Abstract:In this work we consider loop-erased random walk (LERW) and its scaling limit in three dimensions, and prove that 3D LERW parametrized by renormalized length converges to its scaling limit parametrized by some suitable measure with respect to the uniform convergence topology in the lattice size scaling limit. Our result greatly improves the work (Acta Math. 199(1):29-152) of Gady Kozma which establishes the weak convergence of the rescaled trace of 3D LERW towards a random compact set with respect to the Hausdorff distance.

Abstract:We study the capacity of loop-erased random walk (LERW) on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. For $d\geq4$, we prove a strong law of large numbers and give explicit expressions for the limit in terms of the non-intersection probabilities of a simple random walk and a two-sided LERW. Along the way, we show that four-dimensional LERW is ergodic. For $d=3$, we show that the scaling limit of the capacity of LERW is random. We show that the capacity of the first $n$ steps of LERW is of order $n^{1/\beta}$, with $\beta$ the growth exponent of three-dimensional LERW. We express the scaling limit of the capacity of LERW in terms of the capacity of Kozma's scaling limit of LERW.

Abstract:We derive sub-Gaussian bounds for the annealed transition density of the simple random walk on a high-dimensional loop-erased random walk. The walk dimension that appears in these is the exponent governing the space-time scaling of the process with respect to the extrinsic Euclidean distance, which contrasts with the exponent given by the intrinsic graph distance that appears in the corresponding quenched bounds. We prove our main result using novel pointwise Gaussian estimates on the distribution of the high-dimensional loop-erased random walk.

Abstract:In this work, we consider the scaling limit of loop-erased random walk (LERW) in three dimensions and prove that the limiting occupation measure is equivalent to its $\beta$-dimensional Minkowski content, where $\beta \in (1, 5/3]$ is its Hausdorff dimension. In doing this we also establish the existence of the two-point function and provide some sharp estimates on one-point function and ball-hitting probabilities for 3D LERW in any scale, which is a considerable improvement of previous results.

Abstract:We describe a new algorithm, the reflection method, to generate off-lattice random walks of specified, though arbitrarily large, thickness in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and prove that our method is ergodic on the space of thick walks. The data resulting from our implementation of this method is consistent with the scaling of the squared radius of gyration of random walks, with no thickness constraint. Based on this, we use the data to describe the complex relationship between the presence and nature of knotting and size, thickness and shape of the random walk. We extend the current understanding of excluded volume by expanding the range of analysis of how the squared radius of gyration scales with length and thickness. We also examine the profound effect of thickness on knotting in open chains. We will quantify how thickness effects the size of thick open chains, calculating the growth exponent for squared radius of gyration as a function of thickness. We will also show that for radius $r \leq 0.4$, increasing thickness by 0.1 decreases the probability of knot formation by 50% or more.

Abstract:We look at random walks in Dirichlet environment. It was known that in dimension $d\geq 3$, if the walk is sub-ballistic, the displacement of the walk is polynomial of order $\kappa$ for some explicit $\kappa$. We show that the walk, after renormalization, actually converges to a $\kappa$-stable completely asymmetric Levy Process.

Abstract:In this paper we find an upper bound for the probability that a 3 dimensional simple random walk covers each point in a nearest neighbor path connecting 0 and the boundary of an L-1 ball of radius N in Z(d). For d >= 4, it has been shown in [5] that such probability decays exponentially with respect to N. For d = 3, however, the same technique does not apply, and in this paper we obtain a slightly weaker upper bound: for all epsilon > 0, there exists c(epsilon) > 0, P (Trace(P) subset of Trace({X-n}(n=0)(infinity))) <= exp (-c(epsilon) N log(-(1+epsilon))(N)).

Abstract:We consider a generalized version of a directionally reinforced random walk, which was originally introduced by Mauldin, Monticino, and von Weizsäcker in \cite{drw}. Our main result is a stable limit theorem for the position of the random walk in higher dimensions. This extends a result of Horváth and Shao \cite{limits} that was previously obtained in dimension one only (however, in a more stringent functional form).

Abstract:This article investigates the behavior of the continuous-time simple random walk on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d \geq 3$. We derive an asymptotic lower bound on the principal exponential rate of decay for the probability that the average value over a large box of some non-decreasing local function of the field of occupation times of the walk exceeds a given positive value. This bound matches at leading order the corresponding upper bound derived by Sznitman in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1906.05809" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1906.05809">arXiv:1906.05809</a>, and is given in terms of a certain constrained minimum of the Dirichlet energy of functions on $\mathbb{R}^d$ decaying at infinity. Our proof utilizes a version of tilted random walks, a model originally constructed by Li in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1412.3959" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1412.3959">arXiv:1412.3959</a> to derive lower bounds on the probability of the event that the trace of a simple random walk disconnects a macroscopic set from an enclosing box.

Expanderizing Higher Order Random Walks

Abstract:We study a variant of the down-up and up-down walks over an $n$-partite simplicial complex, which we call expanderized higher order random walks -- where the sequence of updated coordinates correspond to the sequence of vertices visited by a random walk over an auxiliary expander graph $H$. When $H$ is the clique, this random walk reduces to the usual down-up walk and when $H$ is the directed cycle, this random walk reduces to the well-known systematic scan Glauber dynamics. We show that whenever the usual higher order random walks satisfy a log-Sobolev inequality or a Poincaré inequality, the expanderized walks satisfy the same inequalities with a loss of quality related to the two-sided expansion of the auxillary graph $H$. Our construction can be thought as a higher order random walk generalization of the derandomized squaring algorithm of Rozenman and Vadhan. We show that when initiated with an expander graph our expanderized random walks have mixing time $O(n \log n)$ for sampling a uniformly random list colorings of a graph $G$ of maximum degree $\Delta = O(1)$ where each vertex has at least $(11/6 - \epsilon) \Delta$ and at most $O(\Delta)$ colors and $O\left( \frac{n \log n}{(1 - \| J\|)^2}\right)$ for sampling the Ising model with a PSD interaction matrix $J \in R^{n \times n}$ satisfying $\| J \| \le 1$ and the external field $h \in R^n$-- here the $O(\bullet)$ notation hides a constant that depends linearly on the largest entry of $h$. As expander graphs can be very sparse, this decreases the amount of randomness required to simulate the down-up walks by a logarithmic factor. We also prove some simple results which enable us to argue about log-Sobolev constants of higher order random walks and provide a simple and self-contained analysis of local-to-global $\Phi$-entropy contraction in simplicial complexes -- giving simpler proofs for many pre-existing results.

Random walks on random walks: non-perturbative results in high dimensions

Abstract:Consider the dynamic environment governed by a Poissonian field of independent particles evolving as simple random walks on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. The random walk on random walks model refers to a particular stochastic process on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ whose evolution at time $t$ depends on the number of such particles at its location. We derive classical limit theorems for this instrumental model of a random walk in a dynamic random environment, applicable in sufficiently high dimensions. More precisely, for $d \geq 5$, we prove a strong law of large numbers and large deviation estimates. Further, for $d\geq 9$, we obtain a functional central limit theorem under the annealed law. These results are non-perturbative in the sense that they hold for any positive density of the Poissonian field. Under the aforementioned assumptions on the dimension they therefore improve on previous work on the model. Moreover, they stand in contrast to the anomalous behaviour predicted in low dimensions.

Abstract:We consider a class of stochastic growth models on the integer lattice which includes various interesting examples such as the number of open paths in oriented percolation and the binary contact path process. Under some mild assumptions, we show that the total mass of the process grows exponentially in time whenever it survives. More precisely, we prove that there exists an open path, oriented in time, along which the mass grows exponentially fast.

Abstract:We establish both the $\limsup$ and the $\liminf$ law of the iterated logarithm (LIL), for the capacity of the range of a simple random walk in any dimension $d\ge 3$. While for $d \ge 4$, the order of growth in $n$ of such LIL at dimension $d$ matches that for the volume of the random walk range in dimension $d-2$, somewhat surprisingly this correspondence breaks down for the capacity of the range at $d=3$. We further establish such LIL for the Brownian capacity of a $3$-dimensional Brownian sample path and novel, sharp moderate deviations bounds for the capacity of the range of a $4$-dimensional simple random walk.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a random walk on the torus of side length $N$ in dimension $d\geq 3$ with uniform starting point, and $t_{\text{cov}}$ be the expected value of its cover time, which is the first time that $X$ has visited every vertex of the torus at least once. For $\alpha > 0$, the set $\mathcal{L}^{\alpha}$ of $\alpha$-late points consists of those points not visited by $X$ at time $\alpha t_{\text{cov}}$. We prove the existence of a value $\alpha_* \in (\frac12,1)$ across which $\mathcal{L}^{\alpha}$ trivialises as follows: for all $\alpha > \alpha_*$ and $\epsilon\geq N^{-c}$ there exists a coupling of $\mathcal{L}^\alpha$ and two occupation sets $\mathcal{B}^{\alpha_\pm}$ of i.i.d. Bernoulli fields having the same density as $\mathcal{L}^{\alpha\pm \epsilon}$, which is asymptotic to $N^{-(\alpha\pm\epsilon)d}$, with the property that the inclusion $ \mathcal{B}^{\alpha_+} \subseteq \mathcal{L}^{\alpha} \subseteq \mathcal{B}^{\alpha_-}$ holds with high probability as $N \to \infty$. The transition at $\alpha_*$ corresponds to the (dis-)appearance of `double-points' (i.e. neighboring pairs of points) in $\mathcal{L}^\alpha$. We further describe the law of $\mathcal{L}^{\alpha}$ for $\alpha>\frac12$ by adding independent patterns to $\mathcal{B}^{\alpha_{\pm}}$. In dimensions $d \geq 4$ these are exactly all two-point sets. When $d=3$ one must also include all connected three-point sets, but no other.

Abstract:Lock step walker model is a one-dimensional integer lattice walker model in discrete time. Suppose that initially there are infinitely many walkers on the non-negative even integer sites. At each tick of time, each walker moves either to its left or to its right with equal probability. The only constraint is that no two walkers can occupy the same site at the same time. It is proved that in the large time limit, a certain conditional probability of the displacement of the leftmost walker is identical to the limiting distribution of the properly scaled largest eigenvalue of a random GOE matrix (GOE Tracy-Widom distribution). The proof is based on the bijection between path configurations and semistandard Young tableaux established recently by Guttmann, Owczarek and Viennot. Statistics of semistandard Young tableaux is analyzed using the Hankel determinant expression for the probability from the work of Rains and the author. The asymptotics of the Hankel determinant is obtained by applying the Deift-Zhou steepest-descent method to the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the related orthogonal polynomials.

Abstract:In the context of order statistics of discrete time random walks (RW), we investigate the statistics of the gap, Gn, and the number of time steps, Ln, between the two highest positions of a Markovian one-dimensional random walker, starting from x0 = 0, after n time steps (taking the x-axis vertical). The jumps ηi = xi −xi − 1 are independent and identically distributed random variables drawn from a symmetric probability distribution function (PDF), f(η), the Fourier transform of which has the small k behavior , with 0 < μ ⩽ 2. For μ = 2, the variance of the jump distribution is finite and the RW (properly scaled) converges to a Brownian motion. For 0 < μ < 2, the RW is a Lévy flight of index μ. We show that the joint PDF of Gn and Ln converges to a well defined stationary bi-variate distribution p(g, l) as the RW duration n goes to infinity. We present a thorough analytical study of the limiting joint distribution p(g, l), as well as of its associated marginals pgap(g) and ptime(l), revealing a rich variety of behaviors depending on the tail of f(η) (from slow decreasing algebraic tail to fast decreasing super-exponential tail). We also address the problem for a random bridge where the RW starts and ends at the origin after n time steps. We show that in the large n limit, the PDF of Gn and Ln converges to the same stationary distribution p(g, l) as in the case of the free-end RW. Finally, we present a numerical check of our analytical predictions. Some of these results were announced in a recent letter (Majumdar et al 2013 Phys. Rev. Lett. 111 070601)

Coexistence, enhancements and short loops in random walk loop soups

Abstract:We consider a general random walk loop soup which includes, or is related to, several models of interest, such as the Spin O(N) model, the double dimer model and the Bose gas. The analysis of this model is challenging because of the presence of spatial interactions between the loops. For this model it is known from Quitmann and Taggi (2022) that macroscopic loops occur in dimension three and higher when the inverse temperature is large enough. Our first result is that, on the $d$ dimensional lattice, the presence of repulsive interactions is responsible for a shift of the critical inverse temperature, which is strictly greater than $\frac{1}{2d}$, the critical value in the non interacting case. Our second result is that a positive density of microscopic loops exists for all values of the inverse temperature. This implies that, in the regime in which macroscopic loops are present, microscopic and macroscopic loops coexist. Moreover, we show that, even though the increase of the inverse temperature leads to an increase of the total loop length, the density of microscopic loops is uniformly bounded from above in the inverse temperature. Our last result is confined to the special case in which the random walk loop soup is the one associated to the Spin O(N) model with arbitrary integer values of $N \geq 2$ and states that, on $\mathbb{Z}^2$, the probability that two vertices are connected by a loop decays at least polynomially fast with their distance.

Abstract:We study the two-point functions of a general class of random-length random walks (RLRWs) on finite boxes in Z d with d ⩾ 3 , and provide precise asymptotics for their behaviour. We show that in a finite box of side length L, the two-point function is asymptotic to the infinite-lattice two-point function when the typical walk length is o ( L 2 ) , but develops a plateau when the typical walk length is Ω ( L 2 ) . We also numerically study walk length moments and limiting distributions of the self-avoiding walk and Ising model on five-dimensional tori, and find that they agree asymptotically with the known results for the self-avoiding walk on the complete graph, both at the critical point and also for a broad class of scaling windows/pseudocritical points. Furthermore, we show that the two-point function of the finite-box RLRW, with walk length chosen via the complete graph self-avoiding walk, agrees numerically with the two-point functions of the self-avoiding walk and Ising model on five-dimensional tori. We conjecture that these observations in five dimensions should also hold in all higher dimensions.
