Abstract:In this paper, the dynamical behaviors of elementary cellular automata (ECA) rule 88 are studied from the viewpoint of symbolic dynamics. Based on the results derived from the finite case, it is shown that there exist three different Bernoulli-measure subsystems of rule 88 in the space of bi-infinite symbolic sequences. The relationships of these three subsystems and the existence of fixed points are investigated, revealing that the union of them is not the global attractor of rule 88 under the bi-infinite case. Furthermore, the dynamical properties of topologically mixing and topological entropy of rule 88 are exploited on its subsystems. In addition, it is shown that rule 88, a member of Wolfram’s class II, possesses richer and more complicated dynamical behaviors in the space of bi-infinite sequences. Finally, it is noted that the method presented in this work is also applicable to study the dynamics of other ECA rules, especially the 112 Bernoulli-shift rules therein.

Abstract:In this paper, the dynamics of elementary cellular automata rule 42 is investigated in the bi-infinite symbolic sequence space. Rule 42, a member of Wolfram's class II which was said to be simply as periodic before, actually defines a chaotic global attractor; that is, rule 42 is topologically mixing on its global attractor and possesses the positive topological entropy. Therefore, rule 42 is chaotic in the sense of both Li-Yorke and Devaney. Meanwhile, the characteristic function and the basin tree diagram of rule 42 are explored for some finite length of binary strings, which reveal its Bernoulli characteristics. The method presented in this work is also applicable to studying the dynamics of other rules, especially the 112 Bernoulli-shift rules of the elementary cellular automata.
Phase transition in one-dimensional excitable media with variable interaction range

Abstract:We investigate two discrete models of excitable media on a one-dimensional integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}$: the $\kappa$-color Cyclic Cellular Automaton (CCA) and the $\kappa$-color Firefly Cellular Automaton (FCA). In both models, sites are assigned uniformly random colors from $\mathbb{Z}/\kappa\mathbb{Z}$. Neighboring sites with colors within a specified interaction range $r$ tend to synchronize their colors upon a particular local event of 'excitation'. We establish that there are three phases of CCA/FCA on $\mathbb{Z}$ as we vary the interaction range $r$. First, if $r$ is too small (undercoupled), there are too many non-interacting pairs of colors, and the whole graph $\mathbb{Z}$ will be partitioned into non-interacting intervals of sites with no excitation within each interval. If $r$ is within a sweet spot (critical), then we show the system clusters into ever-growing monochromatic intervals. For the critical interaction range $r=\lfloor \kappa/2 \rfloor$, we show the density of edges of differing colors at time $t$ is $\Theta(t^{-1/2})$ and each site excites $\Theta(t^{1/2})$ times up to time $t$. Lastly, if $r$ is too large (overcoupled), then neighboring sites can excite each other and such 'defects' will generate waves of excitation at a constant rate so that each site will get excited at least at a linear rate. For the special case of FCA with $r=\lfloor 2/\kappa \rfloor+1$, we show that every site will become $(\kappa+1)$-periodic eventually.

Abstract:We show techniques of analyzing complex dynamics of cellular automata (CA) with chaotic behaviour. CA are well known computational substrates for studying emergent collective behaviour, complexity, randomness and interaction between order and chaotic systems. A number of attempts have been made to classify CA functions on their space-time dynamics and to predict behaviour of any given function. Examples include mechanical computation, \lambda{} and Z-parameters, mean field theory, differential equations and number conserving features. We aim to classify CA based on their behaviour when they act in a historical mode, i.e. as CA with memory. We demonstrate that cell-state transition rules enriched with memory quickly transform a chaotic system converging to a complex global behaviour from almost any initial condition. Thus just in few steps we can select chaotic rules without exhaustive computational experiments or recurring to additional parameters. We provide analysis of well-known chaotic functions in one-dimensional CA, and decompose dynamics of the automata using majority memory exploring glider dynamics and reactions.

Detecting emergent processes in cellular automata with excess information

Abstract:Many natural processes occur over characteristic spatial and temporal scales. This paper presents tools for (i) flexibly and scalably coarse-graining cellular automata and (ii) identifying which coarse-grainings express an automaton's dynamics well, and which express its dynamics badly. We apply the tools to investigate a range of examples in Conway's Game of Life and Hopfield networks and demonstrate that they capture some basic intuitions about emergent processes. Finally, we formalize the notion that a process is emergent if it is better expressed at a coarser granularity.

Limiting behavior of 3-color excitable media on arbitrary graphs

Abstract:Fix a simple graph $G=(V,E)$ and choose a random initial 3-coloring of vertices drawn from a uniform product measure. The 3-color cycle cellular automaton is a process in which at each discrete time step in parallel, every vertex with color $i$ advances to the successor color $(i+1)$ mod 3 if in contact with a neighbor with the successor color, and otherwise retains the same color. In the Greenberg-Hastings Model, the same update rule applies only to color 0, while other two colors automatically advance. The limiting behavior of these processes has been studied mainly on the integer lattices. In this paper, we introduce a monotone comparison process defined on the universal covering space of the underlying graph, and characterize the limiting behavior of these processes on arbitrary connected graphs. In particular, we establish a phase transition on the Erdös-Rényi random graph. On infinite trees, we connect the rate of color change to the cloud speed of an associated tree-indexed walk. We give estimates of the cloud speed by generalizing known results to trees with leaves.

Dynamical phase transitions in graph cellular automata

Abstract:Discrete dynamical systems can exhibit complex behavior from the iterative application of straightforward local rules. A famous class of examples comes from cellular automata whose global dynamics are notoriously challenging to analyze. To address this, we relax the regular connectivity grid of cellular automata to a random graph, which gives the class of graph cellular automata. Using the dynamical cavity method and its backtracking version, we show that this relaxation allows us to derive asymptotically exact analytical results on the global dynamics of these systems on sparse random graphs. Concretely, we showcase the results on a specific subclass of graph cellular automata with "conforming nonconformist" update rules, which exhibit dynamics akin to opinion formation. Such rules update a node's state according to the majority within their own neighborhood. In cases where the majority leads only by a small margin over the minority, nodes may exhibit nonconformist behavior. Instead of following the majority, they either maintain their own state, switch it, or follow the minority. For configurations with different initial biases towards one state we identify sharp dynamical phase transitions in terms of the convergence speed and attractor types. Abstract:To respect physics and nature, cellular automata (CA) models of self-organisation, emergence, computation and logical universality should be isotropic, having equivalent dynamics in all directions. We present a novel paradigm, the iso-rule, a concise expression for isotropic CA by the output table for each isotropic neighborhood group, allowing an efficient method of navigating and exploring iso-rule-space. We describe new functions and tools in DDLab to generate iso-groups and iso-rules, for multi-value as well as binary, in one, two and three dimensions. These methods include filing, filtering, mutating, analysing dynamics by input-frequency and entropy, identifying the critical iso-groups for glider-gun/eater dynamics, and automatically classifying iso-rule-space. We illustrate these ideas and methods for two dimensional CA on square and hexagonal lattices.
Locally adaptive cellular automata for goal-oriented self-organization

Abstract:The essential ingredient for studying the phenomena of emergence is the ability to generate and manipulate emergent systems that span large scales. Cellular automata are the model class particularly known for their effective scalability but are also typically constrained by fixed local rules. In this paper, we propose a new model class of adaptive cellular automata that allows for the generation of scalable and expressive models. We show how to implement computation-effective adaptation by coupling the update rule of the cellular automaton with itself and the system state in a localized way. To demonstrate the applications of this approach, we implement two different emergent models: a self-organizing Ising model and two types of plastic neural networks, a rate and spiking model. With the Ising model, we show how coupling local/global temperatures to local/global measurements can tune the model to stay in the vicinity of the critical temperature. With the neural models, we reproduce a classical balanced state in large recurrent neuronal networks with excitatory and inhibitory neurons and various plasticity mechanisms. Our study opens multiple directions for studying collective behavior and emergence.

Abstract:In this paper, the dynamics of elementary cellular automaton (ECA) rule 73 is investigated under the framework of the bi-infinite symbolic sequence space. This paper provides a rigorous mathematical analysis for the evolution of symbol sequences in some subsystems of rule 73. ECA rule 73, a member of Wolfram’s class III and Chua’s complex Bernoulli-shift rules, defines many more subsystems with rich and complicated dynamical properties such as topologically mixing, topologically transitivity and positive topological entropy, and henceforth the dynamical system generated by the global map of the rule is chaotic in the sense of both Devaney and Li-Yorke.

Lower-level, shapeshifting clusters frequently follow a transient attractor trajectory, generating new clusters, some of which periodically self-duplicate. When the initial distribution of live cells is sufficiently sparse, these clusters coalesce into larger formations that also self-replicate. These formations may further form the boundaries of an expanding complex on an even larger scale. This rule, dubbed ``Outlier,'' is rotationally symmetric and applies to 2D Moore neighborhoods. It was evolved through Genetic Programming during an extensive automated search for rules that foster open-ended evolution in CA. While self-replicating structures, both crafted and emergent, have been created in CA with state sets intentionally designed for this purpose, the Outlier may be the first known rule to facilitate emergent self-replication across two spatial scales in simple binary CA.

Abstract:We define a cellular automaton where a resting cell excites if number of its excited neighbours belong to some specified interval and boundaries of the interval change depending on ratio of excited and refractory neighbours in the cell's neighbourhood. We calculate excitability of a cell as a number of possible neighbourhood configurations that excite the resting cell. We call cells with maximal values of excitability conductive. In exhaustive search of functions of excitation interval updates we select functions which lead to formation of connected configurations of conductive cells. The functions discovered are used to design conductive, wire-like, pathways in initially non-conductive arrays of cells. We demonstrate that by positioning seeds of growing conductive pathways it is possible to implement a wide range of routing operations, including reflection of wires, stopping wires, formation of conductive bridges and generation of new wires in the result of collision. The findings presented may be applied in designing conductive circuits in excitable non-linear media, reaction-diffusion chemical systems, neural tissue and assembles of conductive polymers.

Abstract:A small-world cellular automaton network has been formulated to simulate the long-range interactions of complex networks using unconventional computing methods in this paper. Conventional cellular automata use local updating rules. The new type of cellular automata networks uses local rules with a fraction of long-range shortcuts derived from the properties of small-world networks. Simulations show that the self-organized criticality emerges naturally in the system for a given probability of shortcuts and transition occurs as the probability increases to some critical value indicating the small-world behaviour of the complex automata networks. Pattern formation of cellular automata networks and the comparison with equation-based reaction-diffusion systems are also discussed

Abstract:Elementary cellular automata (ECA) are one-dimensional discrete models of computation with a small memory set that have gained significant interest since the pioneer work of Stephen Wolfram, who studied them as time-discrete dynamical systems. Each of the 256 ECA is labeled as rule $X$, where $X$ is an integer between $0$ and $255$. An important property, that is usually overlooked in computational studies, is that the composition of any two one-dimensional cellular automata is again a one-dimensional cellular automaton. In this chapter, we begin a systematic study of the composition of ECA. Intuitively speaking, we shall consider that rule $X$ has low complexity if the compositions $X \circ Y$ and $Y \circ X$ have small minimal memory sets, for many rules $Y$. Hence, we propose a new classification of ECA based on the compositions among them. We also describe all semigroups of ECA (i.e., composition-closed sets of ECA) and analyze their basic structure from the perspective of semigroup theory. In particular, we determine that the largest semigroups of ECA have $9$ elements, and have a subsemigroup of order $8$ that is $\mathcal{R}$-trivial, property which has been recently used to define random walks and Markov chains over semigroups.

Abstract:We explore some aspects of phase transitions in cellular automata. We start recalling the standard formulation of statistical mechanics of discrete systems (Ising model), illustrating the Monte Carlo approach as Markov chains and stochastic processes. We then formulate the cellular automaton problem using simple models, and illustrate different types of possible phase transitions: density phase transitions of first and second order, damage spreading, dilution of deterministic rules, asynchronism-induced transitions, synchronization phenomena, chaotic phase transitions and the influence of the topology. We illustrate the improved mean-field techniques and the phenomenological renormalization group approach.

Abstract:Elementary Cellular Automata (ECA) are a well-studied computational universe that is, despite its simple configurations, capable of impressive computational variety. Harvesting this computation in a useful way has historically shown itself to be difficult, but if combined with reservoir computing (RC), this becomes much more feasible. Furthermore, RC and ECA enable energy-efficient AI, making the combination a promising concept for Edge AI. In this work, we contrast ECA to substrates of Partially-Local CA (PLCA) and Homogeneous Homogeneous Random Boolean Networks (HHRBN). They are, in comparison, the topological heterogeneous counterparts of ECA. This represents a step from ECA towards more biological-plausible substrates. We analyse these substrates by testing on an RC benchmark (5-bit memory), using Temporal Derrida plots to estimate the sensitivity and assess the defect collapse rate. We find that, counterintuitively, disordered topology does not necessarily mean disordered computation. There are countering computational "forces" of topology imperfections leading to a higher collapse rate (order) and yet, if accounted for, an increased sensitivity to the initial condition. These observations together suggest a shrinking critical range.
