Abstract:In this article, we explore the notion of infinity by studying Cantor's contribution to this field. A brief history of set theory is given. As an example of infinity, we consider Hilbert's famous hotel. A graphical construction is used to demonstrate the countability of rationals. Cantor's diagonal procedure is explored, demonstrating that the infinity of real numbers is greater than that of integers. There is therefore a hierarchy of infinities, enabling us to elaborate on the continuum hypothesis, which remains an unsolved problem in mathematics.

Abstract:By means of the natural history of and with as a theme to broach, we can think metaphysical questions in double senses: The one kind is the epistemological metaphysics, based on the perceptual-rational-differentiate; it is related with the Zero as vacancy between numbers. Another kind is genetic metaphysics, based on the source-evolution-differentiate, it is related with the zero between negative and positive number. In this respect the zero represents a domain of metaphysic: We may infinitely approach it, but never achieve actually. The zero is polymerization-spot of all relations, also the starting-point of all relations, but it self does not have any determinable content. This is the essence of zero, also the essence of all metaphysic.

Abstract:Mathematical conception of infinite quantities forms a cornerstone of many disciplines of modern mathematics --- from differential calculus to set theory. In fact, it could be argued that the most significant revolutions in mathematics in the modern period were always triggered by a development in our understanding of infinity. From the pedagogical point of view, the students' comprehension of the concept of infinity is a competence of interdisciplinary value, helping them to grasp the reasons why and how individual disciplines of modern mathematics were built up. In this paper we present a number of illustrations, examples, and allegories that illuminate and clarify different aspects of infinity. The author has been using and gradually developing these metaphors for infinity in his undergraduate and graduate courses and popular lectures on mathematical logic, set theory, calculus, and nonstandard analysis during the last decade. The aim of this paper is to share the accumulated didactic know-how.
A Generalization of the Cantor-Dedekind Continuum with Nilpotent Infinitesimals

Abstract:We introduce a generalization of the Cantor-Dedekind continuum with explicit infinitesimals. These infinitesimals are used as numbers obeying the same basic rules as the other elements of the generalized continuum, in accordance with Leibniz's original intuition, but with an important difference: their product is null, as the Dutch theologian Bernard Nieuwentijt sustained, against Leibniz's opinion. The starting-point is the concept of shadow, and from it we define indiscernibility (the central concept) and monad. Monads of points have a global-local nature, because in spite of being infinite-dimensional real affine spaces with the same cardinal as the whole generalized continuum, they are closed intervals with length 0. Monads and shadows (initially defined for points) are then extended to any subset of the new continuum, and their study reveals interesting results of preservation in the areas of set theory and topology. All these concepts do not depend on a definition of limit in the new continuum; yet using them we obtain the basic results of the differential calculus. Finally, we give two examples illustrating how the global-local nature of the monad of a real number can be applied to the differential treatment of certain singularities.

Abstract:This text summarizes and expands the content of a general audience talk given in 2018 at the University of Mainz. Motivated by recent developments in dependent type theory and infinity category theory, it presents a history of ideas around the concepts of truth, proof, equality, and equivalence as well as their relation to human thought. We describe a few selected ideas of Platon, Aristoteles, Leibniz, Kant, Frege and others and then pass to the results of Gödel and Tarski about incompleteness, undecidability and truth in deductive systems and their semantic models. The main focus of this text, however, is the development of dependent type theory through the work of Per Martin--Löf and recent developments in homotopy type theory, i.e., the univalent foundations program of Vladimir Voevodsky and others. These theories allow the notion of identity types, which gives new possibilities for handling equality, symmetry, equivalence and isomorphisms in a conceptual way. Martin--Löf type theories have semantic models in (infinity,1)-categories, which are related to simplicial localizations of Quillen model categories. The interaction of type theory with infinity category theory is a new paradigm for a structural view on mathematics which is superior to set theory. It also supports the recent emerging trend for computer assisted proofs in mathematics and verification of algorithms and software in computer science.

Intuitive but Non-Rigorous Explanations of Infinite Numbers

Abstract:The mathematical study of infinity seems to have the ability to transport the mind to lofty and unusual realms. Decades ago, I was transported in this way by Rudy Rucker's book Infinity and the Mind. Despite much subsequent learning and teaching of mathematics in the service of physics and astronomy, there remained quite a few aspects of the "higher infinities" that I was still far from comprehending. Thus, I wanted to dive back in to understand those ideas and to find good ways to explain them to other non-specialists. These notes are an attempt to do this. They begin by discussing huge (but still describable) finite numbers, then they proceed to the concepts of fixed points, Cantor's countably infinite ordinals, transfinite cardinals and the continuum hypothesis, and then to more recent attempts to define still-larger infinities called large cardinals. I should warn the reader that the author is an astrophysicist, so these pedagogic explanations may not be satisfying (or anywhere nearly sufficiently rigorous) to a mathematician. Still, I hope these explanations provide some intuitive insights about concepts that are too large to fit in the physical universe.

Abstract:In this article, we discuss the embodiment of infinity as one of fundamental concepts in mathematics. In contrast to the embodiment of many other mathematical concepts, the embodiment of infinity is an endless dynamic process. In embodying +∞, an object moves rightward toward a previously-set limit and passes it. Then, a new limit is set on the right side of the moving object. The moving object continues its movement and passes it as well. The moving object can pass any limit. In other words, there is no impassable limit for it. In embodying -∞, a similar process happens but the movement is leftward. Embodiment of infinitely small quantities has a basic similarity to the embodiment of infinitely large quantities, although it is different in some respects. We call the embodiment of infinity as iterative embodiment . It is iterative because the process of setting a new limit and passing it is repeated endlessly. Finally, it is suggested that in the process of embodying infinitely large and infinitely small quantities, the visual system and the motor system play important roles, as this process involves spatial concepts and movement.

Abstract:An alternative mathematics based on qualitative plurality of finiteness is developed to make non-standard mathematics independent of infinite set theory. The vague concept "accessibility" is used coherently within finite set theory whose separation axiom is restricted to definite objective conditions. The weak equivalence relations are defined as binary relations with sorites phenomena. Continua are collection with weak equivalence relations called indistinguishability. The points of continua are the proper classes of mutually indistinguishable elements and have identities with sorites paradox. Four continua formed by huge binary words are examined as a new type of continua. Ascoli-Arzela type theorem is given as an example indicating the feasibility of treating function spaces. The real numbers are defined to be the points on the linear continuum and have indefiniteness. Exponentiation is introduced by the Eulerian style and basic properties are established. Basic calculus is developed and the differentiability is captured by the behavior on a point. Main tools of Lebesgue measure theory is obtained in a similar way as Loeb measure. Differences from the current mathematics are examined, such as the indefiniteness of natural numbers, qualitative plurality of finiteness, mathematical usage of vague concepts, the continuum as a primary inexhaustible entity and the hitherto disregarded aspect of "internal measurement" in mathematics.

Some paradoxes of Infinity revisited

Abstract:In this article, some classical paradoxes of infinity such as Galileo's paradox, Hilbert's paradox of the Grand Hotel, Thomson's lamp paradox, and the rectangle paradox of Torricelli are considered. In addition, three paradoxes regarding divergent series and a new paradox dealing with multiplication of elements of an infinite set are also described. It is shown that the surprising counting system of an Amazonian tribe, Pirahã, working with only three numerals (one, two, many) can help us to change our perception of these paradoxes. A recently introduced methodology allowing one to work with finite, infinite, and infinitesimal numbers in a unique computational framework not only theoretically but also numerically is briefly described. This methodology is actively used nowadays in numerous applications in pure and applied mathematics and computer science as well as in teaching. It is shown in the article that this methodology also allows one to consider the paradoxes listed above in a new constructive light.

But, when I've seen that the sine of an infinite in NSA is infinitely near to a real number I was astonished: what is the intuitive meaning of this number, if any? Then, I've seen that to work in SDG I must learn to work in intuitionistic logic ... You know, I love margins of books, and I don't want to loose too much time, I have many things to do ... G.: In SDG they also say that every infinitesimal is at the same time positive and negative, what is the meaning of all these? And why does the square of a first order infinitesimal equal zero, whereas the product of two first order infinitesimals is not necessarily zero? Abstract:I investigate the question whether Gödel's undecidability theorems play a crucial role in the search for a unified theory of physics. I conclude that unless the structure of space-time is fundamentally discrete we can never decide whether a given theory is the final one or not. This is relevant for both canonical quantum gravity and string theory.

Abstract:In this paper, a generalized version of the von Neumann universe known as the total universe is proposed to formally introduce non-well-founded sets that include infinitons, semi-infinitons and quasi-infinitons in Russell's paradox. All three infinitons are part of infinitely generated sets that are generators of non-well-founded sets. The total universe combines the well-founded sets with the non-well-founded ones and turns out to be a model of ZF minus the axiom of regularity, which can be shown invalid in defining the well-founded sets. Also, the total universe is shown to be free of Russell's paradox.

Abstract:Infinitesimals are natural products of the human imagination. Their history goes back to the Greek antiquity. Their role in the calculus and analysis has seen dramatic ups and downs. They have stimulated strong opinions and even vitriol. Edwin Hewitt developed hyperreal fields in the 1940s. Abraham Robinson's infinitesimals date from the 1960s. A noncommutative version of infinitesimals, due to Alain Connes, has been in use since the 1990s. We review some of the hyperreal concepts, and compare them with some of the concepts underlying noncommutative geometry.

Abstract:This paper aims to build a new understanding of the nonstandard mathematical analysis. The main contribution of this paper is the construction of a new set of numbers, $\mathbb{R}^{\mathbb{Z}_< }$, which includes infinities and infinitesimals. The construction of this new set is done naïvely in the sense that it does not require any heavy mathematical machinery, and so it will be much less problematic in a long term. Despite its naïvety character, the set $\mathbb{R}^{\mathbb{Z}_< }$ is still a robust and rewarding set to work in. We further develop some analysis and topological properties of it, where not only we recover most of the basic theories that we have classically, but we also introduce some new enthralling notions in them. The computability issue of this set is also explored. The works presented here can be seen as a contribution to bridge constructive analysis and nonstandard analysis, which has been extensively (and intensively) discussed in the past few years.

Abstract:Alternative set theory was created by the Czech mathematician Petr Vop\v enka in 1979 as an alternative to Cantor's set theory. Vop\v enka criticised Cantor's approach for its loss of correspondence with the real world. Alternative set theory can be partially axiomatised and regarded as a nonstandard theory of natural numbers. However, its intention is much wider. It attempts to retain a correspondence between mathematical notions and phenomena of the natural world. Through infinity, Vop\v enka grasps the phenomena of vagueness. Infinite sets are defined as sets containing proper semisets, i.e. vague parts of sets limited by the horizon. The new interpretation extends the field of applicability of mathematics and simultaneously indicates its limits. This incidentally provides a natural solution to some classic philosophical problems such as the composition of a continuum, Zeno's paradoxes and sorites. Compared to strict finitism and other attempts at a reduction of the infinite to the finite Vop\v enka's theory reverses the process: he models the finite in the infinite.

Some of the known (in the finite-dimensional case) basic properties of the introduced unified entropies have been extended to the case study. Abstract:If the universe is infinite now it has always been infinite. This is the opinion of many astronomers today as can be concluded from the following series of interviews, but the opinions differ much more than I had expected. Many astronomers do not have a clear opinion on this matter. Others have a clear opinion, but very different from the majority. Detailed arguments by two experts on general relativity are also included. Observations show that the universe is flat, i.e. the curvature is zero within the small uncertainty of measurements. This implies an infinite universe, though most probably we will never know that for certain. For comparison with the recent interviews, opinions during the past 2300 years since Aristotle about the universe being finite or infinite have been collected from literature, and it appears that the scientists often had quite definite opinions. \c{opyright} Anita Publications.
