Abstract:Let Mn be an immersed umbilic-free hypersurface in the (n + 1)-dimensional unit sphere double-script S signn+1, then M n is associated with a, so-called Möbius metric g, a Möbius second fundamental form B and a Möbius form Φ which are invariants of Mn under the Möbius transformation group of double-script S signn+1. A classical theorem of Möbius geometry states that Mn (n ≥ 3) is in fact characterized by g and B up to Möbius equivalence. A Möbius isoparametric hypersurface is defined by satisfying two conditions: (1) Φ = 0; (2) All the eigenvalues of B with respect to g are constants. Note that Euclidean isoparametric hyper-surfaces are automatically Möbius isoparametric, whereas the latter are Dupin hypersurfaces. In this paper, we prove that a Möbius isoparametric hypersurface in double-script S sign4 is either of parallel Möbius second fundamental form or Möbius equivalent to a tube of constant radius over a standard Veronese embedding of ℝP2 into double-script S sign4. The classification of hypersurfaces in S n+1 (n ≥ 2) with parallel Möbius second fundamental form has been accomplished in our previous paper [6]. The present result is a, counterpart of Pinkall's classification for Dupin hypersurfaces in double-script E sign4 up to Lie equivalence.

The classification of hypersurfaces in S^n+1 (n≥2) with parallel Möbius second fundamental form has been accomplished in our previous paper [7]. The present result is a counterpart of the classification for Dupin hypersurfaces in E^5 up to Lie equivalence obtained by R. Niebergall, T. Cecil and G. R. Jensen.

Abstract:We give a complete classification of isoparametric hypersurfaces in a product space Mκ12×Mκ22 of 2-dimensional space forms for κi∈{−1,0,1} with κ1≠κ2. In fact we prove that any isoparametric hypersurface in such a space has constant product angle function, which enables us to remove the condition of constant principal curvatures from the classification obtained recently by J.B.M. dos Santos and J.P. dos Santos.

Here e i is a local orthonormal basis for I = dx · dx with dual basis θ i , II = ∑ ij h ij θ i ⊗ θ i is the second fundamental form, H = 1 n∑_i h_ii ,ρ^2 = n n - 1( || II ||^2 - nH^2 ) and S is the shape operator of x . It is clear that any conformal image of a (Euclidean) isoparametric hypersurface in S n +1 is a Möbius isoparametric hypersurface, but the converse is not true. In this paper we classify all Möbius isoparametric hypersurfaces in S n +1 with two distinct principal curvatures up to Möbius transformations. By using a theorem of Thorbergsson [1] we also show that the number of distinct principal curvatures of a compact Möbius isoparametric hypersurface embedded in S n +1 can take only the values 2, 3, 4, 6.

Abstract:In this paper, by Nomizu's method and some technical treatment of the asymmetry of the F-Weingarten operator, we obtain a classification of complete anisotropic isoparametric hypersurfaces, i.e., hypersurfaces with constant anisotropic principal curvatures, in Euclidean spaces, which is a generalization of the classical case for isoparametric hypersurfaces in Euclidean spaces. On the other hand, by an example of local anisotropic isoparametric surface constructed by B. Palmer, we find that in general anisotropic isoparametric hypersurfaces have both local and global aspects as in the theory of proper Dupin hypersurfaces, which differs from classical isoparametric hypersurfaces.
Isoparametric hypersurfaces in symmetric spaces of non-compact type and higher rank

Abstract:We construct inhomogeneous isoparametric families of hypersurfaces with non-austere focal set on each symmetric space of non-compact type and rank greater than or equal to 3. If the rank is greater than or equal to 4, there are infinitely many such examples. Our construction yields the first examples of isoparametric families on any Riemannian manifold known to have a non-austere focal set. They can be obtained from a new general extension method of submanifolds from Euclidean spaces to symmetric spaces of non-compact type. This method preserves the mean curvature and isoparametricity, among other geometric properties.

Abstract:Sbrana and Cartan gave local classifications for the set of Euclidean hypersurfaces $M^n\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ which admit another genuine isometric immersions in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ for $n\geq 3$. The main goal of this paper is to extend their classification to higher codimensions. Our main result is a complete description of the moduli space of genuine deformations of generic hypersurfaces of rank $(p+1)$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+p}$ for $p\leq n-2$. As a consequence, we obtain an analogous classification to the ones given by Sbrana and Cartan providing all local isometric immersions in $\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$ of a generic hypersurface $M^n\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ for $n\geq 4$. We also show how the techniques developed here can be used to study conformally flat Euclidean submanifolds.

Abstract:Let $M^n$ be a closed Riemannian manifold on which the integral of the scalar curvature is nonnegative. Suppose $\mathfrak{a}$ is a symmetric $(0,2)$ tensor field whose dual $(1,1)$ tensor $\mathcal{A}$ has $n$ distinct eigenvalues, and $\mathrm{tr}(\mathcal{A}^k)$ are constants for $k=1,\cdots, n-1$. We show that all the eigenvalues of $\mathcal{A}$ are constants, generalizing a theorem of de Almeida and Brito \cite{dB90} to higher dimensions. As a consequence, a closed hypersurface $M^n$ in $S^{n+1}$ is isoparametric if one takes $\mathfrak{a}$ above to be the second fundamental form, giving affirmative evidence to Chern's conjecture.

On the Work of Cartan and Münzner on Isoparametric Hypersurfaces

Abstract:A hypersurface $M^n$ in a real space form ${\bf R}^{n+1}$, $S^{n+1}$, or $H^{n+1}$ is isoparametric if it has constant principal curvatures. This paper is a survey of the fundamental work of Cartan and Münzner on the theory of isoparametric hypersurfaces in real space forms, in particular, spheres. This work is contained in four papers of Cartan published during the period 1938--1940, and two papers of Münzner that were published in preprint form in the early 1970's, and as journal articles in 1980--1981. These papers of Cartan and Münzner have been the foundation of the extensive field of isoparametric hypersurfaces, and they have all been recently translated into English by the author. The paper concludes with a brief survey of the recently completed classification of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres.

Abstract:We conclude the classification of isoparametric (or equivalently, polar) foliations of complex and quaternionic projective spaces. This is done by investigating the projections of certain inhomogeneous isoparametric foliations of the 31-sphere under the respective Hopf fibrations, thereby solving the last remaining open cases.

Abstract:We study isoparametric hypersurfaces, whose principal curvatures are all constant, in the pseudo-Riemannian space forms. In this paper, we investigate three topics.Firstly, according to Petrov's classification theorem, we give a classification of hypersurfaces of index 2 with respect to a pair of a shape operator and a metric. Therefore, we can define types of isoparametric hypersurfaces of index 2 concerning the classification. Secondly, we give several examples of certain types. Thirdly, we show that there exist no isoparametric hypersurfaces of index 2 whose shape operators have complex principal curvatures in certain cases.
