Abstract:In this paper we define alternating Kauffman states of links and we characterize when the induced state surface is a fiber. In addition, we give a different proof of a similar theorem of Futer, Kalfagianni and Purcell on homogeneous states.

Abstract:We establish a characterization of alternating links in terms of definite spanning surfaces. We apply it to obtain a new proof of Tait's conjecture that reduced alternating diagrams of the same link have the same crossing number and writhe. We also deduce a result of Banks and Hirasawa-Sakuma about Seifert surfaces for special alternating links. The appendix, written by Juhász and Lackenby, applies the characterization to derive an exponential time algorithm for alternating knot recognition.

Abstract:State surfaces are spanning surfaces of links that are obtained from link diagrams guided by the combinatorics underlying Kauffman's construction of the Jones polynomial via state models. Geometric properties of such surfaces are often dictated by simple link diagrammatic criteria, and the surfaces themselves carry important information about geometric structures of link complements. State surfaces also provide a tool for studying relations between Jones polynomials and topological invariants, such as the crosscap number or invariants coming from geometric structures on link complements (e.g. hyperbolic volume). This article is brief survey on some of the recent applications of state surfaces.

Abstract:We give a topological characterisation of alternating knot exteriors based on the presence of special spanning surfaces. This shows that alternating is a topological property of the knot exterior and not just a property of diagrams, answering an old question of Fox. We also give a characterisation of alternating link exteriors which have marked meridians. We then describe a normal surface algorithm which can decide if a knot is prime and alternating given a triangulation of its exterior as input.

Abstract:It has been known for several decades that classical alternating links in the 3-sphere have nice hyperbolic geometric properties. Recent work generalises such results to give hyperbolic geometry of links with alternating projections onto any surface in very general 3-manifolds. However, the most general results require an orientable projection surface. In this paper, we extend to alternating links on nonorientable projection surfaces. As an application, we study Klein bottly alternating links in prism manifolds, which are a natural generalisation of Adams' toroidally alternating links in lens spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we study alternating links in thickened surfaces in terms of the lattices of integer flows on their Tait graphs. We use this approach to give a short proof of the first two generalised Tait conjectures. We also prove that the flow lattice is an invariant of alternating links in thickened surfaces and is further invariant under disc mutation. For classical links, the flow lattice and $d$-invariants are complete invariants of the mutation class of an alternating link. For links in thickened surfaces, we show that this is no longer the case by finding a stronger mutation invariant, namely the Gordon-Litherland linking form. In particular, we find alternating knots in thickened surfaces which have isometric flow lattices but with non-isomorphic linking forms.

Abstract:Traditionally, alternating links are studied with alternating diagrams on in . In this paper, we consider links which are alternating on higher genus surfaces F in thickened surface . We define what it means for such a link to be right-angled generalized completely realizable (RGCR) and show that this property is equivalent to the link having two totally geodesic checkerboard surfaces, equivalent to each checkerboard surface consisting of one type of polygon, and equivalent to a set of restrictions on the link's alternating projection diagram. We then use these diagram restrictions to classify RGCR links according to the polygons in their checkerboard surfaces, provide a bound on the number of RGCR links for a given surface of genus g , and find a right-angled knot in a thickened surface. Along the way, we answer a question posed by Champanerkar, Kofman, and Purcell about links with alternating projections on the torus.

Primeness of alternating virtual links

Abstract:Using a new tool called lassos, we establish a new correspondence between cellular link {diagrams} on closed surfaces and equivalence classes of virtual link {diagrams}. This is analogous to a well-known correspondence among the links represented by these diagrams, but with a crucial subtlety. We explain how, under these correspondences, the traditional notion of primeness for virtual links is stricter than the one for links in thickened surfaces. We extend a classical result of Menasco by proving that an alternating link in a thickened surface is prime in the stricter sense unless it is ``obviously" composite. (Adams et al and Howie--Purcell previously extended Menasco's result for the other notion of primeness.) We describe, given an alternating virtual link diagram, how to determine by inspection whether the virtual link it represents is prime in either sense.

Abstract:A very useful result concerning flatness in Algebraic Geometry is EGA's ``fiber'' criterion. We propose similar fiber criteria to verify flatness of a module while avoiding ``finiteness'' assumptions. Motivated by a Tannakian viewpoint (where the category of representations comes to the front), we derive applications to the theory of affine and flat group schemes.

The virtual flyping theorem

Abstract:We extend the flyping theorem to alternating links in thickened surfaces and alternating virtual links. The proof of the former result uses work of Boden--Karimi to adapt the author's geometric proof of Tait's 1898 flyping conjecture (first proved in 1993 by Menasco--Thistlethwaite), while the proof of the latter involves a diagrammatic correspondence recently introduced by the author in a related paper. In the process, we also extend a classical result of Gordon--Litherland, establishing an isomorphism between their pairing on a spanning surface and the intersection form on a 4-manifold constructed as a double-branched cover using that surface.

Abstract:An alternating distance is a link invariant that measures how far away a link is from alternating. We study several alternating distances and demonstrate that there exist families of links for which the difference between certain alternating distances is arbitrarily large. We also show that two alternating distances, the alternation number and the alternating genus, are not comparable.

A decomposition theorem for the affine Springer fibers

Abstract:According to Laumon, an affine Springer fiber is homeomorphic to the universal abelian covering of the compactified Jacobian of a spectral curve. We construct equivariant deformations $f_{n}:\overline{\mathcal{P}}_{n}\to \mathcal{B}_{n}$ of the finite abelian coverings of this compactified Jacobian, and decompose the complex $Rf_{n,*}\mathbf{Q}_{\ell}$ as direct sum of intersection complexes. Pass to the limit, we obtain a similar expression for the homology of the affine Springer fibers. A quite surprising consequence is that we can reduce the homology to its $\Lambda^{0}$-invariant subspace. As an application, we get a sheaf-theoretic reformulation of the purity hypothesis of Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson. In an attempt to solve it, we propose a conjecture about the punctural weight of the intermediate extension of a smooth $\ell$-adic sheaf of pure weight.

Abstract:Link equivalence up to isotopy in a 3-space is the problem that lies at the root of knot theory, and is important in 3-dimensional topology and geometry. We consider its restriction to alternating links, given by two alternating diagrams with $n_1$ and $n_2$ crossings, and show that this problem has polynomial algorithm in terms of $max\{n_1, n_2\}$. For the proof, we use Tait flyping conjectures, observations from the work of Lackenby, Menasco, Sundberg and Thistlethwaite on alternating links, and algorithmic complexity of some problems from graph theory and topological graph theory.

On the Alexander polynomial of special alternating links

Abstract:The Alexander polynomial (1928) is the first polynomial invariant of links devised to help distinguish links up to isotopy. In recent work of the authors, Fox's conjecture (1962) -- stating that the absolute values of the coefficients of the Alexander polynomial for any alternating link are unimodal -- was settled for special alternating links. The present paper is a study of the special combinatorial and discrete geometric properties that Alexander polynomials of special alternating links possess along with a generalization to all Eulerian graphs, introduced by Murasugi and Stoimenow (2003). We prove that the Murasugi and Stoimenow generalized Alexander polynomials can be expressed in terms of volumes of root polytopes of unimodular matrices, building on the beautiful works of Li and Postnikov (2013) and Tóthmérész (2022). We conjecture a generalization of Fox's conjecture to the Eulerian graph setting. We also bijectively relate two longstanding combinatorial models for the Alexander polynomials of special alternating links: Crowell's state model (1959) and Kauffman's state model (1982, 2006).

Abstract:For $D$ a reduced alternating surface link diagram, we bound the twist number of $D$ in terms of the coefficients of a polynomial invariant. To this end, we introduce a generalization of the homological Kauffman bracket defined by Krushkal. Combined with work of Futer, Kalfagianni, and Purcell, this yields a bound for the hyperbolic volume of a class of alternating surface links in terms of these coefficients.

Abstract:The Akutsu-Deguchi-Ohtsuki (ADO) invariants are the most studied quantum link invariants coming from a non-semisimple tensor category. We show that, for fibered links in $S^3$, the degree of the ADO invariant is determined by the genus and the top coefficient is a root of unity. More precisely, we prove that the top coefficient is determined by the Hopf invariant of the plane field of $S^3$ associated to the fiber surface. Our proof is based on the genus bounds established in our previous work, together with a theorem of Giroux-Goodman stating that fiber surfaces in the three-sphere can be obtained from a disk by plumbing/deplumbing Hopf bands.

Abstract:We prove that a family of links, which includes all special alternating knots, does not admit non-nugatory crossing changes which preserve the isotopy type of the link. Our proof incorporates a result of Lidman and Moore on crossing changes to knots with $L$-space branched double-covers, as well as tools from Scharlemann and Thompon's proof of the cosmetic crossing conjecture for the unknot.
