Abstract:We consider the percolation problem in the high-temperature Ising model on the two-dimensional square lattice at or near critical external fields. The incipient infinite cluster (IIC) measure in the sense of Kesten is constructed. As a consequence, we can obtain some geometric properties of IIC. The result holds also for the triangular lattice.

Abstract:This note is motivated by results in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0608132" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0608132">arXiv:math/0608132</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0806.2425" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0806.2425">arXiv:0806.2425</a> about global relations between the invasion percolation cluster (IPC) and the incipient infinite cluster (IIC) on regular trees and on two dimensional lattices, respectively. Namely, that the laws of the two objects are mutually singular, and, in the case of regular trees, that the IIC stochastically dominates the IPC. We prove that on two dimensional lattices, the IIC does not stochastically dominate the IPC. This is the first example showing that the relation between the IIC and IPC is significantly different on trees and in two dimensions.

On the number of infinite clusters in the constrained-degree percolation model

Abstract:We consider constrained-degree percolation model on the hypercubic lattice \linebreak $\mathbb{L}^d=(\mathbb{Z}^d,\mathbb{E}^d)$. In this model, there exits a sequence $(U_e)_{e\in\mathbb{E}^d}$ of i.i.d. random variables with distribution $Unif([0,1])$ and a positive integer $k$, which is called a constraint. Each edge $e$ attempts to open at time $U_e$, and the attempt is successful if the number of neighboring edges open at each endvertex of $e$ is at most $k-1$. In \cite{hartarsky2022weakly}, the authors demonstrated that this model undergoes a phase transition when $d\geq3$ and for most nontrivial values of $k$. In the present work, we prove that, for any fixed constraint, the number of infinite clusters at any given time $t\in[0,1)$ is either 0 or 1, almost surely.

Abstract:We study invasion percolation in two dimensions, focusing on properties of the outlets of the invasion and their relation to critical percolation and to incipient infinite clusters (IIC's). First we compute the exact decay rate of the distribution of both the weight of the kth outlet and the volume of the kth pond. Next we prove bounds for all moments of the distribution of the number of outlets in an annulus. This result leads to almost sure bounds for the number of outlets in a box B(2^n) and for the decay rate of the weight of the kth outlet to p_c. We then prove existence of multiple-armed IIC measures for any number of arms and for any color sequence which is alternating or monochromatic. We use these measures to study the invaded region near outlets and near edges in the invasion backbone far from the origin.

Infinite cycles in the interchange process in five dimensions

Abstract:In the interchange process on a graph $G=(V,E)$, distinguished particles are placed on the vertices of $G$ with independent Poisson clocks on the edges. When the clock of an edge rings, the two particles on the two sides of the edge interchange. In this way, a random permutation $\pi_\beta:V\to V$ is formed for any time $\beta >0$. One of the main objects of study is the cycle structure of the random permutation and the emergence of long cycles. We prove the existence of infinite cycles in the interchange process on $\mathbb Z ^d$ for all dimensions $d\ge 5$ and all large $\beta $, establishing a conjecture of Bálint Tóth from 1993 in these dimensions. In our proof, we study a self-interacting random walk called the cyclic time random walk. Using a multiscale induction we prove that it is diffusive and can be coupled with Brownian motion. One of the key ideas in the proof is establishing a local escape property which shows that the walk will quickly escape when it is entangled in its history in complicated ways.

The incipient infinite cluster of the FK-Ising model in dimensions $d\geq 3$ and the susceptibility of the high-dimensional Ising model

Abstract:We consider the critical FK-Ising measure $\phi_{\beta_c}$ on $\mathbb Z^d$ with $d\geq 3$. We construct the measure $\phi^\infty:=\lim_{|x|\rightarrow \infty}\phi_{\beta_c}[\:\cdot\: |\: 0\leftrightarrow x]$ and prove it satisfies $\phi^\infty[0\leftrightarrow \infty]=1$. This corresponds to the natural candidate for the incipient infinite cluster measure of the FK-Ising model. Our proof uses a result of Lupu and Werner (Electron. Commun. Probab., 2016) that relates the FK-Ising model to the random current representation of the Ising model, together with a mixing property of random currents recently established by Aizenman and Duminil-Copin (Ann. Math., 2021). We then study the susceptibility $\chi(\beta)$ of the nearest-neighbour Ising model on $\mathbb Z^d$. When $d>4$, we improve a previous result of Aizenman (Comm. Math. Phys., 1982) to obtain the existence of $A>0$ such that, for $\beta<\beta_c$, \begin{equation*} \chi(\beta)= \frac{A}{1-\beta/\beta_c}(1+o(1)), \end{equation*} where $o(1)$ tends to $0$ as $\beta$ tends to $\beta_c$. Additionally, we relate the constant $A$ to the incipient infinite cluster of the double random current.

A Notion of Dimension based on Probability on Groups

Abstract:We introduce notions of dimension of an infinite group, or more generally, a metric space, defined using percolation. Roughly speaking, the percolation dimension $pdim(G)$ of a group $G$ is the fastest rate of decay of a symmetric probability measure $\mu$ on $G$, such that Bernoulli percolation on $G$ with connection probabilities proportional to $\mu$ behaves like a Poisson branching process with parameter 1 in a sense made precise below. We show that $pdim(G)$ has several natural properties: it is monotone decreasing with respect to subgroups and quotients, and coincides with the growth rate exponent for several classes of groups.

Abstract:We study the dimension theory of limit sets of iterated function systems consisting of a countably infinite number of contractions. Our primary focus is on the intermediate dimensions: a family of dimensions depending on a parameter $\theta \in [0,1]$ which interpolate between the Hausdorff and box dimensions. Our main results are in the case when all the contractions are conformal. Under a natural separation condition we prove that the intermediate dimensions of the limit set are the maximum of the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set and the intermediate dimensions of the set of fixed points of the contractions. This builds on work of Mauldin and Urba\'nski concerning the Hausdorff and upper box dimension. We give several (often counter-intuitive) applications of our work to dimensions of projections, fractional Brownian images, and general H\"older images. These applications apply to well-studied examples such as sets of numbers which have real or complex continued fraction expansions with restricted entries. We also obtain several results without assuming conformality or any separation conditions. We prove general upper bounds for the Hausdorff, box and intermediate dimensions of infinitely generated attractors in terms of a topological pressure function. We also show that the limit set of a 'generic' infinite iterated function system has box and intermediate dimensions equal to the ambient spatial dimension, where 'generic' can mean either 'full measure' or 'comeagre.'

Abstract:The site and bond percolation problems are conventionally studied on (hyper)cubic lattices, which afford straightforward numerical treatments. The recent implementation of efficient simulation algorithms for high-dimensional systems now also facilitates the study of $D_n$ root lattices in $n$ dimension as well as $E_8$-related dense packing lattices. Here, we consider the percolation problem on $D_n$ for $n=3$ to $13$ and on $E_8$ relatives for $n=6$ to 9. Precise estimates for both site and bond percolation thresholds obtained from invasion percolation simulations are compared with dimensional series expansion on $D_n$ lattices based on lattice animal enumeration. As expected, the bond percolation threshold rapidly approaches the Bethe lattice limit as $n$ increases for these high-connectivity lattices. Corrections, however, exhibit clear yet unexplained trends. Interestingly, the finite-size scaling exponent for invasion percolation is found to be lattice and percolation-type specific.
Dimensions of harmonic measures in percolation clusters on hyperbolic groups

Abstract:For the simple random walks in percolation clusters on hyperbolic groups, we show that the associated harmonic measures are exact dimensional and their Hausdorff dimensions are equal to the entropy over the speed. Our method is inspired by cluster relations introduced by Gaboriau and applies to a large class of random environments on the groups.

Abstract:Despite great progress in the study of critical percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for $d$ large, properties of critical clusters in high-dimensional fractional spaces and boxes remain poorly understood, unlike the situation in two dimensions. Closely related models such as critical branching random walk give natural conjectures for the value of the relevant high-dimensional critical exponents; see in particular the conjecture by Kozma-Nachmias that the probability that $0$ and $(n, n, n, \ldots)$ are connected within $[-n,n]^d$ scales as $n^{-2-2d}$. In this paper, we study the properties of critical clusters in high-dimensional half-spaces and boxes. In half-spaces, we show that the probability of an open connection ("arm") from $0$ to the boundary of a sidelength $n$ box scales as $n^{-3}$. We also find the scaling of the half-space two-point function (the probability of an open connection between two vertices) and the tail of the cluster size distribution. In boxes, we obtain the scaling of the two-point function between vertices which are any macroscopic distance away from the boundary.

Incipient infinite clusters and self-similarity for metric graph Gaussian free fields and loop soups

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the existence and equivalence of four types of incipient infinite clusters (IICs) for the critical Gaussian free field (GFF) level-set and the critical loop soup on the metric graph $\widetilde{\mathbb{Z}}^d$ for all $d\ge 3$ except the critical dimension $d=6$. These IICs are defined as four limiting conditional probabilities, involving different conditionings and various ways of taking limits: (1) conditioned on $\{0 \leftrightarrow{} \partial B(N)\}$ at criticality (where $\partial B(N)$ is the boundary of the box $B(N)$ centered at the origin $0$ with side length $2N$), and letting $N\to \infty$; (2) conditioned on $\{0\leftrightarrow{} \infty\}$ at super-criticality, and letting the parameter tend to the critical threshold; (3) conditioned on $\{0 \leftrightarrow{} x\}$ at criticality (where $x\in \mathbb{Z}^d$ is a lattice point), and letting $x\to \infty$; (4) conditioned on the event that the capacity of the critical cluster containing $0$ exceeds $T$, and letting $T\to \infty$. Our proof employs a robust framework of Basu and Sapozhinikov (2017) for constructing IICs as in (1) and (2) for Bernoulli percolation in low dimensions (i.e., $3\le d\le 5$), whereas a key hypothesis on the quasi-multiplicativity is proved in our companion paper. We further show that conditioned on $\{0 \leftrightarrow{} \partial B(N)\}$, the volume within $B(M)$ of the critical cluster containing $0$ is typically of order $M^{(\frac{d}{2}+1)\vee 4}$, regardless of how large $N$ is (provided with $N\gg M$). This phenomenon indicates that the critical cluster of GFF or loop soup exhibits self-similarity, which supports Werner's conjecture (2016) that such critical cluster has a scaling limit. Moreover, the exponent of the order $M^{(\frac{d}{2}+1)\vee 4}$ matches the conjectured fractal dimension of the scaling limit from Werner (2016).

Abstract:Besides its original spin representation, the Ising model is known to have the Fortuin-Kasteleyn (FK) bond and loop representations, of which the former was recently shown to exhibit two upper critical dimensions $(d_c=4,d_p=6)$. Using a lifted worm algorithm, we determine the critical coupling as $K_c = 0.077\,708\,91(4)$ for $d=7$, which significantly improves over the previous results, and then study critical geometric properties of the loop-Ising clusters on tori for spatial dimensions $d=5$ to 7. We show that, as the spin representation, the loop Ising model has only one upper critical dimension at $d_c=4$. However, sophisticated finite-size scaling (FSS) behaviors, like two length scales, two configuration sectors and two scaling windows, still exist as the interplay effect of the Gaussian fixed point and complete-graph asymptotics. Moreover, using the Loop-Cluster algorithm, we provide an intuitive understanding of the emergence of the percolation-like upper critical dimension $d_p=6$ in the FK-Ising model. As a consequence, a unified physical picture is established for the FSS behaviors in all the three representations of the Ising model above $d_c=4$.

Isoperimetric Inequalities and Supercritical Percolation on High-Dimensional Graphs

Abstract:It is known that many different types of finite random subgraph models undergo quantitatively similar phase transitions around their percolation thresholds, and the proofs of these results rely on isoperimetric properties of the underlying host graph. Recently, the authors showed that such a phase transition occurs in a large class of regular high-dimensional product graphs, generalising a classic result for the hypercube. In this paper we give new isoperimetric inequalities for such regular high-dimensional product graphs, which generalise the well-known isoperimetric inequality of Harper for the hypercube, and are asymptotically sharp for a wide range of set sizes. We then use these isoperimetric properties to investigate the structure of the giant component in supercritical percolation on these product graphs, that is, when , where d is the degree of the product graph and is a small enough constant. We show that typically has edge-expansion . Furthermore, we show that likely contains a linear-sized subgraph with vertex-expansion . These results are best possible up to the logarithmic factor in d . Using these likely expansion properties, we determine, up to small polylogarithmic factors in d , the likely diameter of as well as the typical mixing time of a lazy random walk on . Furthermore, we show the likely existence of a cycle of length . These results not only generalise, but also improve substantially upon the known bounds in the case of the hypercube, where in particular the likely diameter and typical mixing time of were previously only known to be polynomial in d .

Effect of Dimensionality on the Continuum Percolation of Overlapping Hyperspheres and Hypercubes: II. Simulation Results and Analyses

Abstract:In the first paper of this series [S. Torquato, J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 136}, 054106 (2012)], analytical results concerning the continuum percolation of overlapping hyperparticles in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$ were obtained, including lower bounds on the percolation threshold. In the present investigation, we provide additional analytical results for certain cluster statistics, such as the concentration of $k$-mers and related quantities, and obtain an upper bound on the percolation threshold $\eta_c$. We utilize the tightest lower bound obtained in the first paper to formulate an efficient simulation method, called the {\it rescaled-particle} algorithm, to estimate continuum percolation properties across many space dimensions with heretofore unattained accuracy. This simulation procedure is applied to compute the threshold $\eta_c$ and associated mean number of overlaps per particle ${\cal N}_c$ for both overlapping hyperspheres and oriented hypercubes for $ 3 \le d \le 11$. These simulations results are compared to corresponding upper and lower bounds on these percolation properties. We find that the bounds converge to one another as the space dimension increases, but the lower bound provides an excellent estimate of $\eta_c$ and ${\cal N}_c$, even for relatively low dimensions. We confirm a prediction of the first paper in this series that low-dimensional percolation properties encode high-dimensional information. We also show that the concentration of monomers dominate over concentration values for higher-order clusters (dimers, trimers, etc.) as the space dimension becomes large. Finally, we provide accurate analytical estimates of the pair connectedness function and blocking function at their contact values for any $d$ as a function of density.

Finite-size Scaling of O($n$) Systems at the Upper Critical Dimensionality

Abstract:Logarithmic finite-size scaling of the O($n$) universality class at the upper critical dimensionality ($d_c=4$) has a fundamental role in statistical and condensed-matter physics and important applications in various experimental systems. Here, we address this long-standing problem in the context of the $n$-vector model ($n=1, 2, 3$) on periodic four-dimensional hypercubic lattices. We establish an explicit scaling form for the free energy density, which simultaneously consists of a scaling term for the Gaussian fixed point and another term with multiplicative logarithmic corrections. In particular, we conjecture that the critical two-point correlation $g(r,L)$, with $L$ the linear size, exhibits a two-length behavior: following the behavior $r^{2-d_c}$ governed by Gaussian fixed point at shorter distance and entering a plateau at larger distance whose height decays as $L^{-d_c/2}({\rm ln}L)^{\hat{p}}$ with $\hat{p}=1/2$ a logarithmic correction exponent. Using extensive Monte Carlo simulations, we provide complementary evidence for the predictions through the finite-size scaling of observables including the two-point correlation, the magnetic fluctuations at zero and non-zero Fourier modes, and the Binder cumulant. Our work sheds light on the formulation of logarithmic finite-size scaling and has practical applications in experimental systems.

On the dimension theory of random walks and group actions by circle diffeomorphisms

Abstract:We establish new results on the dimensional properties of measures and invariant sets associated to random walks and group actions by circle diffeomorphisms. This leads to several dynamical applications. Among the applications, we show, strengthening of a recent result of Deroin-Kleptsyn-Navas [24], that the minimal set of a finitely generated group of real-analytic circle diffeomorphisms, if exceptional, must have Hausdorff dimension less than one. Moreover, if the minimal set contains a fixed point of multiplicity k + 1 of an diffeomorphism of the group, then its Hausdorff dimension must be greater than k/(k + 1). These results generalize classical results about Fuchsian group actions on the circle to non-linear settings. This work is built on three novel components, each of which holds its own interest: a structure theorem for smooth random walks on the circle, several dimensional properties of smooth random walks on the circle and a dynamical generalization of the critical exponent of Fuchsian groups.

The two upper critical dimensions of the Ising and Potts models

Abstract:We derive the exact actions of the $Q$-state Potts model valid on any graph, first for the spin degrees of freedom, and second for the Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters. In both cases the field is a traceless $Q$-component scalar field $\Phi^\alpha$. For the Ising model ($Q=2$), the field theory for the spins has upper critical dimension $d_{\rm c}^{\rm spin}=4$, whereas for the clusters it has $d_{\rm c}^{\rm cluster}=6$. As a consequence, the probability for three points to be in the same cluster is not given by mean-field theory for $d$ within $4<d<6$. We estimate the associated universal structure constant as $C=\sqrt{6-d}+ {\cal O}(6-d)^{3/2}$. This shows that some observables in the Ising model have an upper critical dimension of 4, while others have an upper critical dimension of $6$. Combining perturbative results from the $\epsilon=6-d$ expansion with a non-perturbative treatment close to dimension $d=4$ allows us to locate the shape of the critical domain of the Potts model in the whole $(Q,d)$ plane.

Abstract:Let , where is a connected Lie group and is a lattice in . Let be an open subset of , and let be a one-parameter subsemigroup of . Consider the set of points in whose -orbit misses ; it has measure zero if the flow is ergodic. It has been conjectured that, assuming ergodicity, this set has Hausdorff dimension strictly smaller than the dimension of . This conjecture has been proved when is compact or when is a simple Lie group of real rank , or, most recently, for certain flows on the space of lattices. In this paper we prove this conjecture for arbitrary -diagonalizable flows on irreducible quotients of semisimple Lie groups. The proof uses exponential mixing of the flow together with the method of integral inequalities for height functions on . We also derive an application to jointly Dirichlet-Improvable systems of linear forms.
