Abstract:We evaluated the following properties of 13 ionic liquids (ILs) and their mixtures with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at a constant mole fraction of DMSO = 0.6 and at 40 °C: empirical solvent polarity (expressed as E T (RB) in kcal mol −1 ), Lewis acidity ( SA ), Lewis basicity ( SB ), IL molecular volume ( V M ; correlated with solvent dipolarity), and the Lorenz-Lorentz refractive index function ( f (n); correlated with solvent polarizability). The IL cations are 1-(1-butyl)-3-methylimidazolium, and 1-(1-butyl)-2,3-dimethylimidazolium, the IL anions are carboxylates (acetate and propionate) and those of amino acids: glycinate, α-alaninate, β-alaninate, serinate, threoninate, S -methylcysteinate, methioninate, and lysinate. Five of the synthesized amino acid-based ILs (AAILs) are novel . The calculated E T (RB) values showed excellent multiple correlation coefficient ( R ) with the independent variables ( SA , SB , V M , and f (n)) for both pure ILs and their solutions in DMSO. The corresponding regression coefficients showed that SA , SB , and f (n) contribute positively to E T (RB), while V M has the opposite effect. Hydrogen bonding effects ( SA and SB ) were found to be most significant; whereas V M and f (n) play less important roles. AAILs containing the 1-(1-butyl)-2,3-dimethylimidazolium cation exhibited lower Lewis acidity compared to those containing the 1-(1-butyl)-3-methylimidazolium cation, due to the absence of C2- H in the imidazolium ring. Our findings have implications for the selection of appropriate AAILs for various applications, including drug delivery and dissolution of biopolymers. The reason is that solvatochromic probes, when properly selected, are representative models for biopolymers and drugs.
