A key ingredient is the arithmetic equidistribution theorem on $\mathbb{P}^1$ of Baker-Rumely, Chambert-Loir, and Favre-Rivera-Letelier. Torsion points on the elliptic curve coincide with preperiodic points for the degree-4 Lattes family of rational functions. Our main new results concern properties of the bifurcation measures for this Lattes family associated to marked points.
Classification of torsion of elliptic curves over quartic fields

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over a quartic field $K$. By the Mordell-Weil theorem, $E(K)$ is a finitely generated group. We determine all the possibilities for the torsion group $E(K)_{tor}$ where $K$ ranges over all quartic fields $K$ and $E$ ranges over all elliptic curves over $K$. We show that there are no sporadic torsion groups, or in other words, that all torsion groups either do not appear or they appear for infinitely many non-isomorphic elliptic curves $E$. Proving this requires showing that numerous modular curves $X_1(m,n)$ have no non-cuspidal degree $4$ points. We deal with almost all the curves using one of 3 methods: a method for the rank 0 cases requiring no computation, the Hecke sieve; a local method requiring computer-assisted computations and the Derickx-Stoll method; a global argument for the positive rank cases also requiring no computation. We deal with the handful of remaining cases using ad hoc methods.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field, and let $E/K$ be an elliptic curve over $K$. The Mordell--Weil theorem asserts that the $K$-rational points $E(K)$ of $E$ form a finitely generated abelian group. In this work, we complete the classification of the finite groups which appear as the torsion subgroup of $E(K)$ for $K$ a cubic number field. To do so, we determine the cubic points on the modular curves $X_1(N)$ for \[N = 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 28, 30, 32, 33, 35, 36, 39, 45, 65, 121.\] As part of our analysis, we determine the complete list of $N$ for which $J_0(N)$ (resp., $J_1(N)$, resp., $J_1(2,2N)$) has rank 0. We also provide evidence to a generalized version of a conjecture of Conrad, Edixhoven, and Stein by proving that the torsion on $J_1(N)(\mathbb{Q})$ is generated by $\text{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$-orbits of cusps of $X_1(N)_{\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}$ for $N\leq 55$, $N \neq 54$.

Abstract:In this paper we refine recent work due to A. Shankar, A. N. Shankar, and X. Wang on counting elliptic curves by conductor to the case of elliptic curves with a rational 2-torsion point. This family is a small family, as opposed to the large families considered by the aforementioned authors. We prove the analogous counting theorem for elliptic curves with so-called square-free index as well as for curves with suitably bounded Szpiro ratios. We note that our assumptions on the size of the Szpiro ratios is less stringent than would be expected by the naive generalization of their approach.

Abstract: The classification of elliptic curves E over the rationals Q is studied according to their torsion subgroups E_{tors}(Q) of rational points. Explicit criteria for the classification are given when E_{tors}(Q) are cyclic groups with even orders. The generator points P of E_{tors}(Q) are also explicitly presented in each case. These results, together with recent results of K. Ono, completely solve the problem of the mentioned explicit classification when E has a rational point of order 2.

Abstract:We study torsion subgroups of elliptic curves with complex multiplication (CM) defined over number fields which admit a real embedding. We give a complete classification of the groups which arise up to isomorphism as the torsion subgroup of a CM elliptic curve defined over a number field of odd degree: there are infinitely many. Restricting to the case of prime degree, we show that there are only finitely many isomorphism classes. More precisely, there are six "Olson groups" which arise as torsion subgroups of CM elliptic curves over number fields of every degree, and there are precisely 17 "non-Olson" CM elliptic curves defined over a prime degree number field.

Abstract:In 2016, Balakrishnan-Ho-Kaplan-Spicer-Stein-Weigandt produced a database of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ ordered by height in which they computed the rank, the size of the $2$-Selmer group, and other arithmetic invariants. They observed that after a certain point, the average rank seemed to decrease as the height increased. Here we consider the family of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose rational torsion subgroup is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}/8\mathbb{Z}$. Conditional on GRH and BSD, we compute the rank of $92\%$ of the $202461$ curves with parameter height less than $10^3$. We also compute the size of the $2$-Selmer group and the Tamagawa product, and prove that their averages tend to infinity for this family.

Abstract:For a prime number p, we characterize the groups that may arise as torsion subgroups of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication defined over a number field of degree 2p. In particular, our work shows that a classification in the strongest sense is tied to determining whether there exist infinitely many Sophie Germain primes.

Abstract:Let $T_{\mathrm{CM}}(d)$ denote the maximum size of a torsion subgroup of a CM elliptic curve over a degree $d$ number field. We initiate a systematic study of the asymptotic behavior of $T_{\mathrm{CM}}(d)$ as an "arithmetic function". Whereas a recent result of the last two authors computes the upper order of $T_{\mathrm{CM}}(d)$, here we determine the lower order, the typical order and the average order of $T_{\mathrm{CM}}(d)$ as well as study the number of isomorphism classes of groups $G$ of order $T_{\mathrm{CM}}(d)$ which arise as the torsion subgroup of a CM elliptic curve over a degree $d$ number field. To establish these analytic results we need to extend some prior algebraic results. Especially, if $E_{/F}$ is a CM elliptic curve over a degree $d$ number field, we show that $d$ is divisible by a certain function of $\# E(F)[\mathrm{tors}]$, and we give a complete characterization of all degrees $d$ such that every torsion subgroup of a CM elliptic curve defined over a degree $d$ number field already occurs over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Minimal torsion curves in geometric isogeny classes

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the study of minimal torsion curves within a fixed geometric isogeny class. For a $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-isogeny class $\mathcal{E}$ of elliptic curves and $N \in \mathbb{Z}^+$, we wish to determine the least degree of a point on the modular curve $X_1(N)$ associated to any $E \in \mathcal{E}$. In the present work, we consider the cases where $\mathcal{E}$ is rational, i.e., contains an elliptic curve with rational $j$-invariant, or where $\mathcal{E}$ consists of elliptic curves with complex multiplication (CM). If $N=\ell^k$ is a power of a single prime, we give a complete characterization upon restricting to points of odd degree, and also in the case where $\mathcal{E}$ is CM. We include various partial results in the more general setting.

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $p>3$ be a prime such that $p-1$ is not divisible by $3,4,5,7,11$. In this article we classify the groups that can arise as $E(\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_p))_{\text{tors}}$ up to isomorphism. The method illustrates techniques for eliminating possible structures that can appear as a subgroup of $E(\mathbb{Q}^{ab})_{\text{tors}}.$

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the possible torsion subgroups of twists of abelian varieties with good reduction. As an application, we prove a theorem concerning ramified primes over any quadratic extension where odd-order torsion growth is achieved. In particular, we show that for every rational elliptic curve and every imaginary quadratic field not equal to $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$ satisfying the Heegner hypothesis no odd-order torsion growth can occur.

Abstract:Working over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic we study, for integers $N\geq 2$ and $g\geq 2$, the set of points of order dividing $N$ lying on an irreducible smooth proper curve of genus $g$ embedded in its jacobian using a fixed base point. We discuss bounds on its cardinality and describe an efficient method for computing the set. Our method uses wronskians similar to those used in the study of Weierstrass points and the strength of our bounds is related to whether or not a certain multiple of the curve is contained in the negative of the theta divisor. Several examples are discussed. This generalizes our previous work [<a class="link-external link-https" href="https://doi.org/10.1216/rmj.2023.53.357" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>] dealing with the case of hyperelliptic curves embedded in their jacobian using a Weierstrass point as base point.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{O}$ be an order in the imaginary quadratic field $K$. For positive integers $M \mid N$, we determine the least degree of an $\mathcal{O}$-CM point on the modular curve $X(M,N)_{/K(\zeta_M)}$ and also on the modular curve $X(M,N)_{/\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_M)}$: that is, we treat both the case in which the complex multiplication is rationally defined and the case in which we do not assume that the complex multiplication is rationally defined. To prove these results we establish several new theorems on rational cyclic isogenies of CM elliptic curves. In particular, we extend a result of Kwon that determines the set of positive integers $N$ for which there is an $\mathcal{O}$-CM elliptic curve $E$ admitting a cyclic, $\mathbb{Q}(j(E))$-rational $N$-isogeny.

Low rank specializations of elliptic surfaces

Abstract:Let $E/\mathbb{Q}(T)$ be a non-isotrivial elliptic curve of rank $r$. A theorem due to Silverman implies that the rank $r_t$ of the specialization $E_t/\mathbb{Q}$ is at least $r$ for all but finitely many $t \in \mathbb{Q}$. Moreover, it is conjectured that $r_t \leq r+2$, except for a set of density $0$. In this article, when $E/\mathbb{Q}(T)$ has a torsion point of order $2$, under an assumption on the discriminant of a Weierstrass equation for $E/\mathbb{Q}(T)$, we produce an upper bound for $r_t$ that is valid for infinitely many $t$. We also present two examples of non-isotrivial elliptic curves $E/\mathbb{Q}(T)$ such that $r_t \leq r+1$ for infinitely many $t$.

Almost all elliptic curves with prescribed torsion have Szpiro ratio close to the expected value

Abstract:We demonstrate that almost all elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ with prescribed torsion subgroup, when ordered by naive height, have Szpiro ratio arbitrarily close to the expected value. We also provide upper and lower bounds for the Szpiro ratio that hold for almost all elliptic curves in certain one-parameter families. The results are achieved by proving that, given any multivariate polynomial within a general class, the absolute value of the polynomial over an expanding box is typically bounded by a fixed power of its radical. The proof adapts work of Fouvry--Nair--Tenenbaum, which shows that almost all elliptic curves have Szpiro ratio close to $1$.

Torsion phenomena for zero-cycles on a product of curves over a number field

Abstract:For a smooth projective variety $X$ over a number field $k$ a conjecture of Bloch and Beilinson predicts that the kernel of the Albanese map of $X$ is a torsion group. In this article we consider a product $X=C_1\times\cdots\times C_d$ of smooth projective curves and show that if the conjecture is true for any subproduct of two curves, then it is true for $X$. Additionally, we produce many new examples of non-isogenous elliptic curves $E_1, E_2$ with positive rank over $\mathbb{Q}$ for which the image of the natural map $E_1(\mathbb{Q})\otimes E_2(\mathbb{Q})\xrightarrow{\varepsilon} \text{CH}_0(E_1\times E_2)$ is finite, including the first known examples of rank greater than $1$. Combining the two results, we obtain infinitely many nontrivial products $X=C_1\times\cdots\times C_d$ for which the analogous map $\varepsilon$ has finite image.

Uniform polynomial bounds on torsion from rational geometric isogeny classes

Abstract:In 1996, Merel showed there exists a function $B\colon \mathbb{Z}^+\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}^+$ such that for any elliptic curve $E/F$ defined over a number field of degree $d$, one has the torsion group bound $\# E(F)[\textrm{tors}]\leq B(d)$. Based on subsequent work, it is conjectured that one can choose $B$ to be polynomial in the degree $d$. In this paper, we show that such bounds exist for torsion from the family $\mathcal{I}_{\mathbb{Q}}$ of elliptic curves which are geometrically isogenous to at least one rational elliptic curve. More precisely, we show that for each $\epsilon>0$ there exists $c_\epsilon>0$ such that for any elliptic curve $E/F\in \mathcal{I}_{\mathbb{Q}}$, one has \[ \# E(F)[\textrm{tors}]\leq c_\epsilon\cdot [F:\mathbb{Q}]^{5+\epsilon}. \] This generalizes prior work of Clark and Pollack, as well as work of the second author in the case of rational geometric isogeny classes.

Rational torsion on hyperelliptic jacobian varieties

Abstract:Fixing an integer $g\ge 2$, it was conjectured by Flynn that there exists a constant $\kappa$, independent of $g$, such that for every $m \le \kappa g$, there exists a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ over $\Q$ with a rational $m$-torsion point on its Jacobian. Leprévost proved this conjecture with $\kappa=3$. In this work we prove that given an integer $N$ in the interval $[3g,4g+1]$, $g\ge 3$, satisfying certain partition conditions, there exist infinite families of hyperelliptic Jacobian varieties with a rational torsion point of order $N$. In particular, we establish the existence of such varieties for $N=4g+1$ when $g$ is odd and for $N=4g-1$ when $g$ is even. A few explicit applications of this result produce the first known infinite examples of torsion $13$ when $g=3$, torsion $15$ when $g=4$, and torsion $17,18,21$ when $g=5$. In fact, we show that infinitely many of the latter abelian varieties are absolutely simple.
