Abstract:Journal of Topology and Analysis, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we consider Morse theory for perturbed Dirac-harmonic maps into flat tori. We show that Morse homology can be defined for some classes of perturbations, and that it is determined by a homotopy type of the perturbations. We also give an explicit computation of the homology. As an application, we give a lower bound on the number of perturbed Dirac-harmonic maps in a given component for some classes of perturbations.

Abstract:We define and invariant of a three manifold equipped with a flat bundle with vanishing homology. The construction is based on Morse theory using several Morse functions simultaneously and is regarded as a higher loop analogue of various product operations in algebraic topology. There is a heuristic argument that this invariant is related to perturbative Chern-Simons Gauge theory by Axelrod-Singer, etc. There is also a theorem which gives a relation of the construction to open string theory on the cotangent bundle.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop methods for calculating equivariant homology from equivariant Morse functions on a closed manifold with the action of a finite group. We show how to alter $G$-equivariant Morse functions to a stable one, where the descending manifold from a critical point $p$ has the same stabilizer group as $p$, giving a better-behaved cell structure on $M$. For an equivariant, stable Morse function, we show that a generic equivariant metric satisfies the Morse--Smale condition. In the process, we give a proof that a generic equivariant function is Morse, and that equivariant, stable Morse functions form a dense subset in the $C^0$-topology within the space of all equivariant functions. Finally, we give an expository account of equivariant homology and cohomology theories, as well as their interaction with Morse theory. We show that any equivariant Morse function gives a filtration of $M$ that induces a Morse spectral sequence, computing the equivariant homology of $M$ from information about how the stabilizer group of a critical point acts on its tangent space. In the case of a stable Morse function, we show that this can be further reduced to a Morse chain complex.

Abstract:We develop a theory of Morse homology and cohomology with coefficients in a derived local system, for manifolds and also more generally for colimits of spaces that have the homotopy type of manifolds, with a view towards Floer theory. The model that we adopt for derived, or differential graded (DG) local systems is that of DG modules over chains on the based loop space of a manifold. These encompass both classical (non DG) local systems and chains on fibers of Hurewicz fibrations. We prove that the Morse homology and cohomology groups that we construct are isomorphic to DG Tor and Ext functors. The key ingredient in the definition is a notion of twisting cocycle obtained by evaluating into based loops a coherent system of representatives for the fundamental classes of the moduli spaces of Morse trajectories of arbitrary dimensions. From this perspective, our construction sits midway between classical Morse homology with twisted coefficients and more refined invariants of Floer homotopical flavor. The construction of the twisting cocycle is originally due to Barraud and Cornea with Z/2-coefficients. We show that the twisting cocycle with integer coefficients is equivalent to Brown's universal twisting cocycle. We prove that Morse homology with coefficients in chains on the fiber of a Hurewicz fibration recovers the homology of the total space of the fibration. We study several structural properties of the theory: invariance, functoriality, and Poincaré duality, also in the nonorientable case.

Abstract:Let $f:M \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ be a Morse-Bott function on a finite dimensional closed smooth manifold $M$. Choosing an appropriate Riemannian metric on $M$ and Morse-Smale functions $f_j:C_j \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ on the critical submanifolds $C_j$, one can construct a Morse chain complex whose boundary operator is defined by counting cascades \cite{FraTheA}. Similar data, which also includes a parameter $\epsilon > 0$ that scales the Morse-Smale functions $f_j$, can be used to define an explicit perturbation of the Morse-Bott function $f$ to a Morse-Smale function $h_\epsilon:M \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ \cite{AusMor} \cite{BanDyn}. In this paper we show that the Morse-Smale-Witten chain complex of $h_\epsilon$ is the same as the Morse chain complex defined using cascades for any $\epsilon >0$ sufficiently small. That is, the two chain complexes have the same generators, and their boundary operators are the same (up to a choice of sign). Thus, the Morse Homology Theorem implies that the homology of the cascade chain complex of $f:M \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is isomorphic to the singular homology $H_\ast(M;\mathbb{Z})$.

Abstract:By studying spaces of flow graphs in a closed oriented manifold, we construct operations on its cohomology, parametrized by the homology of the moduli spaces of compact Riemann surfaces with boundary marked points. We show that the operations satisfy the gluing axiom of an open homological conformal field theory. This complements previous constructions due to R. Cohen et al., K. Costello and M. Kontsevich and is also the Morse theoretic counterpart to a conjectural construction of operations on the Lagrangian Floer homology of the zero section of a cotangent bundle, obtained by studying uncompactified moduli spaces of higher genus pseudoholomorphic curves.

Generalized Morse Theory for Tubular Neighborhoods

Abstract:We define a notion of Morse function and establish Morse theory-like theorems over offsets of any compact set in a Euclidean space at regular values of their distance function. Using non-smooth analysis and tools from geometric measure theory, we prove that the homotopy type of the sublevels sets of these Morse functions changes at a critical value by gluing exactly one cell around each critical point.

Abstract:Morse theory, which is one of the roots of differential topology, is a method to study topology of manifolds using functions on it. One of its main application is Morse inequality, which gives a relation between Betti number and the number of critical points of Morse function. The original proof (due to Morse) involves something more. That is it gives a way to find a homology group of a manifold using a Morse function. Variants of this idea appeared repeatedly in many important works by Thom, Smale, Milnor, etc. This point again appeared in Witten’s famous paper [W1] and call attentions of many mathematicians. Floer [Fl] (generalizing [CZ]) uses it to built a new infinite dimensional homology theory. There the moduli space of gradient lines played an essential role. One main point in [W1] is to regard Morse theory as a topological field theory. In fact, one may regard it as one dimensional topological field theory or quantum mechanics, while topological σ-model, Gauge field theory etc. are regarded as (topological) quantum field theories. The purpose of this paper is two fold. One is to push forward this point of view and shows that we can regard various operators of algebraic topology as n-point functions. We use several functions for this purpose while in finding homology one use a single Morse function.
Discrete Morse Theory for Khovanov Homology

Abstract:The standard methods for calculating Khovanov homology rely either on long exact/spectral sequences or on the algorithmic "divide and conquer" approach developed by Bar-Natan. In this paper, we employ an alternative and arguably simpler tool, discrete Morse theory, which is new in the context of knot homologies. The method is applied for 2- and 3-torus braids in Bar-Natan's dotted cobordism category, where Khovanov complexes of tangles live. This grants a recursive description of the complexes of 2- and 3-torus braids yielding an inductive result on integral Khovanov homology of links containing those braids. The result, accompanied with some computer data, advances the recent progress on a conjecture by Przytycki and Sazdanović which claims that closures of 3-braids only have 2-torsion in their Khovanov homology.

Abstract:We introduce a version of discrete Morse theory for posets. This theory studies the topology of the order complexes K(X) of h-regular posets X from the critical points of admissible matchings on X. Our approach is related to R. Formanʼs discrete Morse theory for CW-complexes and generalizes Forman and Chariʼs results on the face posets of regular CW-complexes. We also introduce a homological variant of the theory that can be used to study the topology of triangulable homology manifolds by means of their order triangulations.

Abstract:The basic results in Morse theory are the Morse inequalities and the Morse handle body theorem. They are established on the Banach Finsler manifolds or on the Hilbert Riemannian manifolds in Section 4. The tool in this study is the deformation theorem, which is introduced in Section 3. Some preliminaries on algebraic topology and on infinite dimensional manifolds are reviewed in Sections 1 and 2 respectively. Readers who are familiar with the background material may skip over these two sections. Gromoll-Meyer theory on isolated critical points plays an important role in the applications of Morse theory because the nondegeneracy assumption in the handle body theorem might not hold for concrete problems. Section 5 is devoted to introducing Gromoll-Meyer theory systematically and examines the splitting lemma, the homotopy invariance theorem, the shifting theorem, and the Marino Prodi approximation theorem. The rest of the chapter consists of the extensions of the basic results of Morse theory in different directions: in Section 6.1, to the extension to manifolds with boundaries as well as to the functions satisfying certain boundary value conditions, in Section 6.2, to the extension from manifolds to the locally convex closed subsets; and, in Section 7, to functions with symmetry under a compact Lie group action.

Abstract:Morse theory relates algebraic topology invariants and the dynamics of the gradient flow of a Morse function, allowing to derive information about one out of the other. In the case of the homology, the construction extends to much more general settings, and in particular to the infinite dimensional setting of the celebrated Floer homology in symplectic geometry. The case of the fundamental group is quiet different however, and the object of this paper is to provide a dynamical description of the fundamental group in the stable Morse setting, which can be thought of as an intermediate case between the Morse and the Floer settings.

Abstract:A classical result in Morse theory is the determination of the homotopy type of the loop space of a manifold. In this paper, we study this result through the lens of discrete Morse theory. This requires a suitable simplicial model for the loop space. Here, we use Milnor's $\textrm{F}^+\textrm{K}$ construction to model the loop space of the sphere $S^2$, describe a discrete gradient on it, and identify a collection of critical cells. We also compute the action of the boundary operator in the Morse complex on these critical cells, showing that they are potential homology generators. A careful analysis allows us to recover the calculation of the first homology of $\Omega S^2$.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a finite d-valent graph and G an n-dimensional torus. An ``action'' of G on $\Gamma$ is defined by a map, $\alpha$, which assigns to each oriented edge e of $\Gamma$ a one-dimensional representation of G (or, alternatively, a weight, $\alpha_e$, in the weight lattice of G). For the assignment, $e \to \alpha_e$, to be a schematic description of a ``G-action'', these weights have to satisfy certain compatibility conditions: the GKM axioms. We attach to $(\Gamma, \alpha)$ an equivariant cohomology ring, $H_G(\Gamma)=H(\Gamma,\alpha)$. By definition this ring contains the equivariant cohomology ring of a point, $\SS(\fg^*) = H_G(pt)$, as a subring, and in this paper we will use graphical versions of standard Morse theoretical techniques to analyze the structure of $H_G(\Gamma)$ as an $\SS(\fg^*)$-module.

Abstract:We define the geometric complex associated to a Morse-Bott-Smale vector field, cf. [Austin-Braam, 1995], and its associated spectral sequence. We prove an extension of the Bismut-Zhang theorem to Morse-Bott-Smale functions. The proof is based on the Bismut-Zhang theorem for Morse-Smale functions, see [Bismut-Zhang, 1992].

Abstract:We introduce a novel combinatorial method to study $Q^{**}$-transformations of group presentations or, equivalently, 3-deformations of CW-complexes of dimension 2. Our procedure is based on a refinement of discrete Morse theory that gives a Whitehead simple homotopy equivalence from a regular CW-complex to the simplified Morse CW-complex, with an explicit description of the attaching maps and bounds on the dimension of the complexes involved in the deformation. We apply this technique to show that some known potential counterexamples to the Andrews--Curtis conjecture do satisfy the conjecture.

Abstract:On symplectic manifolds, we introduce a Morse-type complex with elements generated by pairs of critical points of a Morse function. The differential of the complex consists of gradient flows and an integration of the symplectic structure over spaces of gradient flow lines. Using the Witten deformation method, we prove that the cohomology of this complex is independent of both the Riemannian metric and the Morse function used to define the complex and is in fact isomorphic to the cohomology of differential forms of Tsai, Tseng and Yau (TTY). We also obtain Morse-type inequalities that bound the dimensions of the TTY cohomologies by the number of Morse critical points and the interaction of symplectic structure with the critical points.

Revisiting the Cohen-Jones-Segal construction in Morse-Bott theory

Abstract:In 1995, Cohen, Jones and Segal proposed a method of upgrading any given Floer homology to a stable homotopy-valued invariant. For a generic pseudo-gradient Morse-Bott flow on a closed smooth manifold $M$, we rigorously construct the conjectural stable normal framings, which are an essential ingredient in their construction, and give a rigorous proof that the resulting stable homotopy type recovers $\Sigma^\infty_+ M$. We further show that one can recover Thom spectra $M^E$ for all reduced $KO$-theory classes $E$ on $M$, by using slightly modified stable normal framings. Our paper also includes a construction of the smooth corner structure on compactified moduli spaces of broken flow lines with free endpoint, a formal construction of Piunikhin-Salamon-Schwarz type continuation maps, and a way to relax the stable normal framing condition to orientability in orthogonal spectra.
