Abstract:Under an abstract setting, we show that eigenvectors belong to discrete spectra of unitary operators have exponential decay properties. We apply the main theorem to multi-dimensional quantum walks and show that eigenfunctions belong to a discrete spectrum decay exponentially at infinity.

Abstract:Inspired by the covering-space method in path integral on multiply connected spaces, we here present a universal formula of time-evolution kernels for continuous- and discrete-time quantum walks on orbit spaces. In this note, we focus on the case in which walkers' configuration space is the orbit space $\Lambda/\Gamma$, where $\Lambda$ is an arbitrary lattice and $\Gamma$ is a discrete group whose action on $\Lambda$ has no fixed points. We show that the time-evolution kernel on $\Lambda/\Gamma$ can be written as a weighted sum of time-evolution kernels on $\Lambda$, where the summation is over the orbit of initial point in $\Lambda$ and weight factors are given by a one-dimensional unitary representation of $\Gamma$. Focusing on one dimension, we present a number of examples of the formula. We also present universal formulas of resolvent kernels, canonical density matrices, and unitary representations of arbitrary groups in quantum walks on $\Lambda/\Gamma$, all of which are constructed in exactly the same way as for the time-evolution kernel.

Abstract:We consider an operator $P_V=(1+V)P$ on $\ell^2(Z^d)$, where $P$ is the transition operator of a symmetric irreducible random walk, and $V$ is a ``sparse'' potential. We first characterize the essential spectra of this operator. Secondly, we prove that all the eigenfunctions which correspond to discrete spectra decay exponentially fast. Thirdly, we give a sufficient condition for this operator to have an absolute spectral gap at the right edge of the spectra. Finally, as an application of the absolute spectral gap and the exponential decay of the eigenfunctions, we prove a limit theorem for the random walk under the Gibbs measure associated to the potential $V$.

Abstract:In this paper, resonances are introduced to a class of quantum walks on $\mathbb{Z}$. Resonances are defined as poles of the meromorphically extended resolvent of the unitary time evolution operator. In particular, they appear inside the unit circle. Some analogous properties to those of quantum resonances for Schrödinger operators are shown. Especially, the resonance expansion, an analogue of the eigenfunction expansion, indicates the long-time behavior of quantum walks. The decaying rate, the asymptotic probability distribution, and the weak limit of the probability density are described by resonances and associated (generalized) resonant states. The generic simplicity of resonances is also investigated.

Abstract:Focusing on a continuous-time quantum walk on $\mathbb{Z}=\left\{0,\pm 1,\pm 2,\ldots\right\}$, we analyze a probability distribution with which the quantum walker is observed at a position. The walker launches off at a localized state and its system is operated by a spatially periodic Hamiltonian. As a result, we see an asymmetric probability distribution. To catch a long-time behavior, we also try to find a long-time limit theorem and realize that the limit distribution holds a symmetric density function.

Eigenvalues and threshold rezonances of a two-dimensional split-step quantum walk with strong shift

Abstract:In this paper, we derive sufficient conditions for the localization of two-dimensional split-step quantum walks with a strong shift. For this purpose, we analyze the zero points of the function $f$ introduced by Fuda et. al. (Quantum Inf Process 16(8) 203, 2017) and make these zero points explicit. These zeros provide a concrete representation of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the evolution operator, and in particular, clarify where localization occurs. In addition, the eigenvalues obtained here asymptotically approach threshold resonance in special cases. We also describe the display of threshold resonances and generalized eigenfunctions.

Abstract:Quantum walks, mathematical models referred to as the quantum counterparts of random walks, have garnered significant attention in recent years with the advancement of quantum computing. The weak limit theorem for quantum walks, analogous to the central limit theorem for random walks, is one of the most important theorems in this field. In this study, we investigated the weak limit theorem for a two-state discrete-time quantum walk on a two-dimensional square lattice. As a result, we derived a two-dimensional probability distribution whose support is the intersection of two ellipses. The probability distribution we obtained resembles the distribution of one-dimensional quantum walks while possessing a unique form specific to two dimensions.

Quantum Walks can Unitarily Represent Random Walks on Finite Graphs

Abstract:Quantum and random walks have been shown to be equivalent in the following sense: a time-dependent random walk can be constructed such that its vertex distribution at all time instants is identical to the vertex distribution of any discrete-time coined quantum walk on a finite graph. This equivalence establishes a deep connection between the two processes, far stronger than simply considering quantum walks as quantum analogues of classical random walks. The present work strengthens this connection by providing a construction that establishes this equivalence in the reverse direction: a unitary time-dependent quantum walk can be constructed such that its vertex distribution is identical to the vertex distribution of any random walk on a finite graph at all time instants. The construction shown here describes a quantum walk that matches a random walk without measurements at all time steps (an otherwise trivial statement): measurement is performed in a quantum walk that evolved unitarily until a given time $t$ such that its vertex distribution is identical to the random walk at time $t$. The construction procedure is general, covering both homogeneous and non-homogeneous random walks. For homogeneous random walks, unitary evolution implies time dependency for the quantum walk, since homogeneous quantum walks do not converge under arbitrary initial conditions, while a broad class of random walks does. Thus, the absence of convergence demonstrated for quantum walks in its debut comes from both time-homogeneity and unitarity, rather than unitarity alone, and our results shed light on the power of quantum walks to generate samples for arbitrary probability distributions. Finally, the construction here proposed is used to simulate quantum walks that match uniform random walks on the cycle and the torus.

Abstract:Consider a discrete-time quantum walk on the $N$-cycle governed by the following condition: at every time step of the walk, the option persists, with probability $p$, of exercising a projective measurement on the coin degree of freedom. For a bipartite quantum system of this kind, we prove that the von Neumann entropy of the total density operator converges to its maximum value. Thus, when influenced by decoherence, the mutual information between the two subsystems, corresponding respectively to the space of the coin and the space of the walker, eventually must diminish to zero. To put it plainly, any level of decoherence greater than zero forces the system eventually to become completely "disentangled".}

A method of approximation of discrete Schrödinger equation with the normalized Laplacian by discrete-time quantum walk on graphs

Abstract:We propose a class of continuous-time quantum walk models on graphs induced by a certain class of discrete-time quantum walk models with the parameter $\epsilon\in [0,1]$. Here the graph treated in this paper can be applied both finite and infinite cases. The induced continuous-time quantum walk is an extended version of the (free) discrete-Schrödinger equation driven by the normalized Laplacian: the element of the weighted Hermitian takes not only a scalar value but also a matrix value depending on the underlying discrete-time quantum walk. We show that each discrete-time quantum walk with an appropriate setting of the parameter $\epsilon$ in the long time limit identifies with its induced continuous-time quantum walk and give the running time for the discrete-time to approximate the induced continuous-time quantum walk with a small error $\delta$. We also investigate the detailed spectral information on the induced continuous-time quantum walk.

Abstract:We analyze the quantum walk in higher spatial dimensions and compare classical and quantum spreading as a function of time. Tensor products of Hadamard transformations and the discrete Fourier transform arise as natural extensions of the quantum coin toss in the one-dimensional walk simulation, and other illustrative transformations are also investigated. We find that entanglement between the dimensions serves to reduce the rate of spread of the quantum walk. The classical limit is obtained by introducing a random phase variable.

Abstract:A quantum walk is the quantum analogue of a random walk. While it is relatively well understood how quantum walks can speed up random walk hitting times, it is a long-standing open question to what extent quantum walks can speed up the spreading or mixing rate of random walks on graphs. In this expository paper, inspired by a blog post by Terence Tao, we describe a particular perspective on this question that derives quantum walks from the discrete wave equation on graphs. This yields a description of the quantum walk dynamics as simply applying a Chebyshev polynomial to the random walk transition matrix. This perspective decouples the problem from its quantum origin, and highlights connections to earlier (non-quantum) work and the use of Chebyshev polynomials in random walk theory as in the Varopoulos-Carne bound. We illustrate the approach by proving a weak limit of the quantum walk dynamics on the lattice. This gives a different proof of the quadratically improved spreading behavior of quantum walks on lattices.

Non-uniform Mixing of Quantum Walks on the Symmetric Group

Abstract:It is well-known that classical random walks on regular graphs converge to the uniform distribution. Quantum walks, in their various forms, are quantizations of their corresponding classical random walk processes. Gerhardt and Watrous (2003) demonstrated that continuous-time quantum walks do not converge to the uniform distribution on certain Cayley graphs of the Symmetric group, which by definition are all regular. In this paper, we demonstrate that discrete-time quantum walks, in the sense of quantized Markov chains as introduced by Szegedy (2004), also do not converge to the uniform distribution. We analyze the spectra of the Szegedy walk operators using the representation theory of the symmetric group. In the discrete setting, the analysis is complicated by the fact that we work within a Hilbert space of a higher dimension than the continuous case, spanned by pairs of vertices. Our techniques are general, and we believe they can be applied to derive similar analytical results for other non-commutative groups using the characters of their irreducible representation.

Absolute zeta functions and periodicity of quantum walks on cycles

Abstract:The quantum walk is a quantum counterpart of the classical random walk. On the other hand, absolute zeta functions can be considered as zeta functions over $\mathbb{F}_1$. This study presents a connection between quantum walks and absolute zeta functions. In this paper, we focus on Hadamard walks and $3$-state Grover walks on cycle graphs. The Hadamard walks and the Grover walks are typical models of the quantum walks. We consider the periods and zeta functions of such quantum walks. Moreover, we derive the explicit forms of the absolute zeta functions of corresponding zeta functions. Also, it is shown that our zeta functions of quantum walks are absolute automorphic forms.

Abstract:We discuss spreading estimates for dynamical systems given by the iteration of an extended CMV matrix. Using a connection due to Cantero--Grünbaum--Moral--Velázquez, this enables us to study spreading rates for quantum walks in one spatial dimension. We prove several general results which establish quantitative upper and lower bounds on the spreading of a quantum walk in terms of estimates on a pair of associated matrix cocycles. To demonstrate the power and utility of these methods, we apply them to several concrete cases of interest. In the case where the coins are distributed according to an element of the Fibonacci subshift, we are able to rather completely describe the dynamics in a particular asymptotic regime. As a pleasant consequence, this supplies the first concrete example of a quantum walk with anomalous transport, to the best of our knowldege. We also prove ballistic transport for a quantum walk whose coins are periodically distributed.

Abstract:We introduce the quantum Levy walk to study transport and decoherence in a quantum random model. We have derived from second order perturbation theory the quantum master equation for a \textit{Levy-like particle}that moves along a lattice through hopping scale-free while interacting with a thermal bath of oscillators. The general evolution of the quantum Levy particle has been solved for different preparations of the system. We examine the evolution of the quantum purity, the localized correlation, and the probability to be in a lattice site, all them leading to important conclusions concerning quantum irreversibility and decoherence features. We prove that the quantum thermal mean-square displacement is finite under a constraint that is different when compared to the classical Weierstrass random walk. We prove that when the mean-square displacement is infinite the density of state has a complex null-set inside the Brillouin zone. We show the existence of a critical behavior in the continuous eigenenergy which is related to its non-differentiability and self-affine characteristics. In general our approach allows to study analytically quantum fluctuations and decoherence in a long-range hopping model.

On the relation between quantum walks and absolute zeta functions

Abstract:The quantum walk is a quantum counterpart of the classical random walk. On the other hand, the absolute zeta function can be considered as a zeta function over F_1. This paper presents a connection between the quantum walk and the absolute zeta function. First we deal with a zeta function determined by a time evolution matrix of the Grover walk on a graph. The Grover walk is a typical model of the quantum walk. Then we prove that the zeta function given by the quantum walk is an absolute automorphic form of weight depending on the number of edges of the graph. Furthermore we consider an absolute zeta function for the zeta function based on a quantum walk. As an example, we compute an absolute zeta function for the cycle graph and show that it is expressed as the multiple gamma function of order 2.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the properties of lackadaisical quantum walks (LQWs) on a line. This model was first proposed in Wong (2015 J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 48 435304) as a quantum analogue of lazy random walks where each vertex is attached to tau self-loops. We derive an analytic expression for the localization probability of the walker at the origin after infinite steps, and obtain the peak velocities of the walker. We also calculate the wave function of the walker starting from the origin and obtain a long-time approximation for the entire probability density function. As an application of the density function, we prove that lackadaisical quantum walks spread ballistically for arbitrary tau, and give an analytic solution for the variance of the walker's probability distribution.

Abstract:We consider to what extent quantum walks can constitute models of thermalization, analogously to how classical random walks can be models for classical thermalization. In a quantum walk over a graph, a walker moves in a superposition of node positions via a unitary time evolution. We show a quantum walk can be interpreted as an equilibration of a kind investigated in the literature on thermalization in unitarily evolving quantum systems. This connection implies that recent results concerning the equilibration of observables can be applied to analyse the node position statistics of quantum walks. We illustrate this in the case of a family of graphs known as fullerenes. We find that a bound from Short et al., implying that certain expectation values will at most times be close to their time-averaged value, applies tightly to the node position probabilities. Nevertheless, the node position statistics do not thermalize in the standard sense. In particular, quantum walks over fullerene graphs constitute a counter-example to the hypothesis that subsystems equilibrate to the Gibbs state. We also exploit the bridge created to show how quantum walks can be used to probe the universality of the eigenstate thermalisation hypothesis (ETH) relation. We find that whilst in C60 with a single walker, the ETH relation does not hold for node position projectors, it does hold for the average position, enforced by a symmetry of the Hamiltonian. The findings suggest a unified study of quantum walks and quantum self-thermalizations is natural and feasible.

Abstract:We prove that the Weyl function of the one-dimensional Dirac operator on the half-line with exponentially decaying entropy extends meromorphically into the horizontal strip for some depending on the rate of decay. If the entropy decreases very rapidly then the corresponding Weyl function turns out to be meromorphic in the whole complex plane. In this situation we show that poles of the Weyl function (scattering resonances) uniquely determine the operator.
