Abstract:We discuss the ghost freeness in the case when we add matter coupled to two metrics to the ghost-free bigravity. In this paper we show that the Boulware-Deser ghost generally revives in the presence of doubly coupled matter and that ghost freeness strongly restricts the model of kinetically doubly coupled matter. This result may anticipate difficulties in the attempt to derive the ghost-free bigravity as a low-energy effective theory, starting with a model applicable at high energies.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### The problem the paper attempts to solve This paper attempts to solve the problem of whether the Boulware - Deser (BD) ghost mode will appear when introducing doubly - coupled matter fields in the bigravity theory. Specifically, the paper explores the ghost mode problem in the bigravity theory when the matter field is simultaneously coupled to two metrics. ### Background and motivation 1. **Bigravity theory**: - Bigravity theory is a gravitational theory that contains two dynamic metrics \( g_{\mu\nu} \) and \( f_{\mu\nu} \), and these two metrics interact through non - derivative interaction terms. - An important problem with this theory is that, due to the mass term of the graviton, an extra degree of freedom, namely the BD ghost mode, is usually introduced, which will lead to instability at the quantum level. 2. **Bigravity without ghost mode**: - Recent research has discovered a unique form of non - derivative interaction, which can avoid the appearance of the BD ghost mode in the case of a single non - dynamic reference metric. This theory is called the dRGT massive gravity theory. - Further research shows that this property of being ghost - free can be extended to the case where both metrics are dynamic. 3. **Doubly - coupled matter fields**: - When the matter field is simultaneously coupled to two metrics, the equivalence principle may be violated in theory, but this coupling is allowed in some cases. - However, whether this double coupling will re - introduce the BD ghost mode is an unsolved problem. ### Main research content 1. **Problem formulation**: - The main purpose of the paper is to explore whether the BD ghost mode will appear when introducing doubly - coupled matter fields in the bigravity theory without ghost mode. 2. **Methods and analysis**: - The authors study scalar perturbations in the Friedmann background and anisotropic background through detailed Hamiltonian analysis. - They consider different types of matter field couplings and judge whether there are extra degrees of freedom, especially ghost modes, by calculating the determinant of the kinetic energy matrix. 3. **Main results**: - The authors find that in general, when the matter field has two kinetic terms respectively coupled to two metrics, an extra degree of freedom will indeed appear, and in the limit of the Minkowski solution, this extra degree of freedom is a ghost mode. - This result means that in the case of doubly - coupled matter fields, the bigravity theory without ghost mode is severely restricted. ### Conclusion The paper concludes that in the bigravity theory without ghost mode, when the matter field is simultaneously coupled to two metrics, the BD ghost mode will generally be re - introduced. This result poses a challenge to the efforts to derive low - energy effective theories from high - energy theories, because the existence of ghost modes may lead to instability of the theory.
