Abstract:We give a necessary and sufficient criterion for an operator in a nest algebra to belong to a proper two-sided ideal of that algebra. Using this result, we describe the strong radical of a nest algebra, and give a general description of the maximal two-sided ideals.

Abstract:We continue the study of the rich family of norm-closed, automorphism invariant ideals of a continuous nest algebra. First we present a unified framework which captures all stable ideals as the kernels of limits of diagonal compressions. We then characterize when two such limits give rise to the same ideal, and we obtain detailed information of the structure of sums and intersections of ideals.

Abstract:Using the technique of annihilators, we characterize the w*–closure of the finite–partition submodule ℛ(${\fancyscript N}$,~)of a weakly closed nest algebra module ${\fancyscript U}$ completely; and by virtue of this characterization, we obtain a sufficient and necessary condition for ${\fancyscript U}$ to have a maximal w*–closed submodule.

Abstract:The existence of ideal objects, such as maximal ideals in nonzero rings, plays a crucial role in commutative algebra. These are typically justified using Zorn's lemma, and thus pose a challenge from a computational point of view. Giving a constructive meaning to ideal objects is a problem which dates back to Hilbert's program, and today is still a central theme in the area of dynamical algebra, which focuses on the elimination of ideal objects via syntactic methods. In this paper, we take an alternative approach based on Kreisel's no counterexample interpretation and sequential algorithms. We first give a computational interpretation to an abstract maximality principle in the countable setting via an intuitive, state based algorithm. We then carry out a concrete case study, in which we give an algorithmic account of the result that in any commutative ring, the intersection of all prime ideals is contained in its nilradical.

M-ideals in real operator algebras

Abstract:In a recent paper we showed that a subspace of a real JBW*-triple is an M-summand if and only if it is a weak*-closed triple ideal. As a consequence, M-ideals of real JB*-triples, including real C*-algebras, real JB*-algebras and real TROs, correspond to norm-closed triple ideals. In the present paper we extend this result to (possibly non-selfadjoint) real operator algebras and Jordan operator algebras, where the argument is necessarily different. We also give simple characterizations of one-sided M-ideals in real operator algebras, and give some applications to that theory.

When has linear entries, the algebraic structure of the Rees algebra is well-understood under the additional assumption that the minimal number of generators of I is bounded locally up to codimension . In the first part of this article, we determine the defining ideal of under the weaker assumption that such condition holds only up to codimension , generalizing previous work of P. H. L. Nguyen. In the second part, we use generic Bourbaki ideals to extend our findings to Rees algebras of linearly presented modules of projective dimension one.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group, and let (P(G); +, o) be the near-ring of all unary polynomial functions on G. We describe the maximal ideals of this near-ring. Our approach also allows us to determine the maximal congruences of the composition algebra of polynomial functions on a finite Σ-group. We apply these results to find the maximal ideals of a finite near-ring with 1 that is faithful on its constants. In some occasions, the intersection of the maximal ideals yields an ideal that has properties that are similar to nilpotency.

On maximally symmetric subalgebras

Abstract:Let $\k$ be a characteristic zero PID, $S$ be a $\k$-algebra and $T\subseteq S$ be a full rank subalgebra. Suppose the algebra $T$ is symmetric. It is important to know when $T$ is a {\em maximal symmetric subalgebra} of $S$, i.e. no $\k$-subalgebra $C$ satisfying $T\subsetneq C\subseteq S$ is symmetric. In this note we establish a useful sufficient condition for this using a notion of a quasi-unit of an algebra. This condition is used to obtain an old and a new results on maximal symmetricity for generalized Schur algebras corresponding to certain Brauer tree algebras. The old result was used in our work with Evseev on RoCK blocks of symmetric groups. The new result will be used in our forthcoming work on RoCK blocks of double covers of symmetric groups.

Abstract:In classical and real algebraic geometry there are several notions of the radical of an ideal I. There is the vanishing radical defined as the set of all real polynomials vanishing on the real zero set of I, and the real radical defined as the smallest real ideal containing I. By the real Nullstellensatz they coincide. This paper focuses on extensions of these to the free algebra R<x,x^*> of noncommutative real polynomials in x=(x_1,...,x_g) and x^*=(x_1^*,...,x_g^*). We work with a natural notion of the (noncommutative real) zero set V(I) of a left ideal I in the free algebra. The vanishing radical of I is the set of all noncommutative polynomials p which vanish on V(I). In this paper our quest is to find classes of left ideals I which coincide with their vanishing radical. We completely succeed for monomial ideals and homogeneous principal ideals. We also present the case of principal univariate ideals with a degree two generator and find that it is very messy. Also we give an algorithm (running under NCAlgebra) which checks if a left ideal is radical or is not, and illustrate how one uses our implementation of it.

Abstract:We prove when a Banach ideal of linear operators defined, or characterized, by the transformation of vector-valued sequences is maximal. Known results are recovered as particular cases and new information is obtained. To accomplish this task, we study a tensor quasi-norm determined by the underlying sequence classes. The duality theory for these tensor quasi-norms is also developed.

Abstract:This paper studies the abelian subalgebras and ideals of maximal dimension of Poisson algebras $\mathcal{P}$ of dimension $n$. We introduce the invariants $\alpha$ and $\beta$ for Poisson algebras, which correspond to the dimension of an abelian subalgebra and ideal of maximal dimension, respectively. We prove that these invariants coincide if $\alpha(\mathcal{P}) = n-1$. We characterize the Poisson algebras with $\alpha(\mathcal{P}) = n-2$ over arbitrary fields. In particular, we characterize Lie algebras $L$ with $\alpha(L) = n-2$. We also show that $\alpha(\mathcal{P}) = n-2$ for nilpotent Poisson algebras implies $\beta(\mathcal{P})=n-2$. Finally, we study these invariants for various distinguished Poisson algebras, providing us with several examples and counterexamples.

Abstract:Let be an inclusion of -algebras. We study the relationship between the regular ideals of B and regular ideals of A . We show that if is a regular -inclusion and there is a faithful invariant conditional expectation from A onto B , then there is an isomorphism between the lattice of regular ideals of A and invariant regular ideals of B . We study properties of inclusions preserved under quotients by regular ideals. This includes showing that if is a Cartan inclusion and J is a regular ideal in A , then is a Cartan subalgebra of A / J . We provide a description of regular ideals in the reduced crossed product of a C -algebra by a discrete group.

Abstract:It is well-known that within Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory (ZF), the Axiom of Choice (AC) implies the Maximal Ideal Theorem (MIT), namely that every nontrivial commutative ring has a maximal ideal. The converse implication MIT $\Rightarrow$ AC was first proved by Hodges, with subsequent proofs given by Banaschewski and Erné. Here we give another derivation of MIT $\Rightarrow$ AC, aiming to make the exposition self-contained and accessible to non-experts with only introductory familiarity with commutative ring theory and naive set theory.
