Abstract:Daily-life foldable items, such as popup tents, the curved origami sculptures exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art of New York, overstrained bicycle wheels, released bilayered microrings and strained cyclic macromolecules, are made of rings buckled or folded in tridimensional saddle shapes. Surprisingly, despite their popularity and their technological and artistic importance, the design of such rings remains essentially empirical. Here we study experimentally the tridimensional buckling of rings on folded paper rings, lithographically processed foldable microrings, human-size wood sculptures or closed arcs of Slinky springs. The general shape adopted by these rings can be described by a single continuous parameter, the overcurvature. An analytical model based on the minimization of the energy of overcurved rings reproduces quantitatively their shape and buckling behaviour. The model also provides guidelines on how to efficiently fold rings for the design of space-saving objects.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive study on the mobility and redundancies of an origami in its fully unfolded, partially folded, and fully folded configurations by applying graph and screw theories via Davies' method. It seeks to take advantage of the existing analogies between origami and spherical mechanisms to apply the Davies method in the kinematic analysis of origami. A detailed calculation of the mobility of two origamis is performed, identifying redundant constraints in each configuration. In addition, the singular positions of the origami in each state are explored, providing an in-depth understanding of their behavior under different conditions. These results not only provide a comprehensive insight into origami kinematics, but also have significant implications for the design and application of origami-inspired mechanisms in various fields, ranging from robotics to structural engineering.
Ring Origami Spring Capable of Eversion Morphing

Abstract:Origami structures have been widely used in soft robots, mechanical metamaterials, architectural engineering, and biomedical engineering in recent years, benefiting from their reconfigurable shape morphing and tunable mechanical properties through folding and unfolding. In this work, we construct a new origami structure named ring origami spring (ROS) by alternately folding two perpendicularly arranged paper ribbons of the same size and connecting two ends of them. ROS can achieve an eversion morphing with four stable states, based on which both underwater locomotion and traversing water-air interface have been implemented. Theoretical models for characterizing the eversion morphing during the transition of stable states and the induced locomotion performance of ROS have been developed, and the theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results. The current work provides a new strategy for the design of origami robots, which is potentially applied in exploring complex environments.

Abstract:Abstract Origami structures are often attractive for a broad range of applications in engineering, design, and robotics because of their useful characteristics such as reconfigurable geometry, tunable stiffness, and energy absorption capacity. Although a range of algorithms and software is available for origami design and folding analysis, they are generally isolated from other computational tools. To contribute to filling this research gap, we propose a unified parametric origami design workflow based on grasshopper combined with a multi-objective optimization process. To this end, first, a parametric model for a ring-shaped fourfold origami structure, called the Miura-oRing metastructure, is developed based on appropriate geometric parameters. Its nonlinear folding process is then simulated according to geometric compatibility conditions and given constraints. Simultaneously, modal analysis is iteratively performed, using SAP2000 through C# scripts, to obtain relationships for the structural configuration, mass, and stiffness of the origami structure. Finally, an inverse design process based on a fitting cylindrical annulus is carried out using Octopus, considering the spatial fit, mass, and stiffness of the Miura-oRing. A comparison is made between the obtained results and those of the origami simulator and the physical models to validate the performance of the proposed method. After balancing the three objectives of inverse design, a recommended range of parameters is prescribed for the Miura-oRing for a given set of dimensions. This study provides a workflow that integrates geometry, kinematics, and structural performance, enabling the design of origami structures with desirable geometric, kinematic, and structural characteristics.

Abstract:Origami cores are increasingly recognized as effective structures for energy absorption in sandwich plates. However, as most origami sandwich cores are made of tessellations of orthotropic unit cells, their free edges may hinder the formation of plastic hinges and reduce energy absorption capacity. To eliminate such free edges, in this work, by trimming the popular Miura-ori unit cells to form ring-shaped loops, we create a new origami sandwich plate with improved energy absorption efficiency. We study the energy absorption characteristics of these origami ring cores through a combination of theory, numerical simulations, and experiments. Both simulations and experiments verify that the origami ring cores possess quantized energy absorption capacity, related to the number of additional plastic hinges derived from strong local buckling of origami creases. We develop a theoretical model that effectively captures the formation of plastic hinges and predicts their absorbed energy. In summary, the origami ring cores present a novel and promising sandwich plate design approach, characterized by quantized energy absorption performance. This innovation holds significant potential for diverse engineering applications across sectors such as the aeronautic and marine industries and infrastructure development.

Abstract:<p>Origami‐based designs refer to the application of the ancient art of origami to solve engineering problems of different nature. Despite being implemented at dimensions that range from the nano to the meter scale, origami‐based designs are always defined by the laws that govern their geometrical properties at any scale. It is thus not surprising to notice that the study of their applications has become of cross‐disciplinary interest. This article aims to review recent origami‐based applications in engineering, design methods and tools, with a focus on research outcomes from 2015 to 2020. First, an introduction to origami history, mathematical background and terminology is given. Origami‐based applications in engineering are reviewed largely in the following fields: biomedical engineering, architecture, robotics, space structures, biomimetic engineering, fold‐cores, and metamaterials. Second, design methods, design tools, and related manufacturing constraints are discussed. Finally, the article concludes with open questions and future challenges.</p>

Abstract:Origami and kirigami have emerged as potential tools for the design of mechanical metamaterials whose properties such as curvature, Poisson ratio, and existence of metastable states can be tuned using purely geometric criteria. A major obstacle to exploiting this property is the scarcity of tools to identify and program the flexibility of fold patterns. We exploit a recent connection between spring networks and quantum topological states to design origami with localized folding motions at boundaries and study them both experimentally and theoretically. These folding motions exist due to an underlying topological invariant rather than a local imbalance between constraints and degrees of freedom. We give a simple example of a quasi-1D folding pattern that realizes such topological states. We also demonstrate how to generalize these topological design principles to two dimensions. A striking consequence is that a domain wall between two topologically distinct, mechanically rigid structures is deformable even when constraints locally match the degrees of freedom.

Geometric Mechanics of Curved Crease Origami

Abstract:Folding a sheet of paper along a curve can lead to structures seen in decorative art and utilitarian packing boxes. Here we present a theory for the simplest such structure: an annular circular strip that is folded along a central circular curve to form a three-dimensional buckled structure driven by geometrical frustration. We quantify this shape in terms of the radius of the circle, the dihedral angle of the fold and the mechanical properties of the sheet of paper and the fold itself. When the sheet is isometrically deformed everywhere except along the fold itself, stiff folds result in creases with constant curvature and oscillatory torsion. However, relatively softer folds inherit the broken symmetry of the buckled shape with oscillatory curvature and torsion. Our asymptotic analysis of the isometrically deformed state is corroborated by numerical simulations which allow us to generalize our analysis to study multiply folded structures.

A continuum geometric approach for inverse design of origami structures

Abstract:Miura-Ori, a celebrated origami pattern that facilitates functionality in matter, has found multiple applications in the field of mechanical metamaterials. Modifications of Miura-Ori pattern can produce curved configurations during folding, thereby enhancing its potential functionalities. Thus, a key challenge in designing generalized Miura-Ori structures is to tailor their folding patterns to achieve desired geometries. In this work, we address this inverse-design problem by developing a new continuum framework for the differential geometry of generalized Miura-Ori. By assuming that the perturbation to the classical Miura-Ori is slowly varying in space, we derive analytical relations between geometrical properties and the perturbation field. These relationships are shown to be invertible, allowing us to design complex curved geometries. Our framework enables porting knowledge, methods and tools from continuum theories of matter and differential geometry to the field of origami metamaterials.

On the Elastic Stability of Folded Rings in Circular and Straight States

Abstract:Single-loop elastic rings can be folded into multi-loop equilibrium configurations. In this paper, the stability of several such multi-loop states which are either circular or straight are investigated analytically and illustrated by experimental demonstrations. The analysis ascertains stability by exploring variations of the elastic energy of the rings for admissible deformations in the vicinity of the equilibrium state. The approach employed is the conventional stability analysis for elastic conservative systems which differs from most of the analyses that have been published on this class of problems, as will be illustrated by reproducing and elaborating on several problems in the literature. In addition to providing solutions to two basic problems, the paper analyses and demonstrates the stability of six-sided rings that fold into straight configurations.

Abstract:Origami, the art of paper folding, has long fascinated researchers and designers in its potential to replicate and tap the complexity of nature. In this paper, we pursue the crossing of origami engineering structures and biology, the realm of biologically-inspired origami structures categorized by the two biggest taxonomy kingdoms and DNA origami. Given the diversity of life forms that Earth comprises, we pursue an analysis of biomimetic designs that resemble intricate patterns and functionalities occurring in nature. Our research begins by setting out a taxonomic framework for the classification of origami structures based on biologically important kingdoms. From each of these, we explore the engineering structures inspired by morphological features, behaviors, and ecological adaptations of organisms. We also discuss implications in realms such as sustainability, biomaterials development, and bioinspired robotics. Thus, by parlaying the principles found in nature's design playbook through the art of folding, biologically inspired origami becomes fertile ground for interdisciplinary collaboration and creativity. Through this approach, we aim to inspire readers, researchers, and designers to embark on a journey of discovery in which the boundaries between art, science, and nature are blurred, providing a foundation for innovation to thrive.

Abstract:From a kinematics perspective, a Kresling origami cell couples axial displacement (contraction/expansion) with twist, leading to non-rigid origami behavior. From an energy landscape perspective, the selection of the Kresling origami geometry, together with its fabrication process and material, lead to energy envelopes allowing single or multiple stable states. In this context, this paper explores the Kresling origami mechanics through mathematical modeling integrated with experimental testing. On the theoretical mechanics front, we present a comprehensive model incorporating the representative geometrical parameters of the Kresling origami cell into the corresponding energy function in order to capture its essential mechanical behavior. On the experimental mechanics front, we create two fixtures that demonstrate the ability to control axial displacement (contraction/expansion) and twist independently, without imposing any constraints on the chiral arrangement of individual cells within the Kresling origami array (composed of multiple cells). Finally, we show the coexistence of multiple mechanical and morphological configurations within the same Kresling array by programming its loading modes, i.e., compression or twist. The fundamental nature of this work makes it applicable to several field of engineering, including soft robotics and mechanical computing.

Abstract:We develop recursion equations to describe the three-dimensional shape of a sheet upon which a series of concentric curved folds have been inscribed. In the case of no stretching outside the fold, the three-dimensional shape of a single fold prescribes the shape of the entire origami structure. To better explore these structures, we derive continuum equations, valid in the limit of vanishing spacing between folds, to describe the smooth surface intersecting all the mountain folds. We find that this surface has negative Gaussian curvature with magnitude equal to the square of the fold's torsion. A series of open folds with constant fold angle generate a helicoid.

Abstract:Origami has attracted more and more attention due to its exotic mechanical properties, and the inspired metamaterials are also popular. However, the main focus of current research is on existing origami patterns and properties, although new origami patterns or results that expand on existing origami patterns are gradually emerging. In this paper, we summarize a series of derived structures of the Kresling origami, demonstrating more stable states and richer structural forms. At the same time, a point-searching method is proposed along the ideas of the truss model, which is effective for irregular stable states of these derived structures. On this basis, we create an origami-inspired mechanical metamaterial with foldable property and high load-bearing capacity, fabricate the prototype, and validate its performance through experiments. These works make important contributions for promoting the Kresling origami and origami-inspired metamaterials.

Abstract:Origami, the ancient Japanese art of paper folding, is not only an inspiring technique to create sophisticated shapes, but also a surprisingly powerful method to induce nonlinear mechanical properties. Over the last decade, advances in crease design, mechanics modeling, and scalable fabrication have fostered the rapid emergence of architected origami materials. These materials typically consist of folded origami sheets or modules with intricate 3D geometries, and feature many unique and desirable material properties like auxetics, tunable nonlinear stiffness, multistability, and impact absorption. Rich designs in origami offer great freedom to design the performance of such origami materials, and folding offers a unique opportunity to efficiently fabricate these materials at vastly different sizes. Here, recent studies on the different aspects of origami materials-geometric design, mechanics analysis, achieved properties, and fabrication techniques-are highlighted and the challenges ahead discussed. The synergies between these different aspects will continue to mature and flourish this promising field.

Abstract:Origami has emerged as a powerful mechanism for designing functional foldable and deployable structures. Among various origami patterns, a large class of origami exhibits rotational symmetry, which possesses the advantages of elegant geometric shapes, axisymmetric contraction/expansion, and omnidirectional deployability, etc. Due to these merits, origami with rotational symmetry has found widespread applications in various engineering fields such as foldable emergency shelters, deformable wheels, deployable medical stents, and deployable solar panels. To guide the rational design of origami-based deployable structures and functional devices, numerous works in recent years have been devoted to understanding the geometric designs and mechanical behaviors of rotationally symmetric origami. In this review, we classify origami structures with rotational symmetry into three categories according to the dimensional transitions between their deployed and folded states as three-dimensional to three-dimensional, three-dimensional to two-dimensional, and two-dimensional to two-dimensional. Based on these three categories, we systematically review the geometric designs of their origami patterns and the mechanical behaviors during their folding motions. We summarize the existing theories and numerical methods for analyzing and designing these origami structures. Also, potential directions and future challenges of rotationally symmetric origami mechanics and applications are discussed. This review can provide guidelines for origami with rotational symmetry to achieve more functional applications across a wide range of length scales.

Novel mechanical response of parallelogram-face origami governed by topological characteristics

Abstract:Origami principles are used to create strong, lightweight structures with complex mechanical response. However, identifying the fundamental physical principles that determine a sheet's behavior remains a challenge. We introduce a new analytic theory in which commonly studied origami sheets fall into distinct topological classes that predict sharply varying mechanical behavior, including effective stiffness and smoothness of mechanical response under external loads. Origami sheets with negative Poisson's ratios, such as the Miura ori, have conventional, smooth mechanical response amenable to continuum-based approaches. In contrast, positive Poisson's ratio, as in the Eggbox ori, generates a topological transition to lines of doubly degenerate zero modes that lead to dramatically softer structures with uneven, complex patterns of spatial response. These patterns interact in complicated ways with origami boundary conditions and source terms, leading to rich physical phenomena in experimentally accessible systems. This approach highlights topological mechanics, with deep connections to topologically protected quantum-mechanical systems, as a design principle for controlling the mechanical response of thin, complex sheets.

Abstract:Origami has shown its potential in designing a three-dimensional folded structure from a flat sheet of material. In this paper, we present geometric design methods to construct cylindrical and axisymmetric origami structures that can fit between two given surfaces. Due to the symmetry of the structures, a strip of folds based on the generalized Miura-ori cells is first constructed and then replicated longitudinally/circumferentially to form the cylindrical/axisymmetric origami structures. In both designs, algorithms are presented to ensure that all vertexes are either on or strictly within the region between the target surfaces. The conditions of flat-foldability and developability are fulfilled at the inner vertexes and the designs are rigid-foldable with a single degree-of-freedom. The methods for cylindrical and axisymmetric designs are similar in implementation and of potential in designing origami structures for engineering purposes, such as foldcores, foldable shelters, and meta-materials.
