Abstract:We show that a rectifiable plane arc g has two parallel support lines and a triple of consecutive points g(r), g(s), g(t), r<s<t, so that g(s) lies on one line, while g(r) and g(t) lie on the other. If the arc is simple, such a pair of lines is unique.

Abstract:Given fixed distinct points $A, B, C, D$, we examine properties of the locus of points $X$ for which $(XA, XC)$, $(XB, XD)$ are isogonal. This locus is a cubic curve circumscribing $ABCD$. We characterize all possible such cubics $\mathcal C \in \mathbb R^2$. These properties allow us to present constructions involving these cubics, such as intersections and tangent lines, using straightedge and compass.

Abstract:The operator $\Lambda_{\{2\},\{3\}}$ acting on line arrangements is defined by associating to a line arrangement \mathcal{A}, the line arrangement which is the union of the lines containing exactly three points among the double points of \mathcal{A}. We say that six lines not tangent to a conic form an unassuming arrangement if the singularities of their union are only double points, but the dual line arrangement has six triple points, six 5-points and 27 double points. The moduli space of unassuming arrangements is the union of a point and a line. The image by the operator $\Lambda_{\{2\},\{3\}}$ of an unassuming arrangement is again an unassuming arrangement. We study the dynamics of the operator $\Lambda_{\{2\},\{3\}}$ on these arrangements and we obtain that the periodic arrangements are related to the Ceva arrangements of lines.

Abstract:We prove that, if $q$ is large enough, the set of the $\mathbb{F}_{q^6}$-rational points of the Hermitian curve is a complete $(q+1)$-arc in $\mathrm{PG}(2,\mathbb{F}_{q^6})$, addressing an open case from a recent paper by Korchmáros, Szőnyi and Nagy. An algebraic approach based on the investigation of some algebraic varieties attached to the arc is used.

Abstract:Let X X be a real analytic manifold. A function f : X → R f:X\to \mathbb {R} is called arc-analytic if it is real analytic on each real analytic arc. In real analytic geometry there are many examples of arc-analytic functions that are not real analytic. They appear while studying the arc-symmetric sets and the blow-analytic equivalence. In this paper we show that the non-analyticity locus of an arc-analytic function is arc-symmetric. We also discuss the behavior of the non-analyticity locus under blowings-up. By a result of Bierstone and Milman, an arc-analytic function f : X → R f:X\to \mathbb {R} that satisfies a polynomial equation with real analytic coefficients, can be made analytic, over any relatively compact subset of X X , by a sequence of blowings-up with smooth centers. We show that these centers can be chosen, at each stage of the resolution, inside the non-analyticity loci.

Linearizations of periodic point free distal homeomorphisms on the annulus

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{A}$ be an annulus in the plane $\mathbb R^2$ and $g:\mathbb{A}\rightarrow \mathbb{A}$ be a boundary components preserving homeomorphism which is distal and has no periodic points. In \cite{SXY}, the authors show that there is a continuous decomposition $\mathcal P$ of $\mathbb{A}$ into $g$-invariant circles such that all the restrictions of $g$ on them share a common irrational rotation number (also called the rotation number of $g$) and all these circles are linearly ordered by the inclusion relation on the sets of bounded components of their complements in $\mathbb R^2$. In this note, we show that if the decomposition $\mathcal P$ above has a continuous section, then $g$ can be linearized, that is it is topologically conjugate to a rigid rotation on $\mathbb{A}$. For every irrational number $\alpha\in (0, 1)$, we show the existence of such a distal homeomorphism $g$ on $\mathbb{A}$ that it cannot be linearized and its rotation number is $\alpha$.

Abstract:Let $m$ be a positive integer and $q$ be a prime power. For large finite base fields $\mathbb F_q$, we show that any curve can be used to produce a complete $m$-arc as long as some generic explicit geometric conditions on the curve are verified. To show the effectiveness of our theory, we derive complete $m$-arcs from hyperelliptic curves and from Artin-Schreier curves.

Abstract:We show that if $X$ is an arc-like continuum, then for every point $x \in X$ there is a plane embedding of $X$ in which $x$ is an accessible point. This answers a question posed by Nadler in 1972, which has become known as the Nadler-Quinn problem in continuum theory. Towards this end, we develop the theories of truncations and contour factorizations of interval maps. As a corollary, we answer a question of Mayer from 1982 about inequivalent plane embeddings of indecomposable arc-like continua.

Abstract:We study the set of lines that meet a fixed line and are tangent to two spheres and classify the configurations consisting of a single line and three spheres for which there are infinitely many lines tangent to the three spheres that also meet the given line. All such configurations are degenerate. The path to this result involves the interplay of some beautiful and intricate geometry of real surfaces in 3-space, complex algebraic geometry, explicit computation and graphics.

Abstract:Consider two parallel lines l1 and l2 in R3 . A rail arc is an embedding of an arc in R3 such that one endpoint is on l1 , the other is on l2 , and its interior is disjoint from l1∪l2 . Rail arcs are considered up to rail isotopies, ambient isotopies of R3 with each self-homeomorphism mapping l1 and l2 onto themselves. When the manifolds and maps are taken in the piecewise linear category, these rail arcs are called stick rail arcs. The stick number of a rail arc class is the minimum number of sticks, line segments in a p.l. arc, needed to create a representative. This paper calculates the stick number of rail arcs classes with a crossing number at most 2 and uses a winding number invariant to calculate the stick numbers of infinitely many rail arc classes. Each rail arc class has two canonically associated knot classes, its under and over companions. This paper also introduces the rail stick number of knot classes, the minimum number of sticks needed to create a rail arcs whose under or over companion is the knot class. The rail stick number is calculated for 29 knot classes with crossing number at most 9. The stick number of multi-component rail arcs classes is considered as well as the lattice stick number of rail arcs.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to present a new method of approximation of planar data set using only arcs or segments. The first problem we are trying to solve is the following: the CNC machines can work only with simple curves (arcs or segments, indeed). So, if we have a contour of an object and we want to cut, for example, glass or metal following that profile, we need a continuous curve composed by linear or circular paths only. Moreover, we want to minimize the number of these paths. The second problem is the following: the contour of an object is detected by a specific laser, which collects a discrete data set. The laser detects a good approximation of a point if this point is not a corner of the object. So in many cases our data set will not contain the real corners. Our task is to present a method on how to find these particular points. A third purpose is to study the regularity of the approximating curve, which can be $G^1$ or $C^0$ continuous. The entire method is developed using single arcs, segments and in certain cases biarcs, in order to ensure the smoothness of the final path.

On Distinct Angles in the Plane

Abstract:We prove that if $N$ points lie in convex position in the plane then they determine $N^{1+ 3/23-o(1)}$ distinct angles, provided the points do not lie on a common circle. This is the first super-linear bound on the distinct angles problem that has received recent attention. This is derived from a more general claim that if $N$ points in the convex position in the real plane determine $KN$ distinct angles, then $K=\Omega(N^{1/4})$ or $\Omega(N/K)$ points are co-circular. The proof makes use of the implicit order one can give to points in convex position, recently used by Solymosi. Convex position also allows us to divide our set into two large ordered pieces. We use the squeezing lemma and the level sets of repeated angles to estimate the number of angles formed between these pieces. We obtain the main theorem using Stevens and Warren's convexity versus sum-set bound.

Geometric hyperplanes of the Lie geometry $A_{n,\{1,n\}}(\mathbb{F})$

Abstract:In this paper we investigate hyperplanes of the point-line geometry $\mathit{A}_{n,\{1,n\}}(\mathbb{F})$ of point-hyerplane flags of the projective geometry $\mathrm{PG}(n,\mathbb{F})$. Renouncing a complete classification, which is not yet within our reach, we describe the hyperplanes which arise from the natural embedding of $\mathit{A}_{n,\{1,n\}}(\mathbb{F})$, that is the embedding which yields the adjoint representation of $\mathrm{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{F})$. The information we shall collect on these hyperplanes will allow us to prove that all hyperplanes of $\mathit{A}_{n,\{1,n\}}(\mathbb{F})$ are maximal subspaces of $\mathit{A}_{n,\{1,n\}}(\mathbb{F})$. Hyperplanes of $\mathit{A}_{n,\{1,n\}}(\mathbb{F})$ can also be contructed starting from suitable line-spreads of $\mathrm{PG}(n,\mathbb{F})$ (provided that $\mathrm{PG}(n,\mathbb{F})$ admits line-spreads, of course). Explicitly, let $\mathfrak{S}$ be a line-spread of $\mathrm{PG}(n,\mathbb{K})$ satisfying certain conditions to be stated in this paper (which hold for all line-spreads obtained via the most popular constructions). The set of point-hyperplane flags $(p,\mathit{H})$ of $\mathrm{PG}(n,\mathbb{F})$ such that $\mathit{H}$ contains the member of $\mathfrak{S}$ through the point $p$ is a hyperplane of $\mathit{A}_{n,\{1,n\}}(\mathbb{F})$. We call these hyperplanes {\em hyperplanes of spread type}. Many of them arise from the natural embedding. We don't know if this is the case for all of them.

A generalized three lines lemma in Hardy-like spaces

Abstract:In this paper we address the following question: given a holomorphic function with prescribed $L^p(\mathbb{R})$ and $L^q(\mathbb{R})$ norm (with $1\leq p,q \leq \infty$) along two parallel lines in the complex plane, then what is the maximum value that this function can achieve at a given point between these lines. Here we show that this problem is well-posed in suitable Hardy-like spaces on the strip. Moreover, in this setting we completely solve this problem by providing not only an explicit formula for the optimizers but also for the optimal values. In addition, we briefly discuss some applications of these results to interpolation theory and to Lieb-Thirring inequalities.

Abstract:An $(n,r)$-arc in $PG(2,q)$ is a set $B$ of points in $PG(2,q)$ such that each line in $PG(2,q)$ contains at most $r$ elements of $B$ and such that there is at least one line containing exactly $r$ elements of $B$. The value $m_r(2,q)$ denotes the maximal number $n$ of points in the projective geometry $PG(2,q)$ for which an $(n,r)$-arc exists. By explicitly constructing $(n,r)$-arcs using prescribed automorphisms and integer linear programming we obtain some improved lower bounds for $m_r(2,q)$: $m_{10}(2,16)\ge 144$, $m_3(2,25)\ge 39$, $m_{18}(2,25)\ge 418$, $m_9(2,27)\ge 201$, $m_{14}(2,29)\ge 364$, $m_{25}(2,29)\ge 697$, $m_{25}(2,31)\ge 734$. Furthermore, we show by systematically excluding possible automorphisms that putative $(44,5)$-arcs, $(90,9)$-arcs in $PG(2,11)$, and $(39,4)$-arcs in $PG(2,13)$ -- in case of their existence -- are rigid, i.e. they all would only admit the trivial automorphism group of order $1$. In addition, putative $(50,5)$-arcs, $(65,6)$-arcs, $(119,10)$-arcs, $(133,11)$-arcs, and $(146,12)$-arcs in $PG(2,13)$ would be rigid or would admit a unique automorphism group (up to conjugation) of order $2$.
