Abstract:An unknotting operation is a local change on knot diagrams. Any knot diagram can be transformed into a trivial unknot diagram by a series of unknotting operations plus some Reidemeister moves. Unknotting operations have significant importance in knot theory; they are used to study the complexity of knots and invariants of knots. Unknotting operations are also important in biology, chemistry, and physics to study the sophisticated entanglements of strings, organic compounds, and DNA. In this paper, we introduced a new unknotting operation called the diagonal move for classical and welded knots. We show that the crossing change, Delta-move, Sharp-move, Gamma-move, n-gon move, pass move, and 4-move can be realized by a sequence of diagonal moves. We also define the distance induced by the diagonal move and study its properties.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce an equivalence relation on the set of local moves and classify local moves, called the extended $ST$-moves, up to the equivalence. Moreover, by inducing a binary relation on the set of equivalence classes of local moves, we show that an extended $ST$-move realizes the crossing change or the $SH(2)$-move. In addition, for any oriented knot and two extended $ST$-moves, we disscus the magnitude relation between the unknotting numbers of the knot via the moves, and show that there is an extended $ST$-move except $SH$-moves so that the knot can be transformed into the trivial knot by the single extended $ST$-move. Finally, we provide some examples of $ST$-moves with the binary relation.

Abstract:We study virtualized Delta, sharp, and pass moves for oriented virtual links, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for two oriented virtual links to be related by the local moves. In particular, they are unknotting operations for oriented virtual knots. We provide lower bounds for the unknotting numbers and prove that they are best possible.

Abstract:We study a local twist move on welded knots that is an analog of the virtualization move on virtual knots. Since this move is an unknotting operation we define an invariant, unknotting twist number, for welded knots. We relate the unknotting twist number with warping degree and welded unknotting number, and establish a lower bound on the twist number using Alexander quandle coloring. We also study the Gordian distance between welded knots by twist move and define the corresponding Gordian complex.

Abstract:A crossing in a knot is nugatory if changing the crossing does not change the knot type. Using an invariant of certain types of closed 3-braid diagrams, we show that if a closed 3-braid contains a nugatory crossing then its braid index is one or two. This proves a special case of a conjecture on nugatory crossings due to Xiao-Song Lin.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of wen knots, and prove that the set of wen knots is a proper subset of the set of extended welded knots. Furthermore we prove that the complementary subset consists of welded knots up to horizontal mirror reflections. This allow us to characterise completely extended welded knots by the parity of their number of wens, that we can always reduce to 0 or 1.

Abstract:The theory of welded and extended welded knots is a generalization of classical knot theory. Welded (resp. extended welded) knot diagrams include virtual crossings (resp. virtual crossings and wen marks) and are equivalent under an extended set of Reidemeister-type moves. We present a new class of invariants for welded and extended welded knots and links using a multi-skein relation, following Z. Yang's approach for virtual knots. Using this skein-theoretic approach, we find sufficient conditions on the coefficients to obtain invariance under the extended Reidemeister moves appropriate to welded and extended welded links.

Abstract:We introduce a local deformation called the virtualized $\Delta$-move for virtual knots and links. We prove that the virtualized $\Delta$-move is an unknotting operation for virtual knots. Furthermore we give a necessary and sufficient condition for two virtual links to be related by a finite sequence of virtualized $\Delta$-moves.

Abstract:We prove that a family of links, which includes all special alternating knots, does not admit non-nugatory crossing changes which preserve the isotopy type of the link. Our proof incorporates a result of Lidman and Moore on crossing changes to knots with $L$-space branched double-covers, as well as tools from Scharlemann and Thompon's proof of the cosmetic crossing conjecture for the unknot.

Abstract:Let K' be a knot that admits no cosmetic crossing changes and let C be a non-trivial, prime, non-cable knot. Then any knot that is a satellite of C with winding number zero and pattern K' admits no cosmetic crossing changes. As a consequence we prove the nugatory crossing conjecture for Whitehead doubles of prime, non-cable knots.

Abstract:Twisting a given knot $K$ about an unknotted circle $c$ a full $n \in \mathbb{N}$ times, we obtain a "twist family" of knots $\{ K_n \}$. Work of Kouno-Motegi-Shibuya implies that for a non-trivial twist family the crossing numbers $\{c(K_n)\}$ of the knots in a twist family grows unboundedly. However potentially this growth is rather slow and may never become monotonic. Nevertheless, based upon the apparent diagrams of a twist family of knots, one expects the growth should eventually be linear. Indeed we conjecture that if $\eta$ is the geometric wrapping number of $K$ about $c$, then the crossing number of $K_n$ grows like $n \eta(\eta-1)$ as $n \to \infty$. To formulate this, we introduce the "stable crossing number" of a twist family of knots and establish the conjecture for (i) coherent twist families where the geometric wrapping and algebraic winding of $K$ about $c$ agree and (ii) twist families with wrapping number $2$ subject to an additional condition. Using the lower bound on a knot's crossing number in terms of its genus via Yamada's braiding algorithm, we bound the stable crossing number from below using the growth of the genera of knots in a twist family. (This also prompts a discussion of the "stable braid index".) As an application, we prove that highly twisted satellite knots in a twist family where the companion is twisted as well satisfy the Satellite Crossing Number Conjecture.

Abstract:This paper investigates the relationship between the signature and the crossing number of knots and links. We refine existing theorems and provide a comprehensive classification of links with specific properties, particularly those with signatures that deviate by a fixed amount from their crossing numbers. The main results include the identification of all links for which the sum of the signature and crossing number equals 2, which are shown to be closures of positive 3-braids. Additionally, we explore the implications of these findings in the context of band surgeries and their applications to vortex knots and DNA topology.

Abstract:The cosmetic crossing conjecture posits that switching a non-trivial crossing in a knot diagram always changes the knot type. Generalizing work of Balm, Friedl, Kalfagianni and Powell, and of Lidman and Moore, we give an Alexander polynomial condition that obstructs cosmetic crossing changes for knots with $L$-space branched double covers, a family that includes all alternating knots. As an application, we prove the cosmetic crossing conjecture for a five-parameter infinite family of pretzel knots. We also discuss the state of the conjecture for alternating knots with eleven crossings.

Abstract:In this paper we study welded knots and their invariants. We focus on generating examples of non-trivial knotted ribbon tori as the tube of welded knots that are obtained from classical knot diagrams by welding some of the crossings. Non-triviality is shown by determining the fundamental group of the concerned welded knot. Sample examples under consideration are the standard diagrams of the family of $(2,q)$ torus knots and the twist knots. Standard diagrams of knots from Rolfsen's tables with $6$ crossings are also discussed which are not in the family of torus and twist knots.

Abstract:A symmetric union of two knots is a classical construction in knot theory which generalizes connected sum, introduced by Kinoshita and Terasaka in the 1950s. We study this construction for the purpose of finding an infinite family of hyperbolic non-fibered three-bridge knots of constant determinant which satisfy the well-known cosmetic crossing conjecture. This conjecture asserts that the only crossing changes which preserve the isotopy type of a knot are nugatory.

Abstract:We establish a characterization of alternating links in terms of definite spanning surfaces. We apply it to obtain a new proof of Tait's conjecture that reduced alternating diagrams of the same link have the same crossing number and writhe. We also deduce a result of Banks and Hirasawa-Sakuma about Seifert surfaces for special alternating links. The appendix, written by Juhász and Lackenby, applies the characterization to derive an exponential time algorithm for alternating knot recognition.

Abstract:An unknotting operation is a local move such that any knot diagram can be transformed into a diagram of the trivial knot by a finite sequence of these operations plus some Reidemeister moves. It is known that the H(n)-move is an unknotting operation for classical knots and links. In this paper, we extend the classical unknotting operation H(n)-move to virtual knots and links. Virtualization and forbidden move are well-known unknotting operations for virtual knots and links. We also show that virtualization and forbidden move can be realized by a finite sequence of generalized Reidemeister moves and H(n)-moves.
