Abstract:We present a parametric family of Riordan arrays which are obtained by multiplying any Riordan array with a generalized Pascal array. In particular, we focus on some interesting properties of one-parameter Catalan triangles. We obtain several combinatorial identities that involve two special Catalan matrices, the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, some periodic sequences, and the Fibonacci numbers.

Abstract:We study the 2-adic behavior of the number of domino tilings of a $2(2n+1)\times 2(2n+1)$ torus. We show that this number is of the form $2^{4n+3}g(n)^2+2^{8n+2}(2n+1)^{4n}h(n)$, where $g(n)$ and $h(n)$ are odd positive integers. Moreover, we prove that $g(n)$ and $h(n)$ are uniformly continuous under the 2-adic metric and invariant under interchanging $n$ and $-1-n$. This paper is an analogy of Henry Cohn's results for $2n\times 2n$ squares (Electron. J. Combin. 6 (1999)).

Abstract:A chessboard has the property that every row and every column has as many white squares as black squares. In this mostly methodological note, we address the problem of counting such rectangular arrays with a fixed (numeric) number of rows, but an arbitrary (symbolic) number of columns. We first address the ``vanilla" problem where there are no restrictions, and then go on to discuss the still-more-challenging problem of counting such binary arrays that are not permitted to contain a specified (finite) set of horizontal patterns, and a specified set of vertical patterns. While we can rigorously prove that each such sequence satisfies some linear recurrence equation with polynomial coefficients, actually finding these recurrences poses major {\it symbolic}-computational challenges, that we can only meet in some small cases. In fact, just generating as many as possible terms of these sequences is a big {\it numeric}-computational challenge. This was tackled by computer whiz Ron H. Hardin, who contributed several such sequences, and computed quite a few terms of each. We extend Hardin's sequences quite considerably. We also talk about the much easier problem of counting such restricted arrays without balance conditions.

Abstract:A de Bruijn arrays code is a set of $r \times s$ binary doubly-periodic arrays such that each binary $n \times m$ matrix is contained exactly once as a window in one of the arrays. Such a set of arrays can be viewed as a two-dimensional generalization of a perfect factor in the de Bruijn graph. Necessary conditions for the existence of such arrays are given. Several direct constructions and recursive constructions for such arrays are given. A framework for a theory of two-dimensional feedback shift register which is akin to (one-dimensional) feedback shift registers is suggested.

Abstract:For a two dimensional vector $\bar v=(\alpha,\beta)$, where $\alpha>0, \beta>0$ are irrational numbers independent over $\mathbb{Q}$, we consider the set $D_n=\{(i\alpha\,{\rm mod}\,1,i\beta\,{\rm mod}\,1),i=1,\ldots,n\}$ in a two dimensional torus and the partition of this torus into Voronoi cells. Abstract:We introduce two-dimensional periodic arrays that are a variant of the de Bruijn tori. We call them nested perfect arrays. Instead of asking that every array of a given size has exactly one occurrence, we partition the positions in congruence classes and we ask exactly one occurrence in each congruence class. We also ask that this property applies recursively to each of the subarrays. We give a method to construct nested perfect arrays based on Pascal triangle matrix modulo 2. For the two-symbol alphabet, and for n being a power of 2, we partition the positions of the arrays in many congruence classes by taking the row number modulo n and the column number modulo n. We construct arrays where each possible array occurs times, once in each congruence class. Our method yields exponentially many (in ) different nested perfect arrays.

On the analytic theory of isotropic ternary quadratic forms II

Abstract:In the first part of this work \cite{Du}, a quantitative supplement to the Hasse principle was given for the count of the number of automorphic orbits of primitive zeros of a genus of ternary quadratic forms. This sequel contains, for certain special forms, an independent and elementary proof of this result. When combined with other results of \cite{Du}, this proof also leads to a refinement of an asymptotic result of \cite{Du} and some corollaries for these special forms.

Counting Unimodular Lattices in $\R^{r,s}$

Abstract:Narain lattices are unimodular lattices {\it in} $\R^{r,s}$, subject to certain natural equivalence relation and rationality condition. The problem of describing and counting these rational equivalence classes of Narain lattices in $\R^{2,2}$ has led to an interesting connection to binary forms and their Gauss products, as shown in [HLOYII]. As a sequel, in this paper, we study arbitrary rational Narain lattices and generalize some of our earlier results. In particular in the case of $\R^{2,2}$, a new interpretation of the Gauss product of binary forms brings new light to a number of related objects -- rank 4 rational Narain lattices, over-lattices, rank 2 primitive sublattices of an abstract rank 4 even unimodular lattice $U^2$, and isomorphisms of discriminant groups of rank 2 lattices.

Abstract:Algebraic statistics for binary random variables is concerned with highly structured algebraic varieties in the space of 2x2x...x2-tensors. We demonstrate the advantages of representing such varieties in the coordinate system of binary cumulants. Our primary focus lies on hidden subset models. Parametrizations and implicit equations in cumulants are derived for hyperdeterminants, for secant and tangential varieties of Segre varieties, and for certain context-specific independence models. Extending work of Rota and collaborators, we explore the polynomial inequalities satisfied by cumulants.

Abstract:We derive combinatorial identities, involving the Bernoulli and Euler numbers, for the numbers of standard Young tableaux of certain skew shapes. This generalizes the classical formulas of D. Andre on the number of up-down permutations. The analysis uses a transfer operator approach extending the method of Elkies, combined with an identity expressing the volume of a certain polytope in terms of a Schur function.

Abstract:We introduce a family of univariate polynomials indexed by integer partitions. At prime powers, they count the number of subspaces in a finite vector space that transform under a regular diagonal matrix in a specified manner. This enumeration formula is a combinatorial solution to a problem introduced by Bender, Coley, Robbins and Rumsey. At $1$, they count set partitions with specified block sizes. At $0$, they count standard tableaux of specified shape. At $-1$, they count standard shifted tableaux of a specified shape. These polynomials are generated by a new statistic on set partitions (called the interlacing number) as well as a polynomial statistic on standard tableaux. They allow us to express $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind as sums over standard tableaux and as sums over set partitions. For partitions whose parts are at most two, these polynomials are the non-zero entries of the Catalan triangle associated to the $q$-Hermite orthogonal polynomial sequence. In particular, when all parts are equal to two, they coincide with the polynomials defined by Touchard that enumerate chord diagrams by the number of crossings.

Enumeration of Row-Column Designs

Abstract:We computationally completely enumerate a number of types of row-column designs up to isotopism, including double, sesqui and triple arrays as known from the literature, and two newly introduced types that we call mono arrays and AO-arrays. We calculate autotopism group sizes for the designs we generate. For larger parameter values, where complete enumeration is not feasible, we generate examples of some of the designs, and generate exhaustive lists of admissible parameters. For some admissible parameter sets, we prove non-existence results. We also give some explicit constructions of sesqui arrays, mono arrays and AO-arrays, and investigate connections to Youden rectangles and binary pseud Youden designs.

Rectangle Tiling Binary Arrays

Abstract:The problem of rectangle tiling binary arrays is defined as follows. Given an $n \times n$ array $A$ of zeros and ones and a natural number $p$, our task is to partition $A$ into at most $p$ rectangular tiles, so that the maximal weight of a tile is minimized. A tile is any rectangular subarray of $A$. The weight of a tile is the sum of elements that fall within it. We present a linear $(O(n^2))$ time $(\frac{3}{2}+\frac{p^2}{w(A)})$-approximation algorithm (where $\frac{p^2}{w(A)} < \frac{1}{2}$) for this problem, where $w(A)$ denotes the weight of the whole array $A$. This improves on the previously known approximation with the ratio $2$. The result is best possible in the following sense. The algorithm employs the lower bound of $L=\lceil \frac{w(A)}{p} \rceil$, which is the only known and used bound on the optimum in all algorithms for rectangle tiling. We prove that a better approximation factor for the binary \RTILE cannot be achieved using $L$, because there exist arrays, whose every partition contains a tile with weight at least $(\frac{3}{2}+\frac{p^2}{w(A)})L$. We also consider the dual problem of rectangle tiling for binary arrays, where we are given an upper bound on the weight of the tiles, and we have to cover the array $A$ with the minimum number of non-overlapping tiles. Both problems have natural extensions to $d$-dimensional versions, for which we provide analogous results.

Abstract:We count the 𝔽 q -rational points of GIT quotients of quiver representations with relations. We focus on two types of algebras – one is one-point extended from a quiver Q, and the other is the Dynkin A 2 tensored with Q. For both, we obtain explicit formulas. We study when they are polynomial-count. We follow the similar line as in the first paper but algebraic manipulations in Ringel-Hall algebra will be replaced by corresponding geometric constructions.
Some remarks on off-diagonal Ramsey numbers for vector spaces over $\mathbb{F}_{2}$

Abstract:For every positive integer $d$, we show that there must exist an absolute constant $c > 0$ such that the following holds: for any integer $n \geq cd^{7}$ and any red-blue coloring of the one-dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_{2}^{n}$, there must exist either a $d$-dimensional subspace for which all of its one-dimensional subspaces get colored red or a $2$-dimensional subspace for which all of its one-dimensional subspaces get colored blue. This answers recent questions of Nelson and Nomoto, and confirms that for any even plane binary matroid $N$, the class of $N$-free, claw-free binary matroids is polynomially $\chi$-bounded. Our argument will proceed via a reduction to a well-studied additive combinatorics problem, originally posed by Green: given a set $A \subset \mathbb{F}_{2}^{n}$ with density $\alpha \in [0,1]$, what is the largest subspace that we can find in $A+A$? Our main contribution to the story is a new result for this problem in the regime where $1/\alpha$ is large with respect to $n$, which utilizes ideas from the recent breakthrough paper of Kelley and Meka on sets of integers without three-term arithmetic progressions.

Abstract:A computational approach to using plug-in arrays, circulant matrices, and negacirculant matrices in the construction and enumeration of extremal and near-extremal self-dual ternary codes. Isomorphism classes of such codes obtainable from orthogonal designs of dimensions 2, 4, and 8 are completely enumerated for several lengths. Additionally, partial searches are conducted for larger lengths, and weight enumerators are derived for near-extremal codes.

Abstract:Cyclotomic numbers and Jacobi sums, introduced over two centuries ago by Gauss and Jacobi, respectively, are pivotal in number theory and find wide applications in combinatorial designs, coding theory, cryptography, and information theory. The cyclotomic problem, focused on determining all cyclotomic numbers, or equivalently evaluating all Jacobi sums of a given order, has been a subject of extensive research. This paper explores their trivariate counterparts, termed "ternary cyclotomic numbers" and "ternary Jacobi sums", highlighting the fundamental properties that mirror those of the classical cases. We show the ternary versions of Fourier series expansions, two symmetry properties, and a summation equation. We further demonstrate that ternary Jacobi sums, with at least one trivial variable, can be evaluated in terms of classical Jacobi sums of the same order. These properties are established through elementary methods that parallel those utilized in classical cases. Based on these properties, then we offer explicit calculations for all ternary Jacobi sums and ternary cyclotomic numbers of order $ e = 2 $, and near-complete results for order $ e = 3 $, with the exception of the elusive integer $ J_{3}(1, 1, 2) $ for us.
