Abstract:We introduce a formalism for considering infinite, linearly ordered products in groups. Using this, we define infinite compositions in certain groups of formal power series and show that such series can sometimes be represented as infinite, linearly ordered, semidirect products of ordered Abelian groups.

Abstract:Abstract We study a countably infinite iteration of the natural product between ordinals.We present an “effective” way to compute this countable natural product; in the non trivial cases the result depends only on the natural sum of the degrees of the factors, where the degree of a nonzero ordinal is the largest exponent in its Cantor normal form representation. Thus we are able to lift former results about infinitary sums to infinitary products. Finally, we provide an order-theoretical characterization of the infinite natural product; this characterization merges in a nontrivial way a theorem by Carruth describing the natural product of two ordinals and a known description of the ordinal product of a possibly infinite sequence of ordinals.

Abstract:We generalize the lexicographic product of first-order structures by presenting a framework for constructions which, in a sense, mimic iterating the lexicographic product infinitely and not necessarily countably many times. We then define dense substructures in infinite products and show that any countable product of countable transitive homogeneous structures has a unique countable dense substructure, up to isomorphism. Furthermore, this dense substructure is transitive, homogeneous and elementarily embeds into the product. This result is then utilized to construct a rigid elementarily indivisible structure.

Abstract:We introduce an elementary class of linearly ordered groups, called growth order groups, encompassing certain groups under composition of formal series (e.g. transseries) as well as certain groups $\mathcal{G}_{\mathcal{M}}$ of infinitely large germs at infinity of unary functions definable in an o-minimal structure $\mathcal{M}$. We study the algebraic structure of growth order groups and give methods for constructing examples. We show that if $\mathcal{M}$ expands the real ordered field and germs in $\mathcal{G}_{\mathcal{M}}$ are levelled in the sense of Marker & Miller, then $\mathcal{G}_{\mathcal{M}}$ is a growth order group.

Abstract:We study algebraic properties of the semigroup $\mathscr{O\!\!I\!}_n(L)$ of finite partial order isomorphisms of the rank $\leq n$ of an infinite linearly ordered set $(L,\leqslant)$. In particular we describe its idempotents, the natural partial order and Green's relations on $\mathscr{O\!\!I\!}_n(L)$. It is proved that the semigroup $\mathscr{O\!\!I\!}_n(L)$ is stable and it contains tight ideal series. Moreover, we show that the semigroup $\mathscr{O\!\!I\!}_n(L)$ admits only Rees' congruences and every its homomorphic image is a semigroup with tight ideal series.

Abstract:Recently, the authors gave some conditions under which a direct product of finitely many groups is $\mathcal{V}-$capable if and only if each of its factors is $\mathcal{V}-$capable for some varieties $\mathcal{V}$. In this paper, we extend this fact to any infinite direct product of groups. Moreover, we conclude some results for $\mathcal{V}-$capability of direct products of infinitely many groups in varieties of abelian, nilpotent and polynilpotent groups.

Abstract:A product of compact normal spaces is normal; the product of a countably infinite collection of non-trivial spaces is normal if and only if it is countably paracompact and each of its finite sub-products is normal; if all powers of a space X are normal then X is compact: provided in each case that the spaces involved are T1. Here I examine the situation for infinite products not required to be T1 (or regular), extending or generalizing each of these facts. In addition, I prove some related results, give a number of examples, explore some alternative proofs, and close with some speculation regarding potential applications of these findings to category theory and lattice theory.

Abstract:We develop in this paper general techniques to analyze local combinatorial structures in product sets of two subsets of a countable group which are "large" with respect to certain classes of (not necessarily invariant) means on the group. As applications of our methods, we extend and quantify a series of recent results by Jin, Bergelson-Furstenberg-Weiss, Beiglböck-Bergelson-Fish, Griesmer and DiNasso-Lupini to general countable groups.

Abstract:We give a classification and complete algebraic description of groups allowing only finitely many (left multiplication invariant) circular orders. In particular, they are all solvable groups with a specific semi-direct product decomposition. This allows us to also show that the space of circular orders of any group is either finite or uncountable. As a special case and first step, we show that the space of circular orderings of an infinite Abelian group has no isolated points, hence is homeomorphic to a cantor set.

Abstract:Motivated by the study of the large-scale geometry of topological groups, we investigate particular families of subsets of topological groups named group ideals. We compare different group ideals in the realm of locally compact groups. In particular, we show that a subset of a locally compact abelian group is relatively compact if and only if it is coarsely bounded. Using this result, we prove that an infinite-dimensional Banach space cannot be embedded into any product of locally compact groups.

On the order sequence of a group

Abstract:This paper provides a bridge between two active areas of research, the spectrum (set of element orders) and the power graph of a finite group. The order sequence of a finite group $G$ is the list of orders of elements of the group, arranged in non-decreasing order. Order sequences of groups of order $n$ are ordered by elementwise domination, forming a partially ordered set. We prove a number of results about this poset, among them the following. M.~Amiri recently proved that the poset has a unique maximal element, corresponding to the cyclic group. We show that the product of orders in a cyclic group of order $n$ is at least $q^{\phi(n)}$ times as large as the product in any non-cyclic group,where $q$ is the smallest prime divisor of $n$ and $\phi$ is Euler's function, with a similar result for the sum. The poset of order sequences of abelian groups of order $p^n$ is naturally isomorphic to the (well-studied) poset of partitions of $n$ with its natural partial order. If there exists a non-nilpotent group of order $n$, then there exists such a group whose order sequence is dominated by the order sequence of any nilpotent group of order $n$. There is a product operation on finite ordered sequences, defined by forming all products and sorting them into non-decreasing order. The product of order sequences of groups $G$ and $H$ is the order sequence of a group if and only if $|G|$ and $|H|$ are coprime. The paper concludes with a number of open problems.

Abstract:We prove that the product of a subset and a normal subset inside any finite simple non‐abelian group G grows rapidly. More precisely, if A and B are two subsets with B normal and neither of them is too large inside G , then |AB|⩾|A||B|1−ε where ε>0 can be taken arbitrarily small. This is a somewhat surprising strengthening of a theorem of Liebeck, Schul, and Shalev.

Abstract:A profinite group $G$ is just infinite if every closed normal subgroup of $G$ is of finite index. We prove that an infinite profinite group is just infinite if and only if, for every open subgroup $H$ of $G$, there are only finitely many open normal subgroups of $G$ not contained in $H$. This extends a result recently established by Barnea, Gavioli, Jaikin-Zapirain, Monti and Scoppola, who proved the same characterisation in the case of pro-$p$ groups. We also use this result to establish a number of features of the general structure of profinite groups with regard to the just infinite property.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the product of orders of composition factors of odd order in a composition series of a finite linear group. First we generalize a result by Manz and Wolf about the order of solvable linear groups of odd order. Then we use this result to find bounds for the product of orders of composition factors of odd order in a composition series of a finite linear group.

Abstract:We construct the first examples of finitely presented simple groups of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the real line. Our examples are also of type $F_{\infty}$, have infinite geometric dimension, and admit a nontrivial homogeneous quasimorphism (and hence have infinite commutator width).

Abstract:An old problem in group theory is that of describing how the order of an element behaves under multiplication. To generalize some classical bounds concerning the order $\mathrm o(ab)$ of two elements $a, b$ in a finite abelian group to the non-commutative case, we replace $\mathrm o(ab)$ with a notion of mutual order $\mathrm o(a, b)$, defined as the least positive integer $n$ such that $a^nb^n = 1$. Motivated by this, we then compare $\mathrm o(ab)$ and $\mathrm o(a, b)$ in finite nilpotent groups, and show that in a group of class $\gamma$, the ratio $\mathrm o(ab)/\mathrm o(a, b)$ lies in some fixed finite set $S(\gamma) \subset \mathbb Q$, whose elements do not involve prime factors exceeding $\gamma$. In particular, we generalize a result of P. Hall, which asserts that $\mathrm o(ab) = \mathrm o(a, b)$ in $p$-groups with $p > \gamma$. We end with a more detailed analysis for groups of class 2, which allows one to give a more explicit description of $\mathrm o(ab)/\mathrm o(a, b)$.

Abstract:Let $G$ and $H$ be groups that act compatibly on each other. We denote by $[G,H]$ the derivative subgroup of $G$ under $H$. We prove that if the set $\{g^{-1}g^h \mid g \in G, h \in H\}$ has $m$ elements, then the derivative $[G,H]$ is finite with $m$-bounded order. Moreover, we show that if the set of all tensors $T_{\otimes}(G,H) = \{g\otimes h \mid g \in G, h\in H\}$ has $m$ elements, then the non-abelian tensor product $G \otimes H$ is finite with $m$-bounded order. We also examine some finiteness conditions for the non-abelian tensor square of groups.
