Abstract:To understand the complex flow phenomena over wind turbine blades during stall development, a scaled three-dimensional non-rotating blade model is designed to be dynamically similar to a rotating full-scale NREL 5 MW wind turbine blade. A time-resolved particle image velocimetry (PIV) investigation of flow behavior during the stall cycle examines the processes of stall development and flow reattachment. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and vortex detection techniques are applied to the PIV fields to quantify relevant flow characteristics such as vortex size, separation angle, and separation point throughout a dynamic pitching cycle. The behavior of the POD coefficients provides time scales for the transitional stages which are quantified and compared, revealing that transition from attached flow to full stall is delayed to higher angles of attack and occurs at a higher rate than the transition from full stall to attached flow. The instantaneous flow fields are then reconstructed using the first four POD modes to demonstrate their prominent roles throughout the stall cycle and their ability to capture the general separation behavior over the blade surface.

Analysis of dynamic stall development on a cross-flow turbine blade

Abstract:This research computationally investigates the complex dynamic stall phenomena of a cross-flow turbine blade utilizing modal analysis to identify pertinent events within the cycle. The blade rotation perpendicular to the freestream generates a curved relative flow, a non-sinusoidal variation of relative flow speed and angle of attack, and the necessity of travelling through its own wake. These complexities have challenged traditional predictors of dynamic stall such as pitch rate, pitching moment, or relative angle of attack. To investigate these phenomena, aerodynamic loads and flow fields on the blade from large-eddy simulations are examined across two tip speed ratios. Proper orthogonal decomposition of the velocity fields is employed to analyze the spatio-temporal evolution of the dominant flow features. The modes' time development coefficients reveal a stronger representation of the flow at the higher rotation rate, capturing the trend of relative flow velocity magnitude and lift generation on the blade, along with critical events such as vortex formation and detachment. Additionally, mean power generation is enhanced by 40\% by applying a non-constant rotation rate (intracycle control or angular velocity control). The flow fields, supported by corresponding changes in the modal analysis, demonstrate that a delayed stall behavior is responsible for the additional power extraction. Finally, flow curvature, history effects, and induced flow are identified as significant factors that modify the dynamic stall onset and resulting force and moment curves as compared to non-rotating pitching or plunging foils.

Abstract:Vertical-axis wind turbines are great candidates to diversify wind energy technology, but their aerodynamic complexity limits industrial deployment. To improve the efficiency and lifespan of vertical axis wind turbines, we desire data-driven models and control strategies that take into account the timing and duration of subsequent events in the unsteady flow development. Here, we aim to characterise the chain of events that leads to dynamic stall on a vertical-axis wind turbine blade and to quantify the influence of the turbine operation conditions on the duration of the individual flow development stages. We present time-resolved flow and unsteady load measurements of a wind turbine model undergoing dynamic stall for a wide range of tip-speed ratios. Proper orthogonal decomposition is used to identify dominant flow structures and to distinguish six characteristic stall stages: the attached flow, shear-layer growth, vortex formation, upwind stall, downwind stall, and flow reattachment stage. The timing and duration of the individual stages are best characterised by the non-dimensional convective time. Dynamic stall stages are also identified based on aerodynamic force measurements. Most of the aerodynamic work is done during the shear-layer growth and the vortex formation stage which underlines the importance of managing dynamic stall on vertical-axis wind turbines.

Abstract:Rotor blades of wind turbines in the atmospheric boundary layer regularly experience the aerodynamic phenomenon of dynamic stall consisting of a temporary overshoot of lift and detrimental fatigue loads. Particularly the formation of dynamic stall under three-dimensional inflow conditions raises open questions. Aerodynamic behavior of a DU 91-W2-250 wind profile undergoing light dynamic stall is thus analyzed in a wind tunnel. Effects of a gust with streamwise and spanwise periodic variation are investigated by comparing total and local lift generation with flow formation above the airfoil. The observed stall cycle is divided into five stages of which one reveals lift overshoot of up to $16~\%$. The aerodynamic response of the airfoil shows a delay of about $1/8$ period between evolution of local angle of attack and lift giving a counterclockwise dynamic polar. A proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis of the flow field contributes to understand aerodynamic consequences of the three-dimensional gust. Local inflow, total lift as well as certain lift events are captured by one POD eigenmode, respectively. Obtained results lead to the conclusion that the flow and particularly the stalled wake of an airfoil facing a three-dimensional gust are strongly coupled in the spanwise direction. This yields to flow stabilization, inhibition of stall, and in turn, counterclockwise dynamic polar along with augmented total lift.

Abstract:Dynamic stall on the blades of low-solidity vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) is a major problem due to its adverse effects on performance, drive-train components, and generator sizing. However, when the turbine chord-to-radius ratios are relatively large, greater than approximately 0.5, counterintuitively, dynamic stall can be harnessed to produce useful torque. To examine this seeming contradiction, a wind tunnel study was conducted on a two-bladed, H-rotor test-turbine where the blade chord-to-radius ratio, blade profile (NACA 0012 and NACA 0021), preset angle, strut-blade offset (connection point), and Reynolds number were varied systematically. Large chord-to-radius ratios, between 0.6 and 1.2, and hence high solidities, were selected to ensure that the maximum driving torque was produced by dynamic stall. At low Reynolds numbers (<10 5 ), turbine performance with NACA 0021 blades was vastly superior to that with the thinner NACA 0012 blades, producing approximately 90% greater power and torque coefficients at blade tip-speed ratios between 0.8 and 1.6. This difference was due mainly to the vastly different dynamic stall behavior of the two profiles. The high turbine power coefficients, C P, max >0.3, were obtained with the NACA 0021 blades when the preset angles were close to zero and the strut-blade offset was at the mid-chord location. Tuft-based flow visualization showed that an aft dynamic stall vortex on the NACA 0021 blades precedes the conventional leading-edge vortex, also present on the NACA 0012 blades, resulting in substantially greater post-stall dynamic lift. Nevertheless, NACA 0012 showed a far stronger Reynolds number dependence. In addition, the similarity between preset and offset effects was explained by a new approach to describing the virtual preset angle dependence on the offset point.

Abstract:There are many important aerodynamic phenomena on vertical axis wind turbines. Particularly relevant is flow separation that causes structural fatigue and adversely affects self-starting characteristics of VAWTs at lower wind velocities. Passive flow-control devices on VAWTs rotor blades have been commonly studied to mitigate these adverse characteristics. While there are many studies on this topic, the dynamic stall characteristics of VAWTs rotor blades equipped with Gurney flaps (GFs) and vortex generators (VGs) are not completely clear. It is accordingly the goal of the present study to investigate the aerodynamic performance of the NACA 0021 airfoils in the angle of attack range from 0o to 360o. The experiments were performed in a wind tunnel using rotor blade equipped with VG and GF devices. Experimental results encompass aerodynamic force and moment coefficients of the NACA 0021 airfoil equipped with VGs and GFs. These devices proved to improve the aerodynamic characteristics of the NACA 0021 airfoil and to reduce the adverse effects of flow separation.

Abstract:Vertical axis wind turbine blades are subject to rapid, cyclical variations in angle of attack and relative airspeed which can induce dynamic stall. This phenomenon poses an obstacle to the greater implementation of vertical axis wind turbines because dynamic stall can reduce turbine efficiency and induce structural vibrations and noise. This study seeks to provide a more comprehensive description of dynamic stall in vertical axis wind turbines, with an emphasis on understanding its parametric dependence and scaling behaviour. This problem is of practical relevance to vertical axis wind turbine design but the inherent coupling of the pitching and velocity scales in the blade kinematics makes this problem of more broad fundamental interest as well. Experiments are performed using particle image velocimetry in the vicinity of the blades of a straight-bladed gyromill-type vertical axis wind turbine at blade Reynolds numbers of between 50 000 and 140 000, tip speed ratios between $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}=1$ to $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}=5$ , and dimensionless pitch rates of $0.10\leqslant K_{c}\leqslant 0.20$ . The effect of these factors on the evolution, strength and timing of vortex shedding from the turbine blades is determined. It is found that tip speed ratio alone is insufficient to describe the circulation production and vortex shedding behaviour from vertical axis wind turbine blades, and a scaling incorporating the dimensionless pitch rate is proposed.

Abstract:The aerodynamics of a wind turbine blade at various fixed and dynamically changing angles of attack for laminar and turbulent freestream is investigated by large-eddy simulations. The effects of freestream turbulence on the aerodynamic coefficients are analyzed for dynamic stall conditions being generated by prescribing gusts, i.e., periodically changing incoming velocity fields, onto a ClarkY airfoil at a chord based Reynolds number of Re=150,000. A synthetic turbulence generation (STG) method is extended and applied to produce the turbulent gusts in a time varying mean flow with predefined turbulence statistics, such as mean velocity, Reynolds stress tensor components, and velocity spectra. The length scales in the turbulent freestream are smaller than the blade chord length. The reduced frequency of the incoming laminar and turbulent gusts is kred=0.2 based on the freestream velocity, chord length, and gust frequency. Dynamic stall is analyzed for an angle of attack ranging from 10° to 25°. It is shown how much the freestream turbulence level delays stall and increases lift at high angle of attack. The effect of the turbulence is most evident on the aerodynamic forces during the phase of decreasing angle of attack of the dynamic stall process, in which the reattachment of the boundary layer is enhanced by the freestream turbulence. The negative damping from the moment coefficient is also significantly reduced due to the incoming turbulence. The results show that the freestream turbulence in a turbulent flow at a turbulence level of 5% improves the aerodynamic performance of the wind turbine blade.

The dynamic stall dilemma for vertical-axis wind turbines

Abstract:Vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWT) are excellent candidates to complement traditional wind turbines and increase the total wind energy capacity. Development of VAWT has been hampered by their low efficiency and structural unreliability, which are related to the occurrence of dynamic stall. Dynamic stall consists of the formation, growth, and shedding of large-scale dynamic stall vortices, followed by massive flow separation. The vortex shedding is detrimental to the turbine's efficiency and causes significant load fluctuations that jeopardise the turbine's structural integrity. We present a comprehensive experimental characterisation of dynamic stall on a VAWT blade including time-resolved load and velocity field measurements. Particular attention is dedicated to the dilemma faced by VAWT to either operate at lower tip-speed ratios to maximise their peak aerodynamic performance but experience dynamic stall, or to avoid dynamic stall at the cost of reducing their peak performance. Based on the results, we map turbine operating conditions to one of three regimes: deep stall, light stall, and no stall. The light stall regime offers VAWT the best compromise in the dynamic stall dilemma as it yields positive tangential forces during the upwind and downwind rotation and reduces load transients by 75% compared to the deep stall regime.

Abstract:Considering the dynamic stall effects in engineering calculations is essential for correcting the aerodynamic loads acting on wind turbines, both during power production and stand-still cases, and impacts significantly the turbine aeroelastic stability. The employed dynamic stall model needs to be accurate and robust for a wide range of airfoils and range of angle of attack. The present studies are intended to demonstrate the performance of a recently implemented “IAG dynamic stall” model in a wind turbine design tool Bladed. The model is transformed from the indicial type of formulation into a state-space representation. The new model is validated against measurement data and other dynamic stall models in Bladed for various flow conditions and airfoils. It is demonstrated that the new model is able to reproduce the measured dynamic polar accurately without airfoil specific parameter calibration and has a superior performance compared to the incompressible Beddoes–Leishman model and the Øye model in Bladed.

Abstract:Wind turbines in complex environments could encounter dynamic loads that deviate from design values, while the dynamic stall problem could reduce the reliability and safety of wind turbines. In order to accurately evaluate the aerodynamic characteristics of wind turbine blades, the influence on the dynamic stall characteristics of wind turbine airfoil under complex wind farm environmental factors is studied. The variation law of lift coefficient under different working conditions is obtained, and the pressure coefficient and flow field distribution with times are given. The evolution characteristics of vortex on airfoil surface are analyzed. The results show that when the unsteady effect is significant, the closed-loop area of the blades lift coefficient is gradually larger, and the angle of attack for the maximum lift is proportional to it; when the oscillation angle becomes larger, the upper and lower extreme values of the lift force increase, and the lift curve is more obvious in the shape of the oblique "<span class="InlineEquation">$\infty$</span>." When the blade appears to be in dynamic stall, the lift coefficient increases quickly and has a hysteresis effect. The maximum increase is up to 46.15%, and the hysteresis effect occurs. The instability of the shear layer, the formation and quenching of the trailing edge vortex are the main causes of the hysteresis effect for the blade lift coefficient. Reasonable evaluation of its value is of great significance for wind turbine blade design in complex wind farm environment.

Abstract:In the effect of periodically varying wind speeds, a wind turbine in an external field environment often works under stall conditions. This paper explores the factors that average wind speed, wind speed amplitude, and oscillation frequency resulted in the changes in blade torque by dynamic stall. According to the blade surface flow field during the dynamic change of wind speed, the law of surface pressure change of the blade in the period of periodic stall is analyzed, and the power changes of the wind turbine blade in the stages of no stall, light stall, and deep stall are studied. As a result, as the oscillation frequency increases, the amount of torque change also increases, and the maximum torque also increases. When the average wind speed increases, the torque experienced by the blades decreases stepwise. As the wind speed amplitude increases, the area of the closed-loop curve where the torque varies with the wind speed continues to expand. Accurately understanding the impact of dynamic stalls and stall delays on wind turbines can further improve the efficiency of wind turbines.

Abstract:Unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory S809 airfoil, undergoing sinusoidal pitch oscillations at various reduced frequencies, mean angles of attack, and pitch oscillation amplitudes at Re = 106, are investigated through solutions of two-dimensional Navier—Stokes equations. It is found that there is an encouraging agreement between the computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-predicted aerodynamic force coefficient hysteresis loops and the Ohio State University wind tunnel experimental data, although discrepancies still exist at higher angles of attack and during downstroke pitch motion. The effects of some parameters are studied, and the flow behaviour and dynamic stall vortex development of a typical case are represented in great detail by streamline distribution and pressure coefficient plots. CFD methodology is proved to be promising in predicting airfoil dynamic stall characteristics, and the impact of dynamic stall on the practical operation of wind turbines is analysed. It is necessary to take this into consideration in the prediction of wind turbine performance.

Abstract:A study was conducted to investigate the effects of relative thickness on the static and dynamic characteristics of airfoils. A series of NACA symmetric airfoils with relative thickness ratios ranging from 12% to 30% have undertaken a series of sinusoid pitching motion simulations and these airfoils' Glasgow wind tunnel experiment data were analyzed. It was found that the relative thickness of airfoils would affect the stall onset angle of attack (AOA), the severity of the stall, and the dynamic stall model parameters. As the relative thickness of airfoils increases, static and dynamic stall onset AOA decrease and stall occurs earlier. At the static AOA, the thickest airfoil shows a very large reverse flow region. At the dynamic stall onset AOA, the thinner airfoil exhibits a more obvious burst of the laminar separation bubble. When the relative thickness of the airfoil is smaller, a dynamic stall occurs with more severity. On the one hand, the aerodynamic characteristic curve and suction surface pressure curve of airfoils change are more complicated. And the severity of the dynamic stall was quantitatively compared by extracting the difference of lift coefficients corresponding to the same AOA in the upstroke and downstroke stages. On the other hand, vortex occurrence, convection and shedding on the suction surface of the airfoil are more frequent and complicated. This paper also gives a method to solve the problem of the lack of the dynamic stall model parameters of blades section airfoils when predicting the wind turbine's unsteady force.
Airfoil Dynamic Stall Research of Wind Turbine

Abstract:This paper, based on the reduced version of Beddoes-Leishman dynamic stall model, makes deeply research about airfoil dynamic stall for wind turbines. Considering about the operating environment of wind turbine, the model, constructed in this paper, neglects the compressibility of airflow, and mainly considers attached flow, trailing edge separation and vortex lift. This paper uses fourth-order Runge-Kutta method to solve the differential equations of four state variables, and research the characteristics of dynamic lift coefficients by changing the average angle of attack, reduced frequency and value of time constants. The result shows that when the variable range of angle of attack locates in the region of slightly stall, the maximum of dynamic lift coefficient increases about 53.5%, compared with the maximum of static lift coefficient. And with the reduced frequent k inceasing from 0.05 to 0.15, the reattached angle of attack increases from 4.7° to 12.5°, this indicates increasing the pitch rate can restrain the airflow separation of airfoil surface. And through changing the value of time constants in this model, the maximum of dynamic lift coefficient and dynamic stall angle of attack can be adjusted so that the result of simulation can be more consistent with experimental data.
Investigation on airfoil dynamic stall of horizontal axis wind turbine

Abstract:The dynamic stall has great impact on the operational performance of the horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT). It has been proved by many experiments and analysis that the loading will increase 50-100% at the dynamic stall condition. The study on dynamic stall characteristics for HAWT is based on that for airfoil. The 2-D numerical simulation is employed to study the dynamic stall of the NREL S809 airfoil using the CFD software. The sinuous periodic flow field around the airfoil is presented when the angle of attack changing from 9° to 31°. The difference between the flow field under the dynamic stall condition and that at the static state is obvious, which makes the lift coefficient and drag coefficient varying distinctly. As a result, the output power of HAWT's rotor is increased significantly with dynamic stall. It will bring some unimaginable danger to the running of wind turbine, if dynamic stall is not considered during the design of HAWT.

Abstract:Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies are carried out on a two-bladed vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) operating at a wind speed of 8 m/s for the tip speed ratios ($\lambda$) of 0.50 - 3.0. The blade consists of the NACA 0021 airfoil with the chord length of 0.265 m and a rotor radius of 1 m. Basic sensitivity studies for various time step sizes are carried out. The results are validated against available measurement data from literature. An excellent agreement is obtained for small $\lambda$ up to optimum condition. For the higher tip speed ratios, the two dimensional CFD computations predict higher results than the wind tunnel experiment, but they are very similar to the field measurement data. Wake characteristics are presented in the present studies, showing that the wake becomes Gaussian at 5 times radius downsteam of the rotor. It is shown that complex flow phenomena occur due to dynamic stall onset especially for the smaller tip speed ratio.

Abstract:In this paper, a dynamic stall control scheme for vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) based on pulsed dielectric-barrier-discharge (DBD) plasma actuation is proposed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The trend of the wind turbine power coefficient with the tip speed ratio is verified, and the numerical simulation can describe the typical dynamic stall process of the H-type VAWT. The tangential force coefficient and vorticity contours of the blade are compared, and the regular pattern of the VAWT dynamic stall under different tip speed ratios is obtained. Based on the understanding the dynamic stall phenomenon in flow field, the effect of the azimuth of the plasma actuation on the VAWT power is studied. The results show that the azimuth interval of the dynamic stall is approximately 60° or 80° by the different tip speed ratio. The pulsed plasma actuation can suppress dynamic stall. The actuation is optimally applied for the azimuthal position of 60° to 120°.

Abstract:Dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) technology is used to analyze the control of dynamic stall on a pitching S809 airfoil using an off-surface rod. The unsteady flows around the original and the controlled airfoil are simulated by using the SST k-ω turbulence model. With the introduction of the off-surface rod, the hysteresis effect of the dynamic stall process of the original airfoil is considerably reduced, and the clockwise sub-loop of the pitching moment coefficient is eliminated. The improvement of the dynamic stall process is beneficial to the safe and high-efficiency operations of wind turbine. The coherent structure of the unsteady flow fields are decoupled by the DMD method compiled by an in-house code in MATLAB. Results reveal that the hysteresis effect is dominated by mode 2 with a pitching frequency and mode 3 with twice the pitching frequency. The global energy of the two modes is reduced by the off-surface rod, which alleviates the hysteresis effect for the original airfoil.
Study on Dynamics of Vortices in Dynamic Stall of a Pitching Airfoil Using Lagrangian Coherent Structures

Abstract:The evolution of vortex structure and mass transport process during dynamic stall of the two-dimensional pitching NACA0012 airfoil are studied in detail, using Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs), and the nature of dynamic stall is given from viewpoint of nonlinear dynamics. First, the numerical method with SST k−ω turbulence model is used to simulate the flow field around the pitching oscillation airfoil. Then, the Lagrangian-averaged vorticity deviation (LAVD) method is used to analyze the formation and evolution of vortex structure during dynamic stall. Further, the circulation development process of the primary leading edge vortex (LEV) is studied, with comparison between LAVD method with Q criterion. Finally, the dynamic behaviors, such as the mass transport and evolution of flow structure during the process of dynamic stall, are analyzed in depth by using LCSs, and the fluctuation of lift coefficient and the dynamic stall are investigated from the viewpoint of nonlinear dynamics. The results show that the evolution of vortex structure and mass transport are closely related to the fluctuation of lift coefficient during the dynamic stall, and the low-pressure region formed by vortices and the complex mass transport and mixing process on the suction surface of the airfoil are the main reasons for the high lift during the dynamic stall process. In particular, the primary LEV, which can be accurately identified and tracked by LAVD method, plays a very important role in lift enhancement, and the primary LEV and the secondary LEV form and grow in turn by the intermittent feeding process of shear layer. Additionally, the fluid particles in front of the leading edge of the airfoil enter the LEV through a special mass transport channel, which is textured by LCSs and opened and closed intermittently. More importantly, the saddle point of LCSs is an important component of vortex boundary, and its dynamic behaviors represent the behaviors of vortex. The first separation of saddle point from the shear layer at leading edge indicate the separation of primary LEV from the suction surface of the airfoil, and the occurrence of dynamic stall. The second separation of saddle point from the shear layer at leading edge indicate that primary LEV begins to leave the upper region of the airfoil, corresponding to a sharp drop in lift coefficient. Generally, compared to the traditional visualization techniques, the Lagrangian analysis based on LCSs and LAVD can provide a deeper insight into the dynamics of the vortex in flow field around pitching oscillation airfoil and the dynamic mechanism of dynamic stall.
