Abstract:We consider metric ultraproducts of finite groups with respect to some classes of length functions. All sofic groups embed into these ultraproducts. We study embeddings of normed groups. We also show that in some natural situations such an ultraproduct is a simple group.

Abstract:We characterise the simplicity of metric ultraproducts of a family of metric groups. We also present several new examples of simple groups, such as metric ultraproducts of finite and infinite symmetric groups, linear groups, and interval exchange transformation groups. Using similar methods, we also examine concepts such as genericity, perfectness, and torsion.

Abstract:For a metric space $X$ with a compatible measure $\mu$, Genevois and Tessera defined the Scaling Group of $(X,\mu)$ as the subgroup $\Gamma$ of $\mathbb{R}_{>0}$ of positive real numbers $\gamma$ for which there are quasi-isometries of $X$ coarsely scaling $\mu$ by a factor of $\gamma$. We show that for any finitely generated subgroup $\Gamma$ of $\mathbb{R}_{>0}$ there exists a space $N_\Gamma$, bi-Lipschitz equivalent to a graph of finite degree, with scaling group $\Gamma$.

Groups which are metrically weakly sofic with respect to word norms

Abstract:We consider metric versions of weak soficity, LEF and residual finiteness. The main results of the paper extend Glebsky and Rivera's characterization of weak soficity to the case of normally finitely generated groups with word metrics. Metric LEF and residual finiteness are also characterized in this class. We deduce that the free group $\mathsf{F}_2$ is not metrically weakly sofic with respect to its standard invariant word norm.

Abstract:We study stability of metric approximations of countable groups with respect to groups endowed with ultrametrics, the main case study being a $p$-adic analogue of Ulam stability, where we take $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ as approximating groups instead of $\mathrm{U}(n)$. For finitely presented groups, the ultrametric nature implies equivalence of the pointwise and uniform stability problems, and the profinite one implies that the corresponding approximation property is equivalent to residual finiteness. Moreover, a group is uniformly stable if and only if its largest residually finite quotient is. We provide several examples of uniformly stable groups, including finite groups, virtually free groups, some groups acting on rooted trees, and certain lamplighter and (Generalized) Baumslag--Solitar groups. We construct a finitely generated group that is not uniformly stable. Finally, we prove and apply a (bounded) cohomological criterion for stability of a finitely presented group.

Finiteness properties of some groups of local similarities

Abstract:Hughes has defined a class of groups, which we call FSS (finite similarity structure) groups. Each FSS group acts on a compact ultrametric space by local similarities. The best-known example is Thompson's group V. Guided by previous work on Thompson's group V, we establish a number of new results about FSS groups. Our main result is that a class of FSS groups are of type F-infinity. This generalizes work of Ken Brown from the 1980s. Next, we develop methods for distinguishing between isomorphism types of some of the Nekrashevych-Röver groups V_{d}(H), where H is a finite group, and show that all such groups V_{d}(H) have simple subgroups of finite index. Lastly, we show that FSS groups defined by small Sim-structures are braided diagram groups over tree-like semigroup presentations. This generalizes a result of Guba and Sapir, who first showed that Thompson's group V is a braided diagram group.

Concerning Keisler Measures over ultraproducts

Abstract:As consequence of the VC theorem, any pseudo-finite measure over an NIP ultraproduct is generically stable. We demonstrate a converse of this theorem and prove that any finitely approximable measure over an ultraproduct is itself pseudo-finite (even without the NIP assumption). We also analyze the connection between the Morley product and the pseudo-finite product. In particular, we show that if $\mu$ is definable and both $\mu$ and $\nu$ are pseudo-finite, then the Morley product of $\mu$ and $\nu$ agrees with the pseudo-finite product of $\mu$ and $\nu$. Using this observation, we construct generically stable idempotent measures on pseudo-finite NIP groups.

Isoperimetric Profiles and Regular Embeddings of locally compact groups

Abstract:In this article we extend the notion of $L^p$-measured subgroups couplings; a quantitative asymmetric version of measure equivalence that was introduced by Delabie, Koivisto, Le Maître and Tessera for finitely generated groups, to the setting of locally compact compactly generated unimodular groups. As an example of these couplings; using ideas from Bader and Rosendal, we prove a "dynamical criteria" for the existence of regular embeddings between amenable locally compact compactly generated unimodular groups, namely the existence of an $L^\infty$-measured subgroup coupling that is coarsely $m$ to $1$. We then proceed to prove that the existence of an $L^p$-measured subgroup that is coarsely $m$ to $1$ implies the monotonicity of the $L^p$-isoperimetric profile. We conclude then that the $L^p$-isoperimetric profile is monotonous under regular embeddings, as well as coarse embeddings, between amenable unimodular locally compact compactly generated groups.

On Ulam widths of finitely presented infinite simple groups

Abstract:A fundamental notion in group theory, which originates in an article of Ulam and von Neumann from $1947$ is uniform simplicity. A group $G$ is said to be $n$-uniformly simple for $n \in \mathbf{N}$ if for every $f,g\in G\setminus \{id\}$, there is a product of no more than $n$ conjugates of $g$ and $g^{-1}$ that equals $f$. Then $G$ is uniformly simple if it is $n$-uniformly simple for some $n \in \mathbf{N}$, and we refer to the smallest such $n$ as the Ulam width, denoted as $\mathcal{R}(G)$. If $G$ is simple but not uniformly simple, one declares $\mathcal{R}(G)=\infty$. In this article, we construct for each $n\in \mathbf{N}$, a finitely presented infinite simple group $G$ such that $n<\mathcal{R}(G)<\infty$. To our knowledge, these are the first such examples among the class of finitely presented infinite simple groups. Moreover, our examples are also of type $F_{\infty}$, which means that they are fundamental groups of aspherical CW complexes with finitely many cells in each dimension. Uniformly simple groups are in particular uniformly perfect: there is an $n\in \mathbf{N}$ such that every element of the group can be expressed as a product of at most $n$ commutators of elements in the group. We also show that the analogous notion of width for uniform perfection is also unbounded for our family of finitely presented infinite simple groups. Finally, since these notions of width are invariants of elementary equivalence, our construction also provides a natural infinite family of pairwise non-elementarily equivalent finitely presented infinite simple groups.

Sublinear Bilipschitz Equivalence and the Quasiisometric Classification of Solvable Lie Groups

Abstract:We prove a product theorem for sublinear bilipschitz equivalences which generalizes the classical work of Kapovich, Kleiner and Leeb on quasiisometries between product spaces. Independently we develop a new tool, based on a theorem of Cornulier on sublinear bilipschitz equivalences between solvable Lie groups, to evaluate the distortion of certain subgroups in central extensions. This is useful to provide lower bounds on Dehn functions. Building on work of Cornulier and Tessera, we compute the Dehn functions of all simply connected solvable Lie groups of exponential growth up to dimension $5$. We employ our product theorem to distinguish up to quasiisometry certain families among these groups which share the same dimension, cone-dimension and Dehn function. Finally, using a theorem of Peng together with our computations of cone-dimensions and Dehn functions, we establish the quasiisometric rigidity of the rank-two, five-dimensional solvable Lie group acting simply transitively by isometries on the horosphere in general position inside the product of three real hyperbolic planes.

Abstract:We study graph products of groups from the viewpoint of measured group theory. We first establish a full measure equivalence classification of graph products of countably infinite groups over finite simple graphs with no transvection and no partial conjugation. This finds applications to their classification up to commensurability, and up to isomorphism, and to the study of their automorphism groups. We also derive structural properties of von Neumann algebras associated to probability measure-preserving actions of graph products. Variations of the measure equivalence classification statement are given with fewer assumptions on the defining graphs. We also provide a quantified version of our measure equivalence classification theorem, that keeps track of the integrability of associated cocycles. As an application, we solve an inverse problem in quantitative orbit equivalence for a large family of right-angled Artin groups. We then establish several rigidity theorems. First, in the spirit of work of Monod-Shalom, we achieve rigidity in orbit equivalence for probability measure-preserving actions of graph products, upon imposing extra ergodicity assumptions. Second, we establish a sufficient condition on the defining graph and on the vertex groups ensuring that a graph product G is rigid in measure equivalence among torsion-free groups (in the sense that every torsion-free countable group H which is measure equivalent to G, is in fact isomorphic to G). Using variations over the Higman groups as the vertex groups, we construct the first example of a group which is rigid in measure equivalence, but not in quasi-isometry, among torsion-free groups.

Finite subgroups of the profinite completion of good groups

Abstract:Let $G$ be a residually finite, good group of finite virtual cohomological dimension. We prove that the natural monomorphism $G\hookrightarrow\hat{G}$ induces a bijective correspondence between conjugacy classes of finite $p$-subgroups of $G$ and those of its profinite completion $\hat{G}$. Moreover, we prove that the centralizers and normalizers in $\hat{G}$ of finite $p$-subgroups of $G$ are the closures of the respective centralizers and normalizers in $G$. With somewhat more restrictive hypotheses, we prove the same results for finite solvable subgroups of $G$. In the last section, we give a few applications of this theorem to hyperelliptic mapping class groups and virtually compact special toral relatively hyperbolic groups (these include fundamental groups of $3$-orbifolds and of uniform standard arithmetic hyperbolic orbifolds).

Using this, we define infinite compositions in certain groups of formal power series and show that such series can sometimes be represented as infinite, linearly ordered, semidirect products of ordered Abelian groups.

Intrinsically Lipschitz sections and applications to metric groups

Abstract:We introduce a notion of intrinsically Lipschitz graphs in the context of metric spaces. This is a broad generalization of what in Carnot groups has been considered by Franchi, Serapioni, and Serra Cassano, and later by many others. We proceed by focusing our attention on the graphs as subsets of a metric space given by the image of a section of a quotient map and we require an intrinsically Lipschitz condition. We shall not have any function on a topological product, not we shall consider a metric on the base of the quotient map. Our results are: an Ascoli-Arzelà compactness theorem, an Ahlfors regularity theorem, and some extension theorems for partially defined intrinsically Lipschitz sections. Known results by Franchi, Serapioni, and Serra Cassano, and by Vittone will be our corollaries.

On metric approximate subgroups

Abstract:Let $G$ be a group with a metric $\mathrm{d}$ invariant under left and right translations, and let $\bar{\mathbb{D}}_r$ be the ball of radius $r$ around the identity. A $(k,r)$-metric approximate subgroup is a symmetric subset $X$ of $G$ such that the pairwise product set $XX$ is covered by at most $k$ translates of $X\bar{\mathbb{D}}_r$. This notion was introduced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0601431" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0601431">arXiv:math/0601431</a> along with the version for discrete groups (approximate subgroups). In <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0909.2190" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0909.2190">arXiv:0909.2190</a>, it was shown for the discrete case that, at the asymptotic limit of $X$ finite but large, the "approximateness" (or need for more than one translate) can be attributed to a canonically associated Lie group. Here we prove an analogous result in the metric setting, under a certain finite covering assumption on $X$ replacing finiteness. In particular, if $G$ has bounded exponent, we show that any $(k,r)$-metric approximate subgroup is close to a $(1,r')$-metric approximate subgroup for an appropriate $r'$.

Abstract:We show that for certain class of oligomorphic groups there is a version of multiplication of double cosets in the Ismagilov--Olshanski sense. Categories of (reduced) double cosets are realized as certain categories of partial bijections. As an example, we consider the ultrahomogeneous linear space $\mathcal{Z}$ of countable dimension over afinite field equipped with a cubic form. The group of automorphisms of $\mathcal{Z}$ is an oligomorphic group, we describe its open subgroups. According Tsankov, this gives a classification of its unitary representations. The category of reduced double cosets in this case is the category of partial linear bijections of finite-dimensional cubic spaces preserving cubic forms.
