Abstract:(Bi)harmonic field has wide applications in geometry processing. Traditionally, to locally control the influence region of a (bi)harmonic field, users usually need to determine the range of its support, regions with non-zero scalar values, by prescribing appropriate boundary conditions. However, this way is non-intuitive and inconvenient. We proposed localized quasi-(bi)harmonic field, which is achieved through a ℓ1-norm regularized convex optimization. It can conveniently control the local support of the scalar field while still keeping some nice properties of the (bi)harmonic field. We applied the localized quasi-(bi)harmonic field in applications such as shape deformation and shape merging, and the experiment results show its benefits.

Abstract:We extend Polyak's theorem on the convexity of joint numerical range from three to any number of quadratic forms on condition that they can be generated by three quadratic forms with a positive definite linear combination. Our new result covers the fundamental Dines's theorem. As applications, we further extend Yuan's lemma and S-lemma, respectively. Our extended Yuan's lemma is used to build a more generalized assumption than that of Haeser (J. Optim. Theory Appl. 174(3): 641-649, 2017), under which the standard second-order necessary optimality condition holds at local minimizer. The extended S-lemma reveals strong duality of homogeneous quadratic optimization problem with two bilateral quadratic constraints.

Abstract:We consider the optimization problem $(P_{A})$ $\inf_{x\in X}\{f(x)+g(Ax)\}$ where $f$ and $g$ are proper convex functions defined on locally convex Hausdorff topological vector spaces $X$ and $Y$, respectively, and $A$ is a linear operator from $X$ to $Y$. By using the properties of the epigraph of the conjugated functions, some sufficient and necessary conditions for the strong Fenchel duality and the strong converse Fenchel duality of $(P_{A})$ are provided. Sufficient and necessary conditions for the stable Fenchel duality and for the total Fenchel duality are also derived.

Abstract:We consider the DC (difference of two convex functions) optimization problem (P) inf (x is an element of X){(f(1)(x) - f(2)(x) + (g(1)(Ax) - g(2)(Ax))}, where f(1), f(2), g(1), and g(2) are proper convex functions defined on locally convex Hausdorff topological vector spaces X and Y, and A is a linear continuous operator from X to Y. Adopting different tactics, two types of the Fenchel dual problems of (P) are given. By using the properties of the epigraph of the conjugate functions, some sufficient and necessary conditions for the weak duality of (P) are provided. Sufficient and/or necessary conditions for the strong Fenchel duality, the stable Fenchel duality, and the stable total duality are derived.

Abstract:In this paper we show how the superquadratic functions can be used as a tool for researching other types of convex functions like $\phi $-convexity, strong-convexity and uniform convexity. We show how to use inequalities satisfied by superquadratic functions and how to adapt the technique used to get them in order to obtain new results satisfied by uniformly convex functions and to $\phi $-convex functions. Also, we show examples that emphasize relations between superquadracity and some other types of convex functions

Abstract:We study nonconvex homogeneous quadratically constrained quadratic optimization with one or two constraints, denoted by (QQ1) and (QQ2), respectively. (QQ2) contains (QQ1), trust region subproblem (TRS) and ellipsoid regularized total least squares problem as special cases. It is known that there is a necessary and sufficient optimality condition for the global minimizer of (QQ2). In this paper, we first show that any local minimizer of (QQ1) is globally optimal. Unlike its special case (TRS) with at most one local non-global minimizer, (QQ2) may have infinitely many local non-global minimizers. At any local non-global minimizer of (QQ2), both linearly independent constraint qualification and strict complementary condition hold, and the Hessian of the Lagrangian has exactly one negative eigenvalue. As a main contribution, we prove that the standard second-order sufficient optimality condition for any strict local non-global minimizer of (QQ2) remains necessary. Applications and the impossibility of further extension are discussed.

Abstract:Many practical optimization problems lack strong convexity. Fortunately, recent studies have revealed that first-order algorithms also enjoy linear convergences under various weaker regularity conditions. While the relationship among different conditions for convex and smooth functions is well-understood, it is not the case for the nonsmooth setting. In this paper, we go beyond convexity and smoothness, and clarify the connections among common regularity conditions in the class of weakly convex functions, including $\textit{strong convexity}$, $\textit{restricted secant inequality}$, $\textit{subdifferential error bound}$, $\textit{Polyak-Łojasiewicz inequality}$, and $\textit{quadratic growth}$. In addition, using these regularity conditions, we present a simple and modular proof for the linear convergence of the proximal point method (PPM) for convex and weakly convex optimization problems. The linear convergence also holds when the subproblems of PPM are solved inexactly with a proper control of inexactness.

Abstract:This paper gives some results related to the research problem about infinite-dimensional affine variational inequalities raised by N.D. Yen and X. Yang [Affine variational inequalities on normed spaces, J. Optim. Theory Appl., 178 (2018), 36--55]. Namely, we obtain local error bounds for affine variational inequalities on Hilbert spaces. To do so, we revisit two fundamental properties of polyhedral mappings. Then, we prove a locally upper Lipschitzian property of the inverse of the residual mapping of the infinite-dimensional affine variational inequality under consideration. Finally, we derive the desired local error bounds from that locally upper Lipschitzian property.

Abstract:In this paper, we endow the space of continuous translation invariant valuations on convex sets generated by mixed volumes coupled with a suitable Radon measure on tuples of convex bodies with two appropriate norms. This enables us to construct a continuous extension of the convolution operator on smooth valuations to non-smooth valuations, which are in the completion of the spaces of valuations with respect to these norms. The novelty of our approach lies in the fact that our proof does not rely on the general theory of wave fronts, but on geometric inequalities deduced from optimal transport methods. We apply this result to prove a variant of Minkowski’s existence theorem, and generalize a theorem of Favre–Wulcan and Lin in complex dynamics over toric varieties by studying the linear actions on the Banach spaces of valuations and by studying their corresponding eigenspaces.

In this paper, we continue the work related to the class of quasi-convex mappings of type which have a -parametric representation on , where the mappings are k -fold symmetric, We give the improved Fekete-Szegö inequalities for the class and establish the sharp bounds of all terms of homogeneous polynomial expansions for some subclasses of . Our main results are closely related to the Bieberbach conjecture in higher dimensions.

Abstract:The classical four vertex theorem describes a fundamental property of simple closed planar curves. It has been extended to space curves, namely a smooth, simple closed curve in R-3 has at least four points with vanishing torsion if it lies on a convex surface. More recently, Ghomi [6] extended this property to curves lying on locally convex surfaces. In this paper we provide an alternative approach to the result via the theory of Monge-Ampere equations.

Abstract:Generalized polyhedral convex optimization problems in locally convex Hausdorff topological vector spaces are studied systematically in this paper. We establish solution existence theorems, necessary and sufficient optimality conditions, weak and strong duality theorems. In particular, we show that the dual problem has the same structure as the primal problem, and the strong duality relation holds under three different sets of conditions.

Abstract:We study stability of the three geometric properties: uniform convexity, nearly uniform convexity, and property (β) under the Yoshikawa–Sparr interpolation method when the resulting interpolation space is considered with various equivalent norms. We give an example which shows that interpolation spaces obtained by the discrete and continuous versions of the method need not be isometric and present a method of transferring geometric properties from the discrete case to the continuous one.

Abstract:Inspired by locale theory, pointfree convex geometry was first proposed and studied by Yoshihiro Maruyama. In this paper, we shall continue to his work and investigate the related topics on pointfree convex spaces. Concretely, the following results are obtained: (1) A Hofmann–Lawson-like duality for pointfree convex spaces is established. (2) The -injective objects in the category of -convex spaces are proved precisely to be sober convex spaces, where is the class of strict maps of convex spaces; (3) A convex space X is sober iff there never exists a nontrivial identical embedding such that its dualization is an isomorphism, and a convex space X is iff there never exists a nontrivial identical embedding such that its dualization is an isomorphism. (4) A dual adjunction between the category of continuous lattices with continuous D -homomorphisms and the category of -convex spaces with CP -maps is constructed, which can further induce a dual equivalence between and a subcategory of ; (5) The relationship between the quotients of a continuous lattice L and the convex subspaces of is investigated and the collection of all algebraic quotients of L is proved to be an algebraic join-sub-complete lattice of of all quotients of L , where denote the set of non-bottom compact elements of L . Furthermore, it is shown that is isomorphic to the collection of all sober convex subspaces of ; (6) Several necessary and sufficient conditions for all convex subspaces of to be sober are presented.

Abstract:We consider the problem of approximating nonconvex quadratic optimization with ellipsoid constraints (ECQP). We show some SDP-based approximation bounds for special cases of (ECQP) can be improved by trivially applying the extened Pataki's procedure. The main result of this paper is to give a new analysis on approximating (ECQP) by the SDP relaxation, which greatly improves Tseng's result [SIAM Journal Optimization, 14, 268-283, 2003]. As an application, we strictly improve the approximation ratio for the assignment-polytope constrained quadratic program.
On the growth of nonconvex functionals at strict local minimizers

Abstract:In this paper, we present new equivalent conditions for the growth of proper lower semicontinuous functionals at strict local minimizers. The main conditions are a variant of the so-called tilt stability property of local minimizers and an analog of the classic Polyak-Łojasiewicz condition, where the gradient is replaced by linear perturbations. We derive the following tilting principle: stability of minimizers under linear perturbations can infer their stability under nonlinear ones. We show how growth conditions can be used to give convergence rates for the proximal point algorithm. Finally, we give an application to elliptic tracking problems, establishing a novel equivalence between second-order conditions and the sensitivity of solutions with respect to uncertainty in data.

Constructing Tight Quadratic Relaxations for Global Optimization: I. Outer-Approximating Twice-Differentiable Convex Functions

Abstract:When computing bounds, spatial branch-and-bound algorithms often linearly outer approximate convex relaxations for non-convex expressions in order to capitalize on the efficiency and robustness of linear programming solvers. Considering that linear outer approximations sacrifice accuracy when approximating highly nonlinear functions and recognizing the recent advancements in the efficiency and robustness of available methods to solve optimization problems with quadratic objectives and constraints, we contemplate here the construction of quadratic outer approximations of twice-differentiable convex functions for use in deterministic global optimization. To this end, we present a novel cutting-plane algorithm that determines the tightest scaling parameter, $\alpha$, in the second-order Taylor series approximation quadratic underestimator proposed by Su et al. We use a representative set of convex functions extracted from optimization benchmark libraries to showcase--qualitatively and quantitatively--the tightness of the constructed quadratic underestimators and to demonstrate the overall computational efficiency of our algorithm. Furthermore, we extend our construction procedure to generate even tighter quadratic underestimators by allowing overestimation in infeasible polyhedral regions of optimization problems, as informed by the latter's linear constraints.
