Report (TDR) follows the Preliminary Conceptual Design Report (Pre-CDR, 2015) and the Conceptual Design Report (CDR, 2018), comprehensively detailing the machine's layout and performance, physical design and analysis, technical systems design, R&D and prototyping efforts, and associated civil engineering aspects. Additionally, it includes a cost estimate and a preliminary construction timeline, establishing a framework for forthcoming engineering design phase and site selection procedures. Construction is anticipated to begin around 2027-2028, pending government approval, with an estimated duration of 8 years. The commencement of experiments could potentially initiate in the mid-2030s.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we provide a summary of accelerator design and the key challenges of the CEPC accelerator, both of which are laid out in detail in the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) released in November 2018. We also outline future directions and challenges. In the Addendum, we briefly describe the planning and the international organization of the CEPC. The next step for the CEPC team is to perform detailed technical design studies. Effective international collaboration would be crucial at this stage. This submission for consideration by the ESPP is part of our dedicated effort in seeking international collaboration and support.

Abstract:The Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) is a large international scientific project initiated and hosted by China. It is located in a 100-km circumference underground tunnel. The accelerator complex consists of a linear accelerator (Linac), a damping ring (DR), the Booster, the Collider and several transport lines. In the tunnel, space is reserved for a future pp collider, SPPC. The CEPC center-of-mass energy is 240 GeV, and at that collision energy will serve as a Higgs factory. The design also allows operation at 91 GeV for a Z factory and at 160 GeV for a W factory. The heart of the CEPC is a double-ring collider. It has two interaction points where are located large detectors. The Booster is in the same tunnel above the Collider. It is a synchrotron with a 10 GeV injection energy and extraction energy equal to the beam collision energy. The repetition cycle is 10 seconds. Top-up injection will be used to maintain constant luminosity. The 10 GeV Linac, injector to the Booster, built at ground level, accelerates both electrons and positrons. A 1.1 GeV damping ring reduces the positron emittance. Transport lines made of permanent magnets connect the Linac to the Booster. In addition to particle physics, the Collider can operate simultaneously as a powerful synchrotron radiation (SR) light source. It will extend the usable SR spectrum into an unprecedented energy and brightness range. Two gamma-ray beamlines are included in the design. Prior to the construction will be a five-year R&D period (2018-2022). Construction is expected to start in ~2022 and be completed in ~2030. This report is a summary of work accomplished during the past several years by hundreds of scientists and engineers at home and abroad. The current volume, Volume I, is on the accelerators. A separate volume, Volume II, will be on physics and the detectors.

Abstract:CEPC is a 100-km double-ring circular electron–positron collider operating at 90–240 GeV center-of-mass energy of Z -pole, WW -pair production threshold and Higgs resonance. The conceptual design report (CDR) of CEPC has been published as an important step to move the project forward. The superconducting RF (SRF) system is one of the most important and challenging accelerator systems due to the wide range of beam energy and current. In this paper, the layout, parameters and configuration of the superconducting RF system for the CEPC collider ring will be introduced. Issues of beam cavity interactions including transient beam loading and coupled-bunch instabilities of accelerating mode are discussed.

Abstract:The discovery of the Higgs boson at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of CERN in July 2012 raised new opportunities for large-scale accelerators. The Higgs boson is the heart of the Standard Model (SM) and is at the center of many biggest mysteries.In September 2012, Chinese scientists proposed a 240 GeV Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) as a Higgs Factory, having two large detectors for Higgs studies and other topical researches. The 100 km tunnel of CEPC could also host a Super proton proton Collider (SppC) to reach energies well beyond the LHC. CEPC Conceptual Design Report (CDR) has been released in Nov. 2018, and in this CEPC Accelerator White Paper to Snowmass21 AF3, CEPC Technical Design Report (TDR) status with optimized design and key technology R and D progresses have been reported. The energy range, luminosity, upgrade and staging potentials, power consumption, cost, readiness assessment, timelines, construction and operation plans, etc. are covered.

Abstract:Circular electron-positron collider (CEPC) is a dedi-cated project proposed by China to research the Higgs boson. The collider ring provides e⁺ e⁻ collision at two interaction points (IP). The luminosity for the Higgs mode at the beam energy of 120GeV is 3*10³⁴ cm⁻²s⁻¹ at each IP while the synchrotron radiation (SR) power per beam is 30MW. Furthermore, CEPC is compatible with W and Z experiments, for which the beam ener-gies are 80 GeV and 45.5 GeV respectively. The lumi-nosity at the Z mode is higher than 1.7*10³⁵ cm⁻²s⁻¹ per IP. Top-up operation is available during the data taking of high energy physics. The status of CEPC will be introduced in detail in this paper.

Abstract:The physics potential of the Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) can be significantly strengthened by two detectors with complementary designs. A promising detector approach based on the Silicon Detector (SiD) designed for the International Linear Collider (ILC) is presented. Several simplifications of this detector for the lower energies expected at the CEPC are proposed. A number of cost optimizations of this detector are illustrated using full detector simulations. We show that the proposed changes will enable to reach the physics goals at the CEPC.

Abstract:Following the discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC in 2012, new large colliders are being considered and studied by the international high-energy community to explore the Higgs boson in details and to probe new physics beyond the Standard Model. In China, a two-stage circular collider project, CEPC-SPPC was proposed and is under study. The first stage, CEPC (Circular Electron Positron Collier, a so-called Higgs factory) is focused on the Higgs physics, and the second stage, SPPC (Super Proton-Proton Collider) will be an energy frontier collider and a discovery machine beyond the LHC. The two colliders will share a same tunnel of 100 km in circumference, with a goal of 250 GeV in center-of-mass for CEPC and 75 TeV for SPPC Phase-I and 125–150 TeV for the SPPC ultimate goal. This article presents the design concept of the SPPC and some study results about the key accelerator physics problems and technical issues, which include luminosity optimization, beam collimation, beam-beam effects, longitudinal beam dynamics, high-field magnets and beam screen.

Abstract:As the second stage of the CEPC-SPPC project, SPPC (Super Proton-Proton Collider) aims at exploring new physics beyond the Standard Model. The key design goal for the SPPC accelerator complex is to reach 75 TeV in center of mass energy with a circumference of 100 km for the collider and an injector chain of four accelerators in cascade to support the collider. As an important part of the SPPC conceptual study, the longitudinal beam dynamics was studied systematically, which includes the dynamics in the collider and its complex injector chain. First, the bunch filling scheme of the SPPC complex was designed on the basis of various constraints such as the technical challenges of the kicker magnets, limited extraction energy per injection and so on. Next, the study on the longitudinal dynamics in the collider focused on the RF scheme to meet the requirements for luminosity and mitigate relevant instabilities. A higher harmonic RF system (800 MHz) together with the basic RF system (400 MHz) to form a dual-harmonic RF system was employed to mitigate collective instabilities and increase the luminosity by producing shorter bunches. In addition, the longitudinal matchings between the bunches in the different accelerator stages were studied, with special attention to the space charge effects and the beam loading effect in the two lower energy rings (p-RCS and MSS), which result in an optimization of the RF schemes. A set of self-consistent beam and RF parameters for the SPPC complex was obtained. The collider and the three proton synchrotrons of the injector chain have unprecedented features, thus this study demonstrates how a future proton-proton collider complex looks like.

This document describes the latest CEPC nominal operation scenario and particle yields and updates the corresponding physics potential. A new detector concept is also briefly described. Abstract:A proton-proton collider at center-of-mass energy of more than 70 TeV is the second stage of the CEPC-SPPC program. As proposed, the SPPC injector chain will use a 1.2 GeV p-Linac and three synchrotrons of 10 GeV p-RCS, 180 GeV MSS and 2.1 TeV SS. Peking University is responsible for the preliminary conceptual design of the room temperature part of SPPC p-Linac. This paper is focusing on the beam dynamics studies performed with respect to the 325 MHz RFQ. As the first accelerator structure after the ion source and the front-end of the whole SPPC, RFQ plays an important role in the beam initial transverse focusing and longitudinal bunching. Based on the New Four Section Procedure strategy, as well as the matched and Equipartitioning design method, a 3 MeV RFQ designed by Parmteq code will be introduced. The cavity length of RFQ is 3.6 m and the transmission efficiency is 98%. In this design scheme, the 40 mA proton beam from the 50 keV ion source is accelerated to 3 MeV in 3.8 m length, which achieves a sixty times energy gain. The results of the analyses show that the RFQ design is reliable and meets all the SPPC p-Linac requirements well.

Abstract:As a future Higgs or Z factory, construction of the circular electron positron collider (CEPC) has been proposed to precisely measure Higgs bosons. A particle flow-oriented electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) and a hadronic calorimeter (HCAL) comprise a baseline design for the CEPC calorimetry system. The scintillator-tungsten ECAL (Sc-ECAL) prototype is being developed within the CEPC calorimetry working group. The Sc-ECAL is a sampling calorimeter consisting of alternating absorber layers and high granularity active layers. Each component of the active layer has been studied and optimized from a variety of aspects to meet the design requirements. The complete technological Sc-ECAL prototype will contain 30 layers of ECAL-based unit (EBU) boards alternating with 30 layers of the absorber. The first two layers of the prototype have been developed, and primary commissioning has been performed to validate their performance.

Abstract:In 2012, the Higgs boson was successfully observed at the LHC. Due to the relatively low mass of the Higgs, it is possible to build a Higgs factory using a circular e + e - collider. Consequently, the Circular Electron-Positron Collider (CEPC) was proposed shortly after the observation of the Higgs. After several years of pre-studies, the CEPC study group completed the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) in 2018. Since then, a series of key technology R&D efforts have been carried out, and the accelerator design has been continuously optimized. The accelerator design can meet the scientific objectives by allowing operation at different energies for Higgs/W/Z, and ttbar, with high luminosities. Key technologies required for mass production have been developed, including the high-performance superconducting accelerating cavities and modules, high-efficiency RF power sources, magnets, and vacuum systems, etc,. This paper will present the selected key technology R&D accomplishments and updated accelerator key parameters.

Abstract:The proposed Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) presents several challenges for the vertex detector, including material budget, spatial resolution, readout speed, and power consumption. To address these challenges, a Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (MAPS) prototype called TaichuPix has been developed for the CEPC vertex detector. To evaluate the performance of the TaichuPix-3 prototype, a beam test was conducted at the DESY II TB21 facility. This work presents the analysis results of the offline beam data, including cluster size, spatial resolution, and multiple scattering studies, which indicate the intrinsic resolution of TaichuPix-3 chips is less than 5 mu m and the material budget is measured to be 0.170 +/- 0.018%.

Abstract:The design philosophy, overall performance, safety, and economy of three typical generation III (GIII) pressurized water reactors, EPR, AES2006, and CAP1400, are analyzed comprehensively in this paper. Based on comparison with and the lessons learned from the Fukushima nuclear accident, we forecast a future reactor for China’s commercial nuclear power plant. Moreover, we put forward important technological fields of GIII nuclear power plants to which attention should be paid, including the enhancement of defense in depth, defense against extreme external events, severe accident mitigation, design simplification and standardization, improvement in economic competitiveness, load following capability, and adaptation to climate change.

Abstract:A study group was formed in Beijing in September 2013 to investigate the feasibility of a high energy Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) as a Higgs and/or Z factory, and a subsequent Super proton-proton Collider (SPPC). A provisional organization structure and a management team, consisted mostly of Chinese physicists, were established to guide the initial study [1]. The group aims at establishing an international collaboration on CEPC-SPPC after sufficient progress has been made in China or it has been given government funding for RD Volume 2 describes the CEPC accelerator design and SPPC consideration, and the associated civil engineering [2]. The contents presented are preliminary and are predominately focused on the CEPC. Formal CDR and TDR work will follow.

Abstract:The integration of a scintillator, wavelength-shifting fiber, and silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) has demonstrated superior performance in the K-long and Muon detector (KLM) of the Belle II experiment. This study outlines our research and development (R&D) initiatives aimed at harnessing similar detection technologies, incorporating a novel scintillator and SiPM, for potential use in a muon detector for the proposed Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) experiment. Our R&D activities have been focused on evaluating the efficacy of a newly developed 150 cm-long scintillator, alongside the NDL SiPM featuring a sensitive area of 3 mm×3 mm, or the Hamamatsu MPPC with a 1.3 mm× 1.3 mm sensitive surface. The project also includes the fabrication of a detector strip and the implementation of techniques designed to optimize light collection efficiency. Cosmic ray testing has shown that both NDL SiPMs and MPPCs are capable of highly efficient photon collection, achieving efficiencies significantly exceeding 90% when employing a threshold of 8 photoelectrons. Additionally, the time resolution for detecting events at the distant end of a scintillator strip has been measured to be better than 1.7 ns. The remarkable performance observed lays the foundation for advancing R&D including prototype modules aiming for reference Technical Design Report of CEPC detector recently.

Abstract:In order to meet the requirements of the Circular Electron Positron Collider(CEPC), a 650-MHz 2-cell superconducting cavity was proposed and designed. In this study, we show the progress in the cavity design for the CEPC. The radio frequency and mechanical designs are ready for the first design version, called CEPC-V1. A cryomodule, which consists of two 650-MHz 2-cell cavities, was scheduled the last year. Therefore, prototypes of the 2-cell cavity based on this design were fabricated and tested the following year. The vertical test results show that multipacting(MP) exists from 10 to 19 MV/m. This will increase the operational risk of the CEPC, while the continuous-wave operation for the 650-MHz cavity is 19.7 MV/m. Two trapped modes were also found, which exist because of the identical half-cell design. Therefore, a few improvements regarding MP and more efficient extraction of higher-order mode power are discussed. A new type of cavity design, called CEPC-V2, is also discussed in this paper.

Abstract:The discovery of a SM Higgs boson at the LHC brought about great opportunity to investigate the feasibility of a Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) operating at center-of-mass energy of $\sim 240$ GeV, as a Higgs factory, with designed luminosity of about $2\times 10^{34}cm^{-2}s^{-1}$. The CEPC provides a much cleaner collision environment than the LHC, it is ideally suited for studying the properties of Higgs boson with greater precision. Another advantage of the CEPC over the LHC is that the Higgs boson can be detected through the recoil mass method by only reconstructing Z boson decay without examining the Higgs decays. In Concept Design Report(CDR), the circumference of CEPC is 100km, with two interaction points available for exploring different detector design scenarios and technologies. The baseline design of CEPC detector is an ILD-like concept, with a superconducting solenoid of 3.0 Tesla surrounding the inner silicon detector, TPC tracker detector and the calorimetry system. Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) have been extensively studied and used in many fields, especially in particle physics experiments, including STAR and ALICE. The TPC detector will operate in continuous mode on the circular machine. To fulfill the physics goals of the future circular collider and meet Higgs/$Z$ run, a TPC with excellent performance is required. We have proposed and investigated the ions controlling performance of a novel configuration detector module. The aim of this study is to suppress ion backflow ($IBF$) continually. In this paper, some update results of the feasibility and limitation on TPC detector technology R$\&$D will be given using the hybrid gaseous detector module.

Abstract:The design and optimization of the Electromagnetic Calorimeter (ECAL) are crucial for the Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) project, a proposed future Higgs/Z factory. Following the reference design of the International Large Detector (ILD), a set of silicon-tungsten sampling ECAL geometries are implemented into the Geant4 simulation, whose performance is then scanned using Arbor algorithm. At single particle level, the photon energy response at different ECAL longitudinal structures is analyzed. At bi-particle sample, the separation performance with different ECAL transverse cell sizes is investigated and parametrized. The overall performance is characterized by a set of physics benchmarks, including $\nu\nu H$ events where Higgs boson decays into a pair of photons (EM objects) or gluons (jets) and $Z\to\tau^+\tau^-$ events. Based on these results, we proposed an optimized ECAL geometry for the CEPC project.
