An Efficient Enumeration of Flat-Foldings : Study on Random Single Vertex Origami

Abstract:This paper deals with themes such as approximate counting/evaluation of the total number of flat-foldings for random origami diagrams, evaluation of the values averaged over various instances, obtaining forcing sets for general origami diagrams, and evaluation of average computational complexity. An approach to the above problems using a physical model and an efficient size reduction method for them is proposed. Using a statistical mechanics model and a numerical method of approximate enumeration based on it, we give the result of approximate enumeration of the total number of flat-foldings of single-vertex origami diagram with random width of angles gathering around the central vertex, and obtain its size dependence for an asymptotic prediction towards the limit of infinite size. In addition, an outlook with respect to the chained determination of local stacking orders of facets caused by the constraint that prohibits the penetration of them is also provided from the viewpoint of organizing the terms included in the physical model. A method to efficiently solve the problem of the determination or enumeration of flat-foldings is discussed based on the above perspectives. This is thought to be closely related to forcing sets.

Abstract:Origami and kirigami have emerged as potential tools for the design of mechanical metamaterials whose properties such as curvature, Poisson ratio, and existence of metastable states can be tuned using purely geometric criteria. A major obstacle to exploiting this property is the scarcity of tools to identify and program the flexibility of fold patterns. We exploit a recent connection between spring networks and quantum topological states to design origami with localized folding motions at boundaries and study them both experimentally and theoretically. These folding motions exist due to an underlying topological invariant rather than a local imbalance between constraints and degrees of freedom. We give a simple example of a quasi-1D folding pattern that realizes such topological states. We also demonstrate how to generalize these topological design principles to two dimensions. A striking consequence is that a domain wall between two topologically distinct, mechanically rigid structures is deformable even when constraints locally match the degrees of freedom.

Abstract:Flat origami refers to the folding of flat, zero-curvature paper such that the finished object lies in a plane. Mathematically, flat origami consists of a continuous, piecewise isometric map $f:P\subseteq\mathbb{R}^2\to\mathbb{R}^2$ along with a layer ordering $\lambda_f:P\times P\to \{-1,1\}$ that tracks which points of $P$ are above/below others when folded. The set of crease lines that a flat origami makes (i.e., the set on which the mapping $f$ is non-differentiable) is called its \textit{crease pattern}. Flat origami mappings and their layer orderings can possess surprisingly intricate structure. For instance, determining whether or not a given straight-line planar graph drawn on $P$ is the crease pattern for some flat origami has been shown to be an NP-complete problem, and this result from 1996 led to numerous explorations in computational aspects of flat origami. In this paper we prove that flat origami, when viewed as a computational device, is Turing complete. We do this by showing that flat origami crease patterns with \textit{optional creases} (creases that might be folded or remain unfolded depending on constraints imposed by other creases or inputs) can be constructed to simulate Rule 110, a one-dimensional cellular automaton that was proven to be Turing complete by Matthew Cook in 2004.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that a generic rational equation of degree $7$ is solvable by 2-fold origami. In particular we show how to septisect an arbitrary angle. This extends the work of Alperin & Lang and Nishimura on 2-fold origami. Furthermore we give exact crease patterns for folding polynomials with Galois groups $A_7$ resp. $PSL_3\mathbb{F}_2$.

Abstract:We demonstrate the existence of a certain genus four origami whose Kontsevich--Zorich monodromy is arithmetic in the sense of Sarnak. The surface is interesting because its Veech group is as large as possible and given by $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)$. When compared to other surfaces with Veech group $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)$ such as the Eierlegendre Wollmichsau and the Ornithorynque, an arithmetic Kontsevich--Zorich monodromy is surprising and indicates that there is little relationship between the Veech group and monodromy group of origamis. Additionally, we record the index and congruence level in the ambient symplectic group which gives data on what can appear in genus 4.

Abstract:Fold-and-cut theorem claims the possibility to cut out from a sheet a set of straight-line drawing using only one cut of scissors, without producing any other cut in the sheet and separating all the figures at the same time, just by folding flat the paper before the last cut. This fascinating and magic result, proved by <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://E.Demaine" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> and alii, allows a wide exploration of mathematical issues. We present in this paper several different approaches about the use of this result, as problem based learning, direct investigation, manipulative exploration and use of ICT, most of them based on learning by doing strategy. Most of the lessons we present have been tested on a group fo 170 students of primary and middle school and around 30 adults, who showed to be mostly satisfied with the experience.

Connecting the Branches of Multistable Non-Euclidean Origami by Crease Stretching

Abstract:Non-Euclidean origami is a promising technique for designing multistable deployable structures folded from nonplanar developable surfaces. The impossibility of flat foldability inherent to non-Euclidean origami results in two disconnected solution branches each with the same angular deficiency but opposite handedness. We show that these regions can be connected via "crease stretching" wherein the creases exhibit extensibility in addition to torsional stiffness. We further reveal that crease stretching acts as an energy storage method capable of passive deployment and control. Specifically, we show that in a Miura-Ori system with a single stretchable crease, this is achieved via two unique, easy to realize, equilibrium folding pathways for a certain wide set of parameters. In particular, we demonstrate that this connection mostly preserves the stable states of the non-Euclidean system, while resulting a third stable state enabled only by the interaction of crease torsion and stretching. Finally, we show that this simplified model can be used as an efficient and robust tool for inverse design of multistable origami based on closed-form predictions that yield the system parameters required to attain multiple, desired stable shapes. This facilitates the implementation of multistable origami for applications in architecture materials, robotics, and deployable structures.

Abstract:An origami manifold is a manifold equipped with a closed 2-form which is symplectic except on a hypersurface where it is like the pullback of a symplectic form by a folding map and its kernel fibrates with oriented circle fibers over a compact base. We can move back and forth between origami and symplectic manifolds using cutting (unfolding) and radial blow-up (folding), modulo compatibility conditions. We prove an origami convexity theorem for hamiltonian torus actions, classify toric origami manifolds by polyhedral objects resembling paper origami and discuss examples. We also prove a cobordism result and compute the cohomology of a special class of origami manifolds.

Abstract:Lattices and their underlying symmetries play a central role in determining the physical properties and applications of many natural and engineered materials. This research offers a comprehensive solution to a long-standing challenge regarding the lattice-based materials: how to systematically construct a lattice and transform it among different symmetric configurations in a predictable, scalable, and reversible way. By bridging the lattice geometry and rigid-folding kinematics of a group of origamis consisting of generic degree-4 vertices, we successfully construct all types of two- and three-dimensional Bravais lattices, and demonstrate that they can undergo all diffusionless phase transformations via rigid folding (i.e., dilation, extension, contraction, shear, and shuffle). Such folding-induced lattice transformations can trigger fundamental lattice-symmetry switches, which can either maintain or reconstruct the nearest-neighbor relationships according to a continuous symmetry measure. This study can foster the next generation of transformable lattice structures and materials with on-demand property tuning capabilities.

Abstract:Using a mathematical model for self-foldability of rigid origami, we determine which monohedral quadrilateral tilings of the plane are uniquely self-foldable. In particular, the Miura-ori and Chicken Wire patterns are not self-foldable under our definition, but such tilings that are rotationally-symmetric about the midpoints of the tile are uniquely self-foldable.

Abstract:We develop recursion equations to describe the three-dimensional shape of a sheet upon which a series of concentric curved folds have been inscribed. In the case of no stretching outside the fold, the three-dimensional shape of a single fold prescribes the shape of the entire origami structure. To better explore these structures, we derive continuum equations, valid in the limit of vanishing spacing between folds, to describe the smooth surface intersecting all the mountain folds. We find that this surface has negative Gaussian curvature with magnitude equal to the square of the fold's torsion. A series of open folds with constant fold angle generate a helicoid.

Abstract:Folding a sheet of paper along a curve can lead to structures seen in decorative art and utilitarian packing boxes. Here we present a theory for the simplest such structure: an annular circular strip that is folded along a central circular curve to form a three-dimensional buckled structure driven by geometrical frustration. We quantify this shape in terms of the radius of the circle, the dihedral angle of the fold and the mechanical properties of the sheet of paper and the fold itself. When the sheet is isometrically deformed everywhere except along the fold itself, stiff folds result in creases with constant curvature and oscillatory torsion. However, relatively softer folds inherit the broken symmetry of the buckled shape with oscillatory curvature and torsion. Our asymptotic analysis of the isometrically deformed state is corroborated by numerical simulations which allow us to generalize our analysis to study multiply folded structures.

Abstract:Origami, widely known as the ancient Japanese art of paper folding, has recently inspired a new paradigm of design for mechanical metamaterials and deployable structural systems. However, lack of rationalized design guidelines and scalable manufacturing methods has hindered their applications. To address this limitation, we present analytical methods for designing origami-based closed-loop units with inherent foldability, and for predicting their folding response (e.g., folding force, bistability, and area and volume change by folding). These units can be employed as building blocks for application-driven design and modular construction of foldable structures with desired performance and manufacturing scalability.

Abstract:Origami tessellations are particular textured morphing shell structures. Their unique folding and unfolding mechanisms on a local scale aggregate and bring on large changes in shape, curvature and elongation on a global scale. The existence of these global deformation modes allows for origami tessellations to fit non-trivial surfaces thus inspiring applications across a wide range of domains including structural engineering, architectural design and aerospace engineering. The present paper suggests a homogenization-type two-scale asymptotic method which, combined with standard tools from differential geometry of surfaces, yields a macroscopic continuous characterization of the global deformation modes of origami tessellations and other similar periodic pin-jointed trusses. The outcome of the method is a set of nonlinear differential equations governing the parametrization, metric and curvature of surfaces that the initially discrete structure can fit. The theory is presented through a case study of a fairly generic example: the eggbox pattern. The proposed continuous model predicts correctly the existence of various fittings that are subsequently constructed and illustrated.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive study on the mobility and redundancies of an origami in its fully unfolded, partially folded, and fully folded configurations by applying graph and screw theories via Davies' method. It seeks to take advantage of the existing analogies between origami and spherical mechanisms to apply the Davies method in the kinematic analysis of origami. A detailed calculation of the mobility of two origamis is performed, identifying redundant constraints in each configuration. In addition, the singular positions of the origami in each state are explored, providing an in-depth understanding of their behavior under different conditions. These results not only provide a comprehensive insight into origami kinematics, but also have significant implications for the design and application of origami-inspired mechanisms in various fields, ranging from robotics to structural engineering.
