Abstract:We simulate the formation of $sp$ carbon chains (carbynes) by thermal decomposition of $sp^2$ carbon heated by a hot discharge plasma, by means of tight-binding molecular dynamics. We obtain and analyze the total quantity of carbynes and their length distribution as a function of temperature and density.

Abstract:One-dimensional monatomic chains are promising candidates for technical applications in the field of nanoelectronics due to their unique mechanical, electrical and optical properties. In particular, we investigate the mechanical properties including Young's modulus, ultimate strength and ultimate strain, which are necessities for the stability of the materials by the Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics in this work. The comparative studies for the alternating carbon-nitrogen (C3N2) chain and carbon chains (carbyne) of different lengths show that the carbon-nitrogen (C-N) chain is obviously stronger and stiffer than carbynes. Thus the C-N chain, which has been found in decomposition products of the nitromethane explosive simulations, could be a superior nano-mechanical material than the carbyne chain. Furthermore, it is found that the bond order of weakest bond in monatomic chains is positively correlated with Young's modulus and ultimate strength of materials.

Abstract:Resourceful beyond-graphene two-dimensional (2D) carbon crystals have been proposed/synthesized; however, the fundamental knowledge of their melting thermodynamics remains lacking. Here, the structural and thermodynamic properties of nine contemporary 2D carbon crystals upon heating are investigated using first-principle-based ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations. Those 2D carbon crystals show distinct evolution of energetic and Lindemann index that distinguish their thermal stabilities. There are two or three critical temperatures at which structural transformation occurs for non-hexagon-contained 2D carbon allotropes. Analysis of polygons reveals that non-hexagon-contained 2D carbon crystals show thermally induced hex-graphene transitions via mechanisms such as bond rotations, dissociation, and reformation of bonds. The study provides new insights into the thermodynamics and pyrolysis chemistry of 2D carbon materials, as well as structural transitions, which is of great importance in the synthesis and application of 2D materials in high-temperature processing and environment.
Tunable Mechanical and Thermal Properties of One-Dimensional Carbyne Chain: Phase Transition and Microscopic Dynamics

Abstract:Recently, carbyne chain, the one-dimensional sp-hybridized carbon allotrope in the form of either alpha-carbyne (polyyne), with alternating single and triple bonds, or beta-carbyne (cumulene), with repeating double bonds, has attracted more and more attention. However, the mechanical and thermal properties of individual phases, phase-transition dynamics, and defect formation remain largely unknown. Our molecular dynamics simulations show that the critical temperature for phase transition from cumulene to polyyne is 499 K, and the phase transition is ultrafast and completed within 150 fs. To achieve perfect polyyne, however, refined temperature control is needed so as to avoid defective bonds. The bending stiffness and Young's modulus of cumulene are significantly higher than those of polyyne, while both are comparable to those of the hardest natural materials. The large difference in the stress-strain behavior between cumulene and polyyne provides a novel route for storing mechanical energy. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity of cumulene is found to be 2 times higher than that of polyyne, and defective bonds can dramatically decrease the thermal conductivity of polyyne to only 13% of that of pristine polyyne. The significant changes in mechanical and thermal properties between the two phases of carbyne chain present a great opportunity for its use as strain sensors, mechanical connectors, and mechanical/thermal energy storage devices.
Disclosing Early Excited State Relaxation Events in Prototypical Linear Carbon Chains

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) linear nanostructures comprising sp-hybridized carbon atoms, as derivatives of the prototypical allotrope known as carbyne, are predicted to possess outstanding mechanical, thermal, and electronic properties. Despite recent advances in the synthesis, their chemical and physical properties are still poorly understood. Here, we investigate the photophysics of a prototypical polyyne (i.e., 1D chain with alternating single and triple carbon bonds), as the simplest model of finite carbon wire and as a prototype of sp-carbon-based chains. We perform transient absorption experiments with high temporal resolution (<30 fs) on monodispersed hydrogen-capped hexayne H$-$(C$\equiv$C)$_6-$H synthesized by laser ablation in liquid. With the support of detailed computational studies based on ground state density functional theory (DFT) and excited state time-dependent (TD)-DFT calculations, we provide a comprehensive description of the excited state relaxation processes at early times following photoexcitation. We show that the internal conversion from a bright high-energy singlet excited state to a low-lying singlet dark state is ultrafast and takes place with a 200-fs time constant, followed by thermalization on the picosecond timescale and decay of the low-energy singlet state with hundreds of picoseconds time constant. We also show that the timescale of these processes does not depend on the end groups capping the sp-carbon chain. The understanding of the primary photo-induced events in polyynes is of key importance both for fundamental knowledge and for potential optoelectronic and light-harvesting applications of low dimensional nanostructured carbon-based materials.

Abstract:Carbyne is an ideal one-dimensional conductor and the thinnest interconnection in an ultimate nano-device and it requires an understanding of the mechanical properties that affect device performance and reliability. Here, we report the mechanical properties of finite-size carbyne, obtained by a molecular dynamics simulation study based on the adaptive intermolecular reactive empirical bond order potential. To avoid confusion in assigning the effective cross-sectional area of carbyne, the value of the effective cross-sectional area of carbyne (4.148Å2) was deduced via experiment and adopted in our study. Ends-constraints effects on the ultimate stress (maximum force) of the carbyne chains are investigated, revealing that the molecular dynamics simulation results agree very well with the experimental results. The ultimate strength, Young's Modulus and maximum strain of carbyne are rather sensitive to the temperature and all decrease with the temperature. Opposite tendencies of the length dependence of the overall ultimate strength and maximum strain of carbyne at room temperature and very low temperature have been found, and analyses show that this originates in the ends effect of carbyne.

Abstract:Two transitions in the bonding are found in tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) films as a function of deposition temperature. The total sp3 fraction shows a sharp decrease at a transition temperature of order 250 °C. In contrast, visible Raman finds that the sp2 sites show a gradual ordering into the graphitic clusters through the sharp bonding transition. The optical gap and resistivity show a similar, gradual transition. This indicates that the sp2 cluster size determines the optical gap, even when the sp2 content does not change. The Raman I(D)/I(G) peak ratio is found to vary inversely with the square of the gap.

Abstract:Laser-Arc evaporation of a graphite target has been used to deposit carbon films that exhibit high hardness (45 GPa) and elastic recovery (85%). High Resolution Electron Microscopy (HREM) and Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) were subsequently used to study the microstructure and bonding of the resultant layers. The structure of the films from HREM is seen to consist of a dense array of parallel curved graphene sheet segments packed in various orientations. EELS reveals that the films are comprised of mainly sp2 bonded carbon. The results suggest that a new form of carbon thin film with fullerene-like structure can be realised. In order to explain how a predominantly sp2 bonded material can exhibit such a high hardness, a simple model is proposed to correlate the excellent mechanical properties with the observed structure.

Abstract:The biphenylene network with periodically arranged four-, six-, and eightmembered rings has been successfully synthesized in very recent experiments. This novel two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope has potentials in applications of lithium storage and carbon-based circuitry. Understanding the thermal transport properties of biphenylene network is of critical importance for the performance and reliability of its practical applications. To this end, the thermal transport in biphenylene network is comprehensively investigated in this paper with the aid of molecular dynamics simulations together with first-principles calculations. For the sake of comparison, the thermal conductivities of other 2D sp2-hybridized carbon allotropes including graphene and pentaheptite are also investigated using the same method. It is found that the thermal conductivities of biphenylene network and pentaheptite are, respectively, only about one-thirteenth and one-eighth of graphene. Through the analysis of phonon property, mechanical property and electron density distribution, it is demonstrated that the great reduction in the thermal conductivity of biphenylene network and pentaheptite arises from the decline in their structural symmetry, which leads to the decrease of phonon group velocity and the reduction of phonon mean free path.

Abstract:Carbon nanomaterials receive much attention due to enhanced mechanical and electrical properties that arise from nanoconfinement. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (3-dimensional) and graphene sheets (2-dimensional) have seen applications as sensors, high-strength fiber reinforcements, and adhesives. Carbyne, a 1-dimensional purely carbon structure consisting of alternating single and triple bonds, is projected to be the strongest material in the known world, with specific strength several times that of CNTs and graphene. Despite its desirable properties, carbyne’s extreme instability under standard conditions has inhibited its commercial development. Recent advancements in carbyne synthesis using CNTs as molecular scaffolds show that carbyne may finally be able to progress from theory to reality. Here, an approach for the preparation and stabilization of long-chain carbyne without the use of CNTs is proposed. Using multilevel pulse-voltage injection (MLPI) to create uniform, subnanometer diameter pores in silicon nitride as thermally stable nanoreactors, initial theoretical calculations suggest that carbyne may be synthesized under high temperature and vacuum. Carbyne chains may then be extracted from the pores and subsequently stabilized by immersion into a solution of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA). The long-chain carbyne is then free to be used for a multiplicity of applications, including low-threshold sensors and the realization of high-strength carbyne fibers.

Thermal Stability of C4+4nH8 Polycubanes

Abstract:The temperature dependences of the lifetimes of polycubanes C4+4nH8 with n = 2 - 5 up to their decomposition have been directly calculated using the molecular dynamics method. It has been shown that the activation energy of decomposition of these metastable clusters, in which the C-C bonds form an angle of 90^0 that is not characteristic of carbon systems, rapidly decreases with an increase in n due to the lowering of the energy barrier that prevents the decomposition of the clusters. This has cast some doubt on the recently made suggestion that there exist nanotubes (n >> 1) with a square cross section. Nonetheless, the stability of bicubane (n = 2) and tricubane (n = 3) has proved to be sufficient for their existence at the liquid-nitrogen temperature.

The morphological transformation of carbon materials from nanospheres to graphene nanoflakes by thermal plasmas

Abstract:Carbon materials are synthesized by the thermal decomposition of acetylene using a magnetically rotating arc under atmospheric pressure. The effects of hydrogen addition, gas injection position, acetylene concentration, and reaction temperature on the morphology of pyrolysis products are evaluated. Carbon spherical particles and graphene nanoflakes are also obtained. Results indicate that a large amount of hydrogen, a low carbon flow, and high temperatures can promote the morphological transformation of carbon materials from nanospheres to graphene nanoflakes. Combined with a gas–phase kinetic model and a simulation of computational fluid dynamics, the reaction zone with a critical temperature of 2500 K can be divided basically into nucleation and surface growth, which correspond to the temperature–rise zone and high–temperature maintenance zone, respectively. Essential factors affecting graphene formation may include the formation of sheet–like nuclei and continuous planar growth at the side active sites of the structure. A low collision frequency of precursors and the high temperatures favor the formation of sheets–like nuclei. Planar surface growth requires hydrogen to terminate dangling bonds at edges and a high temperature to induce growth without a curvature.

Abstract:We report the generation of fullerenes and nanotubes using an arc discharge on graphite in a high-pressure nozzle. The vapour from the arc is quenched via collisions with helium gas, forming carbon clusters within a localized highpressure region. The carbon molecules are entrained in the gas jet as it expands into the vacuum and deposited onto a silicon substrate in a low-pressure (6 mT) environment. Mass spectroscopy measurements of the plasma reveal the presence of C molecules in the expanding plume. Microstructural examination of films deposited using this method revealed clustered regions of larger fullerenes and nanotubes surrounded by an amorphous matrix. Films containing fullerenes and nanotubes were found to be significantly harder and more elastic than amorphous carbon films deposited under identical parameters but without conditions for fullerene and/or nanotube formation.

Abstract:An original catalytic method has been proposed to synthesize carbon nanotubes (CNTs)–ZrB2–ZrO2 heterostructures using ZrB2 polymeric precursor. The pyrolysized gases from the ZrB2 polymeric precursor are identified to be the carbon sources for CNTs growth. A parametric study is conducted to control the CNTs growth by optimizing parameters such as synthesis temperature and catalyst content. Observations show that the in situ grown CNTs are homogeneously dispersed in the powders, and the structure and the amount of CNTs are significantly dependent on the synthesis parameters. There are two kinds of grown CNTs existed in the produced hybrid heterostructures: (i) the kinking structured CNTs that are disordered and incomplete graphitization; (ii) the improved and graphitized CNTs. The ZrB2 polymeric precursor during thermal pyrolysis provides capable of supplying substantial carbon source for CNTs nucleation and growth by homogeneous vapor–liquid–solid reactions.
Universal Vibrational Anharmonicity in Carbyne-like Materials

Abstract:Carbyne, an infinite linear chain of carbon atoms, is the truly one-dimensional allotrope of carbon. While ideal carbyne and its fundamental properties have remained elusive, carbyne-like materials like carbyne chains confined inside carbon nanotubes are available for study. Here, we probe the longitudinal optical phonon (C-mode) of confined carbyne chains by Raman spectroscopy up to the third overtone. We observe a strong vibrational anharmonicity that increases with decreasing C-mode frequency, reaching up to 8% for the third overtone. Moreover, we find that the relation between vibrational anharmonicity and C-mode frequency is universal to carbyne-like materials, including ideal carbyne. This establishes experimentally that carbyne and related materials have pronounced anharmonic potential landscapes which must be included in the theoretical description of their structure and properties.

Abstract:The extreme instability and strong chemical activity of carbyne, the infinite sp1 hybridized carbon chain, are responsible for its low possibility to survive in ambient conditions. Therefore, much less has been possible to explore about carbyne as compared to other novel carbon allotropes such as fullerenes, nanotubes and graphene. Although end-capping groups can be used to stabilize carbon chains, length limitation is still a barrier for its actual production, and even more for applications. Here, we report a novel route for bulk production of record long acetylenic linear carbon chains protected by thin double-walled carbon nanotubes. A corresponding extremely high Raman band is the first proof of a truly bulk yield formation of very long arrangements, which is unambiguously confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and near-field Raman spectroscopy. Our production establishes a way to exceptionally long stable carbon chains including more than 2300 carbon atoms, and an elegant forerunner towards the final goal of a bulk production of essentially infinite carbyne.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Carbyne, an elusive sp-hybridized linear carbon allotrope, has fascinated chemists and physicists for decades. Due to its high chemical reactivity and extreme instability, carbyne was much less explored in contrast to the sp2-hybridized carbon allotropes such as graphene. Herein, we report the on-surface synthesis of polyynic carbon chains by demetallization of organometallic polyynes on the Au(111) surface; the longest one observed consists of ∼60 alkyne units (120 carbon atoms). The polyynic structure of carbon chains with alternating triple and single bonds was unambiguously revealed by bond-resolved atomic force microscopy. Moreover, an atomically precise polyyne, C14, was successfully produced via tip-induced dehalogenation and ring-opening of the decachloroanthracene molecule (C14Cl10) on a bilayer NaCl/Au(111) surface at 4.7 K, and a band gap of 5.8 eV was measured by scanning tunnelling spectroscopy, in a good agreement with the theoretical HOMO–LUMO gap (5.48 eV).

Thermal Disorder in Finite-Length Carbon Nanowire

Abstract:Enhancement in chemisorption is one of the active research areas in carbon materials. To remedy the thermally degraded chemisorption occurring at high temperatures, we report a comprehensive study of kink structures in free-standing monoatomic carbon nanowires upon heating. Our Monte Carlo simulation considers multi-monoatomic carbon chains laterally interacting by van der Waals forces. Our study reveals that carbon nanowires maintain their linearity regardless of chain length at low temperatures, but this is not the case at high temperatures. Disordered kink structure is observed in short carbon chains, especially above the Peierls transition temperature. A severe kink structure may increase the possibility of attaching negatively charged atoms, thereby contributing to the development of next-generation materials for chemisorption at high temperatures. We have also provided an important indication that any physical property of the finite-length carbon chain predicted by ab initio calculation should reconsider the atomic rearrangement due to thermal instability at high temperatures.

Abstract:Graphdiyne, atomically-thin 2D carbon nanostructure based on sp-sp2 hybridization, is an appealing system potentially showing outstanding mechanical and optoelectronic properties. Surface-catalyzed coupling of halogenated sp-carbon-based molecular precursors represents a promising bottom-up strategy to fabricate extended 2D carbon systems with engineered structure on metallic substrates. Here, we investigate the atomic-scale structure and electronic and vibrational properties of an extended graphdiyne-like sp-sp2 carbon nanonetwork grown on Au(111) by means of on-surface synthesis. The formation of such 2D nanonetwork at its different stages as a function of the annealing temperature after the deposition is monitored by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), Raman spectroscopy and combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. High-resolution STM imaging and the high sensitivity of Raman spectroscopy to the bond nature provide a unique strategy to unravel the atomic-scale properties of sp-sp2 carbon nanostructures. We show that hybridization between the 2D carbon nanonetwork and the underlying substrate states strongly affects its electronic and vibrational properties, modifying substantially the density of states and the Raman spectrum compared to the free standing system. This opens the way to the modulation of the electronic properties with significant prospects in future applications as active nanomaterials for catalysis, photoconversion and carbon-based nanoelectronics.

Abstract:Delicate synthesis of one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanostructures from two-dimensional (2D) graphene Moiré layers holds tremendous interest among materials science, due to its unique physiochemical properties exhibited during formation of hybrid configurations with sp-sp2 hybridization. However, controlled synthesis of such hybrid sp-sp2 configurations remains highly challenging. Henceforth, we employed a simple hydrothermal technique using agro-industrial waste as the carbon source to synthesize 1D carbyne nanocrystals from nanoconstricted zones of 2D graphene Moiré layers. Utilizing suite of characterization techniques, we delineate the mechanism of carbyne nanocrystal formation, wherein the origin of carbyne nanochains has been deciphered from graphene intermediates due to the presence of hydrothermally cut nanoconstriction regime engendered over well-oriented graphene Moiré patterns. Autogenous hydrothermal pressurization of agro-industrial waste under controlled conditions led to generation of epoxy rich graphene intermediates which concomitantly gives rise to carbyne nanocrystal formation in oriented Moiré layers with nanogaps. The unique growth of carbyne nanocrystals over few layers of holey graphene exhibits excellent paramagnetic properties, predominant localization of electrons and interfacial polarization effects. Further, we extended the application of as-synthesized carbyne product (Cp) towards real-time electrochemical based toxic metal (As3+) sensing in groundwater samples (from riverbanks), depicting superior sensitivity (0.22 mA/μM) even at extremely lower concentration (0.0001 μM) corroborating with the impedance spectroscopy analysis.
