Abstract:In this paper, the dynamical behaviors of elementary cellular automata (ECA) rule 88 are studied from the viewpoint of symbolic dynamics. Based on the results derived from the finite case, it is shown that there exist three different Bernoulli-measure subsystems of rule 88 in the space of bi-infinite symbolic sequences. The relationships of these three subsystems and the existence of fixed points are investigated, revealing that the union of them is not the global attractor of rule 88 under the bi-infinite case. Furthermore, the dynamical properties of topologically mixing and topological entropy of rule 88 are exploited on its subsystems. In addition, it is shown that rule 88, a member of Wolfram’s class II, possesses richer and more complicated dynamical behaviors in the space of bi-infinite sequences. Finally, it is noted that the method presented in this work is also applicable to study the dynamics of other ECA rules, especially the 112 Bernoulli-shift rules therein.
Decentralized Cooperation Strategies in Two-Dimensional Traffic of Cellular Automata

Abstract:We study the two-dimensional traffic of cellular automata using computer simulation. We propose two type of decentralized cooperation strategies, which are called stepping aside (CS-SA) and choosing alternative routes (CS-CAR) respectively. We introduce them into an existing two-dimensional cellular automata (CA) model. CS-SA is designed to prohibit a kind of ping-pong jump when two objects standing together try to move in opposite directions. CS-CAR is designed to change the solution of conflict in parallel update. CS-CAR encourages the objects involved in parallel conflicts choose their alternative routes instead of waiting. We also combine the two cooperation strategies (CS-SA-CAR) to test their combined effects. It is found that the system keeps on a partial jam phase with nonzero velocity and flow until the density reaches one. The ratios of the ping-pong jump and the waiting objects involved in conflict are decreased obviously, especially at the free phase. And the average flow is improved by the three cooperation strategies. Although the average travel time is lengthened a bit by CS-CAR, it is shorten by CS-SA and CS-SA-CAR. In addition, we discuss the advantage and applicability of decentralized cooperation modeling.

Abstract:A k-stable c-coloured Candy Crush grid is a weak proper c-colouring of a particular type of k-uniform hypergraph. In this paper we introduce a fully polynomial randomised approximation scheme (FPRAS) which counts the number of k-stable c-coloured Candy Crush grids of a given size (m, n) for certain values of c and k. We implemented this algorithm on Matlab, and found that in a Candy Crush grid with7 available colours there are approximately 4.3*10^61 3-stable colourings. (Note that, typical Candy Crush games are played with 6 colours and our FPRAS is not guaranteed to work in expected polynomial time with k= 3 and c= 6.) We also discuss the applicability of this FPRAS to the problem of counting the number of weak c-colourings of other, more general hypergraphs.

Abstract:A probabilistic cellular automaton for cargo transport is presented that generalizes the totally asymmetric exclusion process with a defect from continuous time to parallel dynamics. It appears as an underlying principle in cellular automata for traffic flow with non-local jumps for the kinetic constraint to drive as fast as possible. The exactly solvable model shows a discontinuous phase transition between two regions with different cargo velocities.

Abstract:Elementary Cellular Automata (ECA) are a well-studied computational universe that is, despite its simple configurations, capable of impressive computational variety. Harvesting this computation in a useful way has historically shown itself to be difficult, but if combined with reservoir computing (RC), this becomes much more feasible. Furthermore, RC and ECA enable energy-efficient AI, making the combination a promising concept for Edge AI. In this work, we contrast ECA to substrates of Partially-Local CA (PLCA) and Homogeneous Homogeneous Random Boolean Networks (HHRBN). They are, in comparison, the topological heterogeneous counterparts of ECA. This represents a step from ECA towards more biological-plausible substrates. We analyse these substrates by testing on an RC benchmark (5-bit memory), using Temporal Derrida plots to estimate the sensitivity and assess the defect collapse rate. We find that, counterintuitively, disordered topology does not necessarily mean disordered computation. There are countering computational "forces" of topology imperfections leading to a higher collapse rate (order) and yet, if accounted for, an increased sensitivity to the initial condition. These observations together suggest a shrinking critical range.

Abstract:In this dissertation, we study temporally stochasticity in cellular automata and the behavior of such cellular automata. The work also explores the computational ability of such cellular automaton that illustrates the computability of solving the affinity classification problem. In addition to that, a cellular automaton, defined over Cayley tree, is shown as the classical searching problem solver. The proposed temporally stochastic cellular automata deals with two elementary cellular automata rules, say $f$ and $g$. The $f$ is the default rule, however, $g$ is temporally applied to the overall system with some probability $\tau$ which acts as a noise in the system. After exploring the dynamics of temporally stochastic cellular automata (TSCAs), we study the dynamical behavior of these temporally stochastic cellular automata (TSCAs) to identify the TSCAs that converge to a fixed point from any seed. We apply each of the convergent TSCAs to some standard datasets and observe the effectiveness of each TSCA as a pattern classifier. It is observed that the proposed TSCA-based classifier shows competitive performance in comparison with existing classifier algorithms. We use temporally stochastic cellular automata to solve a new problem in the field of cellular automata, named as, affinity classification problem which is a generalization of the density classification problem . We show that this model can be used in several applications, like modeling self-healing systems. Finally, we introduce a new model of computing unit developed around cellular automata to reduce the workload of the Central Processing Unit (CPU) of a machine to compute. Each cell of the computing unit acts as a tiny processing element with attached memory. Such a CA is implemented on the Cayley Tree to realize efficient solutions for diverse computational problems.

Abstract:Cellular automata (CA) captivate researchers due to teh emergent, complex individualized behavior that simple global rules of interaction enact. Recent advances in the field have combined CA with convolutional neural networks to achieve self-regenerating images. This new branch of CA is called neural cellular automata [1]. The goal of this project is to use the idea of idea of neural cellular automata to grow prediction machines. We place many different convolutional neural networks in a grid. Each conv net cell outputs a prediction of what the next state will be, and minimizes predictive error. Cells received their neighbors' colors and fitnesses as input. Each cell's fitness score described how accurate its predictions were. Cells could also move to explore their environment and some stochasticity was applied to movement.

Abstract:We show how to construct a deterministic nearest-neighbour cellular automaton (CA) with four states which emulates diffusion on a one-dimensional lattice. The pseudo-random numbers needed for directing random walkers in the diffusion process are generated with the help of rule 30. This CA produces density profiles which agree very well with solutions of the diffusion equation, and we discuss this agreement for two different boundary and initial conditions. We also show how our construction can be generalized to higher dimensions.

Abstract:A coarse-grained cellular automaton is proposed to simulate traffic systems. There, cells represent road sections. A cell can be in two states: jammed or passable. Numerical calculations are performed for a piece of square lattice with open boundary conditions, for the same piece with some cells removed and for a map of a small city. The results indicate the presence of a phase transition in the parameter space, between two macroscopic phases: passable and jammed. The results are supplemented by exact calculations of the stationary probabilities of states for the related Kripke structure constructed for the traffic system. There, the symmetry-based reduction of the state space allows to partially reduce the computational limitations of the numerical method.

Abstract:A cellular automaton in which cells represent agents playing the Prisoner's Dilemma (PD) game following the simple "win-stay, loose-shift" strategy is studied. Individuals with binary behavior, such as they can either cooperate (C) or defect (D), play repeatedly with their neighbors (Von Neumann's and Moore's neighborhoods). Their utilities in each round of the game are given by a rescaled payoff matrix described by a single parameter Tau, which measures the ratio of 'temptation to defect' to 'reward for cooperation'. Depending on the region of the parameter space Tau, the system self-organizes - after a transient - into dynamical equilibrium states characterized by different definite fractions of C agents (2 states for the Von Neumann neighborhood and 4 for Moore neighborhood). For some ranges of Tau the cluster size distributions, the power spectrums P(f) and the perimeter-area curves follow power-law scalings. Percolation below threshold is also found for D agent clusters. We also analyze the asynchronous dynamics version of this model and compare results.

Abstract:The Game of Life (GoL), one well known 2D cellular automaton, does not typically ensure interesting long-term phenotypic dynamics. Therefore, while being Turing complete, GoL cannot be said to be open-ended. In this work, we extend GoL with the opportunity for local mutations, thus enabling a heterogeneous life-like cellular automaton guided by an evolutionary inner loop. Additionally, we introduce the concept of cell ageing to ensure that cell aliveness (activated by inheritance with variation, and controlled by ageing) and actual cell computation (governed by life-like rules on local neighborhoods) are kept conceptually separated. We conduct an experimental campaign to identify suitable parameters that produce long-term phenotypic dynamics and favor genotypic innovations.

Abstract:We present a probabilistic cellular automaton (CA) with two absorbing states which performs classification of binary strings in a non-deterministic sense. In a system evolving under this CA rule, empty sites become occupied with a probability proportional to the number of occupied sites in the neighborhood, while occupied sites become empty with a probability proportional to the number of empty sites in the neighborhood. The probability that all sites become eventually occupied is equal to the density of occupied sites in the initial string.

Abstract:We consider three-state cellular automata in two dimensions in which two colored states, blue and red, compete for control of the empty background, starting from low initial densities $p$ and $q$. When the dynamics of both colored types are one-dimensional, the dynamics has three distinct phases, characterized by a power relationship between $p$ and $q$: two in which one of the colors is prevalent, and one when the colored types block each other and leave most of the space forever empty. When one of the colors spread in two dimensions and the other in one dimension, we also establish a power relation between $p$ and $q$ that characterizes which of the two colors eventually controls most of the space.

Dynamical Phase Transitions in Graph Cellular Automata

Abstract:Discrete dynamical systems can exhibit complex behaviour from the iterative application of straightforward local rules. A famous example are cellular automata whose global dynamics are notoriously challenging to analyze. To address this, we relax the regular connectivity grid of cellular automata to a random graph, which gives the class of graph cellular automata. Using the dynamical cavity method (DCM) and its backtracking version (BDCM), we show that this relaxation allows us to derive asymptotically exact analytical results on the global dynamics of these systems on sparse random graphs. Concretely, we showcase the results on a specific subclass of graph cellular automata with ``conforming non-conformist'' update rules, which exhibit dynamics akin to opinion formation. Such rules update a node's state according to the majority within their own neighbourhood. In cases where the majority leads only by a small margin over the minority, nodes may exhibit non-conformist behaviour. Instead of following the majority, they either maintain their own state, switch it, or follow the minority. For configurations with different initial biases towards one state we identify sharp dynamical phase transitions in terms of the convergence speed and attractor types. From the perspective of opinion dynamics this answers when consensus will emerge and when two opinions coexist almost indefinitely.

Abstract:A cellular automata (CA) configuration is constructed that exhibits emergent failover. The configuration is based on standard Game of Life rules. Gliders and glider-guns form the core messaging structure in the configuration. The blinker is represented as the basic computational unit, and it is shown how it can be recreated in case of a failure. Stateless failover using primary-backup mechanism is demonstrated. The details of the CA components used in the configuration and its working are described, and a simulation of the complete configuration is also presented.

Abstract:We consider bond percolation games on the $2$-dimensional square lattice in which each edge (that is either between the sites $(x,y)$ and $(x+1,y)$ or between the sites $(x,y)$ and $(x,y+1)$, for all $(x,y) \in \mathbb{Z}^{2}$) has been assigned, independently, a label that reads "trap" with probability $p$, "target" with probability $q$, and "open" with probability $1-p-q$. Once a realization of this labeling is generated, it is revealed in its entirety to the players before the game starts. The game involves a single token, initially placed at the origin, and two players who take turns to make moves. A move involves relocating the token from where it is currently located, say the site $(x,y)$, to any one of $(x+1,y)$ and $(x,y+1)$. A player wins if she is able to move the token along an edge labeled a target, or if she is able to force her opponent to move the token along an edge labeled a trap. The game is said to result in a draw if it continues indefinitely (i.e.\ with the token always being moved along open edges). We ask the question: for what values of $p$ and $q$ is the probability of draw equal to $0$? By establishing a close connection between the event of draw and the ergodicity of a suitably defined probabilistic cellualar automaton, we are able to show that the probability of draw is $0$ when $p > 0.157175$ and $q=0$, and when $p=q \geqslant 0.10883$.

Complex dynamics of elementary cellular automata emerging from chaotic rules

Abstract:We show techniques of analyzing complex dynamics of cellular automata (CA) with chaotic behaviour. CA are well known computational substrates for studying emergent collective behaviour, complexity, randomness and interaction between order and chaotic systems. A number of attempts have been made to classify CA functions on their space-time dynamics and to predict behaviour of any given function. Examples include mechanical computation, \lambda{} and Z-parameters, mean field theory, differential equations and number conserving features. We aim to classify CA based on their behaviour when they act in a historical mode, i.e. as CA with memory. We demonstrate that cell-state transition rules enriched with memory quickly transform a chaotic system converging to a complex global behaviour from almost any initial condition. Thus just in few steps we can select chaotic rules without exhaustive computational experiments or recurring to additional parameters. We provide analysis of well-known chaotic functions in one-dimensional CA, and decompose dynamics of the automata using majority memory exploring glider dynamics and reactions.

Abstract:The cellular automaton model for traffic flow exhibits a jamming transition from a free-flow phase to a congested phase. In the deterministic case this transition corresponds to a critical point with diverging correlation length. In the presence of noise, however, no consistent picture has emerged up to now. We present data from numerical simulations which suggest the absence of critical behavior. The transition of the deterministic case is smeared out and one only observes the remnants of the critical point.

Abstract:We presented a predator-prey lattice model containing moveable wolves and sheep, which are characterized by Penna double bit strings. Sexual reproduction and child-care strategies are considered. To implement this model in an efficient way, we build a fully parallel Cellular Automata based on a new definition of the neighborhood. We show the roles played by the initial densities of the populations, the mutation rate and the linear size of the lattice in the evolution of this model.
