Abstract:In this article we study the vertices of simple modules for the symmetric groups in prime characteristic $p$. In particular, we complete the classification of the vertices of simple $S_n$-modules labelled by hook partitions.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime. In this paper, we compute complexities of some simple modules of symmetric groups labelled by two-part partitions. Most of the simple modules considered here are contained in the $p$-blocks with non-abelian defect groups.

Abstract:The submodule structure of general Specht modules in prime characteristic is a difficult open problem. Kleshchev and Sheth [Journal of Algebra, 221(2), pp.705-722] gave a combinatorial description of the submodule structure of Specht modules labelled by $2$-part partitions in prime characteristic. Using this result, as well as filtrations of Specht modules labelled by hook partitions via $2$-part Specht modules in characteristic $2$, one can study the submodule structure of hook Specht modules. In particular, we classify which of these are uniserial.

Abstract:The paper presented here focuses on the classification of trivial source Specht modules. We completely classify the trivial source Specht modules labelled by hook partitions. We also classify the trivial source Specht modules labelled by two-part partitions in the odd characteristic case. Moreover, in the even characteristic case, we prove a result for the classification of the trivial source Specht modules labelled by partitions with 2-weight 2, which justifies a conjecture of [16].

Abstract:By a result of Hemmer, every simple Specht module of a finite symmetric group over a field of odd characteristic is a signed Young module. While Specht modules are parametrized by partitions, indecomposable signed Young modules are parametrized by certain pairs of partitions. The main result of this article establishes the signed Young module labels of simple Specht modules. Along the way we prove a number of results concerning indecomposable signed Young modules that are of independent interest. In particular, we determine the label of the indecomposable signed Young module obtained by tensoring a given indecomposable signed Young module with the sign representation. As consequences, we obtain the Green vertices, Green correspondents, cohomological varieties, and complexities of all simple Specht modules and a class of simple modules of symmetric groups, and extend the results of Gill on periodic Young modules to periodic indecomposable signed Young modules.

On the rank varieties of some simple modules for symmetric groups

Abstract:In the previous work, Lim and the author determined the rank variety of the simple $\mathbb{F}\mathfrak{S}_{kp}$-module $D(p-1)=D^{(kp-p+1,1^{p-1})}$ with respect to some maximal elementary abelian $p$-subgroup $E_k$ and the complexity when $k\not\equiv 1\pmod p$ and $p$ is odd. Their method relied on the dimension of the module, which is dependent on $k$. In this paper, we extend this result to the case for any $k\geq 2$, and determine the rank variety of $D(p-1)$ and its complexity, providing a proof independent of $k$.

Abstract:Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. We calculate the vertices of all indecomposable kD8-modules for the dihedral group D8 of order 8. We also give a conjectural formula of the induced module of a string module from kT0 to kG where G is a dihedral group of order ⩾8 and where T0 is a dihedral subgroup of index 2 of G. Some cases where we verified this formula are given.

Abstract:The covering number of a non-linear character $\chi$ of a finite group $G$ is the least positive integer $k$ such that every irreducible character of $G$ occurs in $\chi^k$. We determine the covering numbers of irreducible characters of the symmetric group $S_n$ indexed by certain two-row partitions (and their conjugates), namely $(n-2,2)$ and $((n+1)/2, (n-1)/2)$ when $n$ is odd. We also determine the covering numbers of irreducible characters indexed by certain hook-partitions (and their conjugates), namely $(n-2,1^2)$, the almost self-conjugate hooks $(n/2+1, 1^{n/2-1})$ when $n$ is even, and the self-conjugate hooks $((n+1)/2, 1^{(n-1)/2})$ when $n$ is odd.

Abstract:Finding a combinatorial interpretation of the multiplicities of each irreducible representation of the symmetric group $S_n$ in the restriction of an irreducible polynomial representation of the general linear group $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$ remains an interesting open problem in algebraic combinatorics. In this paper we interpret the multiplicities of all irreducible representations of $S_n$ in the restriction of an irreducible polynomial representation of $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$ indexed by a hook partition.

Abstract:Recent works at the interface of algebraic combinatorics, algebraic geometry, number theory and topology have provided new integer-valued invariants on integer partitions. It is natural to consider the distribution of partitions when sorted by these invariants in congruence classes. We consider the prominent situations that arise from extensions of the Nekrasov–Okounkov hook product formula and from Betti numbers of various Hilbert schemes of n points on . For the Hilbert schemes, we prove that homology is equidistributed as . For t-hooks, we prove distributions that are often not equidistributed. The cases where stand out, as there are congruence classes where such counts are zero. To obtain these distributions, we obtain analytic results of independent interest. We determine the asymptotics, near roots of unity, of the ubiquitous infinite products

Abstract:Let $R_n$ denote the KLR algebra of type $A^{(1)}_{e-1}$. Using the presentation of Specht modules given by Kleschev-Mathas-Ram, Loubert completely determined $\hom_{R_n}(S^\mu,S^\lambda)$ where $\mu$ is an arbitrary partition, $\lambda$ is a hook and $e\neq2$. In this paper, we investigate the same problem when $e=2$. First we give a complete description of the action of the generators on the basis elements of $S^\lambda$. We use this result to identify a large family of partitions $\mu$ such that there exists at least one non-zero homomorphism from $S^\mu$ to $S^\lambda$, explicitly describe these maps and give their grading. Finally, we generalise James's result for the trivial module.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 566-589, March 2024. Modular decomposition focuses on repeatedly identifying a module [math] (a collection of vertices that shares exactly the same neighborhood outside of [math]) and collapsing it into a single vertex. This notion of exactitude of neighborhood is very strict, especially when dealing with real-world graphs. We study new ways to relax this exactitude condition. However, generalizing modular decomposition is far from obvious. Most of the previous proposals lose algebraic properties of modules and thus most of the nice algorithmic consequences. We introduce the notion of an [math]-module, a relaxation that maintains some of the algebraic structure. It leads to a new combinatorial decomposition with interesting properties. Among the main results in this work, we show that minimal [math]-modules can be computed in polynomial time, and we generalize series and parallel operation between graphs. This leads to [math]-cographs which have interesting properties. We study how to generalize Gallai's theorem corresponding to the case for [math], but unfortunately we give evidence that computing such a decomposition tree can be difficult.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the rank varieties for modules over a group algebra $\mathbb{F}E$ where $E$ is an elementary abelian $p$-group and $p$ is the characteristic of an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{F}$. In the first part, we give a sufficient condition for a Green vertex of an indecomposable module containing an elementary abelian $p$-group $E$ in terms of the rank variety of the module restricted to $E$. In the second part, given a homogeneous algebraic variety $V$ , we explore the problem on finding a small module with rank variety $V$ . In particular, we examine the simple module $D^{(kp-p+1,1^{p-1})}$ for the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_{kp}$.

Abstract:We compare lower defect groups associated with $p$-regular classes and vertices of simple modules for a block of a finite group algebra. We show that lower defect groups are contained in vertices of simple modules after suitable reordering. Moreover, for a block of principal type, we show that a $p$-regular lower defect group which contains a vertex of simple module is a defect group of the block.

Abstract:Based on previous results on the classification of finite-dimensional Nichols algebras over dihedral groups and the characterization of simple modules of Drinfeld doubles, we compute the irreducible characters of the Drinfeld doubles of bosonizations of finite-dimensional Nichols algebras over the dihedral groups $\mathbb{D}_{4t}$ with $t\geq 3$. To this end, we develop new techniques that can be applied to Nichols algebras over any Hopf algebra. Namely, we explain how to construct recursively irreducible representations when the Nichols algebra is generated by a decomposable module, and show that the highest-weight of minimum degree in a Verma module determines its socle. We also prove that tensoring a simple module by a rigid simple module gives a semisimple module.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and $H$ a normal subgroup of prime index $p$. Let $V$ be an irreducible ${\mathbb F}H$-module and $U$ a quotient of the induced ${\mathbb F}G$-module $V\kern-3pt\uparrow$. We describe the structure of $U$, which is semisimple when ${\rm char}({\mathbb F})\ne p$ and uniserial if ${\rm char}({\mathbb F})=p$. Furthermore, we describe the division rings arising as endomorphism algebras of the simple components of $U$. We use techniques from noncommutative ring theory to study ${\rm End}_{{\mathbb F}G}(V\kern-3pt\uparrow)$ and relate the right ideal structure of ${\rm End}_{{\mathbb F}G}(V\kern-3pt\uparrow)$ to the submodule structure of $V\kern-3pt\uparrow$.
