Abstract:For a $C^{r}$ $(r>1)$ diffeomorphism on a compact manifold that admits a dominated splitting, this paper establishes the upper semi-continuity of the entropy map. More precisely, given a sequence of invariant measures with only positive Lyapunov exponents along a sub-bundle and non-positive Lyapunov exponents along another sub-bundle, the upper limit of their metric entropies is less than or equal to the entropy of the limiting measure.

Abstract:The main aim of this note is to point out by means of counter-examples that some arguments of the proofs of two theorems about a "half variational principle" for multivalued maps, formulated recently by Vivas and Sirvent [Metric entropy for set-valued maps, Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. Ser. B, 27 (2022), pp. 6589-6604], are false and that our corrected versions require rather restrictive additional assumptions. Nevertheless, we will be able to establish the full variational principle for a special subclass of multivalued lower semicontinuous maps with convex compact values on a compact subset of a Banach space.

Abstract:We prove Malgrange's conjecture on the absence of confluence phenomena for integrable meromorphic connections. More precisely, if $ Y\to X$ is a complex-analytic fibration by smooth curves, $Z$ a hypersurface of $Y$ finite over $X$, and $\nabla$ an integrable meromorphic connection on $Y$ with poles along $Z$, then the function which attaches to {\smit x} $\in X$ the sum of the irregularities of the fiber $\nabla_{(x)}$ at the points of $Z_x$ is lower semicontinuous. The proof relies upon a study of the formal structure of integrable meromorphic connections in several variables.

Abstract:We prove that, for a C 2 non-invertible but non-degenerate map on a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary, an invariant measure satisfies an equality relating entropy, folding entropy and negative Lyapunov exponents. This generalizes Ledrappier-Young’s entropy formula [5] (for negative Lyapunov exponents of diffeomorphisms) to the case of endomorphisms.

Abstract:We study two variations of Bowen's definitions of topological entropy based on separated and spanning sets which can be applied to the study of discontinuous semiflows on compact metric spaces. We prove that these definitions reduce to Bowen's ones in the case of continuous semiflows. As a second result, we prove that our entropies give a lower bound for the $\tau$-entropy defined by Alves, Carvalho and Vásquez (2015). Finally, we prove that for impulsive semiflows satisfying certain regularity condition, there exists a continuous semiflow defined on another compact metric space which is related to the first one by a semiconjugation, and whose topological entropy equals our extended notion of topological entropy by using separated sets for the original semiflow.

Abstract:In the first part of this thesis, we present a general technique for establishing local and uniform continuity bounds for Schur concave functions. Our technique uses a particular relationship between majorization and the trace distance between quantum states. Namely, the majorization pre-order attains a minimum over $\epsilon$-balls in this distance. By tracing the path of the majorization-minimizer as a function of the distance $\epsilon$, we obtain the path of "majorization flow". This yields a new proof of the Audenaert-Fannes continuity bound for the von Neumann entropy in a universal framework which extends to the other functions, including the $\alpha$-Rényi entropy, for which we obtain novel bounds in the case $\alpha > 1$. We apply this technique to other Schur concave functions, such as the number of connected components of a certain random graph model, and the number of distinct realizations of a random variable. In the second part, we consider repeated interaction systems, in which a system of interest interacts with a sequence of probes one at a time. We characterize which repeated interaction systems break any initially-present entanglement between the system and an untouched reference after finitely many steps. Additionally, when the probes and their interactions with the system are slowly-varying (i.e. adiabatic), we analyze the saturation of Landauer's bound, an inequality between the entropy change of the system and the energy change of the probes, in the limit in which the number of steps tends to infinity and both the difference between consecutive probes and the difference between their interactions vanishes. This analysis proceeds at a fine-grained level by means of a two-time measurement protocol, in which the energy of the probes is measured before and after each interaction.

Unifying topological entropy notions for piecewise continuous maps on the interval

Abstract:We generalize the definition of topological entropy given by Adler, Konheim, and McAndrew (AKM) for piecewise continuous self-maps defined on a compact interval (pc-maps). For this notion of entropy, we prove that the properties of the AKM-entropy in the compact-continuous setting get naturally extended, including that it can be estimated using Bowen's formula disregarding the metric used to compute it. Additionally, for piecewise strictly monotonic pc-maps, we prove that the Misiurewicz-Szlenk formula based on the asymptotic behavior of the number of monotony pieces for iterations of the map coincides with our notion of topological entropy. In this way, we unify the notions of entropy commonly used for piecewise continuous interval maps, proving that they all coincide when the space is compact.

Abstract:We study Markov chains with non-negative sectional curvature on finite metric spaces. Neither reversibility, nor the restriction to a particular combinatorial distance are imposed. In this level of generality, we prove that a 1-step contraction in the Wasserstein distance implies a 1-step contraction in relative entropy, by the same amount. Our result substantially strengthens a recent breakthrough of the second author, and has the advantage of being applicable to arbitrary scales. This leads to a time-varying refinement of the standard Modified Log-Sobolev Inequality (MLSI), which allows us to leverage the well-acknowledged fact that curvature improves at large scales. We illustrate this principle with several applications, including birth and death chains, colored exclusion processes, permutation walks, Gibbs samplers for high-temperature spin systems, and attractive zero-range dynamics. In particular, we prove a MLSI with constant equal to the minimal rate increment for the mean-field zero-range process, thereby answering a long-standing question.

Abstract:Expanding Thurston maps were introduced by M. Bonk and D. Meyer with motivation from complex dynamics and Cannon's conjecture from geometric group theory via Sullivan's dictionary. In this paper, we show that the entropy map of an expanding Thurston map is upper semi-continuous if and only if the map has no periodic critical points. For all expanding Thurston maps, even in the presence of periodic critical points, we show that ergodic measures are entropy-dense and establish level-2 large deviation principles for the distribution of Birkhoff averages, periodic points, and iterated preimages. It follows that iterated preimages and periodic points are equidistributed with respect to the unique equilibrium state for an expanding Thurston map and a potential that is Hölder continuous with respect to a visual metric on $S^2$. In particular, our results answer two questions in [Li15]. The main technical tools in this paper are called subsystems of expanding Thurston maps, inspired by a translation of the notion of subgroups via Sullivan's dictionary.

Abstract:Given a bounded sequence of semimartingales on a time interval [0, T ], we find a sequence of convex combinations and a limiting semimartingale Y such that converges to Y in a -localized modification of the Émery topology. More precisely, converges to Y in the Émery topology on an increasing sequence of predictable sets covering . We also prove some technical variants of this theorem, including a version where the complement of forms a disjoint sequence. Applications include a complete characterization of sequences admitting convex combinations converging in the Émery topology and a supermartingale counterpart of Helly's selection theorem.

Abstract:In this article, we develop a novel functional analytic approach and demonstrate its effectiveness in establishing the existence, uniqueness, regularity of disintegration, and statistical properties of equilibrium states associated with a class of discontinuous dynamics. We apply this approach to a group of piecewise partially hyperbolic maps and a set of potentials. Furthermore, we prove several limit theorems, such as exponential decay of correlations, and propose certain conjectures. Additionally, we provide a set of examples where these results can be applied, including discontinuous dynamics semi-conjugated to the Manneville-Pomeau map.

Abstract:In the present paper, we revisit a famous theorem by Candel that we generalize by proving that given a compact lamination by hyperbolic surfaces, every negative function smooth inside the leaves and transversally continuous is the curvature function of a unique laminated metric in the corresponding conformal class. We give an interpretation of this result as a continuity result about the solutions of some elliptic PDEs in the so called Cheeger-Gromov topology on the space of complete pointed riemannian manifolds.

Abstract:Since the celebrated theorem of Lax and Wendroff, we know a necessary condition that any numerical scheme for hyperbolic problem should satisfy: it should be written in flux form. A variant can also be formulated for the entropy. Even though some schemes, as for example those using continuous finite element, do not formally cast into this framework, it is a very convenient one. In this paper, we revisit this, introduce a different notion of local conservation which contains the previous one in one space dimension, and explore its consequences. This gives a more flexible framework that allows to get, systematically, entropy stable schemes, entropy dissipative ones, or accomodate more constraints. In particular, we can show that continuous finite element method can be rewritten in the finite volume framework, and all the quantities involved are explicitly computable. We end by presenting the only counter example we are aware of, i.e a scheme that seems not to be rewritten as a finite volume scheme.

Abstract:We will consider various definitions of topological entropy for multivalued nonautonomous dynamical systems in compact Hausdorff spaces. Some of them can deal with arbitrary multivalued maps, i.e. when no restrictions are imposed on them. For upper semicontinuous multivalued maps, we still investigate especially their relationship to the parametric topological entropy of the induced (possibly discontinuous) dynamical systems in hyperspaces. A comparison of various sorts of definitions can allow us, rather than direct calculations, to make easier the entropy estimates. Several illustrative examples are supplied.
