Abstract:We solve a variant of the classical Buffon Needle problem. More specifically, we inspect the probability that a randomly oriented needle of length $l$ originating in a bounded convex set $X\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ lies entirely within $X$. Using techniques from convex geometry, we prove an isoperimetric type inequality, showing that among sets $X$ with equal perimeter, the disk maximizes this probability.

Abstract:Given a function f > 0 on the unit sphere n +1 , the Minkowski problem in the sphere concerns the existence of convex hypersurfaces M subset of(n +1) such that the Gauss curvature of M at z is equal to f (v( z )), where v(z) is the unit outer normal of M at z . We use the min-max principle and the Gauss curvature flow to prove that there are at least two solutions to the problem. By using the rotating plane method in the sphere, we also show the existence of a rotationally symmetric and monotone function f such that there are exactly two solutions.
Buffon-Laplace Needle Problem as a geometric probabilistic approach to filtration process

Abstract:Buffon-Laplace Needle Problem considers a needle of a length $l$ randomly dropped on a large plane distributed with vertically parallel lines with distances $a$ and $b$ ($a \geqslant b$), respectively. As a classical problem in stochastic probability, it serves as a mathematical basis of various physical literature, such as the efficiency of a filter and the emergence of clogging in filtration process. Yet its potential application is limited by previous focus on its original form of the `short' needle case of $l < b$ and its analytical difficulty in a general sense. Here, rather than a `short' two-dimensional needle, we analytically solve the problems with two- and three-dimensional needles and spherocylinders of arbitrary length and radius dropped on a grid with any rectangular shape. We further confirm our analytical theory with Monte Carlo simulation. Our framework here helps to provide a geometric analytical perspective to filtration process, and also extend the analytical power of the needle problem into unexplored parameter regions for physical problems involving stochastic processes.

Abstract:In this paper, we use Aleksandrov's reflection principle to prove symmetry of solutions to F(∇Sn2u+uI)=f(u,u2+|∇Snu|2), where u is the support function of a convex body, and F is a function of principal radii. As a corollary, alongside [Ivaki, arXiv:2307.06252], we provide an alternative proof of the uniqueness of solution to the isotropic Gaussian-Minkowski problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we resolve the planar dual Minkowski problem, proposed by Huang et al. (2016) [31] for all positive indices without any symmetry assumption. More precisely, given any q>0, and function f on S1, bounded by two positive constants, we show that there exists a convex body Ω in the plane, containing the origin in its interior, whose dual curvature measure C˜q(Ω,⋅) has density f. In particular, if f is smooth, then ∂Ω is also smooth.

Abstract:A version of the classical Buffon problem in the plane naturally extends to the setting of any Riemannian surface with constant Gaussian curvature. The Buffon probability determines a Buffon deficit. The relationship between Gaussian curvature and the Buffon deficit is similar to the relationship that the Bertrand-Diguet-Puiseux Theorem establishes between Gaussian curvature and both circumference and area deficits.

Abstract:A fixed point theorem is used to study a singular second order three-point boundary value problem. The problem is more general. Combining the method of constructing Green functions with operators defined piecewise, the existence result of positive solutions to a singular second order three-point boundary value problem is established. The nonlinearity can be allowed to change sign.

Abstract:What is the probability that a needle dropped at random on a set of points scattered on a line segment does not fall on any of them? We compute the exact scaling expression of this hole probability when the spacings between the points are independent identically distributed random variables with a power-law distribution of index less than unity, implying that the average spacing diverges. The theoretical framework for such a setting is renewal theory, to which the present study brings a new contribution. The question posed here is also related to the study of some correlation functions of simple models of statistical physics.

Abstract:Author reduces the Minkowski problem to the problem of construction the G-deformations preserving the product of principal curvatures for every point of surface in Riemannian space. G-deformation transfers every normal vector of surface in parallel along the path of the translation for each point of surface. The continuous G-deformations preserving the product of principal curvatures of surface with boundary are considered in this article. The equations of deformations which are obtained in this paper reduce to the nonlinear boundary-value problem. The method of construction continuous G-deformations preserving the product of principal curvatures of surface with boundary and its qualitative analysis are presented in this article

Abstract:If you throw a needle or stick at random onto a floor ruled with parallel lines, such as the cracks between floorboards or tiles, from the proportion of times that the stick lands crossing a crack you can estimate $\pi$; can we get $e$ as well? Yes, we can. All of these aspects have been discussed before, but I haven't seen them discussed in this way: that one can estimate both $\pi$ and $e$ with the same Buffon's needle experiment.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the mechanical problem of piercing a soft solid body with a needle. This phenomenon is controlled by the critical condition of needle insertion. Needle insertion involves physical and geometrical nonlinearities and a complex failure mechanism. To overcome the complexity of the problem, we describe needle insertion as a sharp transition between two needle-specimen configurations, namely 'indentation' and 'penetration'. The sharp configurational change emerges from a mechanical instability and follows the principle of energy minimum. We describe the needle-specimen system in terms of the force applied to the back of the needle and the axial displacement of the needle tip toward the material. At small needle displacements, the energetically favoured configuration is indentation. Conversely, when the needle displaces beyond a critical threshold, it penetrates the specimen by rupturing its surface. This creates a new energetically favoured configuration: penetration. Our analysis considers a cylindrical needle with a spherical tip, neglects friction and adhesion between the needle and the material, and assumes quasi-static conditions. Despite the mathematical simplicity of our analysis, our theoretical predictions on the needle insertion force have been validated against experiments with surprising accuracy. Our method provides an effective predictive tool, which can be extended to account for different indenter geometry and material behaviour.

Abstract:Let $\Cant_n$ be the $n$-th generation in the construction of the middle-half Cantor set. The Cartesian square $\K_n$ of $\Cant_n$ consists of $4^n$ squares of side-length $4^{-n}$. The chance that a long needle thrown at random in the unit square will meet $\K_n$ is essentially the average length of the projections of $\K_n$, also known as the Favard length of $\K_n$. A result due to Bateman and Volberg \cite{BV} shows that a lower estimate for this Favard length is $c \frac{\log n}{n}$. We may bend the needle at each stage, giving us what we will call a noodle, and ask whether the uniform lower estimate $c \frac{\log n}{n}$ still holds for these so-called Buffon noodle probabilities. If so, we call the sequence of noodles undercooked. We will define a few classes of noodles and prove that they are undercooked. In particular, we are interested in the case when the noodles are circular arcs of radius $r_n$. We will show that if $r_n \geq 4^{\frac{n}{5}}$, then the circular arcs are undercooked noodles.
Needle decompositions and isoperimetric inequalities in Finsler geometry

Abstract:Klartag recently gave a beautiful alternative proof of the isoperimetric inequalities of Levy-Gromov, Bakry-Ledoux, Bayle and E. Milman on weighted Riemannian manifolds. Klartag's approach is based on a generalization of the localization method (so-called needle decompositions) in convex geometry, inspired also by optimal transport theory. Cavalletti and Mondino subsequently generalized the localization method, in a different way more directly along optimal transport theory, to essentially non-branching metric measure spaces satisfying the curvature-dimension condition. This class in particular includes reversible (absolutely homogeneous) Finsler manifolds. In this paper, we construct needle decompositions of non-reversible (only positively homogeneous) Finsler manifolds, and show an isoperimetric inequality under bounded reversibility constants. A discussion on the curvature-dimension condition CD$(K,N)$ for $N = 0$ is also included, it would be of independent interest.

Abstract:Let $(M,g)$ be a Riemannian manifold with boundary. We show that knowledge of the length of each geodesic, and where pairwise intersections occur along the corresponding geodesics allows for recovery of the geometry of $(M,g)$ (assuming $(M,g)$ admits a Riemannian collar of a uniform radius). We call this knowledge the 'stitching data'. We then pose a boundary measurement type problem called the 'delayed collision data problem' and apply our first result about the stitching data to recover the geometry from the collision data (with some reasonable geometric restrictions on the manifold).

Abstract:N-sided hole filling plays an important role in vertex blending. To deal with the case that the corner is surrounded by rational surfaces (i.e. NURBS surfaces), an algorithm to fill n-sided holes with epsilon-G(1) continuous NURBS patches that interpolate the given boundary curves and approximate the given cross-boundary derivatives is presented based on Piegl's method. The NURBS surfaces joining along inner or boundary curves have normal vectors that do not deviate more than the user-specified angular tolerance epsilon. The boundaries as well as cross-boundary derivatives can all be NURBS curves. No restrictions are imposed on the number of boundary curves, and the cross-boundary derivatives can be specified independently. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Smooth surfaces from an arbitrary topological control grid have been widely studied, which are mostly generalized from splines with uniform knot intervals. These methods fail to work well on extraordinary points (EPs) whose edges have varying knot intervals. This paper presents a patching solution for arbitrary topological 2-manifold control grid with non-uniform knots that defines one bi-cubic Bézier patch per control grid face except those faces with EPs. Experimental results demonstrate that the new solution can improve the surface quality for non-uniform parameterization. Applications in surface reconstruction, arbitrary sharp features on the complex surface and tool path planning for the new surface representation are also provided in the paper.

On the Injectivity Radius of the Stiefel Manifold: Numerical investigations and an explicit construction of a cut point at short distance

Abstract:Arguably, geodesics are the most important geometric objects on a differentiable manifold. They describe candidates for shortest paths and are guaranteed to be unique shortest paths when the starting velocity stays within the so-called injectivity radius of the manifold. In this work, we investigate the injectivity radius of the Stiefel manifold under the canonical metric. The Stiefel manifold $St(n,p)$ is the set of rectangular matrices of dimension $n$-by-$p$ with orthogonal columns, sometimes also called the space of orthogonal $p$-frames in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Using a standard curvature argument, Rentmeesters has shown in 2013 that the injectivity radius of the Stiefel manifold is bounded by $\sqrt{\frac{4}{5}}\pi$. It is an open question, whether this bound is sharp. With the definition of the injectivity radius via cut points of geodesics, we gain access to the information of the injectivity radius by investigating geodesics. More precisely, we consider the behavior of special variations of geodesics, called Jacobi fields. By doing so, we are able to present an explicit example of a cut point. In addition, since the theoretical analysis of geodesics for cut points and especially conjugate points as a type of cut points is difficult, we investigate the question of the sharpness of the bound by means of numerical experiments.

Bounds on the Index of an Umbilic Point

Abstract:Umbilics are points of a surface embedded in three space where normal curvatures are independent of direction. The (in)famous Carath\'{e}odory Conjecture states that a compact simply connected embedded surface has at least two umbilic points. A counterexample to this conjecture would be a surface whose principal foliation has index two at a single umbilic. All (purported) proofs of the Carath\'{e}odory Conjecture are based on analyses of the index of an umbilic, concluding that it is at most one. This investigation gives a much simpler geometric argument that the index of an umbilic on an analytic surface cannot be an integer larger than one, providing new insight into the Carath\'{e}odory Conjecture. The results also establish lower bounds for the index of an umbilic based on its degeneracy.
