Abstract:Data released by the Planck Collaboration in 2015 imply new dates for the era of radiation, the era of matter, and the era of dark energy. The era of radiation ended, and the era of matter began, when the density of radiation dropped below that of matter. This happened 50,953 \pm 2236 years after the time of infinite redshift when the ratio a(t)/a_0 of scale factors was (2.9332 \pm 0.0711) x 10^{-4}. The era of matter ended, and the era of dark energy began, when the density of matter dropped below that of dark energy (assumed constant). This happened 10.1928 \pm 0.0375 Gyr after the time of infinite redshift when the scale-factor ratio was 0.7646 \pm 0.0168. The era of dark energy started 3.606 billion years ago. In this pedagogical paper, five figures trace the evolution of the densities of radiation and matter, the scale factor, and the redshift through the eras of radiation, matter, and dark energy.

Abstract:The standard cosmological model is sufficiently well constrained that precise estimates can be provided for the redshift of various physically defined times in the chronology of the Universe. For example, it is well known that matter-radiation equality, recombination and reionisation happen at redshifts of around 3000, 1000 and 10, respectively, and these can be specified more precisely by fitting to data. What is less well known are the times in years (and their uncertainties) for these and other epochs in the history of the Universe. Here we provide precise time determinations for six epochs in cosmological history within the standard model, using data from the Planck satellite. Our main results are illustrated in a figure.

New Globular Cluster Age Estimates and Constraints on the Cosmic Equation of State and The Matter Density of the Universe

Abstract:New estimates of globular cluster distances, combined with revised ranges for input parameters in stellar evolution codes and recent estimates of the earliest redshift of cluster formation allow us to derive a new 95% confidence level lower limit on the age of the Universe of 11 Gyr. This is now definitively inconsistent with the expansion age for a flat Universe for the currently allowed range of the Hubble constant unless the cosmic equation of state is dominated by a component that violates the strong energy condition. This solidifies the case for a dark energy-dominated universe, complementing supernova data and direct measurements of the geometry and matter density in the Universe. The best-fit age is consistent with a cosmological constant-dominated (w=pressure/energy density = -1) universe. For the Hubble Key project best fit value of the Hubble Constant our age limits yields the constraints w < -0.4 and Omega_matter < 0.38 at the 68 % confidence level, and w < -0.26 and Omega_matter < 0.58 at the 95 % confidence level.

Abstract:Due to the quasi-exponential red-shifting which occurs during an inflationary period in the very early Universe, wavelengths which at the present time correspond to cosmological lengths are in general sub-Planckian during the early stages of inflation. This talk discusses two approaches to addressing this issue which both indicate that the standard predictions of inflationary cosmology - made using classical general relativity and weakly coupled scalar matter field theory - are not robust against changes in the physics on trans-Planckian scales. One approach makes use of modified dispersion relations for a usual free field scalar matter theory, the other uses some properties of space-time non-commutativity - a feature expected in string theory. Thus, it is possible that cosmological observations may be used as a window to explore trans-Planckian physics. We also speculate on a novel way of obtaining inflation based on modified dispersion relations for ordinary radiation.

Abstract:Space-based missions studying the cosmic microwave background (CMB) have progressively refined the parameter space in conventional models of inflation shortly (∼10 −37 s) after the Big Bang. While most inflationary scenarios proposed thus far in the context of general relativity have since been ruled out, the basic idea of inflation may still be tenable, albeit with several unresolved conundrums, such as conflicting initial conditions and inconsistencies with the measured CMB power spectrum. In the new slow-roll inflationary picture, inflation arising in plateau-like potentials requires an initiation beyond the Planck time. This delay may be consistent with the cutoff, k min , measured recently in the primordial power spectrum. However, the actual value of k min would imply an initiation time too far beyond the Big Bang for inflation to solve the horizon problem. In this paper, we also describe several other undesirable consequences of this delay, including an absence of well-motivated initial conditions and a significant difficulty in providing a viable mechanism for properly quantizing the primordial fluctuations. Nevertheless, many of these inconsistencies may still be avoided if one introduces nonconventional modifications to inflation, such as a brief departure from slow-roll dynamics, possibly due to a dramatic change in the inflationary potential, inflation driven by multiple fields, or a nonminimal coupling to gravity. In addition, some of these difficulties could be mitigated via the use of alternative cosmologies based, e.g., on loop quantum gravity, which replaces the initial Big Bang singularity with finite conditions at a bounce-like beginning.

Abstract: The European Space Agency's Planck satellite, which was dedicated to studying the early Universe and its subsequent evolution, was launched on 14 May 2009. It scanned the microwave and submillimetre sky continuously between 12 August 2009 and 23 October 2013, producing deep, high-resolution, all-sky maps in nine frequency bands from 30 to 857GHz. This paper presents the cosmological legacy of Planck, which currently provides our strongest constraints on the parameters of the standard cosmological model and some of the tightest limits available on deviations from that model. The 6-parameter LCDM model continues to provide an excellent fit to the cosmic microwave background data at high and low redshift, describing the cosmological information in over a billion map pixels with just six parameters. With 18 peaks in the temperature and polarization angular power spectra constrained well, Planck measures five of the six parameters to better than 1% (simultaneously), with the best-determined parameter (theta_*) now known to 0.03%. We describe the multi-component sky as seen by Planck, the success of the LCDM model, and the connection to lower-redshift probes of structure formation. We also give a comprehensive summary of the major changes introduced in this 2018 release. The Planck data, alone and in combination with other probes, provide stringent constraints on our models of the early Universe and the large-scale structure within which all astrophysical objects form and evolve. We discuss some lessons learned from the Planck mission, and highlight areas ripe for further experimental advances.

D 92 (2015) 103004}, simple analytical solutions of the Friedman equations were obtained for a universe having stiff matter component in the early universe together with a dark matter, and a dark energy component. In this analysis, the universe is considered to be made of a dark fluid which behaves as a stiff matter in the early phase of the universe (when the internal energy dominates). It is also more logical to consider quantum gravitational effects in the early phase of the cosmological evolution. In this analysis, following \href{<a class="link-external link-https" href="https://link.aps.org/doi/10.1103/PhysRevD.65.043508" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>}{Phys. Rev. D 65 (2002) 043508}, we consider renormalization group improved modified Friedmann equations where the Newton's gravitational constant ($G$) and the cosmological constant ($\Lambda$) flows with the momentum scale $k$ of the universe. It is observed that for a universe undergoing a stiff matter era, radiation era, and matter era, inflation is absent in the early time regime of the universe when the flow of the Newton's gravitational constant and cosmological constant is under consideration. Using the identification of the momentum scale with the scale factor of the universe, we then explore the era $t>t_{\text{Pl}}$ which indicates a primarily matter dominated era with accelerated expansion due to the presence of dark energy. Finally, considering the total equation of state as a combination of linear equation of state along with a polytropic equation of state, we observe that after the Planck-time the universe can undergo an inflationary phase and we find out that the inflation is enhanced by quantum gravitational effects arising due to the consideration of renormalization group approach to quantum gravity.

Abstract:Boomerang, Maxima, DASI, CBI and VSA significantly increase the case for accelerated expansion in the early universe (the inflationary paradigm) and at the current epoch (dark energy dominance), especially when combined with data on high redshift supernovae (SN1) and large scale structure (LSS). There are ``7 pillars of Inflation'' that can be shown with the CMB probe, and at least 5, and possibly 6, of these have already been demonstrated in the CMB data: (1) a large scale gravitational potential; (2) acoustic peaks/dips; (3) damping due to shear viscosity; (4) a Gaussian (maximally random) distribution; (5) secondary anisotropies; (6) polarization. A 7th pillar, anisotropies induced by gravity wave quantum noise, could be too small. A minimal inflation parameter set, \omega_b,\omega_{cdm}, \Omega_{tot}, \Omega_Q,w_Q,n_s,\tau_C, \sigma_8}, is used to illustrate the power of the current data. We find the CMB+LSS+SN1 data give \Omega_{tot} =1.00^{+.07}_{-.03}, consistent with (non-baroque) inflation theory. Restricting to \Omega_{tot}=1, we find a nearly scale invariant spectrum, n_s =0.97^{+.08}_{-.05}. The CDM density, \Omega_{cdm}{\rm h}^2 =.12^{+.01}_{-.01}, and baryon density, \Omega_b {\rm h}^2 = >.022^{+.003}_{-.002}, are in the expected range. (The Big Bang nucleosynthesis estimate is 0.019\pm 0.002.) Substantial dark (unclustered) energy is inferred, \Omega_Q \approx 0.68 \pm 0.05, and CMB+LSS \Omega_Q values are compatible with the independent SN1 estimates. The dark energy equation of state, crudely parameterized by a quintessence-field pressure-to-density ratio w_Q, is not well determined by CMB+LSS (w_Q < -0.4 at 95% CL), but when combined with SN1 the resulting w_Q < -0.7 limit is quite consistent with the w_Q=-1 cosmological constant case.

Abstract:The results from Planck2015, when combined with earlier observations from WMAP, ACT, SPT and other experiments, were the first observations to disfavor the "classic" inflationary paradigm. To satisfy the observational constraints, inflationary theorists have been forced to consider plateau-like inflaton potentials that introduce more parameters and more fine-tuning, problematic initial conditions, multiverse-unpredictability issues, and a new 'unlikeliness problem.' Some propose turning instead to a "postmodern" inflationary paradigm in which the cosmological properties in our observable universe are only locally valid and set randomly, with completely different properties (and perhaps even different physical laws) existing in most regions outside our horizon. By contrast, the new results are consistent with the simplest versions of ekpyrotic cyclic models in which the universe is smoothed and flattened during a period of slow contraction followed by a bounce, and another promising bouncing theory, anamorphic cosmology, has been proposed that can produce distinctive predictions.

Inflation and cosmological evolution with $F(R,G)$ gravity theory

Abstract:In the last decade Planck PR4 data together with ground-based experimental data such as, BK18, BAO and CMB lensing, tightened constraint of the tensor to scalar ratio, starting form $r < 0.14$ to $r < 0.032$, while the spectral index lies within the range $0.9631 < n_s < 0.9705$. Viability of modified gravity theories, proposed as alternatives to the dark-energy issue, should therefore be tested in the light of such new result. Here, we explore $F(R,G)$ gravity theory in regard of the early universe and have shown that, it is not compatible with newly released constraints on $r$ and $n_s$ simultaneously. Further, it also fails to produce a feasible radiation dominated era. It therefore questions the justification of using the model for resolving the cosmic puzzle.

Strong Observational Support for the R_h=ct Timeline in the Early Universe

Abstract:JWST's recent discovery of well-formed galaxies and supermassive black holes only a few hundred Myr after the big bang seriously challenges the timeline predicted by $\Lambda$CDM. Now, the latest identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at $z=6.71$, together with these earlier inconsistencies, makes the time compression problem in this model quite overwhelming. We consider the timeline associated with the formation and growth of PAH grains based on current astrophysical models and argue that their appearance at $z=6.71$ favors the structure formation history in $R_{\rm h}=ct$ rather than that of Planck-$\Lambda$CDM. We estimate the time at which they must have started growing in each case, and then trace their history through various critical events, such as the end of the `dark ages,' the beginning of Pop III star formation, and the onset of reionization. Together, these three distinct discoveries by JWST, viz. high-$z$ galaxies, high-$z$ quasars and the surprisingly early appearance of PAHs, all paint a fully consistent picture in which the timeline in $\Lambda$CDM is overly compressed at $z\gtrsim 6$, while strongly supporting the expansion history in the early Universe predicted by $R_{\rm h}=ct$.

New dark energy constraints from supernovae, microwave background and galaxy clustering

Abstract:Using the spectacular new high redshift supernova observations from the HST/GOODS program and previous supernova, CMB and galaxy clustering data, we make the most accurate measurements to date of the dark energy density rho_X as a function of cosmic time, constraining it in a rather model-independent way, assuming a flat universe. We find that Einstein's vanilla scenario where rho_X(z) is constant remains consistent with these new tight constraints, and that a Big Crunch or Big Rip is more than 50 gigayears away for a broader class of models allowing such cataclysmic events. We discuss popular pitfalls and hidden priors: parametrizing the equation-of-state w_X(z) assumes positive dark energy density and no Big Crunch, and the popular parametrization w_X(z)=w_0 +w_0' z has nominally strong constraints from CMB merely because w_0' > 0 implies an unphysical exponential blow-up rho_X ~ e^{3 w_0' z}.

Revisiting the Concordance $Λ$CDM model using Gamma-Ray Bursts together with Supernovae Ia and Planck data

Abstract:The Hubble constant, $H_0$, tension is the tension among the local probes, Supernovae Ia, and the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation. It has been almost a decade, and this tension still puzzles the community. Here, we add intermediate redshift probes, such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB) and Quasars (QS0s), to check if and to what extent these higher redshift probes can reduce this tension. We use the three-dimensional fundamental plane relation among the prompt peak luminosity, the luminosity at the end of the plateau emission, and its rest frame duration. We find similar trend in GRB intrinsic parameters as previously seen in Pantheon-Plus intrinsic parameters. We find an apparent $3.14\sigma$ tension for the GRB intrinsic parameter $b$. Indeed, this tension disappears and the parameters are actually compatible within $2.26\sigma$. Another interesting point is that the 3D relation plays an important role in conjunction with Supernovae data with Pantheon Plus and that this apparent discrepancy show how it is important the correction for selection biases and redshift evolution. The incorporation of redshift evolution correction results in a reduction of the GRB tension to $2.26\sigma$ when adjusting correction parameters. We envision that with more data this indication of tension will possibly disappear when the evolutionary parameters of GRBs are computed with increased precision.

Revisiting the epoch of cosmic acceleration

Abstract:We revisit the epoch of cosmic speed-up characterized by the redshift of transition from a decelerated to an accelerated phase. This redshift is termed the transition redshift ($z_t$). We use the spatially Flat and Non-Flat variants of the most common $\Lambda$CDM and XCDM models to put constraints on the transition redshift along with the other model parameters. The data for this analysis comes from the recent and updated Pantheon+ Supernova dataset and the Hubble parameter measurements obtained from Cosmic Chronometers. We consider both datasets with their respective covariance matrices incorporating all kinds of statistical and systematic uncertainties. We observe that using the combined datasets of H(z) and SNe, the best fit value of transition redshift lies in the range $0.61 < z_t < 0.82$ for all four dark energy models. Incidentally, we observe a positive curvature for the Non-Flat models and correlations between several model parameters.

Cosmic Inflation at the Crossroads

Abstract:The capability of Cosmic Inflation to explain the latest Cosmic Microwave Background and Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation data is assessed by performing Bayesian model comparison within the landscape of nearly three-hundred models of single-field slow-roll inflation. We present the first Bayesian data analysis based on the third-order slow-roll primordial power spectra. In particular, the fourth Hubble-flow function $\epsilon_4$ remains unbounded while the third function verifies, at two-sigma, $\epsilon_{3}\in[-0.4,0.5]$, which is perfectly compatible with the slow-roll predictions for the running of the spectral index. We also observe some residual excess of $B$-modes within the BICEP/Keck data favoring, at a non-statistically significant level, non-vanishing primordial tensor modes: $\log(\epsilon_{1}) > -3.9$, at $68\%$ confidence level. Then, for 283 models of single-field inflation, we compute the Bayesian evidence, the Bayesian dimensionality and the marginalized posteriors of all the models' parameters, including the ones associated with the reheating era. The average information gain on the reheating parameter $R_\mathrm{reh}$ reaches $1.3 \pm 0.18$ bits, which is more than a factor two improvement compared to the first Planck data release. As such, inflationary model predictions cannot meet data accuracy without specifying, or marginalizing over, the reheating kinematics. We also find that more than $40\%$ of the scenarios are now strongly disfavored, which shows that the constraining power of cosmological data is winning against the increase of the number of proposed models. Abstract:What is the size of the universe if we take the estimated mass in the observable universe and compress it until we reach the Planck mass density? We will investigate this using both the Friedmann model and the recent Haug model of the universe that takes into account Lorentz relativistic mass. The resulting size is approximately that of a proton. We will also look at a hypothetical Planck mass size universe. In the Friedmann model one needs rapid expansion of mass to maintain the initial Planck mass density or, alternatively, only space expansion with the density decreasing from its initial conditions, while in the Haug model the Planck mass universe seems to cause no such “strange” predictions.

Abstract:We explore a class of primordial power spectra that can fit the observed anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background well and that predicts a value for the Hubble parameter consistent with the local measurement of H0 = 74 km/s/Mpc. This class of primordial power spectrum consists of a continuous deformation between the best-fit power law primordial power spectrum and the primordial power spectrum derived from the modified Richardson-Lucy deconvolution algorithm applied to the Cℓs of best-fit power law primordial power spectrum. We find that linear interpolation half-way between the power law and modified Richardson-Lucy power spectra fits the Planck data better than the best-fit ΛCDM by Δ log = 2.5. In effect, this class of deformations of the primordial power spectra offer a new dimension which is correlated with the Hubble parameter. This correlation causes the best-fit value for H0 to shift and the uncertainty to expand to H0 = 70.2 ± 1.2 km/s/Mpc. When considering the Planck dataset combined with the Cepheid H0 measurement, the best-fit H0 becomes H0 = 71.8 ± 0.9 km/s/Mpc. We also compute a Bayes factor of log K = 5.7 in favor of the deformation model.
