Abstract:We investigate the consequences of fluid flowing on a continuous surface upon the geometric and statistical distribution of the flow. We find that the ability of a surface to collect water by its mere geometrical shape is proportional to the curvature of the contour line divided by the local slope. Consequently, rivers tend to lie in locations of high curvature and flat slopes. Gaussian surfaces are introduced as a model of random topography. For Gaussian surfaces the relation between convergence and slope is obtained analytically. The convergence of flow lines correlates positively with drainage area, so that lower slopes are associated with larger basins. As a consequence, we explain the observed relation between the local slope of a landscape and the area of the drainage basin geometrically. To some extent, the slope-area relation comes about not because of fluvial erosion of the landscape, but because of the way rivers choose their path. Our results are supported by numerically generated surfaces as well as by real landscapes.

Abstract:We construct various novel and elementary examples of dynamics with metric attractors that have intermingled basins. A main ingredient is the introduction of random walks along orbits of a given dynamical system. We develop theory for it and use it in particular to provide examples of thick metric attractors with intermingled basins.

Abstract:The Mackey-Glass system is a paradigmatic example of a delayed model whose dynamics is particularly complex due to, among other factors, its multistability involving the coexistence of many periodic and chaotic attractors. The prediction of the long-term dynamics is especially challenging in these systems, where the dimensionality is infinite and initial conditions must be specified as a function in a finite time interval. In this paper we extend the recently proposed basin entropy to randomly sample arbitrarily high-dimensional spaces. By complementing this stochastic approach with the basin fraction of the attractors in the initial conditions space we can understand the structure of the basins of attraction and how they are intermixed. The results reported here allow us to quantify the predictability giving us an idea about the long-term evolution of trajectories as a function of the initial conditions. The tools employed can result very useful in the study of complex systems of infinite dimension.

Abstract:The basin of attraction is the set of initial points that will eventually converge to some attracting set. Its knowledge is important in understanding the dynamical behavior of a given dynamical system of interest. In this work, we address the problem of reconstructing the basins of attraction of a multistable system, using only labeled data. To this end, we view this problem as a classification task and use a deep neural network as a classifier for predicting the attractor that corresponds to any given initial condition. Additionally, we provide a method for obtaining an approximation of the basin boundary of the underlying system, using the trained classification model. Finally, we provide evidence relating the complexity of the structure of the basins of attraction with the quality of the obtained reconstructions, via the concept of basin entropy. We demonstrate the application of the proposed method on the Lorenz system in a bistable regime.

Abstract:It has been conjectured that every stable manifold arising from a holomorphic automorphism, that acts hyperbolically on a compact invariant set, is biholomorphic to complex Euclidean space. Such stable manifolds are known to be biholomorphic to the basin of a uniformly attracting family of holomorphic maps. It is shown that the basin of a uniformly attracting family of holomorphic maps is biholomorphic to complex Euclidean space and this resolves the conjecture on the biholomorphism type of such stable manifolds affirmatively.

Abstract:Basin stability (BS) is a universal concept for complex systems studies, which focuses on the volume of the basin of attraction instead of the traditional linearization-based approach. It has a lot of applications in real-world systems especially in dynamical systems with a phenomenon of multi-stability, which is even more ubiquitous in delayed dynamics such as the firing neurons, the climatological processes, and the power grids. Due to the infinite dimensional property of the space for the initial values, how to properly define the basin's volume for delayed dynamics remains a fundamental problem. We propose here a technique which projects the infinite dimensional initial state space to a finite-dimensional Euclidean space by expanding the initial function along with different orthogonal or nonorthogonal basis. A generalized concept of basin's volume in delayed dynamics and a highly practicable calculating algorithm with a cross-validation procedure are provided to numerically estimate the basin of attraction in delayed dynamics. We show potential applicabilities of this approach by applying it to study several representative systems of biological or/and physical significance, including the delayed Hopfield neuronal model with multistability and delayed complex networks with synchronization dynamics.

Abstract:Drainage basins are essential to Geohydrology and Biodiversity. Defining those regions in a simple, robust and efficient way is a constant challenge in Earth Science. Here, we introduce a model to delineate multiple drainage basins through an extension of the Invasion Percolation-Based Algorithm (IPBA). In order to prove the potential of our approach, we apply it to real and artificial datasets. We observe that the perimeter and area distributions of basins and anti-basins display long tails extending over several orders of magnitude and following approximately power-law behaviors. Moreover, the exponents of these power laws depend on spatial correlations and are invariant under the landscape orientation, not only for terrestrial, but lunar and martian landscapes. The terrestrial and martian results are statistically identical, which suggests that a hypothetical martian river would present similarity to the terrestrial rivers. Finally, we propose a theoretical value for the Hack's exponent based on the fractal dimension of watersheds, $\gamma=D/2$. We measure $\gamma=0.54 \pm 0.01$ for Earth, which is close to our estimation of $\gamma \approx 0.55$. Our study suggests that Hack's law can have its origin purely in the maximum and minimum lines of the landscapes.

Abstract:This survey is based on a number of mini-courses taught by the author at the University of Surrey (UK) and Lanzhou University (China). It discusses the classical and modern results of the theory of attractors for dissipative PDEs, including attractors for autonomous and non-autonomous equations, dynamical systems in general topological spaces, various types of trajectory, pullback and random attractors, exponential attractors, determining functionals and inertial manifolds, as well as the dimension theory for the classes of attractors mentioned above. The theoretical results are illustrated by a number of clarifying examples and counterexamples. Bibliography: 248 titles.

Abstract:The Newton-Raphson basins of attraction, associated with the libration points (attractors), are revealed in the generalized Hill problem. The parametric variation of the position and the linear stability of the equilibrium points is determined, when the value of the perturbation parameter $\epsilon$ varies. The multivariate Newton-Raphson iterative scheme is used to determine the attracting domains on several types of two-dimensional planes. A systematic and thorough numerical investigation is performed in order to demonstrate the influence of the perturbation parameter on the geometry as well as of the basin entropy of the basins of convergence. The correlations between the basins of attraction and the corresponding required number of iterations are also illustrated and discussed. Our numerical analysis strongly indicates that the evolution of the attracting regions in this dynamical system is an extremely complicated yet very interesting issue.

Abstract:In this study, some dynamics that can be referred to as bifurcations, transitions, and attractors of real open flows, including axisymmetric shear flows, variable density jets, and wakes, have been presented. All of them can be considered as the experimental evidences of the quite abundant dynamics of the Navier-Stokes equations. A concept termed as physical territorial attractor (PTA) is proposed according to the properties of real open flows. Spatial evolutions of open flows, subsequently, can be described by different kinds of PTAs. Global relations through which global dynamics within one PTA or different PTAs can be studied are briefly introduced.

Abstract:Chaotic dynamical systems with two or more attractors lying on invariant subspaces may, provided certain mathematical conditions are fulfilled, exhibit intermingled basins of attraction: Each basin is riddled with holes belonging to basins of the other attractors. In order to investigate the occurrence of such phenomenon in dynamical systems of ecological interest (two-species competition with extinction) we have characterized quantitatively the intermingled basins using periodic-orbit theory and scaling laws. The latter results agree with a theoretical prediction from a stochastic model, and also with an exact result for the scaling exponent we derived for the specific class of models investigated. We discuss the consequences of the scaling laws in terms of the predictability of a final state (extinction of either species) in an ecological experiment.

Abstract:Stability assessment methods for dynamical systems have recently been complemented by basin stability and derived measures, i.e. probabilistic statements whether systems remain in a basin of attraction given a distribution of perturbations. This requires numerical estimation via Monte-Carlo sampling and integration of differential equations. Here, we analyze the applicability of basin stability to systems with basin geometries challenging for this numerical method, having fractal basin boundaries and riddled or intermingled basins of attraction. We find that numerical basin stability estimation is still meaningful for fractal boundaries but reaches its limits for riddled basins with holes.

Abstract:We prove that every $C^1$ generic three-dimensional flow has either infinitely many sinks, or, infinitely many hyperbolic or singular-hyperbolic attractors whose basins form a full Lebesgue measure set. We also prove in the orientable case that the set of accumulation points of the sinks of a $C^1$ generic three-dimensional flow has no dominated splitting with respect to the linear Poincaré flow. As a corollary we obtain that every three-dimensional flow can be $C^1$ approximated by flows with homoclinic tangencies or by singular-Axiom A flows.

Abstract:We present a slightly modified version of the well known "geometric Lorenz attractor". It consists in a C1 open set O of vector fields in R3 having an attracting region U containing: (1) a unique singular saddle point sigma; (2) a unique attractor Lambda containing the singular point; (3) the maximal invariant in U contains at most 2 chain recurrence classes, which are Lambda and (at most) one hyperbolic horseshoe. The horseshoe and the singular attractor have a collision along the union of 2 co-dimension 1 sub-manifolds which divide O in 3 regions. By crossing this collision locus, the attractor and the horseshoe may merge in a two-sided Lorenz attractor, or they may exchange their nature: the Lorenz attractor expel the singular point sigma and becomes a horseshoe and the horseshoe absorbs sigma becoming a Lorenz attractor. Abstract:In the paper "Infinite Product Represenations for Kernels and Iterations of Functions", a technique was developed which allows for the construction of a reproducing kernel Hilbert space on basins of attraction containing $0$. When the right conditions are met, an explicit orthonormal basis can be constructed using a particular class of operators. It is natural then to consider how the orthonormal basis changes as we let the basin of attraction vary. We will consider this question for the basins of attraction containing $0$ of the family of polynomials $\mathcal{F} = \{az^{2^{n+2}}-2az^{2^{n+1}}:a\neq0\}$, where $n\in\mathbb{N}$.

Abstract:The Argentine Basin is a deep-sea basin located in the South Atlantic Ocean that contains sedimentary deposits derived from different provenances. It is characterized by complex ocean dynamics encompassing diverse spatial and temporal dimensions. The northward subantarctic Malvinas Current and southward subtropical Brazil Current converge at the western margin of the Argentine Basin, resulting in the formation of the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence. Bottom currents, particularly currents flowing alongslope and horizontal eddies, are crucial in shaping the seafloor and in the formation of sedimentary features (e.g. contourites). The poorly understood strength and variability of bottom currents leave the processes that control sedimentation in deep environments unclear. High-resolution (1/12°) reanalysis was used to analyze near-bottom flows and bottom dynamics were compared with seafloor sedimentary characteristics obtained from geophysical datasets and sediment cores. High speeds, up to 3.5 m/s at the surfa ce and up to 1.4 m/s at the bottom, reveal the presence of intense flows in this area. The Zapiola Drift, an approx. 1,200 m high sedimentary deposit located in the central part of the Argentine Basin, is bounded by a zone of high bottom eddy kinetic energy (EKE) that resulted in the erosion of the seafloor and in the accumulation of sandy mud. The Malvinas Current is distinguished by strong and constant currents flowing northwards along the continental slope and by minimal EKE at the bottom. The area of the continental slope along which the Malvinas Current flows corresponds to a contourite terrace, a relatively flat surface composed almost entirely of sandy sediments and with abundant erosional features. The regions of highest EKE activity in the bottom layer is the overshoot of the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence and the Abyssal Plain. Our study highlights the impact of bottom current dynamics on contouritic sedimentation. In some regions, sedimentation is influenced by sporadic processes that occur between intense and weak flow events over time, which are considered intermittent processes. While sedimentation in other areas is controlled by constant flows. A better understanding of the strength and variability of bottom currents will improve paleoceanographic reconstructions based on the sedimentary record.
