Abstract:In this paper, we show that Shokurov's conjectures on the ACC for $a$-lc thresholds and the ACC for minimal log discrepancies are equivalent in the interval $[0,1)$. That is, the conjecture on ACC for $a$-lc thresholds holds for every $0\leq a<1$ if and only if the set of minimal log discrepancies for pairs with DCC coefficients do not have an accumulation point from below which belongs to $[0,1)$.

Abstract:We prove that the ascending chain condition (ACC) for log canonical (lc) thresholds in dimension $d$ and Special Termination in dimension $d$ imply the termination of any sequence of log flips starting with a $d$-dimensional lc pair of nonnegative Kodaira dimension. In particular, in characteristic zero, the latter termination in dimension 4 follows from Alexeev-Borisov's conjecture in dimension 3.

Abstract:We show that log canonical thresholds of fixed dimension are standardized. More precisely, we show that any sequence of log canonical thresholds in fixed dimension $d$ accumulates in a way which is i) either similar to how standard and hyperstandard sets accumulate, or ii) to log canonical thresholds in dimension $\leq d-2$. This provides an accurate description on the infinitesimal structure of the set of log canonical thresholds. We also discuss similar behaviors of minimal log discrepancies, canonical thresholds, and K-semistable thresholds.

Abstract:Minimal log discrepancies (mld's) are related not only to termination of log flips, and thus to the existence of log flips but also to the ascending chain condition (acc) of some global invariants and invariants of singularities in the Log Minimal Model Program (LMMP). In this paper, we draw clear links between several central conjectures in the LMMP. More precisely, our main result states that the LMMP, the acc conjecture for mld's and the boundedness of canonical Mori-Fano varieties in dimension $\le d$ imply the following: the acc conjecture for $a$-lc thresholds, in particular, for canonical and log canonical (lc) thresholds in dimension $\le d$; the acc conjecture for lc thresholds in dimension $\le d+1$; termination of log flips in dimension $\le d+1$ for effective pairs; and existence of pl flips in dimension $\le d+2$. This also gives new proofs of some well-known and new results in the field in low dimensions: the acc conjecture holds for $a$-lc thresholds of surfaces; the acc conjecture holds for lc thresholds of 3-folds; termination of 3-fold log flips holds for effective pairs; and the existence of 4-fold pl flips holds.

Abstract:It is proved that any language in ACC can be approximately computed by two-level circuits of size 2 raised to the (log n)/sup k/ power, with a symmetric-function gate at the top and only AND gates on the first level. This implies that any language in ACC can be recognized by depth-3 threshold circuits of that size. This result gives the first nontrivial upper bound on the computing power of ACC circuits.

Abstract:The log canonical threshold (lct) is a fundamental invariant in birational geometry, essential for understanding the complexity of singularities in algebraic varieties. Its real counterpart, the real log canonical threshold (rlct), also known as the learning coefficient, has become increasingly relevant in statistics and machine learning, where it plays a critical role in model selection and error estimation for singular statistical models. In this paper, we investigate the rlct and its multiplicity for real (not necessarily reduced) hyperplane arrangements. We derive explicit combinatorial formulas for these invariants, generalizing earlier results that were limited to specific examples. Moreover, we provide a general algebraic theory for real log canonical thresholds, and present a SageMath implementation for efficiently computing the rlct and its multiplicity in the case or real hyperplane arrangements. Applications to examples are given, illustrating how the formulas also can be used to analyze the asymptotic behavior of high-dimensional volume integrals.

Abstract:Recent study in K-stability suggests that Kawamata log terminal (klt) singularities whose local volumes are bounded away from zero should be bounded up to special degeneration. We show that this is true in dimension three, or when the minimal log discrepancies of Kollár components are bounded from above. We conjecture that the minimal log discrepancies of Kollár components are always bounded from above, and verify it in dimension three when the local volumes are bounded away from zero. We also answer a question from Han, Liu, and Qi on the relation between log canonical thresholds and local volumes.

One-dimensional monoid algebras and ascending chains of principal ideals

Abstract:An integral domain $R$ is called atomic if every nonzero nonunit of $R$ factors into irreducibles, while $R$ satisfies the ascending chain condition on principal ideals if every ascending chain of principal ideals of $R$ stabilizes. It is well known and not hard to verify that if an integral domain satisfies the ACCP, then it must be atomic. The converse does not hold in general, but examples are hard to come by and most of them are the result of crafty and technical constructions. Sporadic constructions of such atomic domains have appeared in the literature in the last five decades, including the first example of a finite-dimensional atomic monoid algebra not satisfying the ACCP recently constructed by the second and third authors. Here we construct the first known one-dimensional monoid algebras satisfying the almost ACCP but not the ACCP (the almost ACCP is a notion weaker than the ACCP but still stronger than atomicity). Although the two constructions we provide here are rather technical, the corresponding monoid algebras are perhaps the most elementary known examples of atomic domains not satisfying the ACCP.

Abstract:Let (X/Z,B+A) be a Q-factorial dlt pair where B,A≥0 are Q-divisors and K X +B+A∼ Q 0/Z. We prove that any LMMP/Z on K X +B with scaling of an ample/Z divisor terminates with a good log minimal model or a Mori fibre space. We show that a more general statement follows from the ACC for lc thresholds. An immediate corollary of these results is that log flips exist for log canonical pairs.

Abstract:A new definition of analytic adjoint ideal sheaves for quasi-plurisubharmonic (quasi-psh) functions with only neat analytic singularities is studied and shown to admit some residue short exact sequences which are obtained by restricting sections of the newly defined adjoint ideal sheaves to some unions of $\sigma$-log-canonical ($\sigma$-lc) centres. The newly defined adjoint ideal sheaves induce naturally some residue $L^2$ norms on the unions of $\sigma$-lc centres which are invariant under log-resolutions. They can also describe unions of $\sigma$-lc centres without the need of log-resolutions even if the quasi-psh functions in question are not in a simple-normal-crossing configuration. This is hinting their potential use in discussing the $\sigma$-lc centres even when the quasi-psh functions in question have more general singularities. Furthermore, their relations between the algebraic adjoint ideal sheaves of Ein--Lazarsfeld as well as those of Hacon--McKernan are described in order to illustrate their role as a (potentially finer) measurement of singularities in the minimal model program. In the course of the study, a local $L^2$ extension theorem is proven, which shows that holomorphic sections on any unions of $\sigma$-lc centres can be extended holomorphically to some neighbourhood of the unions of $\sigma$-lc centres with some $L^2$ estimates. The proof does not rely on the techniques in the Ohsawa--Takegoshi-type $L^2$ extension theorems.

Abstract:Let X, Y be Banach spaces. Of concern are the higher order abstract Cauchy problem (ACP(n)) in X and its inhomogeneous version (IACP(n)). A new operator family of bounded linear operators from Y to X is introduced, called an existence family for (ACP(n)), so that the existence and continuous dependence on initial data of the solutions of (ACP(n)) and (IACP(n)) can be studied, and some basic results in a quite general setting can be obtained. A sufficient and necessary condition ensuring that (ACP(n)) possesses an exponentially bounded existence family, in terms of Laplace transforms, is presented. As a partner of the existence family, for (ACP(n)), a uniqueness family of bounded linear operators on X is defined to guarantee the uniqueness of solutions. These two operator families for (ACP(n)) are generalizations of the classical strongly continuous semigroups and sine operator functions, the C-regularized semigroups and sine operator functions, the existence and uniqueness families for (ACPI), and the C-propagation families for (ACP(n)). They have a special function in treating those ill-posed (ACP(n)) and (IACP(n)) whose coefficient operators lack commutativity.

Abstract:There is a proposition due to Kollár 1997 on computing log canonical thresholds of certain hypersurface germs using weighted blowups, which we extend to weighted blowups with non-negative weights. Using this, we show that the log canonical threshold of a convergent complex power series is at most $1/c$, where $(c, \ldots, c)$ is a point on a facet of its Newton polyhedron. Moreover, in the case $n = 2$, if the power series is weakly normalised with respect to this facet or the point $(c, c)$ belongs to two facets, then we have equality. This generalises a theorem of Varchenko 1982 to non-isolated singularities.

Abstract:We show that the set $\mathcal{T}_{3, \mathrm{sm}}^{\mathrm{can}}$ of smooth threefold canonical thresholds coincides with $\mathcal{T}_{2, \mathrm{sm}}^{\mathrm{lc}}=\mathcal{HT}_{2}$, where $\mathcal{HT}_{2}$ is the $2$-dimensional hypersurface log canonical thresholds characterized by Kuwata \cite{K99a, K99b}. We classify the set $\mathcal{T}_{3}^{\mathrm{can}}$ of threefold canonical thresholds. More precisely, we prove $\mathcal{T}_{3}^{\mathrm{can}}= \{0\} \cup \{\frac{4}{5}\} \cup \mathcal{T}_{3, \mathrm{sm}}^{\mathrm{can}}$.
