Abstract:The Earth's magnetosphere is the outermost layer of the geospace system deflecting energetic charged particles from the Sun and solar wind. The solar wind has major impacts on the Earth's magnetosphere, but it is unclear whether the same holds for solar flares—a sudden eruption of electromagnetic radiation on the Sun. Here we use a recently developed whole geospace model combined with observational data from the 6 September 2017 X9.3 solar flare event to reveal solar flare effects on magnetospheric dynamics and on the electrodynamic coupling between the magnetosphere and its adjacent ionosphere, the ionized part of Earth's upper atmosphere. We observe a rapid and large increase in flare-induced photoionization of the polar ionospheric E-region at altitudes between 90 km and 150 km. This reduces the efficiency of mechanical energy conversion in the dayside solar wind–magnetosphere interaction, resulting in less Joule heating of the Earth's upper atmosphere, a reconfiguration of magnetosphere convection, as well as changes in dayside and nightside auroral precipitation. This work thus demonstrates that solar flare effects extend throughout the geospace via electrodynamic coupling, and are not limited—as previously believed—to the atmospheric region where radiation energy is absorbed<sup><a href="/articles/s41567-021-01203-5#ref-CR1">1</a></sup>.

Abstract:Solar flares significantly impact the conditions of the Earth’s ionosphere. In particular, the sudden increase in X-ray flux during a flare penetrates down to the lowest-lying D-region and dominates ionization at these altitudes (≈60\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$\approx60$\end{document} – 100 km). Measurements of very low frequency (VLF: 3 – 30 kHz) radio waves that reflect at D-region altitudes provide a unique remote-sensing probe to investigate the D-region response to solar-flare emissions. Here, using a combination of VLF amplitude measurements at 24 kHz together with X-ray observations from the Geostationary Operational Environment Satellite (GOES) X-ray sensor, we present a large-scale statistical study of 334 solar-flare events and their impacts on the D-region over the past solar cycle. Focusing on both GOES broadband X-ray channels, we investigate how the flare peak fluxes and position on the solar disk dictate an ionospheric response and extend this to investigate the characteristic time delay between incident X-ray flux and the D-region response. We show that the VLF amplitude linearly correlates with both the 1 – 8 Å and 0.5 – 4 Å channels, with correlation coefficients of 0.80 and 0.79, respectively. For the two X-class flares in our sample, however, there appears to be a turnover in the linear relationship, similar to previous works. Unlike higher altitude ionospheric regions for which the location of the flare on the solar disk affects the ionospheric response, we find that the D-region response to solar flares does not depend on the flare location. By comparing the time delays between the peak X-ray fluxes in both GOES channels and VLF amplitudes, we find that there is an important difference between the D-region response and the X-ray spectral band. We also demonstrate for several flare events that show a negative time delay, the peak VLF amplitude matches with the impulsive 25 – 50 keV hard X-ray fluxes measured by the Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI). These results highlight the importance of performing full spectral analysis when studying the ionospheric responses to solar flares.

Abstract:Effects of the extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) late phase of solar flares on the ionosphere were rarely studied. Here we simulated such effects on the ionospheric electron density using an ionosphere−thermosphere coupled model driven by the realistic solar spectrum observed during the X1.8 flare on 2012 October 23. Global total electron content (TEC) observations and simulations showed that the dayside ionospheric TEC during the EUV late phase increased more than that of the flare's main phase. We examined the performance of the model for flares with EUV late phase. The results showed that the F-region electron density enhancement and recovery did not vary in the same pace as the temporal variations of the EUV late phase, and the presence of the EUV late phase prolonged the recovery of electron density by ∼9 hr. We also found that the enhancement in electron density was mainly determined by the chemical production, while the recovery of electron density was primarily controlled by the electric field transport effects. This study enhanced understanding of the intricate physical and photochemical processes governing Earth's space environment and similar planetary systems during solar flare events with EUV late phase.

Analysis of the Solar Flare Effects of 6 September 2017 in the Ionosphere and in the Earth's Magnetic Field Using Spherical Elementary Current Systems

Abstract:The interval 4–10 September 2017 was one of the most flare‐productive periods of the solar cycle 24, producing strong‐to‐severe space weather episodes. Thus, on 6 September, the solar active region AR 30023 produced an X‐9 level flare. The arrival of the associated coronal mass ejection produced severe geomagnetic storming on 7 and 8 September, preceded by two significant solar flare effects (Sfe) that could be seen in the lit hemisphere. In this article, we analyze the impact of these flares on the ionosphere as registered on the vertical incidence ionospheric sounder located at Ebre Observatory. We put the emphasis on the use of this instrument to detect solar flares by means of the absorption observed in its ionograms. We also analyze the impacts of these flares on the Earth's magnetic field and the temporal evolution of the second Sfe event using the technique of spherical elementary current systems, which allows tracing in detail the current system evolution during the Sfe lifetime. As expected, a sharp increase in current intensities occurred at the beginning. The peak of the disturbance was reached after a few minutes, when hard X‐rays were dominant, while a slow decay followed the advent of soft X‐rays and EUV rays. The modeled current systems appear abnormally displaced in longitude with respect to the subsolar point. The northern vortex shows up about 2 hr in advance of the subsolar point meridian, while the southern vortex is about 3 hr behind it. Both remain static, showing no significant shift over the whole episode. Although the event occurred during the equinox, a clear prevalence of the Northern Hemisphere was observed. Abstract:The strongest X-class solar flare (SF) event in 24th solar cycle, X9.3, occurred on 6 September 2017, accompanied by earthward-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Such space weather episodes are known to cause various threats to human activities ranging from radio communication and navigation disturbances including wave blackout to producing geomagnetic storms of different intensities. In this study, SFs' ionospheric impacts and effects of accompanied heliospheric disturbances on primary cosmic rays (CR) are investigated. This work offers the first detailed investigation of characteristics of these extreme events since they were inspected both from the perspective of their electromagnetic nature, through very low frequency (VLF) radio waves, and their corpuscular nature of CR by multi-instrumental approach. Aside data recorded by Belgrade VLF and CR stations, data from GOES and SOHO space probes were used for modeling and analysis. Conducted numerical simulations revealed a significant change of ionospheric parameters (sharpness and effective reflection height) and few orders of magnitude increase of electron density. We compared our findings with those existing in the literature regarding the ionospheric response and corresponding parameters. In addition, Forbush decrease (FD) magnitude, corrected for magnetospheric effect, derived from measurements, and one predicted from power exponents used to parametrize the shape of energetic proton fluence spectra at L1 were compared and found to be in good agreement. Presented findings could be useful for investigation of atmospheric plasma properties, particles' modeling, and prediction of extreme weather impacts on human activities.

Abstract:ABSTRACT An analysis of solar flares with simple temporal structures can help us to understand the features and mechanisms of energy and particle propagation. A weak impulsive solar flare that occurred on 2021 June 3 provided such opportunity. For the purposes of the study, we used microwave observations with spatial resolution from the Siberian Radioheliograph (3–6 GHz) combined with various spectral radio and X-ray data. Flare topology analysis revealed a configuration consisting of a small loop or dome-like structure associated with a compact bright source, and a long high loop system associated with the diffuse source. This indicates a compact and relatively low-lying site of acceleration and initial energy release. The radio metre and the microwave emission demonstrated a peak-to-peak correlation in three of the four bursts. The delays obtained from comparing microwave and metre radio ranges are in good agreement with the delays from the metre dynamic spectrum analysis, but the different radio bursts had different delays. We found that the electron energies derived from metre dynamic spectrum analysis are lower than those shown by hard X-ray emissions. According to the results of theoretical simulations, this can be explained by the expansion of magnetic loops with altitude. The difference in drift velocities for various radio bursts can be the result of the different size of the loop where the electron beams are propagated. This can be a feature related to the configuration type of the studied flare.

Abstract:It is known that solar flares can affect the current system of the middle- and low-latitude ionosphere. Most earlier studies have focused on such effects during their impulsive phases. Recent studies have reported flares with a significant extreme ultraviolet (EUV) late phase, the effects of which on ionospheric currents have not yet been investigated. Here, we examine the solar quiet (Sq) currents and equatorial electrojets during two X-class flares with EUV late phases using data from more than 200 ground magnetometers. Our results indicate that the ionospheric currents could be significantly enhanced during the impulsive phase, while the effects of the EUV late phase may increase the global ionospheric currents, but are often weak and thus could be obscured by a change in solar wind conditions. In the X1.8 flare event on 2012 October 23, besides the solar flare effects, the currents were modulated by solar wind pressure. In the X1.3 flare event on 2014 April 25, the solar wind pressure was weak and stable, and the Sq currents were enhanced compared to nonflare conditions. We also found that even weak changes in the solar wind dynamic pressure, with magnitudes as low as ∼2 nPa, which are often ignored, may have an appreciable impact on the global ionospheric current system.

Statistic Study on Asymmetric Propagation of Flare-Associated Interplanetary Shock-Waves

Abstract:On the basis of the comprehensive studies of solar flare-associated geophysical effects (geomagnetic disturbances and the Forbush decreases of cosmic rays), multi-spacecraft observations of solar wind and interplanetary scintillation (IPS) observations, we have furthered our knowledge of the flare-shock wave propagation in the interplanetary space. The main results are that the flare-shock wave is usually an asymmetric propagation related to the flare normal, the direction of the fastest propagation velocity in longitudes tends to deflect towards the interplanetary spiral magnetic field and that in latitudes approaches heliospheric, current sheet, the dynamic parameters (V, P, N, T, β, etc.) and the. shock wave energy. E, are higher in the southeast than in the northwest of the flare shock wave, and conversely, the magnetic field is weaker in the southeast than in the northwest. Based on the results, we proposed a 3-dimensional asymmetrical model of flare-shock wave propagationst. This model is consistent with recent statistical studies obtained by analysing a great deal of spacecraft observation data, and may naturally explain the asymmetric distribution of geomagnetical effects in company with the parent flare positions. The results of this paper could help develop the propagation theory of shock waves and the prediction of the solar-terrestrial disturbance events.

Abstract:Previous investigations of ionospheric electrodynamical responses to solar flares primarily focused on the main phases (MPs) of solar flares. Typical solar irradiance models for driving global ionosphere models do not include the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) late phase (ELP) of flares, which was recently observed with new high-quality solar EUV spectra. Thus, it is still unclear how ionospheric electrodynamics respond to the flare ELP. Here, we analyzed the ionospheric electrodynamical response to the MP and ELP of the X9.3 flare on 2017 September 6, using observations from ground magnetometers, along with simulation results from an ionosphere–thermosphere coupled model. Observations indicated an intensification of the dayside eastward equatorial electrojet (EEJ) by approximately 12 nT at the ELP peak as compared to the quiet day reference. Additionally, the dayside eastward electric field increased due to the ELP, which is different from the reduction of dayside electric fields during MP. The upward E × B plasma drifts decreased by 2.5 m s –1 during MP but increased by 0.75 m s –1 during the ELP. Altitude-dependent responses of ionospheric conductivities to the ELP modulated the relative contribution of the E- and F-region wind dynamo to zonal electric fields, resulting in an overall increase in the daytime eastward electric fields. Furthermore, combined effects of electric fields and conductivities enhancements contributed to EEJ intensification during the ELP. This study enhances our understanding of how solar flares with ELP change global ionospheric electric fields and currents.

Abstract:The response of the global ionosphere to solar flares is an important topic in the field of space weather. The global ionospheric response to solar flares is comprehensively analyzed from the perspectives of total electron content (TEC) and very low frequency (VLF) signals by using solar flare data on the eruption days of X-class flares from 2006 to 2019, including flare level, flare duration, geographical location, and local time. In addition, the relationship between X-ray flux and VLF phase variation is studied through correlation analysis. The concepts of disturbance intensity (DI) and disturbance angle are defined, and a DI evaluation model is established to help detect the difference in sensitivity to solar flares between TEC and VLF signals. Results show the following. (1) The higher the flare level and the longer the duration, the greater the disturbance to the ionosphere. Simultaneously, a phenomenon exists in which the disturbance caused by low-level and long-lasting flares is greater than that caused by high-level flares. (2) VLF phase variation and flare level exhibit a good correlation, and they are also closely related to geographical location and local time. The disturbance degree of a station facing the sun is more evident than that of a station facing away from the sun. The TEC disturbance of stations in the morning (local time) is more obvious than that in the afternoon, and disturbance increases along the direction of Earth's rotation. (3) When DI is at the same level, the lowest flare level that causes TEC response is higher than the lowest flare level that causes VLF signal response. The disturbance angle of TEC is unevenly distributed within the interval [0°, 90°], and that of VLF signals is more than 85°. The sensitivity of VLF signals to flare response is considerably higher than that of TEC, and the difference between the two even stride across DI level.

Abstract:Solar flares can severely disturb the Earth's ionosphere, leading to changes of atmospheric chemistry and degradation of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals. The key to better assess these effects is to more accurately quantify the electron density enhancements induced by solar flares, which is still uncertain. Thanks to the good coverage and quiet electromagnetic environment provided by the Great Wall Station (GWS, 62.22°S, 58.96°W) in Antarctica, our Very‐Low‐Frequency (VLF) receiver has recorded clean VLF signatures produced by three X‐class solar flares from March to May in 2022. These measurements motivate us to revisit the uncertain question related to the ionospheric effects induced by solar flares. Different from previous studies, we model solar flare events from satellite measurements of X‐ray fluxes to ground‐based measurements of VLF transmitter signals by combining a flare irradiance model, an X‐ray propagation model, a D‐region chemistry model, and a VLF propagation model. For eight transmitting frequencies and propagation paths, modeling results can satisfactorily explain our VLF measurements at GWS during the three X‐class flares, especially so for the X1.3 event occurring on 30 March 2022. Moreover, the electron density results that reconcile space‐ and ground‐based measurements suggest that the VLF reflection height can be lowered to ∼66 km by an X1.1 flare, in line with previous studies. The present set of numerical models can be thus utilized in future studies to improve the nowcasting capability of VLF sensing technique for monitoring solar flares, as well as the accuracy of GNSS navigation/positioning during solar flares.

Energy Deposition into the Ionosphere during a Solar Flare with Extreme-ultraviolet Late Phase

Abstract:Solar extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) irradiance is the dominant energy source for ionizing and heating the Earth's upper atmosphere. It is common to assume that the spectra of different EUV lines have the same trend to fill the solar EUV irradiance gap for modeling purposes due to inadequate EUV irradiance measurements. However, the spectra across the EUV bands may not vary in the same trend. The flare radiation energy release in the EUV (10–120 nm) is about twice as much as X-rays (0.1–10 nm) during flare interval ∼03–06 UT on 2012 October 23. By assimilating the observed nonuniform varying, time-dependent, and high-resolution solar spectrum from the Solar Dynamics Observatory mission into the modeling framework, we provide the first direct evidence of nonuniform varying solar EUV fluxes during the solar flare EUV late phase (ELP) having appreciable effects on the dayside ionosphere. The total EUV radiation energy release (5.838 × 10 28 erg) during the flare ELP is larger than that (5.698 × 10 28 erg) during the flare main phase. The ELP of an X1.8-class solar flare on 2012 October 23 can increase the dayside ionospheric density at the subsolar point by ∼5 TECU and the ionospheric density enhancements extend from the bottom to the peak of the F2 region at low latitudes with relative changes ranging from ∼20% to ∼100%. Our results highlight the importance of incorporating a realistic, high spectral and temporal resolution solar irradiance spectrum into numerical models to capture the observed time-varying ionospheric response to solar flares.

Radio and X-ray Observations of Short-lived Episodes of Electron Acceleration in a Solar Microflare

Abstract:Solar flares are sudden energy release events in the solar corona, resulting from magnetic reconnection, that accelerates particles and heats the ambient plasma. During a flare, there are often multiple, temporally and spatially separated individual energy release episodes that can be difficult to resolve depending on the observing instrument. We present multi-wavelength imaging and spectroscopy observations of multiple electron acceleration episodes during a GOES B1.7-class two-ribbon flare on 2012 February 25, observed simultaneously with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at 1--2 GHz, the Reuven Ramatay High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) in X-rays, and the Solar Dynamics Observatory in extreme ultraviolet (EUV). During the initial phase of the flare, five radio bursts were observed. A nonthermal X-ray source was seen co-temporal, but not co-spatial, with the first three radio bursts. Their radio spectra are interpreted as optically thick gyrosynchrotron emission. By fitting the radio spectra with a gyrosynchrotron model, we derive the magnetic field strength and nonthermal electron spectral parameters in each acceleration episode. Notably, the nonthermal parameters derived from X-rays differ considerably from the nonthermal parameters inferred from the radio. The observations are indicative of multiple, co-temporal acceleration episodes during the impulsive phase of a solar microflare. The X-ray and radio burst sources likely originate from separate electron distributions in different magnetic loops.

The effect of wave-particle interactions on low energy cutoffs in solar flare electron spectra

Abstract:Solar flare hard X-ray spectra from RHESSI are normally interpreted in terms of purely collisional electron beam propagation, ignoring spatial evolution and collective effects. In this paper we present self-consistent numerical simulations of the spatial and temporal evolution of an electron beam subject to collisional transport and beam-driven Langmuir wave turbulence. These wave-particle interactions represent the background plasma's response to the electron beam propagating from the corona to chromosphere and occur on a far faster timescale than coulomb collisions. From these simulations we derive the mean electron flux spectrum, comparable to such spectra recovered from high resolution hard X-rays observations of solar flares with RHESSI. We find that a negative spectral index (i.e. a spectrum that increases with energy), or local minima when including the expected thermal spectral component at low energies, occurs in the standard thick-target model, when coulomb collisions are only considered. The inclusion of wave-particle interactions does not produce a local minimum, maintaining a positive spectral index. These simulations are a step towards a more complete treatment of electron transport in solar flares and suggest that a flat spectrum (spectral index of 0 to 1) down to thermal energies maybe a better approximation instead of a sharp cut-off in the injected electron spectrum.

A Flare-Type IV Burst Event from Proxima Centauri and Implications for Space Weather

Abstract:Studies of solar radio bursts play an important role in understanding the dynamics and acceleration processes behind solar space weather events, and the influence of solar magnetic activity on solar system planets. Similar low-frequency bursts detected from active M-dwarfs are expected to probe their space weather environments and therefore the habitability of their planetary companions. Active M-dwarfs produce frequent, powerful flares which, along with radio emission, reveal conditions within their atmospheres. However, to date, only one candidate solar-like coherent radio burst has been identified from these stars, preventing robust observational constraints on their space weather environment. During simultaneous optical and radio monitoring of the nearby dM5.5e star Proxima Centauri, we detected a bright, long-duration optical flare, accompanied by a series of intense, coherent radio bursts. These detections include the first example of an interferometrically detected coherent stellar radio burst temporally coincident with a flare, strongly indicating a causal relationship between these transient events. The polarization and temporal structure of the trailing long-duration burst enable us to identify it as a type IV burst. This represents the most compelling detection of a solar-like radio burst from another star to date. Solar type IV bursts are strongly associated with space weather events such as coronal mass ejections and solar energetic particle events, suggesting that stellar type IV bursts may be used as a tracer of stellar coronal mass ejections. We discuss the implications of this event for the occurrence of coronal mass ejections from Proxima Cen and other active M-dwarfs.

On the flare induced high-frequency global waves in the Sun

Abstract:Recently, Karoff and Kjeldsen (2008) presented evidence of strong correlation between the energy in the high-frequency part (5.3<\nu<8.3 mHz) of the acoustic spectrum of the Sun and the solar X-ray flux. They have used disk-integrated intensity observations of the Sun obtained from the VIRGO (Variability of solar IRradiance and Gravity Oscillations) instrument on board SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) spacecraft. Similar signature of flares in velocity observations has not been confirmed till now. The study of low-degree high-frequency waves in the Sun is important for our understanding of the dynamics of the deeper solar layers. In this paper, we present the analysis of the velocity observations of the Sun obtained from the MDI (Michelson and Doppler Imager) and the GOLF (Global Oscillations at Low Frequencies) instruments on board SOHO for some major flare events of the solar cycle 23. Application of wavelet techniques to the time series of disk-integrated velocity signals from the solar surface using the full-disk Dopplergrams obtained from the MDI clearly indicates that there is enhancement of high-frequency global waves in the Sun during the flares. This signature of flares is also visible in the Fourier Power Spectrum of these velocity oscillations. On the other hand, the analysis of disk-integrated velocity observations obtained from the GOLF shows only marginal evidence of effects of flares on high-frequency oscillations.

Abstract:The Near-Earth space environment is impacted by various radiation sources like galactic cosmic rays, solar storms, geomagnetic storms, etc. In the present paper, we have estimated the impact of space radiation observed during the last four cycles. We have observed that during solar cycle 24, there were fewer solar radiation storms than during its three preceding solar cycles. In terms of solar radiation storm strength, solar cycle 22 recorded a maximum intensity of S4 (severe radiation storm) of ~ 43000 pfu. In comparison, the maximum intensity of solar cycle 24 was ~ 6530 pfu (S3 type). We have concluded that the intensity of an X-class flare did not predict the intensity of the ensuing geomagnetic activity. The flares with less intensity in X-rays, e.g. M-class and C-class flares, can give rise to stronger radiation storms. Using the NOAA scales, we have compared the data of intense radiation storms with geomagnetic storms of higher intensity. This analysis has revealed that there were only 11 days during solar cycles 23 and 24 where the maximum solar radiation storm (solar particle event) coincided with a period of severe geomagnetic storming. On comparison of monthly neutron count (cosmic ray intensity) relative to the average of the last 20 years, we also deduced that the neutron count was 7.12% greater than usual during the most recent solar low, which was nearly as high as the last solar cycle lowest (8.20%). We have observed the lower probability rate of Solar Particle Events during the 3 or so years cantered on solar minimum, and the probability does not necessarily peak within a few years of solar maximum. The intensity of relativistic electrons observed by GOES in geostationary orbit was relatively low during periods of low geomagnetic activity and low solar wind speed, and the outer belt 2 MeV electrons flux appears to be highly associated with the Dst index.
