Abstract:We consider extremal contractions on smooth Fano fourfolds whose second Chern character is positive. We show that such contractions can neither be of fiber type nor contract a divisor to a point.

Abstract:We consider weak Fano manifolds with small contractions obtained by blowing up successively curves and subvarieties of codimension 2 in products of projective spaces. We give a classification result for a special case. In the process of proof, we describe explicitly the structure of nef cones and compute the self intersection numbers of anti-canonical divisors for such weak Fano manifolds.

Abstract:Let $(X, C)$ be a germ of a threefold $X$ with terminal singularities along a connected reduced complete curve $C$ with a contraction $f : (X, C) \to (Z, o)$ such that $C = f^{-1} (o)_{\mathrm{red}}$ and $-K_X$ is $f$-ample. Assume that each irreducible component of $C$ contains at most one point of index $>2$. We prove that a general member $D\in |{-}K_X|$ is a normal surface with Du Val singularities.

Fano varieties with large pseudoindex and non-free rational curves

Abstract:For $n\geq 4$, let $X$ be a complex smooth Fano $n$-fold whose minimal anticanonical degree of non-free rational curves on $X$ is at least $n-2$. We classify extremal contractions of such varieties. As an application, we obtain a classification of Fano fourfolds with pseudoindex and Picard number greater than one. Combining this result with previous results, we complete the classification of smooth Fano $n$-folds with pseudoindex at least $n-2$ and Picard number greater than one. This can be seen as a generalization of various previous results. We also discuss the relations between pseudoindex and other invariants of Fano varieties.

Abstract:We identify a set of initial rational contractions of fiber type on $\overline{M}_{0,6}$. Our proof uses a new algorithm we develop for verifying descriptions of the cone of effective divisors on varieties without elementary rational contractions of fiber type. On Mori dream spaces, our algorithm identifies faces of the cone of nef curves associated to initial rational contractions of fiber type.

Abstract:Given a Q-Cartier divisor $S \subset X$ admitting a fibration $S \rightarrow B$ onto a curve we give sufficient conditions for the existence of a bimeromorphic contraction contracting S onto B. As a corollary we recover a contraction result for compact Kähler threefolds.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate singularities on fibrations and related topics. We prove a conjecture of Shokurov and McKernan on singularities on Fano type fibrations and a conjecture of the author on singularities on log Calabi-Yau fibrations. From these we derive a variant of a conjecture of McKernan and Prokhorov on rationally connected varieties with nef anti-canonical divisor. We discuss other applications including existence of bounded klt complements and gonality of fibres of del Pezzo fibrations. We prove a general result on controlling multiplicities of fibres of certain fibrations (not necessarily of Fano type) which is the key ingredient of the proofs of the above results.

Abstract:We consider a toric degeneration of Calabi--Yau complete intersections of Batyrev--Borisov in the Gross--Siebert program. The author showed in his previous work that there exists an integral affine contraction map called a tropical contraction, from the tropical variety obtained as its tropicalization to the dual intersection complex of the toric degeneration. In this article, we prove that the dual intersection complex is isomorphic to the essential skeleton of the Berkovich analytification as piecewise integral affine manifolds, and the composition of the tropicalization map and the tropical contraction is an affinoid torus fibration with a discriminant of codimension $2$, which induces the same integral affine structure as the one coming from the toric degeneration. This is a generalization of the earlier work by Pille-Schneider for a specific degeneration of Calabi--Yau hypersurfaces in projective spaces.

Abstract:We study Fano manifolds $X$ admitting an unsplit dominating family of rational curves and we prove that the Generalized Mukai Conjecture holds if $X$ has pseudoindex $i_X = (\dim X)/3$ or dimension $\dim X=6$. Abstract:We show that there exists a toric Fano manifold of dimension $10$ that does not admit an extremal Kähler metric in the first Chern class, answering a question of Mabuchi. By taking a product with a suitable toric Fano manifold, one can also produce a toric Fano manifold of dimension $n$ admitting no extremal Kähler metric in the first Chern class for each $n \geq 11$.

Abstract:We study moduli spaces of stable objects in the Kuznetsov components of Fano threefolds. We prove a general non-emptiness criterion for moduli spaces, which applies to the cases of prime Fano threefolds of index $1$, degree $10 \leq d \leq 18$, and index $2$, degree $d \leq 4$. In the second part, we focus on cubic threefolds. We show the irreducibility of the moduli spaces, and that the general fibers of the Abel--Jacobi maps from the moduli spaces to the intermediate Jacobian are Fano varieties. When the dimension is sufficiently large, we further show that the general fibers of the Abel--Jacobi maps are stably birational equivalent to each other. As an application of our methods, we prove Conjecture A.1 in [FGLZ24] concerning the existence of Lagrangian subvarieties in moduli spaces of stable objects in the Kuznetsov components of very general cubic fourfolds.

Abstract:Using representations of vertex operator algebras, we describe the line bundles on a wide range of contractions of $\overline{\rm{M}}_{0,n}$, the moduli space of stable $n$-pointed rational curves, by proving a stronger version of the contraction theorem for these morphisms. These include the celebrated constructions of Kapranov, Keel, and Knudsen. Our main result suggests that while many so-called F-curves are not $K_X$-negative, they exhibit behavior similar to $K_X$-negative curves. This reveals for instance, a distinguished property of Knudsen's construction $f_{\text{Knu}}:\overline{\rm{M}}_{0,n}\to \overline{\rm{M}}_{0,n-1}\times_{\overline{\rm{M}}_{0,n-2}}\overline{\rm{M}}_{0,n-1}$, allowing for the classification of all possible factorizations of $f_{\text{Knu}}$, as well as further applications, and generalizations.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove various results on boundedness and singularities of Fano fibrations and of Fano type fibrations. A Fano fibration is a projective morphism X→ Z of algebraic varieties with connected fibres such that X is Fano over Z, that is, X has "good" singularities and -K_X is ample over Z. A Fano type fibration is similarly defined where X is assumed to be close to being Fano over Z. This class includes many central ingredients of birational geometry such as Fano varieties, Mori fibre spaces, flipping and divisorial contractions, crepant models, germs of singularities, etc. We develop the theory in the more general framework of log Calabi-Yau fibrations. Dans cet article, nous prouvons divers résultats sur les limites et les singularités de fibrations de Fano et les fibrations de type Fano. Une fibration de Fano est un morphisme projectif X→ Z de variétés algébriques à fibres connexes tel que X est Fano sur Z, c'est-à-dire que X a de "bonnes" singularités et -K_X est ample sur Z. Une fibration de type Fano est définie de façon similaire quand X est supposé être proche d'être Fano sur Z. Cette classe comprend de nombreux ingrédients centraux de géométrie birationnelle tels que les variétés de fano, les espaces de fibres Mori, le flip et les contractions divisorielles, les modèles répétiteurs, les germes de singularités, etc. Nous développons la théorie dans le cadre plus général des log-fibrations de Calabi-Yau.
