Abstract:We prove a complex polynomial plank covering theorem for not necessarily homogeneous polynomials. As the consequence of this result, we extend the complex plank theorem of Ball to the case of planks that are not necessarily centrally symmetric and not necessarily round. We also prove a weaker version of the spherical polynomial plank covering conjecture for planks of different widths.

Abstract:We generalize a theorem of Bismut–Zhang, which extends the Cheeger–Müller theorem on Ray–Singer torsion and Reidemeister torsion, to the case of infinite Galois covering spaces. Our result is stated in the framework of extended cohomology, and generalizes in this case a recent result of Braverman–Carey–Farber–Mathai. It does not use the determinant class condition and thus also (potentially) generalizes several results on L2-torsions due to Burghelea, Friedlander, Kappeler and McDonald. We combine the framework developed by Braverman–Carey–Farber–Mathai on the determinant of extended cohomology with the heat kernel method developed in the original paper of Bismut–Zhang to prove our result.
A note on an effective characterization of covers with an application to higher rank representations

Abstract:In this note we prove an effective characterization of when two finite-degree covers of a connected, orientable surface of negative Euler characteristic are isomorphic in terms of which curves have simple elevations, weakening the hypotheses to consider curves with explicitly bounded self-intersection number. As an application we show that for sufficiently large N, the set of unmarked traces associated to simple closed curves in a generically chosen representation to SL(N, R) distinguishes between pairs of non-isomorphic covers.

Abstract:In this note we improve the theorem on Galois rational covers $X\dashrightarrow V$ for primitive Fano varieties $V$, recently proven by the author, in the two directions: we extend to the maximum the class of Galois groups $G$, for which the proof works, and relax the conditions that must be satisfied by the variety $V$ -- the divisorial canonicity alone is sufficient.

Covering Number of Real Algebraic Varieties and Beyond: Improved Bounds and Applications

Abstract:Covering numbers are a powerful tool used in the development of approximation algorithms, randomized dimension reduction methods, smoothed complexity analysis, and others. In this paper we prove upper bounds on the covering number of numerous sets in Euclidean space, namely real algebraic varieties, images of polynomial maps and semialgebraic sets in terms of the number of variables and degrees of the polynomials involved. The bounds remarkably improve the best known general bound by Yomdin-Comte, and our proof is much more straightforward. In particular, our result gives new bounds on the volume of the tubular neighborhood of the image of a polynomial map and a semialgebraic set, where results for varieties by Lotz and Basu-Lerario are not directly applicable. We illustrate the power of the result on three computational applications. Firstly, we derive a near-optimal bound on the covering number of low rank CP tensors, quantifying their approximation properties and filling in an important missing piece of theory for tensor dimension reduction and reconstruction. Secondly, we prove a bound on the required dimension for the randomized sketching of polynomial optimization problems, which controls how much computation can be saved through randomization without sacrificing solution quality. Finally, we deduce generalization error bounds for deep neural networks with rational or ReLU activation functions, improving or matching the best known results in the machine learning literature while helping to quantify the impact of architecture choice on generalization error.

Complex solutions of polynomial equations on the unit circle

Abstract:We explore systems of polynomial equations where we seek complex solutions with absolute value 1. Geometrically, this amounts to understanding intersections of algebraic varieties with tori -- Cartesian powers of the unit circle. We study the properties of varieties in which this intersection is Zariski dense, give a criterion for Zariski density and use it to show that the problem is decidable. This problem is a ``continuous'' analogue of the Manin-Mumford conjecture for the multiplicative group of complex numbers, however, the results are very different from Manin-Mumford. While the results of the paper appear to be new, the proofs are quite elementary. This is an expository article aiming to introduce some classical mathematical topics to a general audience. We also list some exercises and problems at the end for the curious reader to further explore these topics.

About almost covering subsets of the hypercube

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a field, and consider the hypercube $\{ 0, 1 \}^{n}$ in $\mathbb{F}^{n}$. Sziklai and Weiner (Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 2022) showed that if a polynomial $P ( X_{1}, \dots, X_{n} ) \in \mathbb{F}[ X_{1}, \dots, X_{n}]$ vanishes on every point of the hypercube $\{0,1\}^{n}$ except those with at most $r$ many ones then the degree of the polynomial will be at least $n-r$. This is a generalization of Alon and Füredi's fundamental result (European Journal of Combinatorics 1993) about polynomials vanishing on every point of the hypercube except at the origin (point with all zero coordinates). Sziklai and Weiner proved their interesting result using Möbius inversion formula and the Zeilberger method for proving binomial equalities. In this short note, we show that a stronger version of Sziklai and Weiner's result can be derived directly from Alon and Füredi's result.

On Covering Radii in Function Fields

Abstract:In this paper, we shall discuss topics in geometry of numbers in the positive characteristic setting, such as covering radii. We find a closed form for covering radii with respect to convex bodies, which will lead to a proof of the positive characteristic analogue of Woods' conjecture in this setting. Then, we will prove a positive characteristic analogue of Minkowski's conjecture about the multiplicative covering radius. To do this, we shall prove a positive characteristic analogue of Solan's result that every diagonal orbit intersects the set of well rounded lattices. This implies that the Gruber-Mordell spectrum in positive characteristic is trivial in every dimension.

Abstract:We study the question how many subgroups, cosets or subspaces are needed to cover a finite Abelian group or a vector space if we have some natural restrictions on the structure of the covering system. For example we determine, how many cosets we need, if we want to cover all but one element of an Abelian group. This result is a group theoretical extension of the theorem of Brouwer, Jamison and Schrijver about the blocking number of an affine space. We show that these covering problems are closely related to combinatorial problems, including the so called additive basis conjecture, the three-flow conjecture, and a conjecture of Alon, Jaeger and Tarsi about nowhere zero vectors.

Abstract:We discuss the Gelfand-Kazhdan criterion for covering groups with abelian covering tori and also investigate several aspects of the local coefficients matrix for genuine principal series representations of coverings of SL2. The goal is to carry out some preliminary study on some invariants attached to the local coefficients matrix, with a view toward a theory of gamma-factors and L-functions for genuine representations of covering groups.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the holomorphic convexity of the covering of a complex projective {normal} variety $X$, which corresponds to the intersection of kernels of reductive representations $\rho:\pi_1(X)\to {\rm GL}_{N}(\mathbb{C})$, therefore answering a question by Eyssidieux, Katzarkov, Pantev, and Ramachandran in 2012. It is worth noting that Eyssidieux had previously proven this result in 2004 when $X$ is smooth. While our approach follows the general strategy employed in Eyssidieux's proof, it introduces several improvements and simplifications. Notably, it avoids the necessity of using the reduction mod $p$ method in Eyssidieux's original proof. Additionally, we construct the Shafarevich morphism for complex reductive representations of fundamental groups of complex quasi-projective varieties unconditionally, and proving its algebraic nature at the function field level.

Abstract:The conjectured squarefree density of an integral polynomial P in s variables is an Euler product SP which can be considered as a product of local densities. We show that a necessary and sufficient condition for SP to be 0 when P∈Z(X1,...,Xs) is a polynomial in s variables over the integers, is that either there is a prime p such that the values of P at all integer points are divisible by p2 or the polynomial is not squarefree as a polynomial. We also show that generally the upper squarefree density DP satisfies DP⩽SP .

Additive covers and the Canonical Base Property

Abstract:We give a new approach to the failure of the Canonical Base Property (CBP) in the so far only known counterexample, produced by Hrushovski, Palacin and Pillay. For this purpose, we will give an alternative presentation of the counterexample as an additive covers of an algebraically closed field. We isolate two fundamental weakenings of the CBP, which already appeared in work of Chatzidakis, and show that they do not hold in the counterexample. In order to do so, a study of imaginaries in additive covers is developed, for elimination of finite imaginaries yields a connection to the CBP. As a by-product of the presentation, we notice that no pure Galois-theoretic account of the CBP can be provided.

A Note about Weyl Equidistribution Theorem

Abstract:H. Weyl proved in \cite{Weyl} that integer evaluations of polynomials are equidistributed mod 1 whenever at least one of the non-free coefficients is irrational. We use Weyl's result to prove a higher dimensional analogue of this fact. Namely, we prove that evaluations of polynomials on lattice points are equidistributed mod 1 whenever at least one of the non-free coefficients is irrational. This result strengths the main result of Arhipov-Karacuba-Čubarikov in \cite{PolWeyl}. We prove this analogue as a Corollary of a Theorem that guarantees equidistribution of lattice evaluations mod 1 for all functions which satisfy some restrains on their derivatives. Another Corollary we prove is that for $p\in(1,\infty)$ the $\ell^p$ norms of integer vectors are equidistributed mod 1.

Abstract:We prove a theorem on distortion of cross ratio of four points under the mapping effected by a complex polynomial with restricted critical values. Its corollaries include inequalities involving the absolute value and certain coefficients of a polynomial. In particular, an exact lower bound is established for maximal moduli of critical values of polynomials $P$ of degree $n$ normalized by $P(0)=0$, $P'(0)\ne0$.

Abstract:Let $\alpha$ be a non-zero algebraic number. Let $K$ be the Galois closure of $\mathbb{Q}(\alpha)$ with Galois group $G$ and $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ be the algebraic closure of $\mathbb{Q}$. In this article, among the other results, we prove the following. If $f\in \bar{\mathbb{Q}}[G]$ is a non-zero element of the group ring $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}[G]$ and $\alpha$ is a given algebraic number such that $f(\alpha^n)$ is a non-zero algebraic integer for infinitely many natural numbers $n$, then $\alpha$ is an algebraic integer. This result generalizes the result of Polya [11], Corvaja and Zannier [2] and Philippon and Rath [9]. We also prove the analogue of this result for rational functions with algebraic coefficients. Inspired by a result of B. de Smit [4], we prove a finite version of the Polya type result for a binary recurrence sequences of non-zero algebraic numbers. In order to prove these results, we apply the techniques of Corvaja and Zannier along with the results of Kulkarni et al., [6] which are applications of the Schmidt subspace theorem.

Abstract:We introduce the concepts of an amazing hypercube decomposition and a double shortcut for it, and use these new ideas to formulate a conjecture implying the Combinatorial Invariance Conjecture of the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials for the symmetric group. This conjecture has the advantage of being combinatorial in nature.
