Abstract:In this note we consider the relationship between the dressing action and the holonomy representation in the context of constant mean curvature surfaces. We characterize dressing elements that preserve the topology of a surface and discuss dressing by simple factors as a means of adding bubbles to a class of non finite type cylinders.

Abstract:We describe the invariants of plane quartic curves -- nonhyperelliptic genus 3 curves in their canonical model -- as determined by Dixmier and Ohno, with application to the classification of curves with given structure. In particular, we determine modular equations for the strata in the moduli space $\Me_3$ of plane quartics which have at least seven hyperflexes, and obtain an computational characterization of curves in these strata.

Abstract:Let C be a complex smooth projective algebraic curve endowed with an action of a finite group G such that the quotient curve has genus at least 3. We prove that if the G-curve C is very general for these properties, then the natural map from the group algebra QG to the algebra of Q-endomorphisms of its Jacobian is an isomorphism. We use this to obtain (topological) properties regarding certain virtual linear representations of a mapping class group. For example, we show that the connected component of the Zariski closure of such a representation acts Q-irreducibly in a G-isogeny space of H^1(C; Q)and with image often a Q-almost simple group.

Abstract:In this paper we study the formal classication of two-dimensional neighborhoods of genus g $\ge$ 2 curves with trivial normal bundle. We first construct formal foliations on such neighborhoods with holonomy vanishing along many loops, then give the formal/analytic classication of neighborhoods equipped with two foliations, and finally put this together to obtain a description of the space of neighborhoods up to formal equivalence.

Curve counting on abelian surfaces and threefolds

Abstract:We study the enumerative geometry of algebraic curves on abelian surfaces and threefolds. In the abelian surface case, the theory is parallel to the well-developed study of the reduced Gromov-Witten theory of K3 surfaces. We prove complete results in all genera for primitive classes. The generating series are quasimodular forms of pure weight. Conjectures for imprimitive classes are presented. In genus 2, the counts in all classes are proven. Special counts match the Euler characteristic calculations of the moduli spaces of stable pairs on abelian surfaces by Göttsche-Shende. A formula for hyperelliptic curve counting in terms of Jacobi forms is proven (modulo a transversality statement). For abelian threefolds, complete conjectures in terms of Jacobi forms for the generating series of curve counts in primitive classes are presented. The base cases make connections to classical lattice counts of Debarre, Goettsche, and Lange-Sernesi. Further evidence is provided by Donaldson-Thomas partition function computations for abelian threefolds. A multiple cover structure is presented. The abelian threefold conjectures open a new direction in the subject.

Abstract:Given a natural number k and an orientable surface S of finite type, define the k-curve graph to be the graph with vertices corresponding to isotopy classes of essential simple closed curves on S and with edges corresponding to pairs of such curves admitting representatives that intersect at most k times. We prove that the automorphism group of the k-curve graph of a surface S is isomorphic to the extended mapping class group for all k sufficiently small with respect to the Euler characteristic of S. We prove the same result for the so-called systolic complex, a variant of the curve graph whose complete subgraphs encode the intersection patterns for any collection of systoles with respect to a hyperbolic metric. This resolves a conjecture of Schmutz Schaller.

Abstract:In this notes we study complex projective plane curves whose graded module of Jacobian syzygies is generated by its minimal degree component. Examples of such curves include the smooth curves as well as the maximal Tjurina curves. However, this class of curves seems to be surprisingly large. In particular, any line arrangement $\mathcal A$ of $d=2k+1\geq 5 $ lines having only double and triple points is in this class if the number of triple points is $k$ and if they are all situated on a line $L \in \mathcal A$, see Theorem 6.2

Abstract:Let R=K[x,y,z] . A reduced plane curve C=V(f)⊂P2 is free if its associated module of tangent derivations Der(f) is a free R ‐module, or equivalently if the corresponding sheaf TP2(−logC) of vector fields tangent to C splits as a direct sum of line bundles on P2 . In general, free curves are difficult to find, and in this paper, we describe a new method for constructing free curves in P2 . The key tools in our approach are eigenschemes and pencils of curves, combined with an interpretation of Saito's criterion in this context. Previous constructions typically applied only to curves with quasihomogeneous singularities, which is not necessary in our approach. We illustrate our method by constructing large families of free curves.

Abstract:Given a smooth curve of genus 2 embedded in P^(d-2) with a complete linear system of degree d>=6, we list all types of rational normal scrolls arising from linear systems g^1_2 and g^1_3 on C. Furthermore, we give a description of the ideal of such a curve of genus 2 embedded in P^(d-2) as a sum of the ideal of the two-dimensional scroll defined by the unique g^1_2 on C and the ideal of a three-dimensional scroll arising from a g^1_3 on C and not containing the scroll defined by the g^1_2 on C.

Abstract:In this paper we provide a classification of fundamental group elements representing simple closed curves on the punctured Klein bottle, Similar to the Birman-Series classification of curves on the punctured torus[1]. In the process, an explicit description of the mapping class group is given. We then apply this to give a counterexample the simple loop conjecture for representations from the Klein bottle group to PGL(2,R).

Abstract:We explain how we computed equations for all genus 4 curves defined of the field with 2 elements, up-to-isomorphism, and some of the data we obtained. We give descriptions also of nice models for genus 4 curves over characteristic 2 fields, in both the hyperelliptic case and the trigonal case.

Abstract:We give a new characterisation of the unparametrised geodesics, or distinguished curves, for affine, pseudo-Riemannian, conformal, and projective geometry. This is a type of moving incidence relation. The characterisation is used to provide a very general theory and construction of quantities that are necessarily conserved along the curves. The formalism immediately yields explicit formulae for these curve first integrals. The usual role of Killing tensors and conformal Killing tensors is recovered as a special case, but the construction shows that a significantly larger class of equation solutions also yield curve first integrals. In particular any normal solution to an equation from the class of first BGG equations can yield such a conserved quantity. For some equations the condition of normality is not required. For nowhere-null curves in pseudo-Riemannian and conformal geometry additional results are available. We provide a fundamental tractor-valued invariant of such curves and this quantity is parallel if and only if the curve is an unparametrised conformal circle.

On Treibich-Verdier curves

Abstract:We survey some properties of a class of curves lying on certain elliptic ruled surfaces, studied by A. Treibich and J.L. Verdier in connection with elliptic solitons and KP equations. In particular we discuss their Brill-Noether generality, proved by A. Treibich, and we show that they are limits of hyperplane sections of K3 surfaces.

Abstract:We study tropical line arrangements associated to a three-regular graph that we refer to as tropical graph curves. Roughly speaking, the tropical graph curve associated to , whose genus is , is an arrangement of lines in tropical projective space that contains (more precisely, the topological space associated to ) as a deformation retract. We show the existence of tropical graph curves when the underlying graph is a three-regular, three-vertex-connected planar graph. Our method involves explicitly constructing an arrangement of lines in projective space, i.e. a graph curve whose tropicalization yields the corresponding tropical graph curve and in this case, solves a topological version of the tropical lifting problem associated to canonically embedded graph curves. We also show that the set of tropical graph curves that we construct are connected via certain local operations. These local operations are inspired by Steinitz' theorem in polytope theory.

Abstract:Constant cycle curves on a K3 surface $X$ over $\mathbb{C}$ have been introduced by Huybrechts (2014) as curves whose points all define the same class in the Chow group. In this paper we study correspondences $Z \subseteq X\times X$ over $\mathbb{C}$ acting on the group $\mbox{ccc}(X)$ of cycles generated by irreducible constant cycle curves. We construct for any $n\geq 2$ and any very ample line bundle $L$ a locus $Z_n(L)\subseteq X\times X$ of expected dimension $2$, which yields a correspondence that acts on $\mbox{ccc}(X)$, when it has the expected dimension. We provide examples of $Z_n(L)$ for low $n$ and exhibit one correspondence different from $Z_n(L)$ acting on $\mbox{ccc}(X)$.

Central curves on noncommutative surfaces

Abstract:There exists a dictionary between hereditary orders and smooth stacky curves, resp. tame orders of global dimension 2 and Azumaya algebras on smooth stacky surfaces. We extend this dictionary by explaining how the restriction of a tame order to a curve on the underlying surface corresponds to the fiber product of the curve with the stacky surface. By considering "bad" intersections we can start extending the dictionary in the 1-dimensional case to include non-hereditary orders and singular stacky curves. Two applications of these results are a novel description and classification of noncommutative conics in graded Clifford algebras, giving a geometric proof of results of Hu-Matsuno-Mori, and a complete understanding and classification of skew cubics, generalizing the work of Kanazawa for Fermat skew cubics.

Abstract:Suppose X is a (smooth projective irreducible algebraic) curve over a finite field k. Counting the number of points on X over all finite field extensions of k will not determine the curve uniquely. Actually, a famous theorem of Tate implies that two such curves over k have the same zeta function (i.e., the same number of points over all extensions of k) if and only if their corresponding Jacobians are isogenous. We remedy this situation by showing that if, instead of just the zeta function, all Dirichlet L-series of the two curves are equal via an isomorphism of their Dirichlet character groups, then the curves are isomorphic up to "Frobenius twists", i.e., up to automorphisms of the ground field. Because L-series count points on a curve in a "weighted" way, we see that weighted point counting determines a curve. In a sense, the result solves the analogue of the isospectrality problem for curves over finite fields (also know as the "arithmetic equivalence problem"): It states that a curve is determined by "spectral" data, namely, eigenvalues of the Frobenius operator of k acting on the cohomology groups of all ℓ-adic sheaves corresponding to Dirichlet characters. The method of proof is to show that this is equivalent to the respective class field theories of the curves being isomorphic as dynamical systems, in a sense that we make precise.
