Abstract:A quantum-eraser experiment is reported with photon pairs generated by two synchronously pumped parametric down converters coupled via induced coherence. The complementarity between which-source information and two-photon interference fringe visibility has been investigated by two coupled interferometers.

Abstract:The quantum eraser effect exemplifies the distinct properties of quantum mechanics that challenge classical intuition and expose the wave-particle duality of light. This effect has been extensively explored in various experiments; most of these investigations use polarisation to distinguish which path information, and less attention has been paid to the phase structure which is related wavefront of photon. In this study, we introduce a theoretical framework for quantum erasure that focusses on the phase structure and demonstrate it experimentally. In this experiment, we employ a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) where a first-order spiral phase plate (SPP) is integrated into one of its arms. This setup applied orbital angular momentum (OAM) to the photons and established predetermined which-way information. Consequently, the photon demonstrates its particle characteristics, with absence of interference at the MZI's output ports. Utilizing an additional SPP to erase the phase structure from the output photon results in pronounced interference patterns, observable in a post-measurement scenario. This result allows us to include the structure information of the equiphase plane of the light field in quantum erasure. The results challenge the traditional cause-effect relationship in classical physics, given that the subsequent choice of the SPP adheres to a space-like separation.

Abstract:The delayed-choice quantum eraser has been intensively studied for the wave-particle duality of a single photon in an interferometric system over the last decades. Coincidence measurements between quantum erasers have also been applied for the nonlocal quantum feature, satisfying the Bell inequality violation. However, those quantum features have not been clearly understood yet, resulting in the quantum mystery. Recently a coherence approach has been tried for the quantum eraser to unveil the quantum mystery. Here, a phase quantization of higher-order intensity products between coherently controlled quantum erasers is presented using a quarter wave plate-induced phase shift between orthogonal polarization bases of a single photon. Theoretical solutions of both photonic-de-Broglie-wave-like quantum features and nonlocal quantum correlations are presented for further discussions of quantum mechanics.

Abstract:Quantum superposition is the cornerstone of quantum mechanics, where interference fringes originate in the self-interference of a single photon via indistinguishable photon characteristics. Wheeler's delayed-choice experiments have been extensively studied for the wave-particle duality over the last several decades to understand the complementarity theory of quantum mechanics. The heart of the delayed-choice quantum eraser is in the mutually exclusive quantum feature violating the cause-effect relation. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the quantum eraser using coherent photon pairs by the delayed choice of a polarizer placed out of the interferometer. Coherence solutions of the observed quantum eraser are derived from a typical Mach-Zehnder interferometer, where the violation of the cause-effect relation is due to selective measurements of basis choice.

Abstract:Quantum interference is a central resource in many quantum-enhanced tasks, from computation to communication. While usually occurring between identical photons, it can also be enabled by performing projective measurements that render the photons indistinguishable, a process known as quantum erasing. Structured light forms another hallmark of photonics, achieved by manipulating the degrees of freedom of light, and enables a multitude of applications in both classical and quantum regimes. By combining these ideas, we design and experimentally demonstrate a simple and robust scheme that tailors quantum interference to engineer photonic states with spatially structured coalescence along the transverse profile, a type of quantum mode with no classical counterpart. To achieve this, we locally tune the distinguishability of a photon pair by spatially structuring the polarization and creating a structured quantum eraser. We believe that these spatially engineered multiphoton quantum states may be of significance in fields such as quantum metrology, microscopy, and communication.

Abstract:A nonlinear planar waveguide pumped by a beam orthogonal to its surface may serve as a versatile source of photon pairs. Changing pump-pulse duration, pump-beam transverse width, and angular decomposition of pump-beam frequencies characteristics of a photon pair including spectral widths of signal and idler fields, their time durations as well as degree of entanglement of two fields can be changed significantly. Using the measured spectral widths of the down-converted fields and width of a coincidence-count dip in a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer entropy of entanglement can be determined.

Abstract:The counterintuitive features of quantum physics challenge many common-sense assumptions. In an interferometric quantum eraser experiment, one can actively choose whether or not to erase which-path information, a particle feature, of one quantum system and thus observe its wave feature via interference or not by performing a suitable measurement on a distant quantum system entangled with it. In all experiments performed to date, this choice took place either in the past or, in some delayed-choice arrangements, in the future of the interference. Thus in principle, physical communications between choice and interference were not excluded. Here we report a quantum eraser experiment, in which by enforcing Einstein locality no such communication is possible. This is achieved by independent active choices, which are space-like separated from the interference. Our setup employs hybrid path-polarization entangled photon pairs which are distributed over an optical fiber link of 55 m in one experiment, or over a free-space link of 144 km in another. No naive realistic picture is compatible with our results because whether a quantum could be seen as showing particle- or wave-like behavior would depend on a causally disconnected choice. It is therefore suggestive to abandon such pictures altogether.

Abstract:We present a computer simulation model that is a one-to-one copy of a quantum eraser experiment with photons (P. D. D. Schwindt et al., Phys. Rev. A 60, 4285 (1999)). The model is solely based on experimental facts, satisfies Einstein's criterion of local causality and does not require knowledge of the solution of a wave equation. Nevertheless, the simulation model reproduces the averages as obtained from the wave mechanical description of the quantum eraser experiment, proving that it is possible to give a particle-only description of quantum eraser experiments with photons. We demonstrate that although the visibility can be used as a measure for the interference, it cannot be used to quantify the wave character of a photon. The classical particle-like simulation model renders the concept of wave-particle duality, used to explain the outcome of the quantum eraser experiment with photons, superfluous.
A macroscopic delayed-choice quantum eraser using a commercial laser

Abstract:The heart of quantum mechanics is quantum superposition between orthogonal bases of a single particle. In the particle nature of quantum mechanics, quantum superposition is represented by probability amplitudes between mutually exclusive natures such as orthogonal polarization bases. The delayed-choice quantum eraser is for the post-determination of the photon nature, raising the cause-effect relation issue. Over the last several decades, quantum erasers have been intensively studied using nearly all kinds of photons. Here, the macroscopic delayed-choice quantum eraser is experimentally demonstrated using a continuous wave laser and discussed for quantum superposition in a macroscopic regime. For this, a noninterfering Mach-Zehnder interferometer composed of two polarizing beam splitters is chosen to manipulate polarization bases of lights and to measure them in a delayed-choice manner via polarization-basis projection.

Coherently excited nonlocal quantum features using polarization-frequency correlation between quantum erasers

Abstract:Photon indistinguishability is an essential concept to understanding mysterious quantum features from the viewpoint of the wave-particle duality in quantum mechanics. The physics of indistinguishability lies in the manipulation of quantum superposition between orthonormal bases of a single photon such as in a quantum eraser. Here, a pure coherence approach is applied for the nonlocal correlation based on the polarization-frequency correlation of Poisson-distributed coherent photon pairs to investigate the role of measurements. For this, a gated heterodyne-detection technique is adopted for coincidence measurements between space-like separated delayed-choice quantum erasers, resulting in an inseparable basis product between them. For this coherently induced inseparable basis product, polarization-frequency correlated photon pairs are selectively measured through a dc-cut ac-pass filter to eliminate unwanted group of polarization-product bases. Finally, the Bell inequality violation is numerically confirmed for the coherence solutions of the nonlocal correlation.

Temporal quantum eraser: Fusion gates with distinguishable photons

Abstract:Linear-optics gates, the enabling tool of photonic quantum information processing, depend on indistinguishable photons, as they harness quantum interference to achieve nonlinear operations. Traditionally, meeting this criterion involves generating pure identical photons, a task that remains a significant challenge in the field. Yet, the required indistinguishability is linked to the spatial exchange symmetry of the multiphoton wavefunction and does not strictly necessitate identical photons. Here, we show that the ideal operation of two-photon gates, particularly fusion gates, can be recovered from distinguishable photons by ensuring the exchange symmetry of the input photonic state. To this end, we introduce a temporal quantum eraser between a pair of modally-impure single-photon sources, which heralds the symmetry of the generated two-photon state. We demonstrate this mechanism in two relevant platforms: parametric photon pair generation and single-photon extraction by a single quantum emitter. The ability to lift the requirement for identical photons bears considerable potential in linear-optics quantum information processing.

Abstract:The effect known as ``induced coherence without induced emission'' has spawned a field dedicated to imaging with undetected photons (IUP), where photons from two distinct photon-pair sources interfere if their outputs are made indistinguishable. The indistinguishability is commonly achieved in two setups. Induced coherence IUP (IC-IUP) has only the idler photons from the first source passing through the second, whilst nonlinear interferometry (NI-IUP) has both signal and idler photons from the first source passing through the second and can be simpler to implement. In both cases, changes in the idler path between sources can be detected by measuring the interference fringes in the signal path in a way that allows image information to be moved between different wavelengths. Here we model and implement a novel setup that uses a polarization state quantum eraser approach to move continuously between IC-IUP and NI-IUP operation. We find excellent agreement between experiment and theory in the low-gain or quantum regime. The system also provides a new route for optimizing IUP interference by using controllable quantum erasure to balance the interferometer.

Coherently excited superresolution using intensity product of phase-controlled quantum erasers via polarization-basis projection measurements

Abstract:Recently, the delayed-choice quantum eraser has been applied for coherently excited superresolution using phase-controlled projection measurements of laser light to overcome the diffraction limit in classical physics as well as to solve the limited photon number of the N00N state in quantum physics. Unlike other methods of phase-controlled superresolution in a noninterferometric system, the proposed method is for the intensity products between phase-controlled quantum erasers, resulting in superresolution compatible with the most conventional sensing metrologies. Here, a general scheme of the phase-controlled quantum eraser-based superresolution is proposed and its general solution is derived for an arbitrary Nth-order intensity correlation, where the superresolution shows the photonic de Broglie wave-like quantum feature. Furthermore, phase quantization of the superresolution is discussed to better understand quantum mechanics.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement is known as a unique feature of quantum mechanics, which cannot be obtained from classical physics. Recently, a coherence interpretation has been conducted for the delayed-choice quantum eraser using coherent photon pairs, where phase-locked symmetric frequency detuning between paired photons plays an essential role for selective measurement-caused nonlocal correlation. Here, a macroscopic version of the nonlocal correlation is presented using orthogonally polarized optical fields in a continuous wave quantum eraser scheme in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). The resulting polarization projection of each MZI output fields onto a rotated polarizer satisfies the violation of the cause-effect relation. Based on this macroscopic quantum eraser, the intensity product between two projected output fields satisfies the inseparable joint-parameter relation if the intensity product is selectively measured through a low pass filter to block beating signals between them.

Abstract:A new quantum eraser setup exploiting for the first time the time-energy complementarity relation in the x-ray regime is investigated theoretically. Starting point is the interference process between x-ray quanta driving two nuclear hyperfine transitions in a nuclear forward scattering setup. We show that which-way information can be obtained by marking the scattering paths with orthogonal polarization states, thus leading to the disappearance of the interference pattern. In turn, erasure of the which-way information leads to the reappearance of the interference fringes. We put forward two schemes using resonant scattering off nuclear targets and design which-way marking procedures to realize the quantum eraser setup for x-ray quanta.

Abstract:We present a conditional quantum eraser which erases the a priori knowledge or the predictability of the path a photon takes in a Young-type double-slit experiment with two fluorescent four-level atoms. This erasure violates a recently derived erasure relation which must be satisfied for a conventional, unconditional quantum eraser that aims to find an optimal sorting of the system into subensembles with particularly large fringe visibilities. The conditional quantum eraser employs an interaction-free, partial which-way measurement which not only sorts the system into optimal subsystems with large visibility but also selects the appropriate subsystem with the maximum possible visibility. We explain how the erasure relation can be violated under these circumstances.

Abstract:Motivated by a recent experiment by Buks et al. [Nature 391, 871 (1998)] we consider electron transport through an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer with a quantum dot in one of its arms. The quantum dot is coupled to a quantum system with a finite number of states acting as a which-path detector. The Aharonov-Bohm interference is calculated using a two-particle scattering approach for the joint transitions in detector and quantum dot. Tracing over the detector yields dephasing and a reduction of the interference amplitude. We show that the interference can be restored by a suitable measurement on the detector and propose a mesoscopic quantum eraser based on this principle.
