Abstract:Bufetov, Bufetov-Forni and Bufetov-Solomyak have recently proved limit theorems for translation flows, horocycle flows and tiling flows, respectively. We present here analogous results for skew translations of a torus.

Abstract:We study the spectral statistics for quantized skew translations on the torus, which are ergodic but not mixing for irrational parameters. It is shown explicitly that in this case the level-spacing distribution and other common spectral statistics, like the number variance, do not exist in the semiclassical limit.

Abstract:We consider generalized $(T, T^{-1})$ transformations such that the base map satisfies a multiple mixing local limit theorem and anticoncentration large deviation bounds and in the fiber we have $\mathbb{R}^d$ actions with $d=1$ or $2$ which are exponentially mixing of all orders. If the skewing cocycle has zero drift, we show that the ergodic sums satisfy the same limit theorems as the random walks in random scenery studied by Kesten and Spitzer (1979) and Bolthausen (1989). The proofs rely on the quenched CLT for the fiber action and the control of the quenched variance. This paper complements our previous work where the classical central limit theorem is obtained for a large class of generalized $(T, T^{-1})$ transformations.

Abstract:Abstract We prove by methods of harmonic analysis a result on the existence of solutions for twisted cohomological equations on translation surfaces with loss of derivatives at most $3+$ in Sobolev spaces. As a consequence we prove that product translation flows on (three-dimensional) translation manifolds which are products of a (higher-genus) translation surface with a (flat) circle are stable in the sense of A. Katok. In turn, our result on product flows implies a stability result of time- $\tau $ maps of translation flows on translation surfaces.

Abstract:Zero forcing is a process that colors the vertices of a graph blue by starting with some vertices blue and applying a color change rule. Throttling minimizes the sum of the number of initial blue vertices and the time to color the graph. In this paper, we study throttling for skew zero forcing. We characterize the graphs of order $n$ with skew throttling numbers $1, 2, n-1$, and $n$. We find the exact skew throttling numbers of paths, cycles, and balanced spiders with short legs. In addition, we find a sharp lower bound on skew throttling numbers in terms of the diameter.

Abstract:Except for the Hermitian buildings $\mathcal{H}(4,q^2)$, up to a combination of duality, translation duality or Payne integration, every known finite building of type $\mathbb{B}_2$ satisfies a set of general synthetic properties, usually put together in the term "skew translation generalized quadrangle" (STGQ). In this series of papers, we classify finite skew translation generalized quadrangles. In the first installment of the series, as corollaries of the machinery we develop in the present paper, (a) we obtain the surprising result that any skew translation quadrangle of odd order $(s,s)$ is a symplectic quadrangle; (b) we determine all skew translation quadrangles with distinct elation groups (a problem posed by Payne in a less general setting); (c) we develop a structure theory for root-elations of skew translation quadrangles which will also be used in further parts, and which essentially tells us that a very general class of skew translation quadrangles admits the theoretical maximal number of root-elations for each member, and hence all members are "central" (the main property needed to control STGQs, as which will be shown throughout); (d) we solve the Main Parameter Conjecture for a class of STGQs containing the class of the previous item, and which conjecturally coincides with the class of all STGQs.

Abstract:We consider the probability measures on Young diagrams in the $n \times k$ rectangle obtained by piecewise-continuously differentiable specializations of Schur polynomials in the dual Cauchy identity. We use a free fermionic representation of the correlation kernel to study its asymptotic behavior and derive the uniform convergence to a limit shape of Young diagrams in the limit $n,k \to \infty$. More specifically, we show the bulk is the discrete sine kernel with boundary fluctuations generically given by the Tracy-Widom distribution with the Airy kernel. When our limit shape touches the boundary corner of the rectangle, the fluctuations with a second order correction are given by the discrete Hermite kernel, and we recover the discrete distribution of Gravner-Tracy-Widom (2001) [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0005133" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0005133">arXiv:math/0005133</a>] restricting to the leading order. Finally, we demonstrate our limit shapes can have sections with no or full density of particles, where the Pearcey kernel appears when such a section is infinitely small.

Abstract:We study a skew product transformation associated to an irrational rotation of the circle [0,1]/~. This skew product keeps track of the number of times an orbit of the rotation lands in the two complementary intervals of {0,1/2} in the circle. We show that under certain conditions on the continued fraction expansion of the irrational number defining the rotation, the skew product transformation has certain dense orbits. This is in spite of the presence of numerous non-dense orbits. We use this to construct laminations on infinite type surfaces with exotic properties. In particular, we show that for every infinite type surface with an isolated planar end, there is an infinite clique of 2-filling rays based at that end. These 2-filling rays are relevant to Bavard--Walker's loop graphs.

On dynamical skew braces and skew bracoids

Abstract:Dynamical skew braces are known to produce solutions to the quiver-theoretic Yang--Baxter equation. Under a technical hypothesis, we prove that these solutions are braided groupoids (and hence skew bracoids in the sense of Sheng, Tang and Zhu). Conversely, every connected braided groupoid can be parallelised, making it isomorphic to a dynamical skew brace. We study the combinatorics of these objects, depending on some strings of integer invariants.

Abstract:For a compact spin Riemannian manifold $(M,g^{TM})$ of dimension $n$ such that the associated scalar curvature $k^{TM}$ verifies that $k^{TM}\geqslant n(n-1)$, Llarull's rigidity theorem says that any area-decreasing smooth map $f$ from $M$ to the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ of nonzero degree is an isometry. We present in this paper a new proof for Llarull's rigidity theorem in odd dimensions via a spectral flow argument. This approach also works for a generalization of Llarrull's theorem when the sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ is replaced by an arbitrary smooth strictly convex closed hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. The results answer two questions by Gromov.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that translation structures for which the corresponding vertical translation flows is weakly mixing and disjoint with its inverse, form a $G_\delta$-dense set in every non-hyperelliptic connected component of the moduli space $\mathcal M$. This is in contrast to hyperelliptic case, where for every translation structure the associated vertical flow is isomorphic to its inverse. To prove the main result, we study limits of the off-diagonal 3-joinings of special representations of vertical translation flows. Moreover, we construct a locally defined continuous embedding of the moduli space into the space of measure-preserving flows to obtain the $G_\delta$-condition.

Abstract:We study 1-parameter families of holomorphic curves with Lagrangian boundary in Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We show that the expected codimension-1 phenomena can be organized to match the HOMFLYPT skein relations from quantum topology. It follows that counting holomorphic curves by the class of their boundaries in the skein module of the Lagrangian gives a deformation invariant result. This is a mathematically rigorous incarnation of Witten's assertion that boundaries of open topological strings create line defects in Chern-Simons theory. Using this theory, we rigorously establish the following prediction of Ooguri and Vafa: the coefficients of the HOMFLYPT polynomial of a link in the three-sphere count the holomorphic curves in the resolved conifold, with boundary on (a pushoff of) the link conormal.

Abstract:In this paper we completely classify infinite cyclic projective skew translation quadrangles through a new approach first partially introduced in Thas (A question of Frohardt on 2-groups, skew translation quadrangles of even order and cyclic STGQs. Preprint (2022), 11 pp), and in the present paper (unexpectedly) adapted to the infinite case. Very surprisingly, these objects do not exist and only occur in the finite case.

Abstract:In this paper we present a proof of the Verjovsky conjecture: Every codimension-one Anosov flow on a manifold of dimension greater than three is topologically equivalent to the suspension of a hyperbolic toral automorphism. In fact, the conjecture is derived from possible more general result that says that for every codimension-one volume-preserving Anosov flow on a manifold of dimension greater than three, a suitable time change guarantees that the stable and unstable sub-bundles are then jointly integrable.

Abstract:Motivated by work of Dolgopyat and Nándori, we establish a general method for upgrading limit theorems for Birkhoff sums and cocycles over dynamical systems to mixing limit theorems under mild ergodicity and hyperbolicity assumptions. Building on previous work of Al-Saqban and Forni, we apply this method to obtain mixing limit theorems for particular subbundles of the Kontsevich-Zorich cocycle. In forthcoming work of Arana-Herrera and Honaryar these results are applied to study the arithmetic/homological complexity of long simple closed geodesics on negatively curved surfaces.

Abstract:The number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape $\lambda/\mu$ can be computed as a sum over excited diagrams inside $\lambda$. Excited diagrams are in bijection with certain lozenge tilings, with flagged semistandard tableaux and also nonintersecting lattice paths inside $\lambda$. We give two new proofs of a multivariate generalization of this formula, which allow us to extend the setup beyond standard Young tableaux and the underlying Schur symmetric polynomials. The first proof uses multiple contour integrals. The second one interprets excited diagrams as configurations of a six-vertex model at a free fermion point, and derives the formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape from the Yang-Baxter equation.

Abstract:We study locally constant skew-product maps over full shifts of finite symbols with arbitrary compact metric spaces as fiber spaces. We introduce a new criterion to determine the density of leaves of the strong unstable (and strong stable) foliation, that is, for its minimality. When the fiber space is a circle, we show that both strong foliations are minimal for an open and dense set of robustly transitive skew-products. We provide examples where either one foliation is minimal or neither is minimal. Our approach involves investigating the dynamics of the associated iterated function system (IFS). We establish the asymptotic stability of the phase space of the IFS when it is a strict attractor of the system. We also show that any transitive IFS consisting of circle diffeomorphisms that preserve orientation can be approximated by a robust forward and backward minimal, expanding, and ergodic (with respect to Lebesgue) IFS. Lastly, we provide examples of smooth robustly transitive IFSs where either the forward or the backward minimal fails, or both.
