Abstract:The refractive indices of naturally occurring materials are limited, and there exists an index gap between indices of air and available solid materials. With many photonics and electronics applications, there has been considerable effort in creating artificial materials with optical and dielectric properties similar to air while simultaneously being mechanically stable to bear load. Here, a class of ordered nanolattice materials consisting of periodic thin‐shell structures with near‐unity refractive index and high stiffness is demonstrated. Using a combination of 3D nanolithography and atomic layer deposition, these ordered nanostructured materials have reduced optical scattering and improved mechanical stability compared to existing randomly porous materials. Using ZnO and Al2O3 as the building materials, refractive indices from 1.3 down to 1.025 are achieved. The experimental data can be accurately described by Maxwell Garnett effective media theory, which can provide a guide for index design. The demonstrated low‐index, low‐scattering, and high‐stiffness materials can serve as high‐quality optical films in multilayer photonic structures, waveguides, resonators, and ultra‐low‐k dielectrics.

Abstract:A multilayer dielectric cylindrical mirror (MDCM) based on the one-dimensional omnidirectional reflection of a photonic crystal is presented. In this case, the refractive indices of the two materials are 1.6 (polystyrene) and 4.6 (tellurium), and the corresponding optimized thicknesses are 0.75a and 0.25a. A very high reflectance over a wide frequency range is observed. In this case, a is the lattice constant of the photonic crystal. In this band, the MDCM has good reflection and focal properties. Therefore, it is feasible to use the MDCM for integrated waveguide devices. As an example, an etched diffraction grating demultiplexer based on the MDCM is also proposed. Both the operational principle and design of the device are introduced. This provides a method for designing compact integrated waveguide devices.

Abstract:We report an all-dielectric lossless optical mirror for the realization of controllable reflection phase based on an array of isolated dielectric nanoresonators. This dielectric mirror is comprised of a cross-shaped amorphous silicon nanoresonator array that has been designed to achieve a 99.8% reflectivity and zero reflection phase at the wavelength of 0.99 μm. The measured results from the fabricated sample match the theoretical predictions with 99.5% reflectivity and near-zero degree reflection phase at 1 μm, which is very close to the targeted wavelength. This concept and approach pave the way for synthesizing lossless artificial reflecting electromagnetic boundaries with arbitrary phase response and hold great promise in applications ranging from nanocavities to nanowaveguides and nanoantennas.

Abstract:We have designed, optimized, fabricated and characterized highly reflective quasi-omnidirectional (angular range of $0-60^\circ$) multilayered structures with a wide spectral range. Two techniques, chirping (a continuous change in thicknesses) and stacking of Bragg-type sub-structures, have been used to enhance the reflectance with minimum thickness for a given pair of refractive indices. Numerical calculations were carried out employing the transfer matrix method and we optimized the design parameters to obtain maximal reflectance averaged over different spectral ranges for all angles. We fabricated some of the optimized structures with porous silicon dielectric multilayers with low refractive contrast and compared their measured optical properties with the calculations. Two chirped structures with thicknesses 21.6 $\mu$m and 60.4 $\mu$m, resulting in quasi omnidirectional mirrors with bandwidths of 360 nm and 1800 nm, centered at 1160 nm and 1925 nm respectively have been shown. In addition, we fabricated a stacked sub-Bragg mirror structure with a quasi omnidirectional bandwidth of 1800 nm (centered at 1850 nm) and a thickness of 41.5 $\mu$m, which is almost two third (in thickness) of the chirped structure. Thus, our techniques allowed us to obtain relatively thin quasi-omnidirectional mirrors with wide bands over different wavelength ranges. Our analysis techniques can be used for the optimization of the reflectance not only in multilayered PS systems with different refractive index contrasts but also for systems with other types of materials with low refractive index contrast. The present study could also be useful for obtaining omnidirectional dielectric mirrors in large spectral regions using different materials, flat focusing reflectors, thermal regulators, or, if defects are included, as filters or remote chemical/biosensors with a wide angular independent response.

Abstract:Periodic ferroelectric multilayers consisting of alternating stack of the dense and porous Ba0.9Sr0.1TiO3 layers have been fabricated by spin-coating and annealing sol-gel techniques using one single precursor. With 16 periods, the Ba0.9Sr0.1TiO3 multilayers exhibit excellent performance as dielectric mirrors: symmetric peak reflectivities of above 95% and flattopped stop bands of about 75nm. The reflectance peak position is tunable through varying the spinning rate in the spin-coating process. The lead-free Ba0.9Sr0.1TiO3 multilayers show high stability.

Abstract:PbZr0.4Ti0.6O3 multilayer, comprising of three PbZr0.4Ti0.6O3 stacks with a slight difference in their periodic thickness, has been designed and fabricated on FTO substrate based on one single chemical solution and on the simple spinning-coating and annealing technique. The obtained multilayer exhibits a high reflectivity band with 110 nm photonic stop-band width and average reflectivity of over 80% at room temperature, rendering the novel arrange of PbZr0.4Ti0.6O3 multilayer system a promising candidate as tunable dielectric mirrors, optical cavities and selective filters.

Abstract:Typically the phase velocity of light propagating through a material is smaller than the speed of light in free space, but in the vicinity of strong, optically active material resonances the opposite can hold true, and the material’s refractive index n drops below 1. This work explores optical phenomena made possible by this reduction of n of dielectric materials near optical-phonon resonances, including frustrated external reflection and direct coupling to surface plasmons. These possibilities will have an impact on optics applications, including cloaking, sensing, angular filtering, and air-core waveguiding.

Abstract:With proper structure, one-dimensional (1D) binary nonperiodic dielectric multilayers can own compact strucuture and provide widely extended stop band from visible to infrared which is insensitive to the angle of incidence. The striking phenomenon attributes to the combining effect of Bragg reflection and light localization induced by disorder. The characteristic parameters to describe 1D binary nonperiodic dielectric multilayers are well defined. Material parameters of MgF2 and GaP are used to model 1D realistic device. Optimal design is suggested by comparison to binary λ0/4 stack reflectors with the same optical length, number of layers and degree of disorder.

Abstract:We report here the reflection of electromagnetic waves in self-similar Thue-Morse dielectric multilayers, which presents the features of multiple omnidirectional photonic bandgaps (PBGs). The number and the width of omnidirectional PBG depend on the ratio of the refraction indexes and the thicknesses of the dielectric materials. The theoretical result is partly verified by optical observation in Thue-Morse TiO2/SiO2 multilayers with visible and near-infrared light. Our investigations provide a new approach to achieve the omnidirectional reflection in multiple frequency ranges. With this progress, the application of dielectric reflection mirrors can be further widened.

Abstract:The optical reflection properties of material surfaces are crucial for the performance of many optical and optoelectronic devices. In this study, different single-scale surface structures, e.g., gratings, holes, and cones were fabricated via laser micro/nano-processing and their optical properties were determined. The anti-reflection mechanism for these surface structures was revealed visually by using a ray-tracing algorithm and wave optics calculations. To fully exploit the advantages of single-scale nanostructures or microstructures, a novel preparation method for multi/scale structures was proposed. It not only improves absorption efficiency, but also broadens the absorption spectrum. Moreover, a substantial improvement of the infrared anti-reflection performance was realized. In addition, the relationship between the characteristic of surface structure and the spectral region in response to incident light, was established.

Development of High-Quality Polymer/Air-Bragg Micromirror Structures for Nanophotonic Applications

Abstract:We report the design, nanofabrication, and characterization of high-quality polymer-based micromirror structures employing the 3D two-photon polymerization lithography technique. Compared to conventional microcavity approaches, our innovative concept provides microstructures which allow fast prototyping. Moreover, our polymer-based mirrors are cost effective, environmentally sensitive, as well as compatible with a wide range of wavelengths from NIR to the telecom C-band. We demonstrate polymer/air distributed Bragg reflectors and full microcavity structures with up to 14 mirror pairs with a target wavelength of 1550 nm and a reflectivity close to 99%. Additionally, our 3D printed micromirrors are reproducible, mechanically stable, and enable hybrid nanophotonic devices based on quantum dots, molecules or 2D quantum materials as active medium.

Abstract:In conventional edge-emitting lasers, mirror reflectivity is /spl sim/0.3-0.4 so that very short cavities have an unacceptable loss. To decrease the mirror losses, one can conceive of an external distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) structure produced by etching. We examine the design considerations for such mirrors. Using a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) scheme, we numerically simulate the propagation of a Gaussian wave packet in a laser cavity with an external DBR structure on one end. We find that despite the divergence of light at the semiconductor-air interface, high reflectivities (>90%) can be obtained using only a few mirrors, provided a low refractive index material (such as air) is one of the components of the DBR period. In our modeling, we include fluctuations based on factors such as lithographical error, etch error, and off-design wavelength lasing. Our results indicate that the external DBR is highly tolerant of such factors. In addition, simulations done using material with higher refractive index than air in the DBR structure indicate that it is possible for insulators to be deposited in the DBR structure, yet allow high reflectivity.

Abstract:We have theoretically investigated the optical properties of multilayer structures composed of a highly absorptive metal film and a photonic crystal with defects. It is found that when the photonic crystal containing defects is asymmetric, multiple near-perfect reflection peaks at defect wavelengths will appear within the total absorption broadband of the multilayer because of the highly absorptive metal film, while the high transmission peaks appear when the photonic crystal with defects is nearly symmetric. Such properties are significant for designing particular multichannel reflection and transmission filters in the visible and near infrared regions.

Abstract:The influence of a dielectric layer with an embedded 2D array of metal nanoparticles on the spectral characteristics of a distributed Bragg reflector is theoretically studied and numerically validated. A significant dependence of the reflectivity of the hybrid structure on the location of the nanoparticle array relative to the maxima and minima of the optical field in the surface dielectric layer is demonstrated. It is found that the application of a dilute ensemble of nanoparticles (the interparticle distance is from 2 to 5 times larger than the nanoparticle size) in the region of high optical field localization makes it possible to obtain a total suppression of reflection in the photonic bandgap range of distributed Bragg reflector. Contrariwise, if the optical field is almost zero at the nanoparticle array location, its impact on the scattered light is negligible, that is, the resonant nanoparticles are masked by a highly reflective photonic structure. The target wavelength can be tuned inside the photonic bandgap range by adjusting the shape of nanoparticles and interparticle distance in the array.

Abstract:It is shown that a single-layer array of high electric permittivity (high-epsilon) rods with a radius smaller than lambda/10 is capable of reflecting more than 97% of the energy of optical waves with an arbitrary incident angle. Here, lambda is the incident wavelength. The occurrence of the phenomenon depends on the construction of two particular grating modes (GMs) in the array which result in two corresponding transmitted wave components that cancel each other. The construction of the dominant GMs in the array benefits from the highly independent manipulability of the angular momenta components with opposite signs in high-epsilon particles. Abstract:Photonic crystal (PhC) structures with subwavelength periods are widely used for diffractive optics, including high reflectivity membranes with nanoscale thickness. Here, we report on a design procedure for 2D PhC silicon nitride membrane mirrors providing optimal crystal geometry using simulation results obtained with rigorous coupled-wave analysis. The Downhill Simplex algorithm, a robust numerical approach to finding local extrema of a function of multiple variables, is used to optimize the period and hole radius of PhCs with both hexagonal and square lattices, as the membrane thickness is varied. Following these design principles, nanofabricated PhC membranes made from silicon nitride have been used as input couplers for an optical cavity, resulting in a maximum cavity finesse of 33 000, corresponding to a reflectivity of 0.999 82. The role played by the spot size of the cavity mode on the PhC was investigated, demonstrating the existence of an optimal spot size that agrees well with predictions. We find that, compared to the square lattice, the hexagonal lattice exhibits a spectrally wider reflective range, less sensitivity to fabrication tolerances, and higher reflectivity for membranes thinner than 200 nm, which may be advantageous in cavity optomechanical experiments. Finally, we find that all of the cavities that we have constructed exhibit well-resolved polarization mode splitting, which we expect is due primarily to a small amount of anisotropic stress in the silicon nitride and PhC asymmetry arising during fabrication.

Abstract:Negative reflection occurs when light is reflected towards the same side of the normal to the boundary from which it is incident. This exotic optical phenomenon, which provides a new avenue towards light manipulation, is not only yet to be visualized in real space but remains largely unexplored both at the nanoscale and in natural media. Here, we directly visualize nanoscale-confined polaritons negatively reflecting on subwavelength mirrors fabricated in a low-loss van der Waals crystal. Our near-field nanoimaging results unveil an unconventional and broad tunability of both the polaritonic wavelength and direction of propagation upon negative reflection. Based on these findings, we introduce a novel device in nano-optics: a hyperbolic nanoresonator, in which hyperbolic polaritons with different momenta reflect back to a common point source, enhancing its intensity. These results pave the way to realize nanophotonics in low-loss natural media, providing a novel and efficient route to confine and control the flow of light at the nanoscale, key for future optical on-chip nanotechnologies.

Abstract:Recent extreme ultraviolet sources using high-harmonic generation in a rare gas make new optics developments necessary. We report on the study and development of multilayer structures with efficient reflectivity in the 35–75 eV energy range. We have optimized, deposited and characterized two aperiodic broadband mirrors consisting of a Mo, Si and B4C thin-film stack. We used the needle procedure in order to optimize mirror reflectivity. The magnetron sputter deposited multilayers have been calibrated and characterized using Cu Kα grazing incidence X-ray reflectometry. Reflectivity measured at near-normal incidence on a synchrotron radiation source reaches 12% with a full width at half maximum of nearly 40 eV. Experimental results are compared with theoretical simulation using available optical constants for Mo, Si and B4C in this spectral range.
