Abstract:Despite recent advances in automating theorem proving in full first-order theories, inductive reasoning still poses a serious challenge to state-of-the-art theorem provers. The reason for that is that in first-order logic induction requires an infinite number of axioms, which is not a feasible input to a computer-aided theorem prover requiring a finite input. Mathematical practice is to specify these infinite sets of axioms as axiom schemes. Unfortunately these schematic definitions cannot be formalized in first-order logic, and therefore not supported as inputs for first-order theorem provers. In this work we introduce a new method, inspired by the field of axiomatic theories of truth, that allows to express schematic inductive definitions, in the standard syntax of multi-sorted first-order logic. Further we test the practical feasibility of the method with state-of-the-art theorem provers, comparing it to solvers' native techniques for handling induction.

Abstract:In this short position paper we briefly review the development history of automated inductive theorem proving and computer-assisted mathematical induction. We think that the current low expectations on progress in this field result from a faulty narrow-scope historical projection. Our main motivation is to explain--on an abstract but hopefully sufficiently descriptive level--why we believe that future progress in the field is to result from human-orientedness and descente infinie.

Abstract:Inductive theorem proving is an important long-standing challenge in computer science. In this extended abstract, we first summarize the recent developments of proof by induction for Isabelle/HOL. Then, we propose united reasoning, a novel approach to further automating inductive theorem proving. Upon success, united reasoning takes the best of three schools of reasoning: deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning, and inductive reasoning, to prove difficult inductive problems automatically.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus">A shallow semantical embedding of free logic in classical higher-order logic is presented, which enables the off-the-shelf application of higher-order interactive and automated theorem provers for the formalisation and verification of free logic theories. Subsequently, this approach is applied to a selected domain of mathematics: starting from a generalization of the standard axioms for a monoid we present a stepwise development of various, mutually equivalent foundational axiom systems for category theory. As a side-effect of this work some (minor) issues in a prominent category theory textbook have been revealed. The purpose of this article is not to claim any novel results in category theory, but to demonstrate an elegant way to “implement” and utilize interactive and automated reasoning in free logic, and to present illustrative experiments.</p>

Abstract:Induction in saturation-based first-order theorem proving is a new exciting direction in the automation of inductive reasoning. In this paper we survey our work on integrating induction directly into the saturation-based proof search framework of first-order theorem proving. We describe our induction inference rules proving properties with inductively defined datatypes and integers. We also present additional reasoning heuristics for strengthening inductive reasoning, as well as for using induction hypotheses and recursive function definitions for guiding induction. We present exhaustive experimental results demonstrating the practical impact of our approach as implemented within Vampire.

Abstract:We propose a procedure for automated implicit inductive theorem proving for equational specifications made of rewrite rules with conditions and constraints. The constraints are interpreted over constructor terms (representing data values), and may express syntactic equality, disequality, ordering and also membership in a fixed tree language. Constrained equational axioms between constructor terms are supported and can be used in order to specify complex data structures like sets, sorted lists, trees, powerlists... Our procedure is based on tree grammars with constraints, a formalism which can describe exactly the initial model of the given specification (when it is sufficiently complete and terminating). They are used in the inductive proofs first as an induction scheme for the generation of subgoals at induction steps, second for checking validity and redundancy criteria by reduction to an emptiness problem, and third for defining and solving membership constraints. We show that the procedure is sound and refutationally complete. It generalizes former test set induction techniques and yields natural proofs for several non-trivial examples presented in the paper, these examples are difficult to specify and carry on automatically with related induction procedures.

Abstract:This paper makes a contribution to the calculational paradigm of program development, a paradigm in which programs are calculated from their specifications by applying meaning preserving transformations. It introduces program induction, a technique analogous to mathematical induction, and iteration folding, a refinement rule. Using program induction, a specification is decomposed into a base case and an inductive case and their solutions are sequentially composed to derive the final program. The iteration folding rule is applied to transform potentially infinite nested if statements into a while statement. Our technique and rule augment the existing repertoire of techniques and rules in the calculus of program refinement.

Abstract:Induction-the ability to generalize from existing knowledge-is the cornerstone of intelligence. Cognitive models of human induction are largely limited to toy problems and cannot make quantitative predictions for the thousands of different induction arguments that have been studied by researchers, or to the countless induction arguments that could be encountered in everyday life. Leading large language models (LLMs) go beyond toy problems but fail to mimic observed patterns of human induction. In this article, we combine rich knowledge representations obtained from LLMs with theories of human inductive reasoning developed by cognitive psychologists. We show that this integrative approach can capture several benchmark empirical findings on human induction and generate human-like responses to natural language arguments with thousands of common categories and properties. These findings shed light on the cognitive mechanisms at play in human induction and show how existing theories in psychology and cognitive science can be integrated with new methods in artificial intelligence, to successfully model high-level human cognition. Abstract:We report on several scenarios of using automated theorem proving software in university education. In particular, we focus on using the Theorema system in a software-enhanced logic-course for students in computer science or artificial intelligence. The purpose of using logic-software in our teaching is not to teach students the proper use of a particular piece of software. In contrast, we try to employ certain software in order to spark students' motivation and to support their understanding of logic principles they are supposed to understand after having passed the course. In a sense, we try to let the software act as a logic-tutor, the software is not an additional subject we teach.

Abstract:The material presented in this paper contributes to establishing a basis deemed essential for substantial progress in Automated Deduction. It identifies and studies global features in selected problems and their proofs which offer the potential of guiding proof search in a more direct way. The studied problems are of the wide-spread form of "axiom(s) and rule(s) imply goal(s)". The features include the well-known concept of lemmas. For their elaboration both human and automated proofs of selected theorems are taken into a close comparative consideration. The study at the same time accounts for a coherent and comprehensive formal reconstruction of historical work by {\L}ukasiewicz, Meredith and others. First experiments resulting from the study indicate novel ways of lemma generation to supplement automated first-order provers of various families, strengthening in particular their ability to find short proofs.

Abstract:Well-known principles of induction include monotone induction and different sorts of non-monotone induction such as inflationary induction, induction over well-founded sets and iterated induction. In this work, we define a logic formalizing induction over well-founded sets and monotone and iterated induction. Just as the principle of positive induction has been formalized in FO(LFP), and the principle of inflationary induction has been formalized in FO(IFP), this paper formalizes the principle of iterated induction in a new logic for Non-Monotone Inductive Definitions (ID-logic). The semantics of the logic is strongly influenced by the well-founded semantics of logic programming. Our main result concerns the modularity properties of inductive definitions in ID-logic. Specifically, we formulate conditions under which a simultaneous definition $\D$ of several relations is logically equivalent to a conjunction of smaller definitions $\D_1 \land ... \land \D_n$ with disjoint sets of defined predicates. The difficulty of the result comes from the fact that predicates $P_i$ and $P_j$ defined in $\D_i$ and $\D_j$, respectively, may be mutually connected by simultaneous induction. Since logic programming and abductive logic programming under well-founded semantics are proper fragments of our logic, our modularity results are applicable there as well.

Abstract:Computational logic is the use of computers to establish facts in a logical formalism. Originating in nineteenth century attempts to understand the nature of mathematical reasoning, the subject now comprises a wide variety of formalisms, techniques and technologies. One strand of work follows the ‘logic for computable functions (LCF) approach’ pioneered by Robin Milner, where proofs can be constructed interactively or with the help of users’ code (which does not compromise correctness). A refinement of LCF, called Isabelle, retains these advantages while providing flexibility in the choice of logical formalism and much stronger automation. The main application of these techniques has been to prove the correctness of hardware and software systems, but increasingly researchers have been applying them to mathematics itself.

Abstract:We prove soundness of an optimized realizability interpretation for a logic supporting strictly positive induction and coinduction. The optimization concerns the special treatment of Harrop formulas which yields simpler extracted programs. We show that wellfounded induction is an instance of strictly positive induction and derive from this a new computationally meaningful formulation of the Archimedean property for real numbers. We give an example of program extraction in computable analysis and show that Archimedean induction can be used to eliminate countable choice.

Scientific breakthroughs and technological advances have been made in the last three decades, which allows us now to automate the process (almost) fully on modern computing devices. Abstract:Proof by induction plays a critical role in formal verification and mathematics at large. However, its automation remains as one of the long-standing challenges in Computer Science. To address this problem, we developed sem_ind. Given inductive problem, sem_ind recommends what arguments to pass to the induct method. To improve the accuracy of sem_ind, we introduced definitional quantifiers, a new kind of quantifiers that allow us to investigate not only the syntactic structures of inductive problems but also the definitions of relevant constants in a domain-agnostic style. Our evaluation shows that compared to its predecessor sem_ind improves the accuracy of recommendation from 20.1% to 38.2% for the most promising candidates within 5.0 seconds of timeout while decreasing the median value of execution time from 2.79 seconds to 1.06 seconds.

Abstract:We introduce and elaborate a novel formalism for the manipulation and analysis of proofs as objects in a global manner. In this first approach the formalism is restricted to first-order problems characterized by condensed detachment. It is applied in an exemplary manner to a coherent and comprehensive formal reconstruction and analysis of historical proofs of a widely-studied problem due to Łukasiewicz. The underlying approach opens the door towards new systematic ways of generating lemmas in the course of proof search to the effects of reducing the search effort and finding shorter proofs. Among the numerous reported experiments along this line, a proof of Łukasiewicz 's problem was automatically discovered that is much shorter than any proof found before by man or machine.
