Abstract:Let $f: M \to M$ denote a diffeomorphism of a smooth manifold $M$. Let $p$ in $M$ be its hyperbolic fixed point with stable and unstable manifolds $W_S$ and $W_U$, respectively. Assume that $W_S$ is a curve. Suppose that $W_U$ and $W_S$ have a degenerate homoclinic crossing at a point $B\ne p$, i.e., they cross at $B$ tangentially with a finite order of contact. It is shown that, subject to $C^1$-linearizability and certain conditions on the invariant manifolds, a transverse homoclinic crossing will arise arbitrarily close to $B$. This proves the existence of a horseshoe structure arbitrarily close to $B$, and extends a similar planar result of Homburg and Weiss.

Abstract:An orientation-preserving non-contractible separatrix loop of a hyperbolic saddle of a vector field on a two-dimensional surface may be accumulated by a separatrix of the same saddle. We study the unfolding of such loops in generic one-parameter families of vector fields as a semi-local bifurcation. As a byproduct, we construct a countable family of pairwise non-equivalent germs of bifurcation diagrams that appear in locally generic one-parameter families.

Abstract:We consider a one-parameter family $(f_\lambda)_{\lambda \, \geqslant \, 0}$ of symmetric vector fields on the three-dimensional sphere $\mathbb{S}^3\subset\mathbb{R}^4$ whose flows exhibit a heteroclinic network between two saddle-foci inside a global attracting set. More precisely, when $\lambda = 0$, there is an attracting heteroclinic cycle between the two equilibria which is made of two $1$-dimensional connections together with a $2$-dimensional sphere which is both the stable manifold of one saddle-focus and the unstable manifold of the other. After slightly increasing the parameter while keeping the $1$-dimensional connections unaltered, the two-dimensional invariant manifolds of the equilibria become transversal, and thereby create homoclinic and heteroclinic tangles. It is known that these newborn structures are the source of a countable union of topological horseshoes, which prompt the coexistence of infinitely many sinks and saddle-type invariant sets for many values of $\lambda$. We show that, for every small enough positive parameter $\lambda$, the stable and unstable manifolds of the equilibria and those infinitely many horseshoes are contained in the global attracting set of $f_\lambda$. Moreover, we prove that the horseshoes belong to the heteroclinic class of the equilibria. In addition, we verify that the set of chain-accessible points from either of the saddle-foci is chain-stable and contains the closure of the invariant manifolds of the two equilibria.

Abstract:A class of planar diffeomorphims is formulated, with infinitely many coexisting Smale horseshoes, where the Lebesgue measure of the parameters with such strange dynamics is infinite. On each horseshoe, there exists a uniformly hyperbolic invariant set, on which the map is topologically conjugate to the two-sided full-shift on two symbols. Moreover, the topological entropy is infinite in certain parameter regions.

Abstract:A topological dynamical system is said to have a semi-horseshoe if there exists a subsystem of its iterates which is topologically semi-conjugate to the full shift. It is shown that several classes of dynamical systems, including partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms and automorphisms of compact metric abelian groups with positive topological entropy, have semi-horseshoes.

Abstract:In this article, a family of diffeomorphisms with growing horseshoes contained in global attracting regions is presented, where the dimension of the unstable direction can be any fixed integer and a growing horseshoe means that the number of the folds of the horseshoe is increasing as a parameter is varied. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the horseshoe-like attractors are observable for certain parameters.

Abstract:In the setting of saddle point reduction, we prove that the critical groups of the original functional and the reduced functional are isomorphic. As application, we obtain two nontrivial solutions for elliptic gradient systems which may be resonant both at the origin and at infinity. The difficulty that the variational functional does not satisfy the Palais-Smale condition is overcame by taking advantage of saddle point reduction. Our abstract results on critical groups are crucial.

Abstract:We prove that there is a residual subset $\mathcal{I}$ of ${\rm Diff}^1({\it M})$ such that any homoclinic class of a diffeomorphism $f\in \mathcal{I}$ having saddles of indices $\alpha$ and $\beta$ contains a dense subset of saddles of index $\tau$ for every $\tau\in [\alpha,\beta]\cap \mathbb{N}$. We also derive some consequences from this result about the Lyapunov exponents of periodic points and the sort of bifurcations inside homoclinic classes of $C^1$-generic diffeomorphisms.

Abstract:We seize some new dynamics of a Lorenz-like system: <(x)over dot> = a(y-x), y = dy-xz, z = -bz + fx(2) + gxy, such as for the Hopf bifurcation, the behavior of non-isolated equilibria, the existence of singularly degenerate heteroclinic cycles and homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits. In particular, our new discovery is that the system has also two heteroclinic orbits for bg = 2a(f + g) and a > d > 0 other than known bg > 2a(f + g) and a > d > 0, whose proof is completely different from known case. All the theoretical results obtained are also verified by numerical simulations.

Abstract:We examine smooth four-dimensional vector fields reversible under some smooth involution that has a smooth two-dimensional submanifold of fixed points. Our main interest here is in the orbit structure of such a system near two types of heteroclinic connections involving saddle-foci and heteroclinic orbits connecting them. In both cases we found families of symmetric periodic orbits, multi-round heteroclinic connections and countable families of homoclinic orbits of saddle-foci. All this suggests that the orbit structure near such connections is very complicated. A non-variational version of the stationary Swift – Hohenberg equation is considered, as an example, where such structure has been found numerically.

Abstract:Homoclinic bifurcation is a difficult and important topic of bifurcation theory. As we know, a general theory for a homoclinic loop passing through a hyperbolic saddle was established by [Roussarie, 1986]. Then the method of stability-changing to find limit cycles near a double homoclinic loop passing through a hyperbolic saddle was given in [Han & Chen, 2000], and further developed by [Han et al., 2003; Han & Zhu, 2007]. For a homoclinic loop passing through a nilpotent saddle there are essentially two different cases, which we distinguish by cuspidal type and smooth type, respectively. For the cuspidal type a general theory was recently established in [Zang et al., 2008]. In this paper, we consider limit cycle bifurcation near a double homoclinic loop passing through a nilpotent saddle by studying the analytical property of the first order Melnikov functions for general near-Hamiltonian systems and obtain the conditions for the perturbed system to have 8, 10 or 12 limit cycles in a neighborhood of the loop with seven different distributions. In particular, for the homoclinic loop of smooth type, a general theory is obtained as a consequence. We finally consider some polynomial systems and find a lower bound of the maximal number of limit cycles as an application of our main results.

Abstract:The bifurcation theory for homoclinic networks with singular and nonsingular equilibriums is a key to understand the global dynamics of nonlinear dynamical systems, which will help one determine the dynamical behaviors of physical and engineering nonlinear systems. In this paper, the appearing and switching bifurcations for homoclinic networks through equilibriums in planar polynomial dynamical systems are studied. The appearing and switching bifurcations are discussed for the homoclinic networks of nonsingular and singular sources, sinks, saddles with singular saddle-sources, saddle-sinks, and double-saddles in self-univariate polynomial systems. The first integral manifolds for nonsingular and singular equilibrium networks are determined. The illustrations of singular equilibriums to networks of nonsingular sources, sinks and saddles are given. The appearing and switching bifurcations are studied for homoclinic networks of singular and nonsingular saddles and centers with singular parabola-saddles and double-inflection saddles in crossing-univariate polynomial systems, and the first integral manifolds of such homoclinic networks are determined through polynomial functions. The illustrations of singular equilibriums to networks of nonsingular saddles and centers are given. This paper may help one understand higher-order bifurcation theory in nonlinear dynamical systems, which is completely different from the classic bifurcation theories.

Abstract:Exponential small splitting of separatrices in the singular perturbation theory leads generally to nonvanishing oscillations near a saddle--center point and to nonexistence of a true homoclinic orbit. It was conjectured long ago that the oscillations may vanish at a countable set of small parameter values if there exist a quadruplet of singularities in the complex analytic extension of the limiting homoclinic orbit. The present paper gives a rigorous proof of this conjecture for a particular fourth-order equation relevant to the traveling wave reduction of the modified Korteweg--de Vries equation with the fifth-order dispersion term.

Abstract:We derive a sufficient condition for topological horseshoe and uniform hyperbolicity of a 4-dimensional symplectic map, which is introduced by coupling the two 2-dimensional Hénon maps via linear terms. The coupled Hénon map thus constructed can be viewed as a simple map modeling the horseshoe in higher dimensions. We show that there are two different types of horseshoes, each of which is realized around different anti-integrable limits in the parameter regime.

Abstract:It is known that the topological conjugacy class of a Morse-Smale flows with unique saddle is defined by the equivalence class of the Hopf knot in that is the projection of the one-dimensional saddle separatrix onto the basin of attraction of the nodal point, and the ambient manifold of a diffeomorphism in this class is the 3-sphere. In the present paper a similar result is obtained for gradient-like diffeomorphisms with exactly two saddle points and unique heteroclinic curve. Bibliography: 11 titles.

Abstract:We show a $C^r$ connecting lemma for area-preserving surface diffeomorphisms and for periodic Hamiltonian on surfaces. We prove that for a generic $C^r$, $r=1, 2, ...$, $\infty$, area-preserving diffeomorphism on a compact orientable surface, homotopic to identity, every hyperbolic periodic point has a transversal homoclinic point. We also show that for a $C^r$, $r=1, 2, ...$, $\infty$ generic time periodic Hamiltonian vector field in a compact orientable surface, every hyperbolic periodic trajectory has a transversal homoclinic point. The proof explores the special properties of diffeomorphisms that are generated by Hamiltonian flows.

Abstract:This paper provides a direct method of establishing the existence and uniqueness of saddle-node bifurcations for nonlinear equations in general domains. The method employs the scaled extended quotient whose saddle points correspond to the saddle-node bifurcations. The uniqueness of the saddle-node bifurcation point directly stems from the uniqueness of the saddle point. The method is applied to solving open problems involving the existence and uniqueness of the maximum saddle-node bifurcation for the positive solutions curve to an elliptic boundary value problem with a convex-concave nonlinearity in general domains.

Abstract:The explicit expression of equilibrium solution curve is very important to the study of saddle-node bifurcation point. In this paper, the node voltage equations express as quadratic form through introducing branch current variables, and obtain the explicit expression of power system solutions curve which parameter is branch current. Then, describe the characteristics of saddle-node bifurcation. The dimension of saddle-node bifurcation point is same with the number of jacobian matrix zero eigenvalue by defining the dimension and jacobian matrix eigenvalue analysis. The multiple saddle-node bifurcation point is more close to the stability boundary of power system. We put forward the dimensionality reduction algorithm of multiple saddle-node bifurcation point. The simulation results show that the presented method is correct.

Abstract:In this paper we give analytic proofs of the existence of transversal homoclinic points for a family of non-globally smooth diffeomorphisms having the origin as a fixed point which come out as a truncated map governing the local dynamics near a critical period three cycle associated to the Secant map. Using Moser's version of Birkhoff-Smale's Theorem, we prove that the boundary of the basin of attraction of the origin contains a Cantor-like invariant subset such that the restricted dynamics to it is conjugate to the full shift of $N$-symbols for any integer $N\ge 2$ or infinity.
