Abstract:In this work, the novel Gd 3 Y precipitates in Mg 96 Gd 2 Y 1 Ni 1 and Mg 96 Gd 2 Y 1 Cu 1 alloys were experimentally characterized for the first time using aberration-corrected HAADF-STEM. The experimental results showed that the distribution of the precipitated phases in the matrix of the two alloys was different. The precipitation is uniformly and diffusely distributed in the Mg 96 Gd 2 Y 1 Cu 1 alloy, while in the Mg 96 Gd 2 Y 1 Ni 1 alloy, it grows only on the outer side of the long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure. Meanwhile, this novel precipitation exists mainly as rectangular and rhombic blocks in Mg 96 Gd 2 Y 1 Cu 1 alloy, while it grows as ellipsoidal shapes on the outer side of the LPSO structure in Mg 96 Gd 2 Y 1 Ni 1 alloy. Moreover, the experimental measurements are identical to the lattice constants and atomic layer spacing provided by the crystal structure. Meanwhile, in this work, the energy properties such as interfacial energy and adhesion work at the precipitation/matrix interface were calculated for the first time by applying the first principles. The calculation results indicated that the Gd3Y(110)/Mg(112̅0) interface has a larger adhesion work and smaller interfacial energy compared to the GdY3(110)/Mg(112̅0) interface. This indicates that the Gd3Y(110)/Mg(112̅0) interface has better interfacial bonding strength. Simultaneously, the interfacial property calculations indicated that Gd 3 Y precipitation was more stable than GdY 3 precipitation. The calculations also prove that this precipitate is indeed a Gd 3 Y inorganic compound, which is consistent with our experimental characterization. The experimental data and theoretical calculations in this paper will provide fundamental insights for the continued study of novel Gd 3 Y compounds in the future.
