Abstract:We prove Korn's inequalities for Naghdi and Koiter shell models defined on spaces of discontinuous piecewise functions. They are useful in study of discontinuous finite element methods for shells.

Abstract:Detailed analysis shows that the famous Iyengar inequality actually says that the Trapezoidal formula is a central algorithm for approximating integrals over an appropriate interval for the class of functions whose derivatives are bounded by a positive number K in L ∞ -sense. The inherent nonlinearity from central algorithms reflects the importance of the Iyengar inequality and thus makes familiar linear methods malfunction when one tries to generalize it. It is shown that the generalization depends on a nonlinear system of equations satisfied by a set of free nodes of a perfect spline. Explicit constructions are obtained in the spirit of the Iyengar inequality for the class of functions whose r th ( r ≤4) derivatives are bounded by a positive number K in L ∞ -sense because a closed solution to the nonlinear system is only available for r ≤4. Connections with computational mathematics, especially with best interpolation and best quadrature, are discussed. Numerical experiments are also included.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the sharpness of a Korn's inequality for piecewise space and its applications. We first revisit a Korn's inequality for the piecewise space based on general polygonal or polyhedral decompositions of the domain. We express the Korn's inequality with minimal jump terms. Then we prove that such minimal jump conditions are sharp for achieving the Korn's inequality. The sharpness of the Korn's inequality and explicitly given minimal conditions can be used to test whether any given finite element spaces satisfy Korn's inequality, immediately as well as to build or modify nonconforming finite elements for Korn's inequality to hold.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish some observability inequalities from both boundary and distributed controls for the transmission of shallow shell with a middle surface of any shape. In particular, if only the boundary controls are allowed, we obtain the condition for the observability inequality on Young's modulus and Poisson's coefficient of the material which is similar as those in the case of wave and plate equations.

Abstract:We present a concise point of view on the first and the second Korn's inequality for general exponent $p$ and for a class of domains that includes Lipschitz domains. Our argument is conceptually very simple and, for $p = 2$, uses only the classical Riesz representation theorem in Hilbert spaces. Moreover, the argument for the general exponent $1<p<\infty$ remains the same, the only change being invoking now the $q$-Riesz representation theorem (with $q$ the harmonic conjugate of $p$). We also complement the analysis with elementary derivations of Poincaré-Korn inequalities in bounded and unbounded domains, which are essential tools in showing the coercivity of variational problems of elasticity but also propedeutic to the proof of the first Korn inequality.

Abstract:Korn's inequality plays an important role in linear elasticity theory. This inequality bounds the norm of the derivatives of the displacement vector by the norm of the linearized strain tensor. The kernel of the linearized strain tensor are the infinitesimal rigid-body translations and rotations (Killing vectors). We generalize this inequality by replacing the linearized strain tensor by its trace free part. That is, we obtain a stronger inequality in which the kernel of the relevant operator are the conformal Killing vectors. The new inequality has applications in General Relativity.

Abstract:This paper concerns the shell element formulation used for linear analysis. Introduction of hierarchical incompatible modes into the ordinary 8-node solid element is very effective to obtain the rational deflection-rotation relationship. An efficient revision scheme without using numerical volume integration is developed to ensure the satisfaction of the patch test. A lot of numerical tests are carried out for the validation of the present element. Numerical results show that the element can give satisfactory accuracy and convergence, especially for moderately thick shells. Copyright (C) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Using the error bound results established in the present paper for approximate solutions, we study the stability issues when perturbed by possibly nonaffine smooth maps E for the abstract inequality system F >=(K) 0 defined by a (possible nonclosed) convex cone K and a Frechet differentiable function F satisfying the (extended) weak gamma-condition. We provide some sufficient conditions, in terms of the information at a solution x(0), for ensuring the lower semicontinuity and/or the Lipschitz-like continuity at x(0) of the solution mapping for the perturbed system F + E >=(K) 0 with smooth perturbation E. Explicit upper bounds of the Lipschitz-like moduli are also provided.
On Fefferman--Stein type inequality on Shilov boundaries and applications

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the Fefferman--Stein type inequality for area integral and non-tangential maximal function on the Shilov boundary studied by Nagel and Stein in 2004. The technique here is inspired by Fefferman--Stein (1972) and Merryfield (1985) but we bypass the use of Fourier or group structure as these were not available on the polynomial domains of finite type. Direct applications include the maximal function characterisation of product Hardy space and the weak type endpoint estimate for product Calderón--Zygmund operators (such as the Cauchy--Szegő projection) on the Shilov boundary.

Abstract:We prove, for a class of first order differential operators that contains the Stein-Weiss, Dirac and Penrose twistor operators, a family of Kato inequalities that interpolates between the classical and the refined Kato. For the Hodge-de-Rham operator we get a more detailed result. As a corollary, we get various Kato inequalities from the literature.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish discrete versions of the Poincaré and trace inequalities for hybridizable finite element spaces. These spaces are made of piecewise polynomial functions defined both within the interiors of elements and across all faces in a mesh's skeleton, serving as the basis for both the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) and hybrid high-order (HHO) methods. Additionally, we present a specific adaptation of these inequalities for the HDG method and apply them to demonstrate the stability of the related numerical schemes for second-order elliptic equations under the minimal regularity assumptions for the source term and boundary data.

Abstract:By means of fixed point index theory for multi-valued maps, we provide an analogue of the classical Birkhoff--Kellogg Theorem in the context of discontinuous operators acting on affine wedges in Banach spaces. Our theory is fairly general and can be applied, for example, to eigenvalues and parameter problems for ordinary differential equations with discontinuities. We illustrate in details this fact for a class of second order boundary value problem with deviated arguments and discontinuous terms. In a specific example, we explicitly compute the terms that occur in our theory.

Abstract:We use an elementary method to obtain Nash-type inequalities for non-local Dirichlet forms on d-sets. We obtain two-sided estimates for the corresponding heat kernels if the walk dimensions of heat kernels are less than two; these estimates are obtained by combining probabilistic and analytic methods. Our arguments partly simplify those used in Chen and Kumagi (Heat kernel estimates for stable-like processes on d-sets.

Abstract:We prove disjointification inequalities due to Johnson and Schechtman for noncommutative random variables independent in the sense of Junge and Xu. In the same setting, we also prove noncommutative Khinchine inequalities. These inequalities are proved both for symmetric operator spaces and for modulars.

The extremals of the Kahn-Saks inequality

Abstract:A classical result of Kahn and Saks states that given any partially ordered set with two distinguished elements, the number of linear extensions in which the ranks of the distinguished elements differ by $k$ is log-concave as a function of $k$. The log-concave sequences that can arise in this manner prove to exhibit a much richer structure, however, than is evident from log-concavity alone. The main result of this paper is a complete characterization of the extremals of the Kahn-Saks inequality: we obtain a detailed combinatorial understanding of where and what kind of geometric progressions can appear in these log-concave sequences. This settles a partial conjecture of Chan-Pak-Panova, while the analysis uncovers new extremals that were not previously conjectured. The proof relies on a much more general geometric mechanism -- a hard Lefschetz theorem for nef classes that was obtained in the setting of convex polytopes by Shenfeld and Van Handel -- which forms a model for the investigation of such structures in other combinatorial problems.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a kinetic Nash type inequality and adapt it to a new functional inequality for functions in a kinetic Sobolev space with absorbing boundary conditions on the half-space. As an application, we address the boundary behavior of the kinetic Fokker-Planck equations in the half-space. Our main result is the sharp regularity of the solution at the absorbing boundary and grazing set.
